One of the most memorable movies from my youth was " The Battle of the River Plate ". Alongside the " Final Countdown ", these 2 movies started my still lasting interest in warships and naval related things. Salem played the Graf Spee in the River Plate movie. Had to get her, regardless of the coal cost. A decision i never regretted.
Salem's big advantage is premium credit earning. It is a great credit maker. And being a tier 10 you can use it in Ranked, where it is arguably better than the DM. I won mine in a firepower container so maybe I am biased in that I did not put out real money for it.
I use Salem as an open water long range version of the DM. So, I do take the hydro, range mod in slot 6 and rudder shift mod in 5 (not concealment). It isn't quite a lighthouse build, but I wanted it to not just feel like a crappier DM. I don't recommend this approach for newer cruiser players, however.
Exactly. Salem doesn't have a strong radar or hydro to challenge caps. But it's heal allows it to be more of a roamer. It's a solid 2nd line support cruiser that can help other pushing ships and DDs.
I enjoy my Salem. I have never regretted getting it early (my second coal ship) because I never focused on the American Cruiser lines (I still have not finished them and do not have the Des Moines). Getting it for coal basically allowed me to "fast forward" through a tech line and have access to this play style. My opinion is, if you have Des Moines or are close to getting it, get Salem later on, but if you have little interest in prioritizing the American Cruiser lines, pick this ship up as soon as you can. It is one of the best Coal ships available for sure. In play, I find Salem stands up very well to other tier X cruisers if played bow in or using islands. The heal makes you competitive if you need to stand your ground and trade. The shorter radar is really only useful for defense when getting pushed by smoke users (Smolensk, Italian Ships, Destroyers), although hydro is probably the smarter choice for overall usefulness. I prefer range mod in randoms because I can't rely on teammates if I push forward to use islands, and I have the freedom to pick my own engagements more often.
So, I run two completely different load outs between Des Moines and Salem. Des Moines being my aggressive ship with reload or legendary. My Salem is completely different as I run range and hydro with rudder. It has a pretty good fire chance and is very capable at pushing late game,
it is a great all-round ship for farming missions. need fires, works good, need citadels, works good for that, need X number of main gun hits once again a good ship for that. there may be ships better at each individual mission, but Salem is good at all of them. it is my most played ship by far.
I’d say Salem is probably in the top three for Coal cruisers. Current meta favors Azuma and Yoshino but Napoli and Agir are so much fun in alternative battle types.
Are you Listening W.G. we all want a DeSalem lol. Jokes a side, DeMoines is one Awesome ship! i got Halsey and the first Capt. build you showed. Great vid, thank you @PotatoQuality!. Oh yeah, one day we'll get that Salem in my port.
My first T10 was DM, thus Salem was my last T10 cruiser picked up and 2nd to last of all coal ships. It's good, but I'll take 10k radar over superheal any day. If you could heal cit dmg, it might be different.
I might be a weirdo but I prefer the Salem over DM. Yes it has weaknesses, no hydro, short range radar. However, the heal allows for interesting moves. e.g. Using the super heal and its ridiculous HP recovery on a push to negate initial damage and fire damage over the 30 sec duration, it sort of makes you Semi immune to damage. Both DM and Salem are amazing, and the amount of times you can hold a flank on your own, especially with a useful DD spotting, is very common. The enemy just poops themselves :D
I thought about getting Salem when I had the funds for it ages ago (think it was like early last year) but I chose to get Scharnhorst instead because that can be used in ops. I don't think I want any ships above T8 because I'm not a try hard stat hunter pvp player. I don't bother with random battles, I won't say how I feel about island hugging because someone will get butthurt over it.
Can't you slap a special package on the T10 ships to get them the same credit earning as t9? Or are there some hidden modifiers that aren't visible in game?
They are not exactly equivalent. Yes the special package on the Des Moines would theoretically gross the same credits as the Salem, but the net credit income would be less on the Des Moines. That's because special ships like Salem also have a reduced service cost as compared to a tech tree ship like the Des Moines. Special ships, which are all tier 10, cost 90,000 credits per battle while tech tree ships at tier 10 cost 150,000 credits per random battle. Both those figures are before any clan discounts. That 60,000 credit difference really adds up over time.
Salem's big perk is being a premium ship, the 'somewhat better than normal heal... sometimes...' is honestly usually a trap since it's so often just a normal heal and in almost all other ways Salem is slightly to significantly worse than DM.
On legends Salem came out a tier lower then dm . Salem had better reload and 30mm armor then it got nerfed .now on legends Salem has the same 27mm armor but it still had super heal
Imp pen angles on DM AP is also very very big in close quarter fights vs BBs and other cruisers. Salem cannot deal with angled close quarter combat as nearly as good!
The lack of legendary module and hydro just means it's a worse Des Moines I think. The super heal just doesn't do enough to make up for those things - particularly when, as you say, it would make a lot more sense with the legendary module and hydro to be able to push I'd rather they gave it the hydro and legendary module, kept the super heal, and gave it a different downside instead
Without having DM: yes sure, its good With owning DM: eh ... unlikely, worse radar, no hydro if taking radar, no legendary speed juke module, sure has super heal but gives up so much.
Love the Salem, but the DM having access to the Leg Mod is a game changer on top of all of the other advantages of the DM. The ability to dodge ends up making the DM more survivable than the Salem.
DM is better option for 4 reasons: 1. 30mm plate at range the super heal aint gunna help you 2. No hydro and limited radar means you cant be a good team mate close in..... 3. No reverse, over commit = world of pain 4. Ledge mod on DM gives you light cruiser handling not available for Salem and PQ agrees with this
Salem is basically a worse Des Moines with better economy. You trade a good radar, and hydro on Des Moines for a nearly worthless radar that shares a slot with hydro on Salem for a super heal that you likely won't get full value out of past the first charge, assuming you don't just get nuked out of the game due to the kind of bad armour on Des Moines. Plus gonna be real, if you aren't going to recommend Moskva because you can get a better ship in tech tree, then you can't really recommend Salem for the same reason. Even more so as Moskva doesn't give anything up over the tech tree ships, it's a solid mix of the two, where Salem is just a flat out worse Des Moines, that honestly would make more sense as a T9 ship with maybe a slightly longer reload.
You don't get the Shikishima because it's better or worse than the Yamato, you get it for the sound and the sheer fear for your opponents to receive 510mm shells in their face
i'd choose DM over Salem in ranked.Killing dd's is important for winning games and DM has better chance to do that than Salem due to longer range of radar
Have to disagree overall - Salem is worth getting if you play her in Brawls, Ranked, and use hydro instead of radar. And the credit economy boost makes her viable for earning. Plus it's a great trainer for Halsey.
No, not worth it. I traded mine for Keirsarge and have no regrets. Salem is just a worse DM other than the heal. The heal which you rarely get a lot of additional use from as it's citadel and overmatch city. Salem is ill suited to the passive game meta.
i completely disagree with PQ's suggestion to not get this ship. I think it should be one of the first ships you pick up. ESPECIALLY as a newer player, which i feel these videos are directed towards. I don't understand why he dismisses the super heal. It's a direct upgrade to the DM's heals: same cooldown, same number of uses, way more health. Also, the radar isn't as bad as he makes it seem. It has 1.5km less range (8.5 vs 10) but 5s more action time (40s vs 35), so it's a tradeoff. It's also a GOD-tier ship for operations and async battles. In async your DPM, combined with the heal, will let you carry without a care in the world.
Not a trade-off. DM radar are infinitely more useful than Salem radar. Your radar has bascially zero coverage, you're forced 2.4km deep into your own conceal to do it, and 8.5 is just so so close that if the enemy DD is not brain damaged or caught with their pants down, its trivially easy to play around. I would take tier 7 Indianapolis radar over Salem radar 7 days a week, twice on Sundays.
Oh cool I already know what coal ships to buy without even having to think. Don't even need to look at them I just know before even entering the game because it's common sense.
Dont think he mentioned that the damage con is 40 sec, not your typical 60 CD

The better utility of Des Moines makes it better for ranked than Salem. In ranked and clan battles utilty is much more important than DPM or the heal.
I got mine the same way, also never used it.
Fun fact, the USS Salem is docked like 7 mins from my house and Becomes a haunted ship on Halloween.

Certifiable.

yeah, full AP Zao is ineffective af.

as long as its an "free" coal purchase, this ship is good to have it there as a premium credit ship. Definetly one of the good coal ship out there.
I think it's one of the best beginner's TX.
Heavy cruiser guns and light cruiser reload.
🌟Good one PQ @PotatoQuality - I always learn something from you! Appreciated the discussion of the heal value vs. Mino.
Nice video series, like your style a lot. What would be your choice for credit farming in asymetric battles? Greatings from germany :)
Any tier 9 premium would be good. Pommern is a great choice for asymmetric. It's a tanky brawler
I've always been on the fence with this ship because I already have DM, which is a perfectly serviceable heavy cruiser.
My first T10 was DM, thus Salem was my last T10 cruiser picked up and 2nd to last of all coal ships. It's good, but I'll take 10k radar over superheal any day. If you could heal cit dmg, it might be different.
Des Moines's Legendary turns her into a nightmare too. If Salem were to get a legendary mod, it may be more comparable.
I won my Salem out of a container and I love it
i got Salem out of a container too

Salem also has slightly worse AA. But, it does benefit from the better Premium economy.
AND A Super Heal! For a played like me (not all that good) need it!

It has the same AP and if you time the heal, it can brawl better due to health recovery in that short period of time.
