I've had the Lauria a month now and can't stop playing it. It's a really good as long as the RNG gods are on your side and the big SAP guns make it a lot of fun and pretty unique. Certainly the second best steel ship after the Bourgogne and she looks good too.
Pretty sure the overpen damage from full pens comes from hitting secondaries or penning turrets. I remember a year ago I was in a Nelson facing an Atlantico, got off a beautiful broadside AP salvo with 6 hits, and only did a total of 9k damage due to mostly penning his secondaries.
@@snoboreddotcomtechnically AP can overpen them and deal pen damage if it hits and pens something behind it Through it only happens on ships that have secondaries below main deck

Last night I was playing randoms with JB. I really enjoy Lauria. Had a fair few games and found it very easy to get used to. It's reasonably accurate but the best thing is that a lot of people underestimate how strong it is and simultaneously don't shoot it because they know it has strong armour. Additionally it's fast and handles well, with excellent torpedo protection.
Honestly SAP was a mistake as it was implemented. Think I said this before but it really should have been slightly better pen HE, with damage between HE and AP and slightly improved pen angles, not MUCH better pen than HE with more damage than AP, and stupidly improved pen angles. Sure you do benefit from swapping to AP for broadsides, but at the same time, you don't lose much of anything for not just spamming SAP. At least with HE you have 1/3 of your AP's raw damage most of the time. You give up a lot of raw damage for the consistency. SAP gets more damage and keeps the consistency. Oh but it can't light fires so that makes it balanced. As if fires were something to be relied on. Lauria was on my short list for first steel ship purely because of that. I only didn't grab her because I prefer large Cruisers more and Battleship Stalingrad was just to tempting.
I selected the Shikishima and never looked back... I had already the Meck and the Bourg, but was missing something and was the gun sound... everything else is secondary :-P
At the 5m potential damage game: The enemy pretty much never used HE for your angled ship, which is of course totally dumb. Every time I deal with the Lauria, I only use AP, when it goes broadside. Lauria and Petro are the ships, where HE is the tool to go with, when you play against them.
The problem with SAP is that it over-saturates a target with one salvo. As a guy who mains Colombo as my main tier X battleship, I will always state that your main armament in a SAP-equipped battleship is not the SAP, it's the AP. AP does not saturate a target, it will always do a flat damage number based on whether the hit is a overpen, penetration, or shatter/ricochet. You use SAP to guarantee a lower damage but more consistent salvo, it's useful for finishing off the target or scaring it with a strong salvo when they're unsaturated. That said, Lauria's guns are big enough to negate that issue so the idea to just stick to SAP against an angled target is definitely plausible, though I'd stick to AP if it was against an Azuma since Azuma literally gets overmatched everywhere by 457.
I am sorry but my Lauria just doesnt work this way, my dispersion is all over the place, SAP sometimes bounces off superstructures, or sometimes penetrates cruisers dealing 1000, sometimes it just hits torpedo protection on target broadsiding ship. I had battles where all shells either bounced off or splashed all over the place. Mind i have the same build you have, and still i find this ship to be the biggest troll of all WG ships.
