Tony and Chelsea discuss Marques Brownlees review of "the worst product" and address the backlash he faced. Are reviewers responsible for only providing good feedback? How much should a reviewer consider the longevity of a company when providing a review?
Tony and Chelsea discuss their experiences with bad reviews, times they've made companies upset, and how they approach making reviews that are fair but honest.

What's unethical is 5 star reviews of terrible products. An honest bad review, hopefully, would give the company things that could be changed to make the product better.

Good video. Too many so-called influencers out there who get paid to “review” products. And it doesn’t matter if they’re crap or good they will promote it.
If this guy thought that the product was not good and said so, then that’s honest reporting IF he also tells people why it’s not good and where it could be improved.
Most reviews that I watch on RUclips are about cameras, lenses, camera accessories and motorcycle related products. I can soon tell when I’m watching an influenza (my term for influencers who are ethically bankrupt) and I cut the video short with neither a thumbs up or thumbs down as my “review” of the video.
But then I’m not the demographic to which these people are targeting, I guess.
Oh, the worst reviewers that I watch are auto magazines which are now online and which promote a new car because if they shitcan it they run the risk of losing sponsorship, advertising and the invitations to product launches.

Why is anyone worried about one review sinking a product? Do any of us ever buy a new camera or lens after only one review? Well… maybe, but we all know the pitfalls. By far, most of the time we all read/watch dozens of reviews and hang on every word. We usually give more credence to reviewers we trust (like T&C) but mentally we’re sorting pros and cons in our minds as we read/watch. I want to see Cons mentioned in reviews; if that’s considered ‘negative’ so be it.

Reviewers have a responsibility to their audiences to make honest videos. If they are effective influencers and tell us that a product is good and we go out and buy it only to discover that we’ve pissed away hard earned money on something that’s crap then that’s on the reviewer.
People will then make it known via social media and elsewhere that they got sucked into buying that product based on the influencer’s say-so that it’s good.
That’s when both the company and its marketing people, influencers included, need to be held accountable.

The tech space is full of garbage that gets millions in funding just because every investor wants to find the next apple stock.
I’m neutral on MKBHD, (I don’t trust his car opinions, he gets a little into buttonless/ touchscreen hype and his “Nissan, track car” comments where way too confidently wrong) but the tech space needs scathing reviews, we make tons of E-waste. Usability is one of those areas as some people are more tech savvy than others, some have more patience for learning curve, etc.

When I was going to school to be a chef, they asked us, "Who is the worst possible customer?" People said things like, "Those that don't leave a tip." Or, "Large families with unruly kids that parents don't try to control." Or even, "Those that rob you." The instructor said, "No. Your worst possible customer is one that has a bad experience at your restaurant, leaves a standard tip, pays their bill, and leaves without saying anything." When that happens you have just given someone a bad experience and you have no hope of ever fixing it. You will then give everyone else that same bad experience. You should PRAY that your customers criticize you so that you will know what is wrong. How else can you fix something unless you know it is broken? Sure, you might not like that someone is a jerk about it, but even then, they just paid someone to give them a bad experience. Wouldn't you be a jerk too?

I know that some of the those reviews definitely had an impact on the companies that produced the product but I'm not sure how often those reviews were considered unethical when giving a negative review. Great video. I think companies have an obligation to make great products. These days they seem to want to rush things to market and have the consumers be the beta testers. Innovation is fine but not at the expense of consumers wallets. What I don't understand is why so many people think corporations are suddenly "the good guys" now. 99.9% of the time they only care about their bottom line, they are a company and want to make money. And if you pay attention to the news, companies don't care about their employees on the whole People that get upset over this stuff fail to realize that same company they are rushing to defend would not have a second thought about laying off employees via an email.
A smart company makes a good product to build a trusted brand and loyalty however most companies are not smart and only care about that bottom line. As a consumer we give a company money in exchange for value. If the company has a bad value proposition it's not the consumers job to come to their defense, it's the companies job to improve or fix their product and the value proposition they claim to provide.

  • @RockWILK

The truth is, there are very few real reviews on RUclips. RUclips is really just social media, or a tiny step above, but anybody can come on here and say anything they want about anything. The line gets blurred when companies start paying RUclipsrs for reviews, and there's no ethical constraint. They can literally say whatever they want, without any professional guidelines. But having said that, anybody who comes to RUclips for reviews should come with that in mind, meaning they should watch as many reviews as possible, and then decide for themselves if they want to take the leap of faith with any particular product. Just like a reviewer who writes about a movie or a play, that's just one person giving you their opinion. You might miss out on seeing a play that resonates with you and changes your life, just because the reviewer didn't like it, and that review kept you from the theater. It's really the same thing. At the end of the day, the consumer has to be smart and make decisions based on their own better judgment. People have to do their due diligence, for themselves. Do the research, and nobody should ever blame one reviewer for destroying a company's existence. I guess that might be a possible thing that can happen, especially in this particular case, but it shouldn't be Marques' responsibility just because he's so popular. He should have the right to say whatever he wants to say, as long as he's being honest, and again, RUclips is just a leap of faith, we are trusting people's integrity.... or not. ;)

Hi, I really recognize many of the things You talk about. Since 16 years I review motorhomes for a living. And I make my utmost to be neutral and honest. At first some of my advertisers cancelled their adverts because they felt the reviews were too negative. I disagreed, in fact I hate negative texts. I never say something flat out sucks. I prefer saying how I would have wanted them to do instead. After a few years all advertisers came back because they noticed that their clients appreciated my reviews and when they talked to the customers they didn't have to explain the vehicle as much, the customer was already informed. So in my opinion a review should always focus on the end user. It is simply better for everyone involved.

You all have put yourself in places of responsibility for your content. You have benefited financially for your videos on YT. We lack the truth today even at the product level, God knows that at the national political level the same faults exist. Why cant we tell the truth about a product based upon our experiences. The problem is simple by posting on YT, many thinks that person is an expert, which many times that person does not have a clue about what he or she or AI is talking about. You both have the credentials/experience to be listened to and be respected based on the years I have reviewed you content. I wish that was true on the majority of videos on YT. Social media doesn’t do honesty - it can’t. It’s an egalitarian society, it’s the Lake Wobegon effect where every child is above average, it’s mathematically impossible. Back when I was in school there was a grading system on a scale from 1-100 where 90 - 100 was and A (AKA excellent), 80 - 90 was a B (AKA good), 70 - 80 was a C (AKA fair), 60 - 70 was a D (AKA poor) and everything below that was failing. That was a straight forward, honest grading system. The problem is that as an internet society we have come to see “below average” as an insult. Product reviewers often use some kind of numbering system to gauge various aspects of a product. I have never seen a failing score, but I have seen products which were clearly deserving of a failing score. If there can’t be failing scores, there can’t be honest reviews…
I’ve done very few consumer product reviews in my life - I don’t expect someone who doesn’t know me to value what I have to say. I do product test, so I do review products for the companies that make or market the products. I am brutally honest, and I’ve been fired more than a few times for being so. My review of a reflex (mirror) lens said if you punch out the front element you could use the lens to hold pens and pencils - it was that bad.
The sad fact is that the internet is a race for likes and views, influencers will always do what they need to do to get ahead.

What I find most unethical about camera reviewers is when they trash a product because it doesn't fit their needs. For instance, they will trash a Nikon camera because of its poor auto-focus. (Do not own any Nikon products) But what about other genres of photography? How does it handle landscapes, low light, portraits, or slow-moving objects? What about its ergonomics? Instead of saying this is a good camera unless you shoot sports and wildlife, they say it is a bad camera. What they should be doing is saying these are the positives this camera offers and these are the negatives and let the consumer decide. We know our own needs.
The other thing that drove me nuts was that years ago Sony would release cameras that overheated. No big deal to camera reviewers. Canon released the R5 and R6 that overheated, everybody made a big deal about it. My problem was not that they criticized Canon, but that they did not criticize Sony.

  • @dsimon9s29

Thank you for posting. Rant Start: Firstly, any reviewer who receives product from the vendor for review is dealing with a conflict of interest. Some people can handle it ethically, others can't. When reviewers/influencers are invited and flown to nice locations to provide reviews of their product (for example, recently Leica flew I don't know how many people (from USA, Canada, Australia, all over the EU) for the introduction of the SL3) it is a clear conflict of interest. As a viewing customer, I know when I watch these reviews, they will be biased. So they will discuss all the "goodie" things about the product. Sometimes you can read between the lines and extrapolate what they are really saying. Often you have to wait for a presenter to actually buy the product for personal/professional use to get a more objective assessment (for example, presenters who purchased the Leica Q3 only to sell it a month or two after purchase). As a photograph hobbyist and motorcycle hobbyist, I am constantly evaluating the information presented. With motorcycle reviews, presenters (who are also often flown to fancy places and treated well) will talk about all the new great features, but will not mention the serious reliability issues, and customer service issues potentially associated with the motorcycle model and/or the manufacturer. :Rant Finish. A good subject matter to discuss and glad you brought it up. Next Rant: Maybe you should consider inviting a friend/relative/neighbor who is a viewer, who can express their perspective when they watch a product review. The few videos I have watched from Marques (should really be Marquez) (I am Menéndez and not Menendes), I have found them to be fair and detailed. I have no complaints about him. I consider It honorable/ethical/ and morally just you posted this video to support him. But at the same time you are a business insider defending a business insider. Human instinct, it seems, drives us to be protective of our industries of interest. : End Rant 2. And with that, I wish you a good night. and pleasant dreams.

I want an honest review whether good or bad. I never watch only one review. I try my best to follow RUclipsrs such as yourselves that know what they’re doing, are intelligent and fair. Then, I make up my own mind and acknowledge that I’m responsible for my own decisions. What bothers me the most is the opposite scenario that you mentioned: someone says how great a product is and then when it’s ultimately replaced by a new model in the future, that person talks about all of the original model’s “well known” failings.

I like your reviews when you two don’t agree on a product. It might be two cameras, or a iPhone camera and an actual camera - and you each say why you like what ever you are choosing as “better.” I love that - because we all have preferences and sometimes it’s just about what fits a personality, what fits the purpose, etc. I often see fantastic iPhone photos that are great because the person knew how to compose or to recognize light quality - and the reverse - someone using an expensive camera and producing deadly boring images. Your mix of camera gear talk and taking good pictures is just right for me, and you make me laugh. I think you are great!

When looking for reviewers, I check the language they use. If they use language that suggests dispassionate review, that's a plus. Making qualifiers and considerations that are fair to both the producers of the product, and the consumers, is a good sign.

@@ThomasBryantHe had a quarter of an inch panel gap, so bad it looked like the door was open, but claimed that wasn’t a big deal. Meanwhile a different car had bugs in its pre-production software (not as many as he found in the cybertrucks production software) and he labeled it as the worst car he had ever reviewed.
It’s not any individual review that is a problem, but his body of work is very very inconsistent. He’ll slam a company for problems he lets others off for. I don’t think he’s being paid off, I think he can’t be objective enough so how he feels at a particular time has a huge impact on the review he gives. He was clearly hyped about the cybertruck, very openly so and I believe that affected his review.
Edit, just reached the point in the video where they talked about their experience with the Tesla fan base… which is an explanation I hadn’t considered before.

The Tesla stuff is no different, literally the worst rated cars in the US, he gets a panel gap big enough that any other car manufacturer would look at it and just assume the the frame is ruined and trash it, but Tesla puts that out and he says it's just whatever.

Thank you for the insightful review. I tend to focus on negative reviews as they highlight crucial aspects such as reliability, support, and safety, which are paramount to me. Regarding this specific video, I have two notes: Firstly, is the image intended for HDR? It appears overly bright, with details lost in the highlights. Secondly, I've noticed that in your own reviews, particularly those related to Sony products, you tried the product on the release day. Many people had issues with sony cameras, i can name a few, it's not the point. I'd like you to be more critical about the products you're reviewing. Having more time to test em out could really benefit the potential buyers. Wishing you all the best!

If I'm about to buy new tech, I look up the reviews if several RUclipsrs not only one. The more substantial the investment is the more videos I watch. Usually RUclipsrs all come from different backgrounds and approach the products from different angles. The important step after having gathered that much information is to ask myself, what do I really need and why. To me this is the most relevant question in the whole process.

It's the same as when sports fans complain that a referee "decided the game" by making a textbook call in the late stages of a close game... it's clearly the player committing the penalty who is making such a 'decision' - if the ref were to NOT call it then that would be a much bigger instance of deciding the game, by not following its rules.
All to say: don't blame the reviewer for fulfilling their exact role in the marketplace when it comes to bad products / companies.

First of all it's a reviewer's responsibility to give an honest review of the product in hand, not to keep the company alive by lying. If the review(s) end up killing the company, it means they made a shlt product.
And the people who only read the title and don't have the patience to watch a 20min review from a respectable reviewer... probably wouldn't have bought the product anyway, otherwise they'd want the information, not just the headline.

Of course not, unless they're purposefully bad because you represent a competing company, or you have a direct commercial interest against their product. Which must be something extremely rare.
The "AI pin" product has an almost universal "It's CR*P!" consensus, on reviews. So, it's a great idea, has some superb features, but strictly regarding why someone would but this, and would really benefit from using it, it's complete cr*p: it's very expensive, it has an expensive subscription without which it's useless, it doesn't do a whole lot of what it should, it's battery life is limited, it gets really warm, and it's impractical. So: it's a fail.
Will the company survive, to give updates that make it more useful? Or to release an AI Pin mk 2 that works great? Who knows, and also... who cares?

In the world of bleeding-edge tech, most products rarely take big enough risks to be truly bad. When they do and they fail, no one gets upset at reviewers: bend-gate, the first Samsung foldable, the Noct lens, etc. all show that people love a good ribbing at a bad product's expense. Yes, Humane is a much smaller company, but Marques even reviewing this thing at all should be interpreted as an overall vote of confidence: it shows that he is genuinely excited about their ideas, even if not this particular execution. Don't know why people are getting it so twisted.
