    The strength of photo:
The immediate impact as decoration on a wall. Yet, you are allowed time to explore the details for however long you want. A perfect moment of storytelling captured in an instant that you can digest at your leasure: time frozen for you to drink in.
    The strength of video:
A montage that distills several moments of life into a digestable impression. Your attention is a curated glimpse into the mind of the creator, guided towards the vision they want to show off. Sounds, music, AND vision, all working together to create a mood or story.

As a retired person, from the 60’s onwards I’ve always taken photos and moving images (35mm film and 8mm film) then 35mm film and various tape format video , these days digital photos and digital video. Both have their place in my life, these days I make photo books for my stills but long term I worry about digital rot in my videos. I don’t see the need for debate, photos and video serve two entirely different but complimentary purposes. 😀

Photos allow the photographer to show the key moment without the viewer having to go through and find it themselves. It can then be printed and hung on the wall. I think that is why they will always be around.

Whenever I do a video production, I’m often asked to provide photographs that are extracted from the video clips. While many of these are quite acceptable for social media after being processed using Lightroom and Photoshop, when higher resolution is required, I have a DSLR ready to go. Because of these many requests, I changed the name of my company to Farrell Video Productions and Photography and updated my website to reflect my addition to photography. Actually, it was four years ago that I purchased your courses and studied your content with intensity. Thanks for your educational contributions to my career.

I agree to the arguments of both sides. You should compare foto and video with fast food and a longer meal. As fast food is less time and money effort to get, it will always be a quick and easy way against your hunger. But if you eat fast food only, you will never enjoy your meal. Yes, to get a four-star-dinner you need a good cook, time and money. But it's worth it! And If you spend time and start learning cooking for yourself, you will get more good meals and more satisfaction...
Back to foto and video: I'm a professional cameraman and learned photographie first at filmschool before film and video in the 80s, because it is the basic of filmmaking. And if you are able to make one good picture, you can start making 25 or 30 GOOD PICTURES per second combined with good sound. Yes, there are too many bad videos in the Internet, but there are even more bad fotos as well... As it is much easier to improve your skills for good foto results, you should start with that before wasting your own time and that of your followers before starting with video content, but then go to learn making good videos to really entertain people!

When I go on vacation, I'd often times rather shoot pictures over video because its just more convenient and it tells the story better than random video clips. Going out on a nature hike, I'd be more inclined to shoot pictures over video. There are instances where taking a video are preferred, like time lapses or certain scenes where you'll do frame grabs. If you're gonna capture your kid's sporting event or graduation, do you want the whole thing or just a few random photos? Your call. Important moments in the evolution of your family, do you want the whole moment as a video or some random photos? Me, I much prefer video but like Tony and Chelsea said, photography is just easier, so for me, photography wins out because I know how to make killer photos that wow people with minimal effort whereas the videos I take are just bland and boring and still require effort.

Video only makes sense to me when there's a story to be told.

This was a realy fun video. Thanks guys. It brought smiles. Imho, the question isn't one or the other, it's using both to their best. They both have indisputable strengths in sharing experiences. That said, for content creators, those that use both to thier unique characteristics in contribution to creating a story, get kudos. There are moments vid rules, there are moments stills rule. A "one or the other" mentality is simply self limiting.

I’d been worrying over this problem for some time, wondering if I should upgrade to a new mirrorless body and lenses after enjoying the simplicity and ease of handling an iPhone. It came down to a decision over what I love sharing more and the quality involved. Video is a lot of fun to share quirky moments for me. But, still photography will always be my first love and looking at framed and matted prints I’ve made when I walk through the house and giving them to friends and family just cannot be beat. It’s instant gratification every time. So, I bought a Canon R5 with incredible lenses and feel like a kid in a candy store. I still take the iPhone but it gets used for snapshots and music. My Canon, for serious stuff - the aurora, wildlife, and panoramas, mostly stills.

The main benefit of a picture is efficiency, you can get a lot from a picture with just a picture, a video requires a lot more data, which can be annoying, but it can convey so much more.

Photo's will never go away, but Video has been increasingly a high demand, Most Camera companies prioritize Video in their new camera systems, it's all about video now.
The photo part of the camera doesn't change all the much, but the technology keeps getting better and better, it started with 4K then 6K then they make 8K...
Sony even created a mirrorless camera devoted mostly towards video with the SONY FX30 and the FX3..
Nikon bought RED. It's all about video now, when some one goes and buys a professional camera they focus mostly on the video capabilities Not the picture capabilities ..

    _The money doesn't lie_
Exactly, it's incredibly difficult to make money with photos, last time I checked, professional photographer is one the least paid job in the world. The only winner in this are the camera companies because the vast majority of people don't want to take photos to make money. With video, it's the opposite, the vast majority of people who get into videography do it with the intention of making money and possibly make it their full time job.

In addition to being a very fun and funny video, it's quite thought-provoking. Both, please! The reality is that most photos are viewed for 1/4 second on Instagram. I watch many videos at 2x speed and don't finish them. So IG & YT are enormous repositories of photo & video, but definitely not houses of worship. When I go to an art gallery or museum I look at photographs for far longer than IG. Even a 90-second RUclips I might not finish. Yet it's rare to not finish a two-hour movie. I love a photo story with a dozen images and text. And there's something so powerful about seeing motion. Or hearing a person speak. We should be doing more of whichever we're currently doing less of.

It's a mute discussion, remember the song Video Killed the Radio Star from the late 70's because TV programs was taking over radio stations, well guess what, radio stations are still around with great radio hosts and pumping songs all day plus they are still a viable commercial outlet. Some people think it was MTV taking over radio stations as it was the first video aired on MTV, but in reality the song came up a couple of years before MTV launched. It was more like late night TV shows taking over the radio hosts, even Wolfgang Jack appeared on TV a few times, but to this day their still are radio hosts. The same can be said for video and photos. A digital photo album is far more interesting and easier to update than a digital video album. Just like when you most likely wanted to throw your TV off the roof when many, many moons ago, little Maddie watched Disney movies are cartoons over and over again, the same happens with a digital album, you can have 100 photos randomly displaying all day long and you would not mind, but if you heard the same video over and over again, you most likely will turn the thing off, or though it off the roof LOL

It depends on what you're trying to do. No one aspect is better than the other. If you're a photographer, of course it's going to be photos. If you're a videographer, of course it is going to be video. If you are both, it's both.

"Nikon bought RED, well people do desperate things." I know it was meant to be humor, though it very likely can be the best description of what just happened.

I take photos at family gatherings and other social events. I can still be part of the gathering. Once you start shooting video, you extract yourself from participating in the gathering and become an observer.

The same notes Tony has could be applied for Games over Video.

Gopro sales are down because their cameras are crap and after years and years of "development" Gopro still hasn't managed to get rid of all the bugs present in their cameras since the Gopro 7.
Insta 360 announced that their X3 surpassed one million sales mark.
For me, videos are way better even if it takes a little more effort. That's why I made my RUclips channel: to be able to record and store my memories from my travels.
The videos will be there even when I'll be older and unable to ride my motorcycle.
A video tells more then looking at a photo ever will.

I prefer taking photos and they freeze a moment in time to savour and interprete. Videos are just passing and can only be viewed on a screen.

Hi Tony and Chelsea, LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE. I used to like Videos when they were analoge They were enjoyable because there was no Lag. And you could film with only three Candles. I am Surprised about Go Pro. Thanks for sharing. 😊

VHS is poor quality to start with.
If you want to store video. You
Can’t compress them like mpg or mp4 . You need to use AVI this is raw video. But a phone program says it is but i doubt it. AVI is Big like 30 meg a minute or so .
