    There is no such thing as the best guitarist, there are so many excellent guitarists it is impossible to say who is the worlds best, there are probably eighteen year old hill-billy flat pickers along the Appalachian Mountains who could give them all a run for the money

    David Gilmour is one guitarist who makes the instrument sing.

    He's my number one.

    • @jvaubry
      @jvaubry 22 дня назад

      David Gilmour is a fine guitarist for sure, but there is no way he can be considered better than Stevie Ray Vaughn. By his own admission, Gilmour is self taught and copied a lot of lead guitar phrasing from his influences. If you listen closely to his playing, like a lot of guitarists, he often repeats phrases several times over as he goes from one phrase to another. SRV phrasing changes constantly, and he can play very fast (much faster than Gilmour) as well as playing very emotional phrasing.

    People complain about these list but it’s all so subjective. It depends on what you like. These list are mostly about commercial success. For me it’s Jimmy Page and David Gilmore because that’s what I like. I played with guys in college who were amazing players. They turned out to be doctors and lawyers and such. These list will never make everyone happy. To me the most underrated player ever is Prince. I’m not a fan but I can recognize his talent. We can all name a thousand players who we think are the greatest. Let’s just appreciate the talent of these players.

    First off I'll agree with you on 11 of the top 20 with Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page and Van Halen as the top 5. I would also include Allman, Townshend, and Santana in the top 10, I also have Walsh, Vaughn, Knopfler, and Zappa in my top 20. I will also switch in Peter Green and Angus Young as alternatives to Leslie West and Robin Trower as Mountain and Procol Harum have largely been forgotten. Now I also include Joe Satriani and Steve Vai in the top 10. Rounding out my bottom 10 are Steve Howe of Yes, David Fripp of King Crimson, Martin Barre of Jethro Tull, and The Steely Dan Guitarists, Jeff Baxter/Elliott Randall and Denny Diaz counting as 1. Heck, any of Becker's choices were great playing. Why I threw out BB and Chuck Berry; those are different genres and should have their own top 20. There are many great Blues and 50's R&R guitarists. Also Flamenco, C&W, acoustic virtuosos etc. As for Richards, Harrison, Garcia and Gilmour (I'll admit PF was a bit after my time), one should not confuse the lead guitarist from a super-group with actually being a top 20 guitarist. They certainly would make the top 50. As for Prince it appears in his videos the lead actually being played by Wendy and/or Lisa. I dunno, he's just not part of the AOR scene

      @@user-ge3sq1yn3m I attempted to track who the lead guitarist was for all the Steely Dan albums. There were several "guest" leads along the way including Rick Springfield and Mark Knopfler, I believe. The personnel is poorly documented on some of their albums, for the most part The first three albums Can't Buy, Countdown and Pretzel were Elliot Randall (staccato style intro on Reelin), Denny Diaz ( the electric sitar playing on Do it again) and Jeff Baxter mostly featured on Countdown, (the wonderful slide playing on Pearl of the Quarter).Skunk (and Michael McDonald) left after Pretzel to the Doobie Brothers. Larry Carlton was featured in the later albums like Aja and Gaucho. Diaz and Randall can be heard for the last time as a back & forth duo on the song "Aja". Becker is interesting. He was on bass for live performances and his first lead was Black Friday; a kind of an "all over the place" riff. He was more of a musician coordinator, matching the best player for each number.

    Hendrix was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne and earned his Screaming Eagle Patch upon completion of training 11 January 1962. He received a General Discharge under Honorable Conditions later when the Army determined Hendrix had no real interest in the Army as a career. He claimed he received a medical discharge after breaking his ankle on his last jump, however there is no documentation to back that story up.

    A list of who are the greatest musicians on any instrument or genre is impossible. What people love is subjective and always will be. I love guitar players and have often thought of making a list. I thought, how can I design a list with measurable criteria that most everyone would agree with. Eventually, I realized it could not be done. Maybe I would not select the correct criteria? Who can truly know who did the best riff or solo ever. You simply cannot. On this particular list, it has some great artists. Some of the best are on the list, some are not. The list seems to be more about who is most influential rather than who are the best players and for what reasons. As usual Hendricks is number 1, and he was amazing, however I think Jeff Beck was at least his equal as a player. But Hendricks had a bigger social influence. I have so many favorites and we are all very lucky to have experienced all their great tunes. Only God knows who is best and he is too busy to tell us.

      I respect your opinion but just wanted to chime in…. 😂 Cause if this list was based on who is technically the best then Hendrix wouldn’t even be in the top 100 guitarist of all time…. But he is not number one for being a virtuoso…. He’s number one because of what he brought to the guitar.. His emotion … His choice of notes 🎶. I remember when I first heard like “Purple Haze” for example… The notes he chose made me feel sadness and pain… And this was before I even started playing guitar myself… This wasn’t just an ordinary,mindless composition by some Neanderthal. I’ve been playing now for awhile and my feelings still haven’t changed… Hendrix is still the best there ever was and will be in rock music…..

    • @user-ge3sq1yn3m
      @user-ge3sq1yn3m Месяц назад +1

      @@richarddelgado2723 I respect you because you actually play the guitar and I do not. I have always considered the great artists on guitar, those who play with great heart and emotion. That is what gets my heart thumping when I hear a great performance. Though I like a number of guitar players more than Hendricks, I still feel that passion when he plays. So, he is a fabulous player, no doubt about that. So, I don't really disagree with you. But it leads me back to my original point, it is subjective. But Jimi Hendrix changed the world of music, that is a fact.

I know there a fantastic jazz drummers but rock drummers do completely different things as do a country drummer but there are greats in each field and and hardly interchangeable. You could do the best of each then rank those against each other.

      Stevie Ray Vaughn should be within the top 5, if not the top. If Jimi Hendrix is your reference, SRV shreds Voodo Chile, Jimi Hendrix's staple piece. I don't think any other guitarist listed in this video can compare in style, speed, or virtuosity when compared to SRV.

    I know this is a decent group of guitarists. I've played all their stuff, but you are missing some seriously great guitarists by only picking classical rock and blues players. No listing of the best guitarists could leave off Yngwie Malmsteen, Herman Li, or Syu (Japanese lead guitar for Galyernus). There are many more great guitarists that were not even mentioned. Sadly, despite the greatness of some of these guitarists, you sadly overlooks many better modern artists.
