Rocky Rodent (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Irem's 1993 action platforming game for the Super Nintendo, Rocky Rodent.
Rocky Rodent is a product of Irem's legendary in-house development team (best known for R-Type, and responsible for other classics such as Kung Fu, Kickle Cubicle, and the Hammerin' Harry series), many of whom would later go on to form Nazca (Neo Turf Masters, Metal Slug) and to work on Shenmue for the Sega Dreamcast.
Irem's SNES record was a bit hit-and-miss, though. R-Type III, Ganbare Daiku no Gensan, Irem Skins Game, Dino City, and Undercover Cops were all fantastic games, while others like GunForce and Street Combat were both complete garbage. So where does Rocky Rodent stand in the line-up?
Well, contrary to what this oddball platformer's poor North American sales might imply, Rocky Rodent (or Nitropunks Might Heads, if you prefer the Japanese title) is a thoroughly excellent platformer that sits comfortably in the upper-tier of SNES hop-and-bop action titles.
You play as the titular Rocky, an endlessly hungry creature that resembles a cross between a dog and Taz, trying to save a local restaurant owner's daughter after being promised a free all-you-can-eat meal. In order to do this, Rocky can don four different hairstyles that all give him different abilities. The hairspray gives him a pink spiky punk do that allows him to stab enemies and hang from ceilings; an electric razor gives him a purple mohawk that can be thrown like a boomerang or used like a trampoline; a 50s hair dryer gives him a big curly mop that can be used like a spring to jump on; and a sunflower will draw a butterfly to Rocky, providing him a green (?) Pollyanna braid that can whip enemies and be used to swing from hooks. There's no denying there is a lot of creativity at work here, no matter how dumb it might sound.
The graphics are quite impressively detailed and carry a good number of tell-tale signs of Irem's arcade work - the scrolling city backgrounds in particular look great, as does that highway chase set piece with the sun setting in the background. The music is also a high point, with some exceedingly catchy tunes, and for fans of Super R-Type's soundtrack, those orchestra hit samples make a return here with some unexpectedly cool results.
For as good as the presentation is, though, the real star is the gameplay. It's quite difficult, as you'd expect from Irem, but the whole thing is extremely smooth and controls well. The hair abilities add a lot to the typical platformer style and often give you multiple ways to get through each stage. For me, though, the real success in this game is the level design - there are few 2D platformers that I have played that have had layouts that were this well put together. There are several paths through each stage, but unlike most games with such large and open stages, there isn't ever one direct path to the end - you can take whichever path you want, and you won't find yourself running into dead-ends that require five minutes of backtracking to get back from. There's no mindlessly running around getting lost. Every path naturally and organically leads to the end, one way or another, and it's hard to overstate the impact this has one the game play. I really dislike many of the less linear platformers because of this issue, and there are few that I've ever played that handled it as elegantly and as effectively as Rocky Rodent. When you add this to the sense of speed the game carries, you could rightfully draw quite a few parallels between it and the Sonic games. If only all 16-bit games had this attention and care lavished upon their designs!
Rocky Rodent is truly one of those "hidden gem" type games that few seem to know about, and even fewer seem to like. Is it the odd main character? The difficulty level? I really don't know how it goes so underappreciated, but I will say that it's among my favorite platformers of its generation.
Even if the Japanese name is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Rocky Rodent is a game I probably would have played back in the day if I had a Super NES at the time it was released and if I heard great things about it. I think it's an interesting change that the anthropomorphic animal character you play as is actually an antihero in this game (since he's saving the damsel in distress for free food instead of out of the kindness of his heart nor out of love or revenge, although he does become thoughtful towards the damsel, Melody, in the ending). Honestly, I can picture RR being a non-Disney-animated film for kids at the time more than I can a video game, but as a video game, it looks and feels pretty good as a platforming, action/adventure game, with some elements I'm not going to get into withstanding. Great playthrough, and keep up the good work!

I remember this game. A friend of mine had it and trade it temporary for one of mine. It was SO difficult for me and you could die so easily; I never made it through the end; the design of some characters creeped me out (like the ones that hold the door shut in the apartments building). And it was a game that FORCED you to speedrun if you wanted a "Dynamite" message at the end of each level. So frustrating xD . You moved quite well all over the game, congrats. The ending was so... err... well...

Although it was executed pretty cleverly, from what I recall, the hairstyles had different abilities, he can throw his mohawk like a boomerang or have it stick to walls so he can bounce off it and he has a ponytail that can grapple and whatnot. @@lbowler63the funniest thing about rocky's design is that on the cover he had brown fur with yellow eye backgrounds and no black eyebrows and with shorts whereas in the match he had no shorts and with yellow eye backgrounds and no shorts and with big black eyebrows ( a bit like crash and taz)eh nothing, like this😂😂😂😂

It was going up in value for a short time, but it seems like that bubble popped, and it can be had for under $20 again. Might need to make my move on this and Dino City, also from Irem for the SNES, by the holidays.

@@NintendoComplete Recently got hit with "What games as a kid set me on the path of becoming a lifelong gamer?" ponderings. This was definitely one I was a big fan of, despite never being able to beat it ^_^
I was so happy to find a complete with no commentary video! Watching this, & some of the other games from the 80's and 90's is giving me such great nostalgic vibes I'm going to look into seeing if this game can be found somewhere to import into a mame cabinet a friend built! Would love to not only replay this as an adult but be able to introduce others to this!
Thanks again for posting this! d-^_^z

This game was actually hard to me when I had my super Nintendo back in the day. Looks like this player just breezed through it. I honestly don't remember finishing this though. I do remember leaving it for a much harder game Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure and even harder Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Irem games were known to be pretty tough, not everything they released mind you was hard, but games like this, X-Multiply (their easiest shmup), Image Fight, and the R-Type games tended to heavily test a player's skills, whether reflex, or memorization.
Then Irem had stuff like Ninja Spirit, which took a lot of balls to finish. loads of practice needed to finish it. Kung Fu Master, while easy on the NES, were pretty tough in the arcade version.

This underrated crazy critter needs to be on SMASH. theres a Smash Bros. for switch in the works so lets all hope he makes it to Smash. his hair powers and spray paints as one of his attacks would fit perfect.

Unlike other irem platformer on snes dino city, rocky rodent much harder. Not only because there one hit you dead system, but also because even in japanese version only 4 continues. In dino city japanese version, continues infinity.

hints more often in the official nintendo online channels, as stated before games like rocky rodent are forgotten gems , nintendo online on switch has gotten a lot better but with those titles, aero the acrobat 1&2 , bubsy , rocky rodent , cool spot and perhaps pink panther goes to Hollywood, and ren and stimpy veediots
