Growing up, I saw Hugo games quite often, so despite never having played one, they just kind of cemented their status as a quite big franchise in my mind. And so for really no reason, Hugo has stayed in the back of my mind for years now. But the more I look up about him, the weirder it gets. Like, I thought it started on the ps2, but then I saw some ps1 games, and then later I saw on the internet he had PC games, and now I find out he has bootleg genesis games. It's like I don't even know who Hugo is anymore.

It started out with old people who knew nothing about video games calling up to play it, and actually giving some pretty decent prizes out at the start, but then when the next iteration of the show went on, it just ended up being crappy stuff like a toaster. After that, Hugo went on to become a weather anchor on Danish morning TV (yes, really). But the first console that got a Hugo port of the TV show game was for the Commodore 64, and then I believe the Amiga got a couple as well afterwards, eventually finding it's way to the PC where a lot of original Hugo games would be made for (most of which being Edutainment games. Still quite fun). When the series started stagnating, they tried revitalizing it with a Crash Bandicoot ripoff for the PS2 that seemingly did well enough (or at least did in Denmark), but then Hugo went on to just... completely die out. Then in I believe 2013 they tried rebooting the franchise with a mobile game, and now I think he's still doing well enough for little babies, but his glory days as a cultural icon are long past us. It's been common practice for years to take a lesser known game, change the title screen, maybe a few sprites, and then rename it after a more modern/popular game series. Most people know it's not diablo but people will still buy it just to see what it is.

Kind of off-topic and incidental fact: Ardy Lightfoot is another '90s vidya mascot that was attached to an actually good platformer. Not only does it play well, the devs clearly understood the axiom "show, don't tell" as well as the necessity of variety and brevity of encounter so us gamers what have tiny attention spans want to keep the show going.

the cart and cd versions of chuck rock seem to have a sountrack with a few really great songs on them. i wonder if the first bootleg used the same tracks or if they swapped them out

Ardy Lightfoot is another '90s vidya mascot that was attached to an actually good platformer. the game at 27 minutes is labyrinth, and they didn't change anything except the language, even the player has the same sprite.

I can confirm the game at 52:33 is in fact a actual game. I forget the exact name of it but i had it as a kid, They actually didn't change that much about it though. the real one sucks just as hard.
