I'm not really sure if I can find it here in my place in Mindoro island in the Philippines cause I live far from the city, and almost all I can see here is made in China a few times of use made me upset of it's quality
I texted you about race chain last night. This morning I woke up at 4am here in Maine, USA and found this video! Haha! Thank you buckin, you’re the best man
Again, another outstanding discussion and instruction on filing. I find that so relaxing, and I actually seek it out after a long day to decompress 😌 Thank you, my friend, for sharing everything with all of us! Love you all...❤️❤️❤️ Lieutenant Bradley
I love full house grind. Even these older videos still have so much information. You have been such a blessing to us. Thank you for sharing all the stuff in your head.
Learned to hand file my chain on your channel. Love the content and all the vintage saws you have! I get at least 5 tanks on a hood file job all thanks to you! Much love mate, keep up the great content!
You’ve worn your outside elbow muscle out also my friend! Many years of heavy work and experience!! Thank you for teaching me about taking care of my chains and saws as I gear up to clear our destruction by Helene in Swannanoa, near Asheville NC on our third generation farm! I’ve been working against myself and didn’t know. You might never know, but I want to tell you how much you and your outlook have helped me!!! Yours was the only video that I could relate. Many thanks my friend!
Thanks to you I bought one of these Husqvarna Progressive rakers guages. I'm not exactly sure why, but after adjusting the rakers with the Husqvarna, the saw cuts so so much better. I'm guessing the forward angle vs. the flat top, but Wow, what a difference.
I’ve used the Oregon raker gauge for the last 10 years or so. But thanks to this video, I just ordered one of these Husqvarna raker gauges. Thanks for the closeup’s and sharing with us, Buckin!
Buckin, I love you my friend! I watch you taking care of your equipment and I get a motivation and a very keen sense of self sufficiency from keeping your tools working as hard for you as they can and pay them the respect that they are due.
Thank you. Again, something I had made out to be most difficult turned easy and a pleasure to do. Your technique with explanation is what brought it home. I get it. Thanks.
Thanks for showing that about the rakers buckin. I didn't kno u could file them the one way. I always turned the saw around. Thanks brother something else I've learned from u along with many other things. That makes it easier.
Ordered a pair of the triangle files last night. After seeing you do it, I refuse to be scared to try any longer. Going to start on some old chains to see if I can figure it out.
Always love the stuff Buckin, I constantly come back to your sharpening videos to refresh my memory and look at what I'm doing wrong filing and how I can get better. Great tutorial videos, always enjoy watching the 4x4 pull trees and cutting too. I love pulling tree myself.
Retired English tree surgeon here, thanks Billy for this most interesting video; I've always sharpened using a round file, never seen anyone using a flat file to sharpen before. You've given me something to think about there friend! As to lowering the rakers - that's a job I always hated because of that horrible noise, so again, thanks for the tip to make it less unpleasant.
Buckin’, very much appreciate you putting your videos up and sharing your knowledge. These “shorts” are nice. Many times I’m trying to watch when I’m supposed to be other things. 😆 I’d like to drop by one day and say hi. Take care Sir.
Love your videos on sharpening you are very detailed. The video quality is excellent I have been watching you for years. I have learned a lot by watching you! Thank you for being down to earth!!
Thanks for showing us the Carlton Raker Gauge. I bought one,and going to get more. Going to get a Husky Gauge as well. I can watch these Videos several times I always see something I didn't see before.
BUCKIN wow thank u so much brother!!! I was doing my rakers like that straight across and I was wondering why it’s doing that I’m going to try this tonight thank u brother !
Thank you I’m getting better at sharpening and your videos are really tidying up some of my bad habits with the file 😂 Thanks really appreciate your time and kindness into teaching us all . ❤
been using the mini c grind that you taught me.makes tota! sense as only the tips of cutters in contact with the wood.leaves the strength and integrity of the lower gullet.and drive chain linkage.gotta get me one of those files and learn something new.thanks again my friend.!ove, light and respect.maddog
Thanks to this video, I created a monster hardwood chip throwing machine. Around 25 degree handfiled with .025 rakers. It brought my saw to a place it's never been before. Then, no less than 3 minutes in to bucking, I did something silly limbing and hit dirt 😭 I'll try again tomorrow...
First off, love the work you do and have been following now for years. Have a question and I think I know the answer. What exactly do the rakers do and what happens when you don't flatten the raker compared to when you keep them at gauge height? Thanks, and keep up the awesome work! Also sorry for your recent loss.
The rakers controls the depth each tooth digs into the wood if you imagine a wood plane lower the rakers the deeper the cut if their too high and the teeth are sharp it won’t cut well if their too low the saw will be grabby and not cut smooth a raker gauge keeps ya smooth. Buckin once said….. “when standin up n buckin after gettin the gullet what we experience is just beautiful feelings” Hehe ✌️❤️🌲🪵🪓🐝
Hey Buckin, Always Appreciate your time and energy, Ya got What I know it as, Tennis Elbow, That Egg Cup Apparatus should help, I did Upholstery for 15 yrs, It's Repetition that causes it! I had it bad , From the Elbow right to the tip of me fingers! Get well soon, Take the time needed. Enjoy the Day.
Glad to see your healing up Buckin. I see that team red Homelite is making a showin more and more in the videos. Could Buckin be possibly switching from team yellow to red? Lol 😆 🤫 Love the videos. Keep them coming. 👍
Still talk too much but your messages are great. Keep it up. I wish more people would use their influence to spread positive and love. We only get one walk in this world and happiness takes some work and thought. Spreading it is good for everyone. Thanks Brother. DS
Do the rakers BEFORE you file the chain, you'll dull the tooth while doing rakers. I would always switch sides doing rakers, when cutting 6ft to 8ft diameters my saw would run a little bit. Would also take out gullets to keep the chips flying when cutting big wood. Great to see someone do a great job on the art of hand filin!
thank you for showing how to do rakers i've never filed them before i'll try to filing them this fire wood season i'll let you know how it goes thank you Billy Ray
Thanks buckin that close up was the ticket for me I have learned so much from you explaining in details where can a guy get one of those gauge plate i have never seen one before great video as always stay safe oh how's the highboy doing
Thank you for sharing your skill and experience on sharpening . Very helpful and starting to get the hang of sharpening my own chains . On the east coast been cutting a lot of oak all hardwood last six months. Need them chains sharp !
I never thought sharpening chains could be so frustrating! One of my early days I lost half a day from a clutch cover lock and a tangled chain from the box lol... sometimes I almost feel like it's worth it to just get new ones and put them to the side until you're efficient enough to sharpen on sites
If I'm not mistaken, after filing the raker to the right level you should round off the leading edge of the raker with the file to help avoid kickback, especially with a chain like that which doesn't have kickback protection.
I just received my File O Plate and can't wait to check my rakers on my Stihl saw. Really appreciate this very informative video. That double bevel file, where can we find those? Thanks again and God Bless.
Buckin' Billy Ray Where can I purchase the "Carlton File "O" Plate. Watching you on your video tells me that for the first in all me years of filing my saws that I have been filing all wrong. So you can teach an "OLD DOG" new tricks. I'm 73 years old and my first saw was a "Homelite Zip" w/ a 24" bar, it belong to my father. Now I run all Husky's, 394, 395 and my favorite is my "3194" w/ a 6' Cannon bar that I use for cutting slabs. After I fie all my saws the "Buckin' Billy way, the first log to slab will be a 60" dia. inch x 16.6" Redwood that I have been saving. Thanks for the great videos.
It’s what my dr.‘a call “tennis elbow”. That flat style file is easier for a person to see what is happening, but if you are filing the way that you showed on THIS video you should try that triangle style (it’s actually 6 sided though) because you end up with 3 filing edges, not just 2. The flat style is great when you want to also have a file for your depth gauge’s (rakers) but you’ll still need a flat style with you you if you go the 3 sided way. BTW, the 6 sided is what I use. I happy with it so far, but you have to keep a VERY close eye on what your doing with it.
Those little Carlton gauges are the best, such a shame they don't make them anymore. Virtually impossible to find one produced nowadays with near the quality.
the Carlton file o plate he is using is s nice tool for sharpening. Is Carlton still making these? Buckin's tip on sharpening chains for small saw 3/8 lp chain to use a 3/16 file is great. This guy knows his business.
Unfortunately no, Carlton stopped making them some years ago. They can be found here and there on eBay, but the prices have gone up considerably in recent years
Hey Billy, how you doin'? Haven't talked to you for a while. I agree with what you are saying about filing those rakers at an angle, it really makes a difference. The only problem I have is that the ony raker guages we can get are the long ones made by "Oregon Chain" and they have a recessed area that the file goes into and it forces you to file the rakers at 90 degrees. The slot for the file to fit into is only wide enough for the file to fit into and consequently the file cannot be angled. I would sure like to have a raker guage like you use, but if I'm not mistaken you mentioned in one of your video's some time back that those raker guages like yours' are not made any more. So we are stuck with what we have and just have to grit my teeth every time I file the rakers on my chains. On a side note, I wanted to tell you a story. My brother works for a construction company. They were doing a job last year where they had to dismantle some bleachers at a high school. They were made of wood and they started using the company chainsaw to cut them up with. Ray (my brother) looked at the chain on the saw and he told me there was absolutely no gullet at all in that chain. It wouldn't even begin to cut wood. So he began "Getting the Gullet". One of the guy's walked by asked him what the heck he was doing as the guy could see that he wasn't using the file like you would to sharpen the teeth. Ray told him about the gullet and the guy walked off telling Ray he didn't know what he was doing. After establishing the gullet back into that chain and resharpening the teeth the saw cut that wood like it was butter. It surprises the heck out of me that there are so many people that don't know about the gullet on chainsaw chains and what they are there for. OK that's it for now buddy. Keep up the good work on the video's, they are much appreciated. JIm
Buckin' I was always taught from a child to file to the tip of the tooth, I've always questioned why and no one could answer why. My brain tells me to file like sharpening a knife and to go the other way, the file doesn't like it at first but it does seem to hold an edge longer and my shindaiwa 757 eats alot more wood. Also I did send you a message through the website can you let me know if you received it. Thank you for all you do Buckin'.
I'd love to know what brand of files you recommend. Quality files are not that easy to get anymore. Please advise. I got my patch. Gonna put it on my canvas tool bag. Love everything you do. You are a very inspiring person.
Great tips. I'm looking around for the Carlton. Maybe Walker's or Ajacs has some. Would you or have you done a video on felling a tree that is leaned into and being held up by others trees? I have 2 up here in Caycuse I'm would like to have come down. Wanna come up?
I bought a chain from rual King. The chain was 20 bucks..iv been cutting stumps..iv sharpend the chain..when I get in a certain angle the chian doesn't want to cut..could it be I need to file the rakers? These stumps are playing reck havoc.
I always file down. My reasoning is on a microscopic scale you would see burrs on your cutting edge on the up where on the down it would be a sharp edge no burrs. But it really doesn’t matter what ever is comfortable.
friends thx for all the comments, head to the link in the description and grab a Husqvarna raker gauge at Ripsaw. i also use this a lot

The raker is a depth gauge when you file it down you get a bigger bite in the wood.
Cuttin smooth is the key to fast cuttin🤘
As long as it’s a good one with good steel you’ll have it a while.

The west coast saw raker gauge works just like this one and is really nice. I've tried a few and I think it's the best one currently being made.
I agree!

Cool raker gauge. I like too use the Oregon one

Sharp like olfa knife. Thanks for this video!
The tip of your left thumb has to be next level tough, as always good video
great video and very good explaining
Great camera angle sir thank u. Good tips im bta start square filin to so good timing

Father bless you Billy Ray...have a "KIND" day !
thx
Always wondered about what brand that was of a gauge. Also never knew to file that angle! Your making the world cut better haha
In the shops cant find a flat file that has filed edge on the side, it even says Husqvarna on the file
Same
Thanks!
Thank you Daddy

Great fileoplate demo, thanks for sharing.
I remember buying Carlton chains from Baileys back 20 years ago. They cost $10 usd each for a 20” chain back then and they came with a file o plate.

That flat style file is easier for a person to see what is happening, but if you are filing the way that you showed on THIS video you should try that triangle style (it’s actually 6 sided though) because you end up with 3 filing edges, not just 2. That's deadly I love the square ground I've been practicing
