Me too. I ruined a chain 12/23 by filing the rakers waaay tooo far down! The saw will snatch into the log and try to bog itself down if you don't hold it back! It will actually throw a log back at you if you're not careful! But thanks to you Buck , my other chains cut like new and they're 3-5 years old. Thnx again! Love ya my friend!

A few years ago I desperately needed to improve my filing game,After quite a few views and several learning times, I have improved so much ,my saws cut much faster,for all practical purposes ,almost effortless. But I picked up the likes of running a powersaw from watching your videos and my first saw was a 272 husqvarna my dad gave me and I got it back to running and sharpened it and went to cut some with it and by the time I got half way through it it went all sideways haha then I looked up some of your filing videos and thanks to you I learned how to file a powersaw! Buckin. Your right about people spreading the word to count your strokes. I went to the Stihl small engine shop the other day to pick up a raker gauge and out of curiosity i asked the guy what was the best way to sharpen the chain. He told me to look for the worst tooth and file it and count the strokes . Then file the rest of the teeth the same amount of strokes . I did not argue with the guy i just let him go . As i know that your the man with the experience and the know how i believe you 100%. Cheers Buckin.
Graham, that is exactly how the Stihl factory manual describes how to file. I'm with Billy, it's the relationship with the depth gauge (raker) that matters most.
Actually I used to be one that would count my strokes when sharpening my chain until I stumbled on to your channel. Your technique made sense to me so I tried it and boy were you right. Made 100% difference and made my firewood cutting alot more uniform and more fun to cut
I have erred on the side of not filing enough trying to save the metal in the chain! But watching that edge appear as you filed helps a lot. You know, I learned filing by myself and watching others file but not understanding what they were trying to achieve! Showing how to do it helps a lot, thanks for the knowledge!

Thanks Buckin I quit counting the strokes a long time ago! I’ve watched several of Your videos while You were filing on a chain! Even though I’ve used a chainsaw through the Years it’s was just every now and then. But since I retired about 6 to 7months ago I have been using one on a regular basis. But I learned to sharpen a chain by watching You. I’m 65 years old but lord will I plan on doing a lot more work. Been cleaning up some property I have. Buckin thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ for sharing your tips! I am a weekend warrior I guess. Maybe even periodically a chainsaw user. I just sharpened my first chain. Without your videos I wouldn’t have even thought about trying it. All I have to say is it was actually better than when I first started using it. The chainsaw is an inexpensive one but it works. I first pulled the plug because I had an issue starting it. The plug gap was almost closed. I did open it to what it was recommended on another channel. I haven’t had an issue with it since. It is a poulan too. I am just not financially able too purchase a good chainsaw. So again thank you Brother for your tips !!
All my saws cut like a hot knife through butter thanks to you Buckin. A little practice but it’s really all in the feel of the file. Once you learn that, it smooth cuttin from here on out.

First - I hate using a file because they dull so quickly and I always use a Dremel with a chain saw arbor to cut my chains. I always make sure that the edge is sharpened "onto" the edge and not try to sharpen the edge with the tool coming off the edge. Kinda hard to explain, but a barber once taught me that you always sharpen the edge "ON" the tool and not "OFF. The biggest improvement in chains that I recently "discovered" was a gap-toothed chain and I can say that it really REALLY cuts fast and furiously! The true test will be when I have to sharpen it. Love you enthusiasm!
Well Buckin, ive been toying with getting a saw for a while. Spent the last few months watching your videos after coming across them during lockdown. Just got myself a lovely Dolmar PS6100 the other day, man it’s a strong saw. Keep these educational videos coming, they are gold!
It makes sense when you think about how the chain reacts once power is applied,how the depth gauge and then the cutting tooth interact with the wood. Curving cuts are from worn bar rails. Usually from pushing too hard on the bar during the cut and/or running the chain too tight add in a little never flip the bar either. Thanks BBR
I think the style of raker gauge you use helps. Each raker is filed to it's specific tooth, instead of those other styles which bridge over several teeth.
That's exactly what I was thinking, I found the tooth size to matter, but it's because I was using the style of raker gauge that you are describing. If you use the style that only references off of one tooth and you're cutting crooked, it's probably because of the bar.

found your channel a week or so ago. watched your how to sharpen a chainsaw video. I was blown away. i did what you said and the difference was night and day immediately. I couldnt believe it. I've been sharpening my chains wrong all these years. So now i'm hooked on watching your stuff. I have my kids watch it too. 2 of my boys have thier own saws (age 13 and 10) and i always show them stuff like this. My oldest started cutting at age 8 with a small de-limber saw. thats how i start them all out. Now they can learn how to sharpen their saws properly. Cheers to you Buckin'.
Badass! When you used a used up, newly sharpened chain and cut that half inch thick piece of log in no time, I was amazed! Best diy I've seen. I'm a 44 year Toolmaker...Nuf said.
Hi Billy, what I have experienced with long and short teeth cutting hardwood is that the bar jumps around and does a poor job cutting, also if one side of teeth on the chain are long and the other shorter will make half moon cuts, I'm sure you have had this happen also. Getting the rakers all the same height makes are smoother cutting chain also. Thanks, Gary
He did a video with a chain that had nearly a new tooth in one side and the other side was filed right back to almost end of life. The chain cut straight as an arrow because the rakers were set correctly and allowed each tooth to take the same amount of wood as the next. 👍

Love your video and your style. I've watched a ton a video on how to sharpen a chain and only occasional had success. Your the only one that explains exactly what to look for in way that makes sense to me. My only question is how often do check and file the raker.

I was taught to count strokes too but was always speculative. I prefer to just run across them til they have a certain feel... when it’s right you can feel it!
Sorting yourself out a proper workbench and having all your tools sorted helps a lot too. Makes it all a lot more seamless and you fall in to a maintenance routine instead of scrabbling around searching for things and all too often telling yourself "I won't bother today". Glad I finally got round to it.

dumb question... should the 3/8 husqvuarna gauge used in the video work on stihl 3/8 chain? i've got one of these gauges, and when i lay it on the chain... i thought the front edge notch was supposed to sit tight against the preceding tooth, and then the raker comes up through the hole. but... if i situate the gauge that way... the raker is behind the hole it should come through. if i place the raker through the hole, the front notch will sort of rest on the chain or chain rivets... but not up against the preceding tooth.
I cut firewood up to 5 days a week. Can't tell you how many Old-Timers have told me I had to count my strokes, dad included. Feel like I just learned to sharpen a chain for the first time.
Sometimes I get a bad burr on top and side plate, that doesnt seem to go away, till I start cuttin, is it a dull file? Or should I keep goin and it should sharpen out?
Thanks for the visual on the raker gauge ! Never new how to set that up on the tooth to file the raker! I THOUGHT it sat on TOP the tooth and the one prior with the raker in between! NOW I KNOW!!! Chips will fly, sawdust will die! THANKS BUCKIN !

I love all of this. I’m a amateur bucker and all this information is just gold, and this channel is great. But I can’t help thinking Buckin Billy Ray should have been a segment on the Red Green show. An awesome segment. I’d watch that. Come to think about it I already am.
I always thought that when my cut started going sideways it was because my chain needed sharpening. It never occurred to me that is was the channel in my bar being loose causing the crooked cut. Flipping he bar was a great tip and saved me some money too. Thanks Buckin!
They make a bar rail closing tool if the bar rails get spread too bar. There is also a tool to grind the rails so they are flat, in the same plane as eachother. I believe he does grind his rails but does not use a rail closer. If you start with a 0.058 gauge bar and wear it out you can eventually fit 0.063 gauge chain in the bar and by the time the 0.063 gauge wears out the rails it's time to replace the bar anyways.
I hear ya friend, filing out rocked cutters is punishing so I found a good used grinder (a Windsor like the Oregon types) fell in love w/it, now I never touch a file, just keep several razor sharp chains in the saw box. A want ad can get you into a grinder very reasonably. Good luck!
It’s a lot of work to file out a rocked out chain! Might even build character😅 a grinder or rotary tool will get ya cutting a lot faster. Just make sure to do your rakers any time your taking a lot of those teeth down. Good luck. Pay attention and have fun with it n you’ll be deli slicing hardwood like Buckin’ in no time👍

Wow, pouring "Watca" from a gallon can-serious business. 😁👌The shelves are awesome, Buckin. Good comment by Al. Also, I've seen kiln dried wood do what the finishing discipline sometimes defines as "spit-up". The Watco goes on, penetrates perfectly, then in a few minutes rises back to the surface and creates dozens of little ugly Watco wet "bubbles". You simply wet it back down and "dry wipe", and repeat until the condition goes away.

Can use this same technique on Stihl Picco mini chain? I caught some barbed wire in a tree trunk and it tore it up bad. The cutters are extremely small. I’m used to filing .325 and 3/8s chain. I bought a new chain and once it’s wore out I’ll go to a heavier 0.50 gauge bar and chain
I only cut firewood occasionally enough to get 4 or 5 cords a year. I still haven't mastered hand filing in 20 some years...just need more hands on filing. I have a dozen chains and let the rental shop sharpen them mostly. Helps the small mom and pop shop. But want to figure out the handfiling. My sharpening isn't always right on 30° for my Stihl MS290 325 26RM3-81 20" chains. The shop sharpening always last lots longer than my hand filing. Thx for your video
Great case in point! What nice thin straight cuts in the example after 'Hand Filing' and raker filing. I have chains in that near condition. Guess I will see what more I can get out of them. Best.
When I first seen his video on sharpening a chainsaw. I paused the video and went to my building grab my chainsaw a put one of the best filing on the chain that I have ever done. I'm so glad buckin did this. Because not only did it help me now I teach others how to sharpen their chainsaws. So thank you buckin for all you do to help others
Loved picking up new information on vids like this one. I have found my self sharpened chains don't stay sharp as long as when they're new. So I use them for trimming branches off, and lighter work on smaller softer wood. After getting a sharpened one stuck in the tree trunk once or twice, I prefer to use a new one when felling larger and hardwood trees. Don't get me wrong, I get good use out of my chains, but after watching this one I think I'll get better use out of them. As far as counting strokes when sharpening, I stopped that after the first few I did because I found it fruitless.

Yes, those are the good raker gauges!
That's exactly what I was thinking, I found the tooth size to matter, but it's because I was using the style of raker gauge that you are describing. If you use the style that only references off of one tooth and you're cutting crooked, it's probably because of the bar.

found your channel a week or so ago. watched your how to sharpen a chainsaw video. I was blown away. i did what you said and the difference was night and day immediately. I couldnt believe it. I've been sharpening my chains wrong all these years. So now i'm hooked on watching your stuff. I have my kids watch it too. 2 of my boys have thier own saws (age 13 and 10) and i always show them stuff like this. My oldest started cutting at age 8 with a small de-limber saw. thats how i start them all out. Now they can learn how to sharpen their saws properly. Cheers to you Buckin'.

Badass! When you used a used up, newly sharpened chain and cut that half inch thick piece of log in no time, I was amazed! Best diy I've seen. I'm a 44 year Toolmaker...Nuf said.
Hi Billy, what I have experienced with long and short teeth cutting hardwood is that the bar jumps around and does a poor job cutting, also if one side of teeth on the chain are long and the other shorter will make half moon cuts, I'm sure you have had this happen also. Getting the rakers all the same height makes are smoother cutting chain also. Thanks, Gary
Kinda the point of the video. Tooth size makes no difference, long as every raker is sized appropriately to its tooth with a gauge.
He did a video with a chain that had nearly a new tooth in one side and the other side was filed right back to almost end of life. The chain cut straight as an arrow because the rakers were set correctly and allowed each tooth to take the same amount of wood as the next. 👍

Love your video and your style. I've watched a ton a video on how to sharpen a chain and only occasional had success. Your the only one that explains exactly what to look for in way that makes sense to me. My only question is how often do check and file the raker.

I was taught to count strokes too but was always speculative. I prefer to just run across them til they have a certain feel... when it’s right you can feel it!
Thinking things out for yourself gives you solid life skills.
A fellow who drives a vintage Ford like yours definitely has.
Sorting yourself out a proper workbench and having all your tools sorted helps a lot too. Makes it all a lot more seamless and you fall in to a maintenance routine instead of scrabbling around searching for things and all too often telling yourself "I won't bother today".
Glad I finally got round to it.

dumb question... should the 3/8 husqvuarna gauge used in the video work on stihl 3/8 chain? i've got one of these gauges, and when i lay it on the chain... i thought the front edge notch was supposed to sit tight against the preceding tooth, and then the raker comes up through the hole. but... if i situate the gauge that way... the raker is behind the hole it should come through. if i place the raker through the hole, the front notch will sort of rest on the chain or chain rivets... but not up against the preceding tooth.
I cut firewood up to 5 days a week. Can't tell you how many Old-Timers have told me I had to count my strokes, dad included. Feel like I just learned to sharpen a chain for the first time.

Sometimes I get a bad burr on top and side plate, that doesnt seem to go away, till I start cuttin, is it a dull file? Or should I keep goin and it should sharpen out?
Thanks for the visual on the raker gauge ! Never new how to set that up on the tooth to file the raker! I THOUGHT it sat on TOP the tooth and the one prior with the raker in between!

I love all of this. I’m a amateur bucker and all this information is just gold, and this channel is great. But I can’t help thinking Buckin Billy Ray should have been a segment on the Red Green show. An awesome segment. I’d watch that. Come to think about it I already am.
I always thought that when my cut started going sideways it was because my chain needed sharpening. It never occurred to me that is was the channel in my bar being loose causing the crooked cut. Flipping he bar was a great tip and saved me some money too. Thanks Buckin!
They make a bar rail closing tool if the bar rails get spread too bar. There is also a tool to grind the rails so they are flat, in the same plane as eachother. I believe he does grind his rails but does not use a rail closer. If you start with a 0.058 gauge bar and wear it out you can eventually fit 0.063 gauge chain in the bar and by the time the 0.063 gauge wears out the rails it's time to replace the bar anyways.

Always good to see you sharpening these chains. I am having a heck of a time getting a chain sharpened after it got drug through some sand/rocks.
I hear ya friend, filing out rocked cutters is punishing so I found a good used grinder (a Windsor like the Oregon types) fell in love w/it, now I never touch a file, just keep several razor sharp chains in the saw box. A want ad can get you into a grinder very reasonably. Good luck!
It’s a lot of work to file out a rocked out chain! Might even build character😅 a grinder or rotary tool will get ya cutting a lot faster. Just make sure to do your rakers any time your taking a lot of those teeth down. Good luck. Pay attention and have fun with it n you’ll be deli slicing hardwood like Buckin’ in no time👍

It prolongs the life of a file too,you shouldn't saw (yes pun intended) a file when using them just like a hacksaw.

Wow, pouring "Watca" from a gallon can-serious business. 😁👌The shelves are awesome, Buckin. Good comment by Al. Also, I've seen kiln dried wood do what the finishing discipline sometimes defines as "spit-up". The Watco goes on, penetrates perfectly, then in a few minutes rises back to the surface and creates dozens of little ugly Watco wet "bubbles". You simply wet it back down and "dry wipe", and repeat until the condition goes away.

Can use this same technique on Stihl Picco mini chain? I caught some barbed wire in a tree trunk and it tore it up bad. The cutters are extremely small. I’m used to filing .325 and 3/8s chain. I bought a new chain and once it’s wore out I’ll go to a heavier 0.50 gauge bar and chain
I only cut firewood occasionally enough to get 4 or 5 cords a year.
I still haven't mastered hand filing in 20 some years...just need more hands on filing. I have a dozen chains and let the rental shop sharpen them mostly. Helps the small mom and pop shop.
But want to figure out the handfiling. My sharpening isn't always right on 30° for my Stihl MS290 325 26RM3-81 20" chains. The shop sharpening always last lots longer than my hand filing.

Great case in point! What nice thin straight cuts in the example after 'Hand Filing' and raker filing. I have chains in that near condition. Guess I will see what more I can get out of them. Best.
When I first seen his video on sharpening a chainsaw. I paused the video and went to my building grab my chainsaw a put one of the best filing on the chain that I have ever done. I'm so glad buckin did this. Because not only did it help me now I teach others how to sharpen their chainsaws. So thank you buckin for all you do to help others
Loved picking up new information on vids like this one. I have found my self sharpened chains don't stay sharp as long as when they're new. So I use them for trimming branches off, and lighter work on smaller softer wood. After getting a sharpened one stuck in the tree trunk once or twice, I prefer to use a new one when felling larger and hardwood trees. Don't get me wrong, I get good use out of my chains, but after watching this one I think I'll get better use out of them. As far as counting strokes when sharpening, I stopped that after the first few I did because I found it fruitless.
