Just performed this fix on my 2015 EX Fit after almost two years of dealing with the start issue. Car is way out of the warranty period (194600 miles as of this comment) and I've had it since 2016 with 12,500 miles on it at delivery. It's my daily driver for a 40+ mile commute and has gone all over the Southeast and parts of the Midwest.
This video saved me tons of money with just a few hours of my time and some minor discomfort squuezing myself into the floor board to get a better look at things. 😂
Biggest bugger was the bottom side radio bolt. I had to actually squeeze my big head down there to find it properly but once I did the sucker was out. I just cleaned the switch without replacing it but it did what I needed it to do.

Thank youuuuu for this video! I put this off for too long just to get to the point of 15 pushes and fear of getting to/ from work. I followed your video and was able to change the button in about 3~ hours (it took me a minute to find that dang radio screw). I’m a 32 y/o woman with some slight hand tool skills and was able to do this myself. If you’ve been putting this off or are worried you can’t do this… you can!! 💪

Great video. BUT, a little ingenuity and I came up with a tool to remove the switch in about 5 minutes!
Bent an old barbecue skewer to reach around the switch and push the tab in on the far side without any disassembly other than the beauty panel around the instrument cluster and the one to the left of the pushbutton.
Looks like a hook. 1”, then a 90° bend, 2-3” to another 90° and a few inches for a handle.
Work it over the top of the switch and pull it to the left, releasing the tab while using finger to release the other tab.
Takes a little trial and error to get it, but so much easier than a full disassembly 😎

Thank you so much for the step by step video! I was able to replace the switch this weekend but it took way more effort than I expected. My dash trim pieces & lower panel didn't pop out as easily as yours and I had a hell of a time removing the connectors behind the radio since that step wasn't shown in the video. My partner ended up being the one that was able to figure out that part. I almost had a "why isn't this working oh shit" moment when I tried to turn it on & it just beeped at me. Until I figured out that I hadn't reconnected the plug from the lower cigarette lighter/USB panel. Whew. It's as good as new and I'm glad to saved several hundreds of $$$!

Woah. What can I say beyond, THANK YOU!!!
Such a well done video that saved me hundreds of dollars. From start to finish, this took me 1hr and 25 minutes to do myself (and I'm not mechanically inclined). The instructions were so clear and the video covered just about everything.
Just a couple of take away's/tips for those trying this on their own:
    1. When removing the vents, first pry the bottom. There are 3 or so black tabs that hold this piece in pretty tight. Once you pry those free, the rest is pretty straight-forward
    2. I had the non-start problem that Bryan did at the end, but mine wasn't due to a dead/weak battery (I don't think), I just had to reconnect the rest of the electrical wires and then it started right up.
I'm definitely sharing this video! No need to buy a new starter, just clean the switch. (I used Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol like in the video)

Great video, huge help! I also unplugged two connectors on the right side of the radio, so I could pull that out a little more, and another screw below and to the left of the start-stop switch. I had difficulty unplugging the white connector from the back of the start-stop switch, but eventually figured out there's a tab on the top that needs to be depressed. Not a lot of room to get fingers in there!
Also not a bad idea to disconnect the starter battery so you don't drain it or potentially short anything while doing the work.

That is very disappointing. Come on Honda.

Thank you so much for the video. I've had the keyless entry idiot light on for about a year and just recently the car randomly wouldn't start the first time. The last time I looked for a video on how to replace the button I couldn't find one so when I looked again and found this video I was thrilled. I cleaned the gunky contacts on the original part and installed it and it still works. I'll post an update after I've driven it for a while.
As far are your small battery issues:
Honda fit uses the 151R size specific to Honda. I had to replace mine twice in two years. After reading forums I found out you can easily trim the stock battery tray to fit in a standard 51r. In about 5 minutes with some tin snips I clipped off a little bit of the tray and was able to fit the bigger battery. Two and a half years later and no issues. I highly recommend anyone with battery issues to do this modification.

If you haven't already maybe try taking the negative battery cable off for like 10 minutes and then put it back on. That will reset the computer. The light should be off after that. Drive around for a while and if the light comes back on again try cleaning the contacts again. If not it might be time for a new part. Amazon has them for $47.99.

Hey Bryan. Thanks for the video. It was the build-up on the metal contacts (black random lines) that was causing my problem.
I got to the switch from the steering column side instead of the center console side your video showed. I got some finger access after removing the steering column lower panel and unscrewing the Starter Switch panel from the metal base. I had to pull up on the latter panel as well to increase hand clearance (one tab couldn't find its way home now causing a minor gap).
As for the tabs, I placed a shim (wooden coffee stirrer) between the tab closest to the steering and the starter outer housing. As for the opposite but harder tab, I used a modified metal coat hanger. I modified it by straightening out the hanger but leaving the hanging loop intact. It took several attempts to pull the looped part towards the steering to depress that tab while pushing the switch from the backend to pop out. If I had figured it the pathway and modified tool beforehand, the whole operation would have been 10 minutes tops.. Thanks for your inspiration and saving me money I won't necessarily have lying around to spend.

Thanks for posting this video Bryan .Our 2015 EXL (Mexican built, Canadian spec.)seemed to differ from your Fit and has a HVAC touch panel not the same as yours, I managed to get the start button out by removing the cigarette Lighter /HDMI panel and pulling the underneath of the radio /nav HVAC unit plastic finisher out (its hot weather here atm so the plastic flexed without breaking)and getting my hand up in the space from below on top of the console and using finger and thumb to push in the tabs that hold the switch in, releasing it from its surround panel.. Never removed the radio/Nav unit .Also pulled the steering column shroud and air vent and instrument cluster trim , but that was just so I could get a better look at the back of the button switch assembly. Of course I tried to start the car by just plugging the switch in after the contact cleaning process , resulting in a no start (I had not plugged the antenna back in that is on the back of the Cigarette lighter/HDMI port panel). Works OK now I realised and corrected that mistake(after I pulled the start button back out and took it apart again , thinking I had made a mistake when I was re-assembling it the first time)

Thank you, thank you! I could not have done it without your well made video, at least not in the time I did it. Got it done rather quickly. Use a socket / nut driver not a screwdriver on the hex screw like you said 5/16, on the bottom of the radio and use a mirror and a flashlight to see what you are doing for removing and installing that pesky screw/ bolt. I just used some paper towel to hold the screw/bolt in the socket so it would not fall out. All the trim is a bit tight and takes some force to pull out especially the radio is a bit resistant to get out of its "nest" it has a few tight plastic spring clips you have to overcome. I got the real Honda replacement switch, My local Honda wanted a lot for it but there are plenty of online Honda parts dealers that are way cheaper. it might even be an upgraded part since it is not the original part number, it superseded with 02 instead of 01 as the last two digits. It costs a bit more than the cheaper China stuff but I didn't have to wait for a shipment from China for an after market part. Could I have cleaned the switch? Probably, but just like in the video, the old switch is now a spare. My warning light, so far, is no longer on and one push of the button starts my engine.

    • @royfur1
      @royfur1 4 года назад

My Smart Entry System indicator light, that dashboard light with a key, and exclamation point and a WIFI sign, is no longer on. However this light can sometimes be reset by disconnecting the car battery for a few hours. If it comes back on then the problem has not gone away. If your key fob battery is low, this light does not come on. There is a separate warning on your instrument panel that states your key battery is low. My 2015 Fit switch P/N is 35881-T5A-J02 cost $ 88.33 from Browns Honda. They are also on eBay. It took 6 days from ordering to delivery. I was quoted nearly double that from my local Honda dealer. I could have bought a cheaper switch not an OEM part though.

Similar problem to my wife’s 2014 Honda civic. Will push the start button, nothing happens. Push it again to turn car off, then push it again, wiggle it around and will finally start but after minutes of trying. Will replacing/cleaning this starter button fix her problem?

Thats exactly what mine was doing. And it got progressively worse. Read the comments there is a recall on this. You could get it fixed for free.

So is it usually better to take the old button out and replace it with a new one off of Amazon, or just clean the old one and put it back?

If anyone else gets the beeps and blinks shown in the video the culprit is the first electrical item that was disconnected from the lower console. That is the key fob detection/communication antenna and if it's not plugged in or the connector isn't fully seated then it won't be able to find and confirm your key.

Absolutely awesome! Thanks for the detailed disassembly instructions. Those hidden trim screws and catches can be a real bear to figure out if you need to pull a little harder or find another screw.... I used a little electrical contract cleaner and a q-tip to clean it up and back in business with an investment of an hour and a half and zero dollars. Looking for that donate button. Thank you so much!

Thanks for showing it is possible for us DYIers to do. I hate that it is so complicated to get to a part that only needs 10 seconds to clean, yet the $20,000 car won't work at all until it is done! (MAjor Peeve!) They could have just put two Philips head screws on either side of the button, 'stead of having us have to pull all that other stuff out!

The hardest part for me was getting the plug off the back of the start button assembly. If you pull it out some then twist it to the right, its easier to push on the tab to release.

Thanks so much for making this video! It really made taking the starter button out a lot easier!
One little thing I did to be able to visualize where that bottom screw is on the head unit is I used my cell phone and put it on selfie mode so I could see the screen and then I ended up into the dash and then I couldn’t find where the screw was. Otherwise it was very tough For me to figure out where it was and you can’t really crouch down and look up under the dash to see it. Another thing you could do is a mirror. Also another thing I might do or should’ve done is the tab that holds in the starter button I was thinking I might actually crack it off because it will make replacing the button in the future that much easier because you’ll only have to takeoff the left side of the bottom of the dash and then push in on the tab on the left side which should hold the button in place anyway. Just a thought. Thanks again for the great video!

Hi Ana thanks so much for this great video. I am having trouble disconnecting the cable connectin the radio so I can pull the radio out to place on dashboard. Is there a trick to disconnect these two cables? I don’t want to damage the connectors by pullin too hard. Any direction would help. Thanks

  • @wouldratherbehiking1088

Started having the same issue a few months ago. I took it to the dealership I purchased it from and they said replacing the button was covered by the warranty, they "supposedly" replaced it and I say that because a few days later the issue got worse, it took 20 times to start the engine. So I took it back to the dealership, they said it was the battery, so I bought a new battery. The next day, same problem, took several tries to get it to start. I took it back to the dealer and watched as they hooked up their computer to diagnose and still they couldn't figure it out. The mechanic decided to try and blame it on the starter, so now i have an appointment to fork $500 on a new starter....... very frustrated with honda!

I changed the button with a new button. Had a bunch of no start issue and the car kept thinking the key remote is not in the car.
So far, the car has started now…but I still have the Wi-Fi indicator on the dashboard. I guess the new button connectors are corroded or something. 😢

THANK YOU SO MUCH I DO WHAT YOU DID AND CLEAN IT AND IT WAS GOOD BUT IT TOOK ME LIKE THE WHOLE AFTERNOON DOING IT CAUSE THE HARD PART IS PULLING THE RADIO DISPLAY AND THE HARDEST PART IS TAKING THE SCREW UNDER THE RADIO. I DROP 2 SCREWS IN SIDE SOMEWHERE AND END UP GOING TO BUY 2 SIMILAR SCREWS. THIS PART TOOK ME 3 HOURS. TOTALLY EXHAUST. NOW MY CAR IS GOOD AS NEW START FIRST PUSH. THANK YOU SO MUCH COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOUR GUID.

Use a nut driver or socket on a removable screw tip driver, it encapsulates the screw so it won't fall. Use a mirror and flashlight to see what you are doing under the radio, it saves so much time!

You can remove this ignition switch in 15 minutes by removing the trim on the right side of the dash, then remove the lower panel under the steering column, then the glove compartment. You can reach the securing tab of the switch from the glove compartment side. To access the other side securing tab, remove the small panel on the RHS of the steering column.( has horizontal slots ) This gives you access to the other securing tab. Then simply depress both tabs and remove the switch. I've done this several time in 15 minutes only.

Please clarify which component is the “trim” on the right side of the dash. The “dashboard center lower cover” that has the 12v/HDMI/USB ports in it?

    • @kelvinrauber4924
      @kelvinrauber4924 10 месяцев назад

There is a small trim panel facing the driver’s door. This has to be removed first. I think I recall a 8mm hex bolt that has to be removed after this panel comes off.
