  • Nearly 21yrs after her arrival at the Hovercraft Museum at HMS Daedalus, Lee on Solent, A2B via Sea spent the day aboard to see how the former Hoverspeed craft is baring up.
The volunteers at the museum have done a magnificent job maintaining her as a static attraction, repainting her exterior in her former Seaspeed livery and transforming her vehicle deck into an undercover exhibition hall.
Princess Anne used to ply the Dover (UK) to Calais (France) and Boulogne (France) routes until her withdrawal in October 2000.
Images of the former Hoverports can be found under the 'Port Blogs' tab of my website www.a2bviasea.co.uk - there are pictures of the Calais and Dover Hoverports prior to demolition and the interior of Boulogne Hoverport as it is now - some signage remains! There are also pictures of the Pegwell Bay (Ramsgate) hoverport where the former Hoverlloyd hovercraft ( Swift, Sir Christopher, Prince of Wales and Sure ) operated from - you can still see the outline of the old terminal building!

Really nostalgic memories of our family holidays, travelling on board the Princess Anne and the Princess Margaret. As a child I dreamed I could fly on of these. I was invited into the flight deck to sit and watch during a crossing. Got to press some buttons even, it was a core childhood memory! One year we returned from France laden with so much wine, we got stuck at the top of the on-ramp! We all had to get out so dad could drive the car on board! Happy memories!

      Hi. Thanks for watching
🤣🤣 I love that story about the wine 🤣
I have a considerable amount of footage from the 80s and 90s of the hovercraft on VHS tape which I will convert to digital in due course and add to this channel. May be of interest to you?

@A2BviaSeaonTV oh very much so. The first few days of every holiday was me forcing my brother to be copilot to my hand-drawn flight deck of a hovercraft! Destroyed our family VHS camera recording the SRN4 coming into Dover! Sand filled up the microphone and didn't get any audio of that year's holiday!
I remember Dover hoverport very well, but only the outside of Calais, aside from remembering a very small bar, toilets and pedestrian passenger sitting area! If you happen to have any footage of the inside of the Calais hoverport terminal I'd be elated!
The hovercraft was one of the best bits of every French family holiday.
I remember the ship's alarm sounding by accident one year mid-Channel. I was partially traumatised!!
Thanks for this footage once again.

@@cbjones82 Hi. Sorry to hear about the microphone damage owing to sand, but I love the story-nothing like childhood memories.
Yup, have loads of footage. Keep an eye on this RUclips channel for the footage to be uploaded.
In the meantime gonto my Facebook page 'A2B via Sea' and type in key words into 🔍 at the top - things like Hoverport, Hoverspeed, Hoverlloyd, Calais, Boulogne, Dover, Pegwell Bay etc. I uploaded loads of interior photos of the terminals ages ago which you will be able to find.

Thank you for this extended walkaround of this technical marvel of the past! Its so huge! This was really an amazing machine travelling on water at 80 km per hour! I Absolutely agree to what you stated in the description text. Its so cool they could preserve one and maintain it so well!

I think they had always got the configuration of these magnificent machines wrong. Why didnt they make them for passengers only? Pre tunnel days these could have connected with the trains rather than coaches and it would have been a much quicker way to get abroad. Ships are for cars and lorries, its totally wasteful lifting a ton car 6 feet in the air. With a good rail network getting to Paris would have been a doddle. Wasted opportunity.
