Brings back memories of a couple of channel crossings on SR.N4s and N500s in the 1970ies. The quality of this clip is excellent: no blur, no shaking, no Super-8-quality.

...The sound of those four props still send a shiver down my spine. (Of course it was louder when you were there).

I remember being about 5 years old outside the terminal in Dover watching one pull in, and we were remarkably close to it - I was absolutely terrified from the sight and noise!, half hiding behind my Dad's leg.. Amazing machines and it was always the highlight of the summer car journey to the south of France travelling in one, the Princess Anne and Margaret etc. Despite nostalgia, it's hard to explain to someone the experience if they had never seen or been on one!
      Concorde of the seas..

Incredible machines - imagine the excitement these must've caused when they went into service at the end of the 1960's. Will we ever see the likes of this again, I wonder?

I still love at about 3:40 guessing which proteus engine fires up next - just like back then when we were waiting for our „flight“ - Thanks for this great footage!!😂🎉🙏

0:00 without these men, the hovercraft would've been full of eels 👌

I often wondered what would happen if a hovercraft broke down in the middle of the sea. I guess it couldn’t sink?

No. It had buoyancy tanks and would just float like a boat.

@@andrewberridge4630 thank you. Couldn’t have been a pleasant experience though

It happened a few times. Towed into Dover by tugs. They had no steerage, obviously which made it very slow progress.

@noelht1 Even in moderate seas the ride was not so pleasant!

I know it's very giant, old, and powerful, but we need to bring only one remaining hovercraft Princess Anne the last survivor back into English Channel service in 2024, and DFDS is gonna launch its Dover-Calais hovercraft operation called, DFDS Hovercraft

everybody is allowed to dream! If nobody has build the tunnel, the hovercraft’s may still exist or they maybe build a much more modern version. Finally the catamaran ferries are much less stressed by bad wheather, this advantage is an argument which you can’t ignore! And finally the costs of fuel and maintenance are much higher than the catamaran ferry.

Not possible, unless you want to pay?! Even then, metal fatigue and lack of proteus engines prohibit.
