  • I've been asked quite often about the gear I run with. From nutrition/hydration to the GPS watches I use. So I thought I would create a video featuring the top 5 running gear items I use. This is after over a decade plus of running. So here they are, a nutrition gel, shorts/base liner combo, a collapsable windshell, a GPS watch and a waistband. Links to products below:

The naked belt runs small. Measure the waist where u want it to hang. And order one size up. Should fit.

    Great recommendations.

  • @StreadyEddy

I also run with a NAKED band and love it! On sizing they say "measure your waist and order that size - ignore you trouser waist size" for example, I am about. 30 inch waist "trouser waist" but measure about a 34 inch. I wear a 34 inch NAKED band (after a couple of go's.....) and it fits great. Save yourself some trouble and listen to their advice!

Hey Billy great video. I’m in the market for a lighter jacket than the one I have (OR Helium III) and have been considering the Houdini. I think it’s a no-brainer. Also I have a feeling that my watch is about to bite the dust and will have to take a look at the Coros. And finally the naked waist belt... I’m using a really similar product from UltraSpire called the Fitted Race Belt. It goes for around 32$ and it’s probably my favorite piece of gear. For anyone thinking about getting a waist belt look at either the naked one or UltraSpires... you won’t regret it.
    Again great video! Very helpful.

    • @BillyYang
      @BillyYang  5 лет назад +1

Thanks for comment Allen. The Houdini and Coros Apex are both worthwhile investments although since it's only been a few months, can't quite vouch for its long-term durability...yet. But price point ($349 vs $500-600+), battery life and it being so lightweight amongst other things really made me want to look into it more. And I'm glad I did (as a former Suunto guy). Great thing about the Houdini is Patagonia's lifetime commitment to repairing it as needed. I feel like it's a one-time purchase and can focus gear needs on other items.

As soon as I saw the heading, I was thinking, "Naked Running Band." I laughed when I saw it shown in that first panning shot. Just picked one up about a month ago after seeing a YT video of a gal racing an ultra with one. I'd been looking for something other than my Nathan 020 (which I really like), and wasn't sure if I wanted to go with a UD style ultra pack and bottles up front, or some sort of hip/holster rig. The NRB is fantastic, and like you, I'm wearing it on almost all runs. The Camelbak 500ml/17oz soft flask fits great in the back, and has a nice twist lock, so it doesn't leak at all. I recently tried the UD 20oz handheld "bottle" (oval shaped) and like that too. The NRB is flat-out, a must have.
Thanks for the head's up on the Houdini and the UD rain jacket. I wonder if you could use some waterproof spray on the Houdini and give it a little more functionality in the rain?
I appreciate you making such a detailed vid! Thanks!

Yes, I do. Hasn't been an issue yet. Only caveat might be if I wear the poles in the front, then I'd move it. No real stretching - I think it gives a little from when you first purchase but that's about it. And as for the hands...haha, I promise you they're pretty average.

As a native Queenslander can confirm that Bundaberg ginger beer is both delicious and useful for settling a queasy stomach

    Extra thoughts:
    1. gel: CLIF gels get that trick pretty well that you won't end up with two items after opening it. Try the razz flavor.
    2. When you rinse the inliner, a neat trick: spray a whiff of Lysol onto the buttock and the jock area. Better safe than sorry.

Naked is great if, as you mentioned, you get the right size. It's a struggle for folks with a belly. On it, under it, how tight, etc?

I hear ya. They have a pretty broad range so hopefully it can accommodate bigger folks. I wear mine pretty low though because I don't want it directly on my stomach so it seats more on my hips.

Hi, do you use Houdini in races where they require waterproof jacket? What do you use if not Houdini since it is water repellent?

Great! I use a Nathan one that flips on and off. I would also suggest looking into the SL version of the band too - my gf got it, it’s a little skinner but still super functional!

Jordan Mueller hmm...so many out there to choose from. My usual go to’s are Nathan and UD. I’m sure between those guys, you’ll find something that fits the bill
