  • At only 16 years old, Michael McPike was tragically hit by a motor vehicle, suffering a traumatic brain injury, multiple injuries to his spine, leg fractures, nerve injuries, and other complications which left him in a coma. When he entered Helen Hayes Hospital for physical rehabilitation, he was still in a minimally unconscious state, presented with quadriplegia, and was unable to breathe or eat on his own. Over the course of 9 months, however, Mikey’s recovery was extraordinary-he relearned to walk, talk, and care for himself, and even took and passed a NYS Regents exam while in inpatient care!
Mikey was presented with the Helen Hayes MacArthur Rose Award at the 123rd Helen Hayes Hospital Honors Assembly on September 19, 2023.
