Tracy Bonham's 'Mother Mother' is the anthem for anyone with a toxic mother. It's a shame she was a 'one hit wonder', she's extremely talented. Tabitha was always a G, she and that particular Sony exec had problems because he was putting so many restrictions on what she could ask. He was literally standing behind her, ready to shut down the interview if she asked any spicy questions. Edit: Reading these comments thinking, DAMN I'M OLD AS SHIT
I clicked so fast. Such a huge fan of this channel. I’m going to be sad when we run out of VMAs.. but then again there’s plenty of other award shows and unhinged pop culture media to cover thankfully it’s infinite 😂
I was at the 96 VMAs. I was a wide eyed kid from New Zealand in NY for the first time. Was pretty mind blowing. No Doubt were awesome. Tupac and Snoop presented together and they were dressed kind of like pimps.
Love how the pumpkins were trying to act all cool and mysterious saying the award doesn’t mean much to them then gets immediately upset when the interview is cut short 😂 always been little grudge divas
Lol it was the 90's so acting excited was considered lame and uncool, so that's why everybody here is walking around pretending that they don't give a shit
Dennis Miller really was considered the "coolest" back in the mid 90's. Bordello of Blood killed off his momentum REAL quick. I always appreciated how Alanis performed a hidden track in "Forgive Me Love" instead of one of the singles.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I’m begging for you to do 1992 mtv awards next. Nirvana on the stage is legit hilarious and there’s so much lore please bae 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I've said the very same thing!! Legendary performances!! The Black Crows, Nirvana, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Elton John, and even En Vogue, lol. Dana Carvey was an amazing host, and did fantastic with impressions. Quite possibly, my very favorite year of the VMAs.
0:40 it’s cause they base “best new Artist” on “blowing up” essentially… if they’ve been around, but unknown, then hit mainstream success, there it is🤷♂️
Love it how in the same category the iconic and groundbreaking song “bulls on parade” is nominated, a relatively okay song by Metallica wins, go figures Also when the fugees are asked in the preshow about NAS, it’s giving off like they wanted to keep it a surprise before the main show so when the actual performance happened the crowd could go nuts
This is a fantastic video that truly brought me back! I was 21, working as a waiter, and later that year would propose to someone who mere months later would go on to dabble in porn after our breakup. One of the most vivid times of my life. This feels like a hundred years ago, wow what a time for music
Thanks for the blast from the past (that I don’t remember because I was 3)! It’s fun to see all these artists and songs that I love be performed and win awards.

I was a teenager when this was on TV - everyone needs to check out that Smashing Pumpkins video, it was ICONIC. Also, I was just realizing that I was a baby queer back then and I had such a crush on Björk! 🥰
@@eiephants My mom loved the video she was a silent movie lover. She bought the album just for the cover and the one song she didn't care for the rest so she gave the album to me.
😎🤘🏽 yes ! We were the kids with the most diversity in music and ways of representing. This plastic version of it nowadays... Where everyone is is waving their freak flag but it all comes off as the same as one another...is the mainstream version of what we had been exploring . It's kind of what we were fighting for without knowing...
Warms my heart to see Tracy Bonham mentioned in one of these videos! Do yourself a favor and deep dive her music. Her follow up album "Down Here" is a real gem.
You gotta do 1992 which had the epic GNR performance of November Rain (with Elton John) and also when Howard Stern flew in to present the heavy metal award as Fartman. Metallica won but we’re not to pleased with Stern’s antics during their acceptance speech. This was during the time when Stern could rarely get A listers on his show and was still unknown to many people.
I can't even begin to tell you what it was like watching this. I felt like I was in middle school all over again. I was in 8th grade when this happened, this was still the height of MTV, when the only reality tv they had was the real world and road rules, I think, at least on a regular basis, but not even an iota of what it has become today. So many memories watching this reminding me of so many people and events I forgot about.
Missing Mariah Carey on the red carpet in favor of Gwen Stefani in 1996 makes perfect sense. Gwen Stefani was the IT girl in the early to mid 90's. Pop music hadn't taken over the music industry until 99-00. The 90's were all about hip hop, rap, and rock music. Liam Gallagher was known for his terrible disposition, but early MTV loved the chaos at the award shows. I saw Oasis in 96, and Liam pulled many of the same antics at the show I went to. He walked off stage during two different songs and Noel had to take over. He left Noel to carry the show for about 15 minutes before returning to the stage.
Best new artist means they are new to grammys (their first nominations) in 2013 kendrick lamar was nominated for best new artist despite releasing music for 10 years at that point...
I remember one time on the VMAs Iggy Pop was on stage and he threw himself off into the crowd, hoping someone would catch him and perhaps make a wave or something. But no one did, and he fell on the ground and lost a shoe and then his security guard went and got him the shoe back. It was funny and sad at the same time! Surreal! Can't remember which year it was but that image is forever in my mind 😅
Dang, I'm watching this and I'm thinking maybe all the music execs decided to pivot to pop and rap in later years because all the rock stars seem to HATE MTV. So many of them were DRAGGING the VMAS this year, yikes
Yea it wasn't a good image for MTV having that and probably wasn't selling to the masses either. It was great while it lasted, the beavis and butthead era as I like to call it.
20:06 from what i can tell these were all over the place in the late 90s. probably the only remnant from the 900 number era that got carried over, except now it's free!!!
I remember being in Houston and watching this show on tv as a kid, I was 12 and preparing to go to the 7th grade. That 1996 summer, really the whole year was incredible for everything. But I remember The Fugees set and I was happy when they brought Nas out. I remember 2Pac and Snoop presenting the award to Metallica. I remember thinking LL Cool J's performance was very explicit for MTV, I also liked the Bone Thugs performance. I later learned that the members of Van Halen had an issue backstage, and that at the after party Nas had a confrontation with 2Pac. Great times.
Please do 2020 vmas please also I love your videos I just found out about you in my suggestions last month your so funny I love learning past and older award shows that I have or haven't seen before 😁

That is so awesome!! ✌️💖
Great time to be a teenager. When MTV played music and was fun, and artists who actually wrote and played their stuff were in the spotlight.
The Van Halen reunion to present an award and subsequent drama is the stuff of legend.
I think this was the first one I got to watch. I was in sixth grade. I was soooo excited! These videos bring back soo much!

Exactly, lol. They made great music, but seemed super boring to interact with, lol.
they’re real musicians that don’t care about trophies but they should have gotten 5 minutes to talk 😒
