You have to use sticky backed Velcro. I worked in San Diego and now on the beach in Texas. I tell my patients to use the scratchy velcro on the flip flop and the fuzzy side on your foot-shell so you can keep using socks and putting it into shoes. Get the 1.75" wide stuff at lowes, home depot or joanns. Get the black color that matches your flip flop. You will have to clean it off and replace it once a year or so, but it's worth it.

Adding to this. Stick to a 3M brand or another old and extremely well established brand. Don't cheap out!
A friend of mine uses it to help keep his smartwatch at a predictable place on his prosthetic. The cheap brand Velcro lasted him like a day. The "good stuff" has been on his prosthetic for months.

Hi, fellow leg amputee here! I don't really wear flip flops anymore but here's how I would wear flip flops when I did! One option is mini bungee cords that hook on the two side parts of the flip flop and goes behind the ankle area of the prosthetic. I lost all my bungee cords and I ended up doing something else after a little bit. I took an elastic piece and tied it really good on the two side things and the elastic goes behind the ankle part as well. Same concept as the bungee but I personally liked it better because there was nothing but the flip flop to lose or misplace
Even if she isn't looking for a solution to it, I thought I'd share in case anyone else was!

you can get double sided tape - it's made for holding carpet edges down. I use it to hold patterns on wood pieces that I scrollsaw. It holds tightly, but comes off when I'm done & doesn't leave a residue. Added feature is that the glue lubricates the saw blade so the wood isn't burnt at higher blade speeds.

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye 9 месяцев назад +1

The fuzzy velcro would be on her prosthetic for all time then, I think that could get inconvenient and possibly cause wear on a very expensive prosthetic before its time (because that one patch where the velcro is would get extra pressure before the rest of the foot, and dirt would build up around it).
Life without flip flops isn't so bad. I pretty much never wear flip flops unless I need to prevent athletes foot in a public shower - for that she could use crocs, or just wear the flipflop on the non-prosthetic foot (I'm guessing concern regarding athlete's foot on a prosthetic are low, or it could be disinfected.)
It's nice everyone is trying to help her! But she's the expert here. If she gave up flip flops, I'm sure she thought it through.
Honestly, for throw-on-able-ness, a clog like a croc (or Birkenstocks have better quality ones) are just as easy as flip flops, and better for your feet. (I have messed up feet lol.)

One thing I can suggest is using Velcro with adhesive to both surfaces however the catch is to use two a form of Supa glue over the adhesive and press / hold on to the prosthetic and thong surfaces. This ensures that the glue spreads over most areas and the glue holds the rest of no glue.

to everyone suggesting velcro- she'd have to remove the velcro on her foot every single time she took off her flip flop. Usually velcro is pretty sticky so that seems way more annoying and tedious than just wearing another shoe.
If she didn't take the velcro off her foot, things could get stuck to it and she might lose some of the grip for walking (not sure about this but remember that she can't *feel* the foot so it's probably best to leave it as is)

A strip of velcro permenantly glued on is a viable solution, a lot of amputees do this. AmputeeOT has a video about this and showed how she glued a large patch of velcro to the heel with the soft side on the heel and hook side on the flip flop. That way the velcro doesn't interfere if you put on a sock for other shoes. But the comment about reduced traction if going barefoot is a valid concern. Going "barefoot" is really hard on the foot shell which is why Jo has a big hole in the toe of her old foot shell. But she can fix both issues by wearing a sock with treads on the bottom on the prosthetic foot instead of going completely bare.

How thick is your foot - top to bottom - right through the center of the ball, about two finger widths from where your toes start? If it's not thick enough, you'll have issues with flip flops not staying in place, sliding too far onto your foot and cutting into the webbing between your toes, shifting around a lot from side to side, or even walking right out of them. That's what happens to me. I can't even wear flat slides or open heeled slippers. I have to have a heel and no strap between my toes, and I've still had issues with my feet sliding so far forward that in closed-toe shoes they get smashed, or in open-toe my toes stick over the end, as though the sole is too short. It's not, it's just that the straps or body of the shoe (that fit around the ball and arch) aren't snug enough for my feet.

Sort of like how sitting on the floor with legs crossed used to be called "Indian style" before, obviously, the racism of such a name led to it being changed to something like "criss cross apple sauce."

I use Velcro!!! I put a strip of Velcro (hard side) on my foot from just behind the toes to the end of where the foot touches the shoe- closer to the pinky toe side to avoid the arch, then I put the soft side on the hard side of the Velcro, peel the strip, & step into the shoe & step down hard. It’s worked pretty well for me!!!

A lot of amputees do exactly this. AmputeeOT has a video about it and showed how she permanently glued a large patch of velcro on her heel, soft side on the heel/hook side on the flip flop so it doesn't interfere with putting socks on the foot for other shoes. That's a perfect solution if you always wear some sort of shoes, however, Jo seems to go around "barefoot" with her prosthetic a lot and velcro on the heel might cause traction issues on a smooth surface. The solution to that are those socks with treads on the bottom, plus it's less hard on the foot shell (hence the big hole in the toe of her foot shell.)

Truly superior tape, especially for expensive custom pieces that need to be treated with care.

About the stickiness you can use adhesive wipes to get sticker removal off of things which is a small oil based wipe to maybe wipe the tape off of the foot. Im not an amputee so idk if that would affect the foot or not. Just a suggestion. And also i wonder if you could instead maybe try the clear ducktape i forget the name if youre worried about what others think. And if not tape i wonder if you could use a strong velcro to keep the shoe on the foot. Maybe placing a thick layer of good quality velcro where you put the ducktape under the heel. Ofc it would only work on the prosthetic that already has a hole in it as you wouldnt want to ruin your good foot with velcro. But i thought of this bc my aunts dashbord in her truck wont shut so she uses strong velcro to shut it and it works even over speed bumps and pot holes etc. Maybe you could have a designated flipflop prosthetic aka the one with the hole in it lol. Idk just a suggestion from someone who has no experience with amputees. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Seems like a strong rare earth magnet (25 mm x 3mm) embedded in the shoe, would work with a magnet mounted in the flip flop. The modification could be adapted to work with your other shoes/slippers as well.

Maybe a neodymium instead? Magnets are definitely the way.

Flip flops are shoes, holding them to themselves make no sense .

@johndododoe1411 yes flip flops are shoes. The magnets aren't for holding them to themselves. They would be for holding them to her prosthetic foot. They wouldn't leave residue like tape and would make removing the flip flop quicker. The same concept could be applied to other shoes and slippers, for the same reasons.

I'm sure Red Green would love to know that duct tape is a 'space age' look. Lol

A flip-flop need to flip-flop. What maintain them in place is the grip of the 2 first toes. Adding something like a magnet to keep them together can be an option. You can try with double side tape for a prototype.

U mentioned a big hole in the toe. You could create a peg that comes out of the flop and fits snug in the hole which would stop the flop from moving back and forth and could be made quite discrete. The other option is creating a cushion for the thong part of the flop that goes between the toes. Not as sturdy but it would function. As far as ease of use simply stepping on the flop in a particular way would pull it off your foot in both cases.

Just saw a vid from Limb Loss Boss on TT that showed his feet have long strips of velcro on the bottom for his flip-flops. I don't know if this would be a suitable alternative for you, but thought you'd like to consider this option. Love your content!

Try using fun tak by lock rite. It’s removable and won’t leave residue or mess

Don't know if anyone else committed this but what about using command strips-they really hold things together, til you pull the tab. If you do it right you wouldn't even see the tab.

This happens too with organic (GMO free) feet. In flipflops People curl their toes unconsciously in a way that damages the muscles and tendons of the foot.
They also cause a lot of falls and are responsible for a lot of broken bones and even death. My parents didn't believe me and kept wearing flipflops and slippers until the husband of a friend of theirs was killed when he tripped on his flipflops and hit his head
