I'm 42 year's old and I've been watching I Love Lucy since I was 4 years old and I've seen every last episode of I Love Lucy at least 100 times each and your right never has been opened 👍🏾
there are specific episodes that i've watched in excess of 100 times each and i have the dialogue memorized. i keep a few on my dvr and play them when i need to nap. they're like a warm blankie to me. :)
I started it not long ago when I was 15, I already loved old movies and black/white clips (like Buster Keaton and so on) I just needed my free time to pass faster when I stumbled upon Lucy, the first Episodes I saw where Fred freezes from Shock because of some money issue and where Lucy drives the new Pontiac and then tells the story where a driverless car passed her when going downhill. I always loved her since. Thank god I can still watch them with VPN on Amazon, Netflix sadly doesn't have it.
I always thought the door was to a pantry; pantries were very common in NYC in buildings built from the Late 1800's to the early 1900's. By the way, in the colorized versions, the refrigerator and stove would be white, the harvest gold color didn't come in until the 1970's.
My folks had that range and the paperwork that came with it had several colors, including a much darker yellow than I normally associate with 50's appliances. It could be a colorization mistake, and my memory after over 50 years could be faulty, but I do remember noticing the darker tone as a young child.
For decorative reasons, it looks like a flat wall with a door and some shelves inside, keep in mind there is supposed to be a hallway behind it, my Grandma had one like that and it was where the old water heater was and is now a pantry. Like when you open the door, the shelves are stacked top to bottom just behind the frame and then comes the wall.
As a kitchen designer, I see the cabinet next to the icebox, is only approximately 12 inches deep on counter space . This makes the icebox about 13 inches deep. Not enough room for much. I see above the sink wall, there is some livingroom light peeking over the top. The door however is accessible to the hallway outside where one could turn into the front door. Lucy has some 'splainin' to do. Aye yae yae! Where did you put the pot roast? " eeeeeeeeeee."
I googled "I Love Lucy apartment floor plan" and it definately shows that is the door to a small odd shaped room, approximately 1/5 - 1/6th the size of the kitchen. The label is "__ROOM" (?BROOM?) not very legible, but would make sense and does look like it could be a broom closet. When you look at the plan, it will actually make sense as to HOW this is more than a teeny tiny space. Hard to explain, but the floor plan will make sense of it to you. This also would make great sense overall, considering the lack and size of storage spaces we were aware of by watching the show. @@DavidBugea ...I was under the impression that the washing machine and dryer where just outside of the kitchen, on the back porch/service area of the apartment... ...as for what the mysterious door in the kitchen could be- it's one of those shallow closets where you would store your ironing supplies with one of those fold down ironing boards built into the wall, as was prevalent in buildings of that era...
My vote is a pantry... I say this because as you can see that the wall on the right of it is recessed... because of the fridge, so it would be deep enough to be a broom closet.
I have a question. Since the apartment building doesn't look like it was one where rich people, who could afford hired help back when the building was first built, would it still have been built with service doors in these modest apartments? I'm guessing that service doors were something that were apart of more expensive buildings. But, this is just a guess.
Absolutely. My dad used to deliver ice, back when ice boxes were still common, and many houses and apartments had delivery entrances. Dad would just go in with the block of ice, put it in the icebox and leave. Lucy's supposed to be in a typical NYC apartment, and typically, they weren't new, so they had legacy features, which were often not used any longer.
Thedoor That is amazing. I’ve binged watched this show for years, from reruns to video, and I’ve NEVER noticed that door! Your explanation makes since! Easy access.
It was fairly typical for appartements to have a “service” entry from the hallway into the area where the “help” would come and go. Not unusual at all. The only worthy comment here is that it was apparently never used during the filming of the series.
that's what I thought, that it was for food deliveries that would go straight to the kitchen, not have to be brought through the living room, where there may be guests...my grandmother's NYC apartment had one just like it, at a 90 degree angle to the door into the hall, opening into the kitchen (and like Lucy, I never saw it opened, either, may've even been painted shut, I know it had a zillion locks on it!)
I have never noticed thedoor in the episode til now and I don't remember if they have ever opened it in any of the episodes I would assume it leads to the hallway portion of the set.👍 Love your videos and channel.❤️

Thedoor, I'm 34 and have been watching I Love Lucy ever since it used to be on Nick at Night, never did I once notice the door there until watching your video just now lol! It's definitely way more noticeable now in color, Awesome video thank you! 😄👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I used to live in an apartment building from this era and my kitchen had one of these doors! It was a traditional layout for a "Bachelor's Apartment". The extra door allowed single men to hire cooks (because of course single men can't feed themselves) and the "help" didn't have to enter the private area of the apartment. At least that was the explanation my landlord gave me. They were usually permenatly sealed. :)
Seeing these shots in color just blows my mind. I know that’s how the audience at the filming saw them and I’ve seen some of the “home movies” shot but it’s still amazing. Always enjoy your channel and the facts and information 👍
Many old railroad apartments in NYC had rooms that had doors with access to the hallway. Lucy's didn't look like a railroad, but as a kid in the 70's, I remember my aunt having a second entrance door that was just sealed off. Like the Ricardos, she first moved there way back in the 50's. I always thought it was a closet, but you're right, they'd be no room.
“The Door” 🚪 The Ricardo‘s supposedly lived in the Brownstone in Manhattan... Please keep in mind that Brownstones were originally built as “Single-Family” homes. When they got “subdivided” they were lots of extra doors. (It was cheaper just to lock the door and throw away the key and leave people wondering.) I grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY. We have Brownstones up the wazoo here! We had an “extra door” in our bedroom that lead out to the hallway. (My parents put a “Padlock” on it so we couldn’t sneak out late at night when we were teens.) I too adored “I love Lucy” I have seen every single episode, several times and never have I seen that door open.
A lot of older homes have had their floor plans changed over the years, and it's not uncommon to have doors which no longer lead anyplace. I've been in some homes where one side of a doorway has the trim removed and a wall built over it, while the other side still looks like a door except it's nailed shut. I would guess that the door in the set was there for the convenience of performers and crew, but there are plenty of houses that have real doors that no longer serve a purpose.
I like you have seen all of the I love Lucy episodes but never caught this. So in Love with I love Lucy, been watching these episodes since I was a kid. I have the entire series but the ones in color. Fingers crossed!!!
Thedoor that I never noticed until you said something. I've watched so much I Love Lucy, but never noticed it. I was thinking either storage or water heater. Great videos!
Yes I have always wondered what that door was for as well, since I started watching in 1967 when I was 6 years old. I agree with you Nick, I never saw anyone use that door, either. If it was some type of closet, it would have to be pretty shallow since the hallway is in the back of it. Maybe since we never saw anyone use it, maybe it was for the convenience of the actors.
Thedoor upon first glance appears to be a fake broom closet. However, your explanation is genius! That's probably exact what it was used for and the only thing that makes sense. BUT I wonder why it wasn't set up the same way in the second apartment. It would be logical for them to continue to work in the same manner. Either way, I LOVED I Love Lucy growing up. I'm 48 and continue to watch it every single day. It doesn't get much better than that! ❤
As a real estate agent I have seen many NYC apartments, a lot of pre-war apartments have separate doors to the kitchen and living room areas, back in the day people didn’t want to see the kitchen. In what we call rail road apartments the living room is placed on one end with it’s own entrance and the kitchen on the other end with its own entrance and the bedroom located in the middle.
I am enjoying the color versions so thank you for sharing those! I guess I didn't give it much thought, but always thought thedoor was possibly a closet or pantry. You have given us something to think about!
The old NYC apartments, and I lived in one but was not in NYC, that had a door like that and it was normally a broom closet/pantry.
Very good 👍
Yep--the first thing I thought of. The pantry I had was only about 7 shelves and not too deep
Store the broom and mop and bucket there with shelving for the dry goods and cans.
And a pantry doesn't always have to be full depth.
@TheDriftwoodlover These are about half to 3/4 depth normally with a ton of room below the last shelf (storing mop buckets etc... there).
The DOOR is leading to Lucy’s stash of Vitavegtamin.

The answer to all your problems are in this Bittle Lottle!
A lot of apartments have a second door off of the corridor that goes into the kitchen. That way groceries are not brought through the living room.
I had an apartment in New York that had a door just as you describe. They're pretty common

Omg yaaasss I love lucy Tuesdays on nick at night haha.... I still watch it every morning on the hallmark channel at 4am CST.
I am obsessed with I Love Lucy. I never noticed Thedoor. You are my new favorite channel!!
I always thought it was a closet, but you're right, they'd be no room.
thedoor never bothered me...I'm glad you looked into it! Great video :)
“The Door” 🚪
The Ricardo‘s supposedly lived in the Brownstone in Manhattan... Please keep in mind that Brownstones were originally built as “Single-Family” homes. When they got “subdivided” they were lots of extra doors. (It was cheaper just to lock the door and throw away the key and leave people wondering.)
I grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY.
I'm not sure sbout the door, but the colors and the whole ambiance of the kitchen is amazing. Back when even a kitchen was a piece of art!
Thedoor , I always thought it was a pantry/closet, but access door for actors makes a lot of sense.
Thedoor that I never noticed until you said something. I've watched so much I Love Lucy, but never noticed it. I was thinking either storage or water heater. Great videos!
Great observation! I grew up watching I Love Lucy. And I have the box set. And I never noticed or thought about the door.
Great video l never noticed
Yes I have always wondered what that door was for as well, since I started watching in 1967 when I was 6 years old. I agree with you Nick, I never saw anyone use that door, either. If it was some type of closet, it would have to be pretty shallow since the hallway is in the back of it. Maybe since we never saw anyone use it, maybe it was for the convenience of the actors.
I never paid much attention to thedoor before. Thanks for pointing it out.
I never even noticed the door, and I've been an avid fan for 40 years! I really like your analysis!
I am enjoying the color versions so thank you for sharing those! I guess I didn't give it much thought, but always thought thedoor was possibly a closet or pantry. You have given us something to think about!
Thedoor Very interesting observation Rick! As many times as I’ve watched ILL, I’ve never noticed the door! Be hopeful 😎
