Blown Up VW Bus Engine, Can We Repair It For Free?

  • I picked this 1968 vw bus engine up on a property cleanout. after sitting 40 years in the dirt, on an earlier video we found it had dropped a valve and had no compression on 3 cylinders. then tore it down and found it was a rotten mess, lets see if we can bring it back to usefulness as cheap as possible.

Boy did you bring back memories. While away at college with my 63 beetle had one of the valves break when I was up around 65 on an interstate. Towed the car back to the apartment, pulled the engine (it was spring and outside) and found the problem- a busted valve. A $100.00 engine (guaranteed to run but no time length) installed and took us on our honeymoon to the east coast -from Chicagoland- and back.
Rebuilt the engine with the busted valve and drove it for a long time. All done under the vehicle, alone with few tools. Great little engines, was a lot of fun. Now-a-days (53 years later) it's a 3 year old Honda that I don't even self-change the oil. Same honeymoon lady, we're finding out about the preachers words "in sickness and health" meant, but still enjoying life. JimM

Yeah, that and all the other things wrong; roached valves/valvetrain, all the blow-by, general neglect, not enough oil changes (or a crappy oil change interval).
So the modularity of the engine is its strength by far--separate crankcase, cylinders and cylinder heads. And Mustie has a stash to die for.

@@DaBossk I used to love it. Then I got frost nip when I was in the military, now not so much. Have to work twice as hard to keep half as warm!🤪 Used to be that the cold was an annoyance at best, now it is a true pain!

The other day, my wife and I were taking apart an old futon. I told her that I was going to put a little who's your daddy on a stubborn bolt. She asked who I was hanging around with. Thanks for the VW adventure as I have learned a lot.

Mustie1 you have taught me so much over the past two years I’ve been watching you I swear it’s like free engine mechanics weather it be one, two, four, or six cylinders you have taught me so much! I seriously appreciate your knowledge and explanations in every video you do ! This is coming from someone with absolutely no engine knowledge as of almost three years now to being able to diagnose my own issues and every time reverting back to your videos if I have a question or problem.. my man thank you so much keep up with the amazing work!

Future generations will miss the sound of old petrol engines roaring and popping!

When I was taught to lap valves they would test the seal afterwards by putting the valves in, without springs etc., put the head cylinder side up on the bench and before they went home for the night they would fill the area the valves seat in with petrol. The petrol had to still be there in the morning!

Take a triangular file and put grooves across the threads of the nuts to give the crud somewhere to go. This is not to cut new threads, only for cleaning them. 26 years as a machinist taught me this trick.
