It is a good looking aircraft but the design concept and requirements were flawed. Would have been better if they continued to develop the Ye-8, the original Mig-23.
Requirements for most part - our command wanted it to be able to take off from shorter or damaged runways- hence the heavy wing angle-changing mechanism etc. But our engineers could took the best out of this concept with MLD and MiG-27K mods. MLD in right hands could outperform even MiG-29 in a dogfight - I mean training dogfights in 80's in Mary (Turkmenistan ) - which was our soviet Top Gun school. And yes - E-8 concept seems more promising looking from modern days - but we had the plane that we had and it performed better than MiG-21 (for our country - for some our customers it may have seemed other way) it is now also a part of our aviation history. To say more - it was intended to oppose Phantoms - wich it did quite well - and also having it in armed forces constantly upgrading gave enough confidence that our military would have arguments even facing gradual saturation of Western forces with F-15, F-14 and F-16. Meanwhile our constructors could finally work on their new designs MiG-29, Su-27 and MiG-31 more evenly - without unnecessary urge - knowing exact parameters of their adversaries :-)
@@ДмитрийМарков-х6и2щ hi, greetings from México!!! I dont know much obout aviation, but i'm always looking for cold war planes speacially the soviets ones. I've always wondered about the real performances of migs and su's due to here in América looks like we've been forced to eat occidental advertising. Perhaps You might share whit the entusiastics a little more info about this particular jet because here they only talk about how easy the IAF shooted down the mig like they were mosquitos, maybe you may have anothee data. Thanks.
@@santopiantado1161 Salut to Mexico! Concerning IAF statements I'd say with an old soviet anecdote: " Doctor, my neighbour is 60 just as myself, but he says he makes love with his wife four times every night! What can you advise? - Well, I can advise you to say the same..." Being serious, I'd say that it has always been IAF policy to never acknowledge their combat air losses. At first, I must admit that during the only major conflict in which MiG-23's took part - first days of Lebanon War in 1982 Syrian forces really lost 68 planes of all types, of which 12 were shot down by their own AA. Secondly, fighter modification of MiG-23's losses weren't too high - 4 MiG-23MF and 6 MiG-23MS. MiG-23's achieved five victories over IAF fighter planes mostly F-16's. So 1:2 isn't too bad concidering that Syrian air forces had to fight being in disadvantageous positions: IAF planes received targeting from Hawkeyes and could see every Syrian activity, while Syrian planes were flying into Unknown because they didn't have flying radars and mountains reduced abilities of their ground targeting and battle control below 3000m. Also Syrian MiG-23's were outnumbered - 24 MiG-23MF's against 115 IAF 4-th generation planes. Not too bad performance at all. MiG-23 (MF and ML) performed as it was meant to against equal opposition: F-4's, Mirage F-1's etc in Angola, Iraq, Libya.
@@ДмитрийМарков-х6и2щ that was a ver funny and educactional anecdote that i'm certainly planning to use. Its dificult to know the truth about war history, There is a uruganian writer who ones said that the history is always writen by the winner, no matter if its not the truth. In all the conflicts betwen Israel and the arabs countries, aparently they took the better part, or maybe they have acces to a better mass media. Í always think that we've never seen the real capacities of russian weapons, only see what they want to makes us to think about them, it would be nice but not good for the World population seeing that. By the way, There is a spanish guy whit is Chanel called "trufault " and he has some good vídeos about this matter, in fact he made 3 or 4 about the israel-egypt conflict in the 70's were talks about a very popular history of "how Soviet pilots were embarrased" you should chek it out.
@@santopiantado1161 thank you for feedback :-) I'd drop a line or two more just some thoughts and observations: During Vietnam war ( US involvement / aggression phase of it) there was a constant competition between our SAM missiles homing heads and US planes jamming devices. There were periods when our and Vietnamese SAM crews achieved ratio 2 launches per 1 shotdown plane, then Americans tweaked their jamming devices and ratio worsened to 15:1. These periods switched every half a year, and when our weapons experienced difficulties , Vietnamese began to express their dissatisfaction - "What crap did you bring us? We cannot effectively fight with it !". In Vietnam our SAMs performed quite well - 3300 US planes and 1000 Southern Vietnamese planes (that digits include all causes of loss of course) somehow confirm that :-) Nevertheless, our Vietnamese comrades regularly sent us negative feedback about SAM missiles. Why am I telling you this ? Well, in Lebanon in 1982 Syrians never complained that there's something wrong with their MiG-23's. In their (and our) better times Syrians were quite special operators of aerial equipment: I've read / heard stories when they've sent their MiG's to our maintenance plants and our engineers were astonished while observing shirring of aircraft skin... Syrians ignored regulations in manuals and were flying their planes in constant beyond-critical modes ;-) Just like Soviet pilots used american-built P-39 and P-400 during WWII ignoring recommended regime for Allison engines :-)
Christ, these "great plane" comments. Stick some driving music on footage of a 737 Max, and the muppets would be commenting "great plane". The MiG 23 was not a great plane. It was, at best, a short-range, low-payload, already-obsolete-when-deployed plane. At worst, it was unreliable and dangerous. Against the NATO aircraft it would have been fighting, it would not have stood a snowball's chance in hell.
Mig 23 MLD was the best 3 generation fighter... and it could have been upgraded to 4 generation advanced but Russia did not want to spend money on that because it had the 29 and Su 27. Russia let the great mig 23 MLD die
The reply above me is right, it could had easily been upgraded, but there was no need to because the technology was rapidly evolving and the mig 23 was rapidly becoming outdated, and besides, this was russia's first attempt at a variable geometry fighter and new technology isn't always good, actually america's first variable geometry figther, the f111 suffered the same issues, yet you don't shit on that one because it's american and whatever. And also, if it wasn't great, then why did it get upgraded to the mig 27 which was an extremely capable ground pounder if not for it's gun, but it was the same situation because the su 25 was just coming out so russia didn't bother to fix it.
