When you're intelligent, you essentially are alone until you meet someone capable of understanding you. This isn't a dig at anybody. Just people have different wavelengths and being on the same wavelength isn't always that simple.

Isn't it crazy how life works. Nobody would give Mike Mentzer the time of day in the past. Fast forward to today, he has a huge following! People listening to his old tapes and taking great amount of wisdom from it. Mike was a pioneer, his method of training has changed my life and allowed me to appreciate bodybuilding while at the same time appreciating my life. Bodybuilding became a chore, a THING that I had to do 5-6 days a week. When I came across Mike Mentzer, his training methods was a breath of fresh air! There doesn't need to be a constant need to destroy your body! REST, Rest some more and then Rest again. Train to failure, eat well, sleep like a baby and take it easy. Thanks Mike, for all the knowledge and GAINS.
Mike Mentzer, followed by Arthur Jones are my two greatest inspirations in bodybuilding. I remember training my ass off from 13-16. I actually made great progress the first 6 months, but then pretty much spun my wheels 4-5 days a week for the next 2+ years. One day I saw an ad for his book in a muscle magazine - either Musclemag, Ironman, or Flex (can't remember) and I ordered his Heavy Duty book along with the Heavy Duty journal. Those two books changed my entire view on training for the rest of my life. After taking two weeks off I began training once a week and within a couple of weeks I was repping 20lbs more on multiple exercises than I ever had before. My diet, sleep, supplements - none of it was in order by my standards now, but still, I made far superior progress. Several years later I commenced training again after getting out of the military and began utilizing high intensity principles. By this time I had read quite abit of Arthur Jones, and then came across Ken Leistner's articles. Within 3 months of training I was repping 25lbs more on bench than I had ever 1 rep maxed in high school. I remember doing weight chins, and shoulder pressing most of the stack on a machine for reps. I had started at once every 7 days and within 3 months was training once every 10 days. I never got weaker - only stronger. Every workout was 5lbs more for reps - on everything. No supplements, no creatine, no peds. Nuthin. Not even a particularly good diet. It was after this point that I realized I actually had very good genetics for building muscle and strength, but barely average tolerance to exercise stress. I now workout once every 4 days with 4 different workouts - a variation of one of his recommended starting points for frequency. The exercise choices are mine, but the principles I learned primarily come from Mike Mentzer. Imo he was the most intelligent bodybuilder of all time, and I hold him in higher regard than even Arnold who has always been my favorite physique/personality in bodybuilding. Mike Mentzer is the real GOAT.

That’s very wise.
Tom Platz's insights are always valuable, especially when it comes to the old-school training methods. It's a reminder of how much dedication these athletes had.
Tom is such a good guy. can feel his pure, honest emotions. I wish I had a friend like that
Imagine doing decades of research on how to train and no one from your time listens to you. Sad.
Lots of its has now been disproven which is worse.
Its the exact opposite, there have been many studies done on muscular hypertrophy supporting mentzer’s training.
@@somone799 was stating abt when no one listened to him in the 70s due to lack of those studies. From his time. I myself train with principles of mm on exercise.
@@shrekster3990what’s your source
@@shrekster3990 I genuinely don't understand how when guys like him, Dorian were able to achieve that physique through mike's training methods. I've also seen countless comments and posts on the internet confirming that mike's training style worked perfectly for them and a lot of the posts on net were of natural guys
Mikes way of bodybuilding will never die' It will carry on for many generations to come!
You are right brother 💪🏼
HIT? Lol Mike didn’t use hit and no bodybuilder of note used hit. It lives on for people that will drink the koolaid of an 80s meth addict.
Yep, there'll be Gay4Pay drug addicted snorting meth and doing shitty half assed workouts decades from now. 😂
Probably not. He gets rediscovered about once a generation when new lifters want to try a methodology that seems to promise more results for Less work. They try it for a couple months see initial gains and then a sharp drop off and go to more traditional methods.
Tom is really nice person❤
And this shows us, guys, that regardless of how perfect someone looks from the outside on the inside they may be destroyed. Bless his heart.
That 1980 shebang really did break him 💔💔
Can’t blame him. Bodybuilding was his everything. For it all to be ripped away by politics and corruption, heartbreaking.
should of just congratulated Arnold and move on to competing the following year. Why throw away years of work and study?
@@bbrandumbb Thats very easy for you to say. He worked his whole life for the Olympia, and was extremely dedicated. He was confident that he was the winner.
Arnold wasn't the reason, Mike lost his father, his business ruined, his gf broke up with him and meth, these all together made him mentally sick from 1984 to 1990
@bbrandumbb why? So he could be humiliated again and again? It isn't always that easy to just come back next year...especially when training at this level, besides the next year was Franco's turn to steal the Mr.O
Mike Mentzer was my hero when I was starting out and I still believe that the principles that he taught in the 80's, still ring true today. Looking back now in my sixties, I think Mike's biggest enemy was his mind, but not in the sense that one would think. As a dentist and member of the medical community, I can truly say that Mike was an intellectual and brilliant in so many ways. However, in his thirst for truth, he got sucked into the atheistic teachings of Ayn Rand and he had no spiritual base on which to fall back. I believe if Mike had a belief in God or a higher power, his life may have turned out differently in his latter years.

Tom is the golden eagle with golden heart ❤❤bro really understood pain may be he had been through pain but he never let those pain get the worst out of him
When I was growing up I looked up to Arnold Schwarzenegger as I get older I look up to Mike. His method was absolutely astounding...To this day
It's always the good ones that leave early.
❤ We miss you Mike!!!😢
Life doesn’t always go the way you want. Shake it off and keep a positive attitude and work hard. It worked for me in my 50+ years of working life and relationships. All the best to everyone. Mike is a cautionary tale. And simply do not drum or do drugs. All the best to everyone. Be kind. Always.
That's just heartbreaking rest in peace Mike You're a bodybuilding legend can anybody who sets the goals of becoming stronger and fitter
I've noticed one thing about all these guys who pass away early.... they live on forever through there work ❤❤❤
Their
Sometimes being intelligent is a curse. You see more and understand more. It’s very depressing especially when others can’t see or understand what you see and understand.
You also get caught up in too much shit and overthink beyond your focus and you lose control
They could probably make a movie about Mr. Mentzer
that would be awesome
A Legend only is truly admired after his story has been told..R.I.P Mike you inspired me years even after your death may god let you Flex in Heaven right next to every Fallen Legend in history.
He was an awakened man, chosen ones always suffer regardless of their intelligence and mind status
I'm 35 now and recently getting back into fitness and have been listening to Mike's training points on reels. Seems like there's nothing really solid on these guys like a documentary or tv specials. Would really like to see a comprehensive video on the Mentzer's
Good comment: same here.
They say the greater the intelligence the greater the suffering
I don’t agree with that statement.

Mike was an intellectual. This is the curse of knowing too much. It comes to a point where the learning ends and that’s a form of desperation. With nothing to look forward to.
God bless Mike and his brother. May they find peace. And thank you Mike for all your contributions. You’re the Tesla of bodybuilding sport.
honestly mike was so much ahead of his time and he still is, but he just couldnt let go of that loss, which was his downfall like imagine if he said forget it and kept going after the natural limit. he gave so much gold before he died
He really couldn’t get over that 1980 mr Olympia. Sad.

sometimes the people with the most active and strong minds think of things most other people usually passively ignore and it can get to them from time to time.
You can see the good on the outside but you never know a person truly deep down what they are going through.
You never know what people are going through, don't be quick to judge, they are not beneath you and still deserves respect
AS A BODY BUILDER ITS OUR DUTY TO KEEP TRYING ❤❤❤ MIKE LET EGO WIN JUST BE HUMBLE GUYS AND BE STRONG FOR LIFE
Our HEAVY duty to keep trying!
I love the humor, the honesty, the unapologetic love for the waifu’s, and great advice. You sir are my favorite Zenless content creator!
I am following Mike's method and approach. Greatly helped me. Thank you, Mr. Mentzer.
I used to idolize Arnold when i first started training. But between all the shit he did and his “screw your freedoms” attitude to the common man. I grew to see Arnold was just an opportunist and an elitist
Exactly!!! The same here.
💯%
Arnold screw your volume.
Man. They went out like true brothers. His brother died 2 days after him. That’s how I’d be if my little brother died. Brothers til the end. 💪
When you're intelligent, you essentially are alone until you meet someone capable of understanding you. This isn't a dig at anybody. Just people have different wavelengths and being on the same wavelength isn't always that simple.
High intensity training 💪 mikes legacy lives on forever ,people training like that now all thanks to Mike.
Mike Mentzer's advice on training has helped me a lot!
“Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth.”
― Fyodor Dostoevsky
I think that above all that happened that day, he realized that this was the last year he could have competed to win at the end of what is now known as the golden era.
Intelligence and wisdom can draw out even more severe cases of depression. I hate it… now I feel even worse that Mike suffered through that.
*Pain and Suffering are inevitable for a Great Mind and a Deep Heart*
He never saw mike laying in the gutter . Never let the truth get in the way of a good story
I have been slowly incorporating Mike's training philosophy into my workout format. I'm 65 years old and I feel just as strong doing less as opposed to doing more volume. Thank you Mike, decades later your work is helpful for some people who give it a try.
Great minds with crippling addictions...lifes a comedy and yet a tragedy
The politics of body building broke his spirit.
If you were in Weiders stable of promotional YES men, you won contests.
I mean, can you imagine? He stopped medical school to pursue bodybuilding.
Legend ❤
I feel bad about him and his bother, they early passed away, they still had more to give. Mike was really intelligent but never seen to be recognised as it should
Life in those old days was much more competitive and tough then now it seems
Losing hit him hard.. when you dedicate that much of your time and effort into something just to feel cheated in the end must have been a hard pill to swallow
Mike really didn’t deserve to lose those Olympias he has definitely changed the science role in bodybuilding
Science has debunked his HIT bullshit and he placed 5th in that Olympia and looked like shit. Time to get over it.
And the more you know the more you suffer
Mike Mentzer just seems that despite his many blessings(intelligence, good body) also had some real bad luck. Rest in peace Mike.
The Mentzers are one of the greatest gifts and tragedies to bodybuilding.
It was more than 1980... It was nautilus against free weights his teachings went against the Weiders and Arnold's principles, business and money.
Rip mentzer bros
Some of the most brilliant minds In the world get the respect they deserve only after they pass away. Mike Mentzer was a genious who was highly underrated at the time and only because he instructed to train on an opposite to what famous Arnold and others instructed.
You are all legends and when i look at you guys, you'll always be here, in our hearts😢❤

A bad system will destroy a good and innocent man everytime.
A true sigma male that was ahead of his time(but his depression drove him to train some of the greats like Dorian;)😊

Mike had depression in his family . Plus the death of his father really impacted him negatively he loved his father dearly . The only reason he lifted weights was because of his father . Then he gets cheated from an Olympia and just snapped . I feel sorry for mike . He wasn’t a bad man just bad shit happened to him .
