You need to take care of that radiator. The brown-top means that the plastic has aged out and it's about to let go. It takes about an hour and it's one of the few weaknesses ;)
That piece about your clutch switch is the little switch that's in front of the top of your clutch pedal. It's supposed to control your cruise control and most likely the spring is broken and it just reading that the clutch pedal is always disengaged. You can fix it with a mechanical pen spring.

Daily drove my NB1 for almost a full two years and loved it, yes there may not be alot of trunk space BUT thats why you have a parcel shelf and a empty passenger seat AND a drop top.
Daily drive my ND2 and love it. Just took it on a two week 4,700 mile road trip and other than the inevitable road noise at 80+mph, it was perfection. As for it getting attention, the one thing I noticed on the trip (being at a lot of national parks with families around) is that little kids couldn't stop staring at it.

The 6 speed didn’t change much from the 5, cruising on the highway, the rpm’s in top gear is about the same, it’s just an extra gear with a similar ratio.

This is the kind of disparity between cars that I hate on the road though... You might be at 4k RPM, absolutely HUMMING down the road. Understandably not wanting to go any faster, if anything a bit slower probably feels more comfortable. And here I come behind you, sitting at like 1900 rpms in 8th gear, feeling like we are absolutely CRAWLING.... While you're feeling like if we go any faster you might as well be in a street race. This is what makes people road rage I feel like. Not me personally, but I have to say I do get pretty impatient sitting behind people who are probably just going as fast as feels comfortable for the road in their car, only because my car feels like it can go, WANTS TO GO, much much faster. There's just such a huge disparity from one vehicle to the next... I wonder, will it always be like this? Or once everyone is driving a car with 8 gears and 250+ hp, will they finally up the speed limits on all roads (like I already feel like they should)... but then again if they up the limit on the freeway to 80, then I'm going 90... Which feels like nothing in my car, but would be absolutely bonkers to someone in a less poised and especially, slower vehicle, where it takes more than a couple of seconds to get to that speed. Anyway just a thought. My RSX Type S redlines at 8250 rpm and I don't remember it being that high in the rpms at 80 (though I haven't driven it in a minute so I don't remember). Luckily the engine does like to rev and I still get about 30mpg hwy keeping it usually around 70. The tach and speedo are like 1:1 in 6th in my car which is interesting, exactly 2k at 40, exactly 3k at 60, etc.
A tree fell on my NA, now I drive an NB. I think it's better looking, but it gets less attention. My approach is to drive a Miata like you drive a motorcycle, that is to say as though nobody sees you. You have to be aggressively defensive. It's too hot to drive it here in Maryland rn (no AC). I agree that Miata's make great project cars because they're so easy to work on
10:20 Hey David! The clutch switch might refer to the sensor that detects whether the clutch is fully depressed. If the switch breaks or stops working, you might not be able to start the car since the computer only allows the car to start if it registers the clutch as fully depressed. Edit: Speaking from experience. Had clutch switch fail on my NC and the car did not start as a result. Started right up once switch was replaced.

I drive an NA 1.6 and I've never felt like it doesn't have enough torque or power, in fact it's very easy to drive and difficult to stall. I shift at around 4k rpm usually, and I've gotten used to knowing that it's designed to rev so I don't have to worry about the engine on the highway. It's completely stock, only change is an aftermarket radio. The way Mazda built it, it has the perfect balance of great handling and reasonable comfort - as far as I'm concerned, stiffer/lower coilovers and bigger rims will only make the car worse. All I gotta do now is replace the original R12 air conditioning with a modern system so it isn't a total oven, because right now it's too hot to even put the roof down. Everyone either loves you or hates you in a Miata, and many of both groups want to mess with you or make their opinions known. Muscle car guys love you because passing you with V8 roaring makes them giggle, and pedestrians hate you because even if you're going the speed limit you appear to be speeding so they assume you're a dick and yell their disapproval. But, I did recently take the car to a classic car show, and I expected some boomer hate but to my surprise everyone loved it and shared their own Miata stories. I like this little car a lot 😊
I daily my NA8. It's been almost 2yrs now of 56 miles round-trip, 5 days a week, in Houston traffic (bad, but not as bad as ATL), in Houston heat. David, you nailed it: driving my Miata is an event every time. Even in traffic, it is more fun than any other car I've been in. BTW I'm in my 40s, overweight, and my body feels just fine in the Miata.
I bought a 97 miata last month, and have a very similar experience. I was absolutely taken back by how much love they get, and people say stuff to me. Stock motor, it's slow, but it's sooooo fun to drive.. and track. This was supposed to be my dedicated track car, but I daily it every chance I get and no longer want to strip the interior.
I’ve been daily driving an NB1 miata for just over 4 years and it’s so damn good man! I have a blast every time I drive it. A regular drive to the grocery store becomes a top down blast through back roads. My only gripe is… the other people we share the road with. I need to stay cautious of almost always being in other people’s blind spots. Just 2 days ago, a big box truck almost pushed me into a barrier while we’re in traffic. Of course they didn’t signal or check their mirrors so how much of a difference would me not being in their blind spot have made, I’m not sure. However this has happened a couple of times, though it’s not enough to make me scared to drive it. You do have to be more attentive of others, because you’re just one step above a motorcycle pretty much. Other than that, I’ve driven through snow storms, rain storms, over 100 degree heat, and below 0 (I love Massachusetts) with close to 0 issues. Though a new radiator and FM coolant reroute is to thank for no more overheating on the highway anymore.
Daily drove my 1990 NA through nordic winters and everything. Put the hardtop on and its nice and warm, put some good winter tires under it and you will not get stuck in the snow more than any other car. It slides around so nicely and progressively so its not scary at all. It just reminds you that YOU are in control of a vehicle, not the other way around. Only sketchy thing is plain ice with strong sidewind or trucks passing you or you passing them and the fact that compared to new cars, the lights dont do much in the dark up north nights.
When I daily drove my 03 miata and then would drive my supercharged C7 it was such a drastic change and I have to say each is so enjoyable. And I still have the miata, there's something so special about these cars and honestly best car community bar none
ive owned my miata for almost 5 years now, and it never gets old! mostly get people coming up to me at gas stations, drive throught and a lot just cruising in traffic. i just got back from rougly 500 miles of driving this week, mostly highways but was also driving the car very hard just having fun, and i ended up getting about 24mpg average and the engine has some mods to it like cai, full exhaust and timing adjustment so id say thats pretty good numbers for a 20+ year old car. at my hotel i parked where i could see my car from my window, and every evening i would see people coming in and stopping around the car to check it out, take pictures ect. everyone i saw was respectful and didnt touch it thankfully, but its such a cool experience to have all kinds of people enjoy seeing this car, hearing their stories of what they or a family member have/had or even coming across a group of kids saying this is a dream car for them. the miata is such a fun car in so many ways, and every day its a pleasure to own one.

I've had my 97 for almost 5 months now and love it. I daily it to and from work as long as there's no rain because my top leaks bad and has a Crack in the back plastic window. Saving for a new cloth top with glass window. Fun fact I accidentally joined a local Miata group because I just happened to get on the highway when five members were heading to a meet, they waved for me to follow and I joined the Facebook group shortly after the bought me lunch. I now go on monthly cruise and dine meetings with them.
I bought my first Miata ND last year.. absolutely adore it.. most other miata owners wave, which is still a novelty to me. Not the fastest car ive owned, but boy, one of the most fun.
I have a 2002 that I daily during the three seasons when it's not raining. I love it! Just had a construction guy today tell me "that is sitting pretty, hell yeah" thanks dude.
I bought my 1999 10th Anniversary Edition new and Daily'ed it for years... rain snow sunshine! All of it. I don't daily it in the winter unless its pretty/no salt out, but I did for years and LOVED it... I still have the 99 and got an 08 and really enjoy it too. Just awesome cars, so much fund. I am excited in the mornings to drive it into work, then later, drive it home.
I just bought a 99 NB a few months ago and daily drive it. The previous owner installed a crappy set of Tein coilovers but like you said, the car still drove well. I've since swapped for Flyin Miata's stage 2 Koni suspension and it is so much better.
Counterintuitively the best way to pack a bunch of stuff in a Miata is with the top up so you can use that big back shelf. Bonus points for the factory behind seat brace to hold everything in
To possibly answer your question about the CEL clutch switch, just above the clutch pedal pad inside of the car there is supposed to be a little circular rubber pad that the clutch engagement switch(looks and works like a door switch) bumps into whenever you press and release the clutch. If it’s missing like most are, the switch will not engage reliably. It tells the engine when the clutch is engaged to adjust idle. Also you should hear a faint click when you first press in the clutch if it is missing. Hope this helps, you may want to pull the connector for the clutch switch and check the contacts for corrosion while your in that terribly awkward position 😂
@@Fatal_Inertia Actually Mishimoto radiators are not the best replacements. The company as a whole has a reputation of pretty mid quality parts. The best replacement radiators would be Koyorad, CSF, Supermiata, or Flyin' Miata.
If you do plan on replacing the airbags, do be mindful that original airbag control units (particularly the 96) do tend to shit the bed. There's good forums and videos out there for information on it. Functional modules are very tricky to find, but since its just the capacitors that blow you can just replace those for less than 10 bucks and some basic soldering skills. Recently did it in my 96 with success.

I’ve always said regarding the JDM community, the Miata community is some of if not THE most fun guys and girls cause there’s so many different ways to build them from track monsters, canyon carvers, show car and even off-road builds and yet works surprisingly well with everyone. That and they’re the most honest cause they say “ there’s better platforms for performance Or specializing in something but i just like that it makes me smile”
Daily’d my 1991 NA6 for 3.5 years, certainly had some adventures and crazy experiences trying to load with groceries or even firewood, absolute workhorse + fun + reliable. Favorite car I ever owned. Probably would daily to this day if I didn’t crash it like an idiot. Made it up my incline driveway in 4” of snow with my open diff lmao was sideways the whole way up. Had infinite fun on rainy days besides maybe 2-3 times of briefly locking my no ABS brakes. Done 115mph near redline down a slight hill. Crashed multiple times (single vehicle) before the one that took her down, she was a tank and I would never change anything about those DD years besides selling my hard top 😅 Also great choice for teaching someone stick my man. I taught 2-3 on mine as well, by far one of the easiest clutches I have experienced. I had an AP1 S2000 prior to it and thought I would always long for another and while I did always miss the S I felt content as can be with the MX-5. Just rambling but I can’t speak highly enough (also the community thing is huge and 100% they are gas station cars which I enjoyed)
Fun fact about the 6 speed. It doesn’t add an overdrive like you’d think. The extra gear basically slots between 2-3 in the 5 speed giving a shorter 3rd gear. They were paired with a taller tear end so they sit at lower revs but it’s not too significant of a difference
We have an 02 SE. We just got done throwing a Flying Miata turbo kit. We gave it a modest 7PSI and I'd say it's just right. It breaks the tires loose going into 2nd and really brought it to life. Now I am looking to turbo my S30 so it can have it's manhood restored lol.
I bough an NB8C as my first car this year. Since an NA is a lot more expensive in my country, but I dont regret nothing. Even doe I got a BIG rust problem that I needed to repair for a lot of money, but since then. No problems at all. I think rust is the only thing you need to worry about on a Miata. Everything else is just good. Of course the car is low even stock, so getting in and out is not the most comfortable thing to do, but after your in it.. everything is good. Its driver focused, it got enough power to have fun, it is rear wheel drive and as you said: its just super fun to drive. Only thing that sucks is driving on a highway with it. Since the 5 speed is not really ideal for that, but just make some brakes on your roadtrip and its fine. As my first car I couldnt wish for something better to learn on.
one thing i found about driving the NB1 around suburban streets is you can throw it around corners and round about in a way you can't really do in other cars while still being a safe driver. you have the confidence and capability to take 90 degree turns at a swift pace that other cars cannot match while still being in full control with the headroom to spare in case of emergency
Had a 95 Miata for a year or so. Loved it! Had bought it from JRGo. I restored it to where it only needed paint. I was dumb and sold for an S10. Id own another one in a heartbeat.
I have watched a few videos about Miatas. I strangely want one. To learn how to drive a manual shift rear wheel sports car before getting a Mustang GT or something like that . 9:00 is the main reason I sold my Miata, it almost felt like bad luck during my ownership. I had my 97 as a daily for 3 years and each year someone hit it with the same excuse of "I couldn't see you" and it got my mental to the point of one of these days these hits are gonna be something I couldn't walk away from. Now I'm in an 8th gen Si and for these Texas roads I feel wayy safer.
We have an '08 NC with PRHT in gray. A few comments. While I'm just a bit above average size, I can't "get in" to a Miata. I have to slide in. My size 13 feet easily get tangled up in the pedals if I simply "get in" like you do with a normal car. If there is a tight space to open the door, I literally have to lift one of my legs up with my hands to get it into place. You are spot on with the weight distribution. Combined with the light weight and great steering feel, these are the things that are the best part of a Miata. The trans is great too of course, but imho, with multiple manual cars, most modern manuals all seem to shift pretty good. The only people that have approached me about the car are other Miata owners. The highway drone does suck. Not a long distance car imho.
I daily a 93 turbo NA. Second 93 I’ve had. Definitely the answer. It’s not easy to daily and sometimes a hassle but it’s so fun. Only left me stranded once from a fuel pump rely, and thankfully an autozone had one in stock. Treasure Coast Miata quickly became bookmarked in my browser lol
I've had my ND1 for the past 7 months and it is the best purchase I have ever made. I've wanted one since I was in middle school, so its really my attainable dream car, and even then it has somehow surpassed all my expectations. Insanely light, revvy little responsive motor, fantastic manual transmission and wind-in-the-hair fun. The only car I can imagine having after it is another one, maybe an ND3 with the better engine and steering. Love it!
I have a '96 Miata as well! I got it as a birthday present to myself last year! I'm sad I don't have A/C though! I daily drove mine for a while and honestly LOVED it! I only daily drove it because my true daily ('02 RSX) was down for a bit while I did some much needed work to it. I only got to learn manual on trucks before then so this was a DREAM to be able to really learn better. I do agree on the highway, driving at such high RPM is not something I like much, but I still love it! It has allowed me to really learn and start getting comfortable with working on a vehicle. I am also jealous of your headrest speakers, mine didn't have them so I plan to get some later on! I'm super excited to see what you might, or might not do with yours!
That's why I love the 5th Gen Celicas with the pop-ups like my 93 GTS. You get that same Miata feel but the lights are not as huge. Plus I mean, it's a toyta with pop-ups...
I dailied my 90 for 3 years. I still have her but I live in TX with a 45 minute to an hr commute in afterwork traffic and she ain't got ac. Top down does not fix that problem like I thought it would when I bought it. It's the funnest thing I've ever driven and I drive her like a mad man
picked up an ND3 recently, and it's my daily. I really enjoy the experience, though it gets a lot of head turns (doesn't help I got one in crystal red). That's not my thing, personally, but the experience is amazing none-the-less. I just want to add that getting good motoring earplugs really helps with the freeway experience. As a musician, I'm quite familiar with Earaser brand earplugs, and I highly recommend grabbing some for freeway driving (as long as it's legal where you live).
My dad bought a new one in 93, I was 13; still owns it! and I’ve used it as a daily driver many times over the years. Absolutely a blast in the mountains of NC/VA, atrocious/boring on any interstate.
I have a 96 m edition with everything you need to turbo all from flying Miata. Mega squirt, clutch/flywheel, coolant reroute, yada yada with other extra bits. Clutch/flywheel is already in the car. But all for sale if you’re interested man. I’m in NC.. it’s all brand new in the box besides the clutch. Oh yeah and fortune auto coilovers I can yank out if ya want lol. Probably like 600 miles on them and clutch/flywheel.
I owned a 1990 Eagle Talo TSi AWD 5 speed for 18 years for the same reason at 2900lb and 340awhp, it was always an event to drive, daily drove it all that time. I miss it for that reason…. And it’s why I want a Miata now.
Been driving a turbo 99 Miata for 7 years or so now. For a while I replaced dailying it with a supercharged Mach 1 which I still have but don't drive as often now. I was daily driving a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata for about 2 years in there but broke a connecting rod. Just dropped a fully built engine in though with a bigger turbo...so soon I will be dailying the Mazdaspeed again but with hopefully ~350whp or so since that's where I plan on stopping. I actually worked at National Speed up until right before when you had your project done there..but was in Wilmington at the Headquarters when it existed. Maybe once the Mazdaspeed Miata is all broken in and running you'll end up doing a review on it someday.
Daily drove my NB for 5 1/2 years and driven about 100k miles. It was fun and the car was pretty reliable but those summers were brutal lol. (211k miles with ITBs)
Unfortunately the 6 speed did not fix highway rpm. 6th gear in a six speed is basically the same ratio as 5th on the 5 speed. The 6 speed essentially just has shorter gearing and is a little stronger.
For the clutch sensor thing CEL. Thats the starter clutch activator thing, it goes out but does not affect the driving, or even the starting. I have the same thing
I've had 2. The first was a 93 I dailyed for 4 years, and now I have a 96 for the weekend. Every time I get in, I think I really remember it being bigger in here they are, and no camera will do it justice TINY. If you are over 5'9" get ready for tall person mods like cutting out seat foam. Also you left knee sits on the door panel and your right knee on the console. At 70mph you can feel when the A/C kicks on. All that said they are like a go kart all vibes no go
My 2003 is my back daily driver to my Scion xb and let me tell you it is amazing and fun. The thing that sucks is the highway drives and the it always torrential downpour or blazing hot and humid weather here sucks.
I’ve been daily driving my 96 (Layla) for almost 8 years now! She’s driven halfway up and down the east coast four times and once across the country with countless trips up and down New England everywhere in between. The cooling system has failed me three times resulting in two blown head gaskets and one new engine. My headlight motors are now burnt out, my seats are wearing through, speakers blown, dash cracked, windshield split, second soft top falling apart, and some turd backed into her front end hahaha. We’ve gone through a slave cylinder, a clutch, speedo cable, two heater cores, all of her stock shocks, a radiator, and plenty more I can’t think of right now lol. Advice to anyone looking to to it? Upgrade that cooling system. That’s really all you need to make this thing a great, reliable car. And CLEAN YOUR RAIN GUTTERS. My once nearly rust free beloved is rotting through the fenders and it’s becoming an emergency situation (I regret not buying a winter beater) If you’re gonna drive it in the winter, get some sandbags in the trunk with some nice tires and you’ll survive hahaha Layla has become a staple in so many core memories between all of my friends and I. Words can’t even do justice how close I’ve come with so many friends I’ve had in the passenger seat shooting shit and seeing new stuff together. I won’t lie, these days I’m struggling to give her the financial support she needs to stay on the road for another 8. I’m told regularly by friends, family, and my girlfriend that they’d kill me for giving her up. If you’re wanting to make a Miata your daily, just go for it man, you’ll make it work! So I’ve owned my 1990 Miata since 2016 and it’s been a weird 8 years, because the first 3-4 years of ownership it wasn’t cool to own these cars. But the last 3 years the car gets a lot of compliments and questions, and I’m over hear like oh great here we go, but nope people are stoked to see it. lol

dreamed of always having a nice little miata but tragically that dream died the first time i tried to sit in one. im not overweight but i am at 6'5" and most critically for this car i have size 15 shoes. i simply would not fit in the car even sliding my feet out from behing the pedals :( i love passing miatas and i always give the folks driving them a wave or flick my headlights at em to get em to do the pop ups. its a car i love and can appreciate from a far but can never comfortably drive or ride in myself. these goofy little matchbox cars are beloved by folks i think because its clear that no matter what side of car culture u fall on that if you own one ur here for the love of the experience.
I still love my NB, but it's been neglected since I haven't had time to work on that poor girl for over 5 years. I'm actually getting hyped to restore my baby once and for all since I'm about to leave my job and stay home for a while. Ordered new wheels and an engine kit to start off with, so it's gonna be fun.
I inherited a pretty cherry totally stock 90 NA and it's ruined driving every other car for me. It really does bring a surprising amount of attention. Only downside is the motorcycle-like lack of visibility from other drivers combined with the vulnerability of the chassis. Also worked great to teach my wife stick too
Light is prolly for the upper clutch switch .(they go out a bit but easy n cheap) .. Sometimes I try to blend in as a miata in my first gen RX-7. It's almost like the miata predecessor in a lot of ways. I will say, I was not at all ready for how big the pop-ups look from the inside of an NA, they appear vastly smaller on the first gen. Both great cars, but the miata definitely feels a lot more modern (and I guess at 17 years newer it should be). Anywho, I daily drove my SA for about seven years and know exactly how you feel on the highway, but try adding an old worn out steering box with an inch of play to the mix and then try to enjoy some fast, long, straight roads (it certainly keeps your arms awake)... Around town and backroads are really where it's at home.
Where I live, after I saw other Miatas, they made sarcastic expressions at me. After that happening a few times, I don't even give other Miatas a look. And now I don't own one. Would still get one when I can. Likely the last generation.
I honestly got more compliments on drivingba miata and my old r53 mini than I have gotten driving my camaro the community around miatas is almost a cult but a very kind cult. I just bought me second miata to race vintage cars and I'm welding in a 1 inch drop plate to mount my seat. I'm around 6'4" tall and barely fit in the car but they are to much fun.
I have one (NZDM red 96 manual hard top with no airbags, abs, ac) and I don't love it anymore. Hasn't been reliable over the 9 years but was fun to drive in the hills to beaches on good days. Good memories but want it gone.
i daily drive my NB miata and never have an issue i owned a R34 GTT for awhile and that thing SUUCKED through fuel i was filling up/breaking parts more then i was having fun xD the miata owned for over a year now and 0 issues the engine light is on.. but its fine just a code gotta clear , i have a subaru wagon but i hardly use it only when i need to fit more passengers in , miata is ALWAYS THE ANSWER 100% i want a ND at some point and widebody it they look nice and aggressive / miata and civic are the best cars ive owned or the most fun and reliable ones

once went to CostCo with my Miata and forgot when i was in there. came out and had to put my best Tetris hat on. Also the one good thing about not being tall.

You need to take care of that radiator. The brown-top means that the plastic has aged out and it's about to let go. It takes about an hour and it's one of the few weaknesses ;)
That piece about your clutch switch is the little switch that's in front of the top of your clutch pedal. It's supposed to control your cruise control and most likely the spring is broken and it just reading that the clutch pedal is always disengaged. You can fix it with a mechanical pen spring.
Greg Peters (Miata Dad) has a video on how to fix it. Though, he fixed it for launch control purposes.

Daily drove my NB1 for almost a full two years and loved it, yes there may not be alot of trunk space BUT thats why you have a parcel shelf and a empty passenger seat AND a drop top.

Daily drive my ND2 and love it. Just took it on a two week 4,700 mile road trip and other than the inevitable road noise at 80+mph, it was perfection. As for it getting attention, the one thing I noticed on the trip (being at a lot of national parks with families around) is that little kids couldn't stop staring at it.

The 6 speed didn’t change much from the 5, cruising on the highway, the rpm’s in top gear is about the same, it’s just an extra gear with a similar ratio.
Yup. I prefer the 5 speed over the 6. 6 speed is like basically the same thing except for having another gear to go through.

This is the kind of disparity between cars that I hate on the road though... You might be at 4k RPM, absolutely HUMMING down the road. Understandably not wanting to go any faster, if anything a bit slower probably feels more comfortable. And here I come behind you, sitting at like 1900 rpms in 8th gear, feeling like we are absolutely CRAWLING.... While you're feeling like if we go any faster you might as well be in a street race.
This is what makes people road rage I feel like. Not me personally, but I have to say I do get pretty impatient sitting behind people who are probably just going as fast as feels comfortable for the road in their car, only because my car feels like it can go, WANTS TO GO, much much faster.
There's just such a huge disparity from one vehicle to the next... I wonder, will it always be like this? Or once everyone is driving a car with 8 gears and 250+ hp, will they finally up the speed limits on all roads (like I already feel like they should)... but then again if they up the limit on the freeway to 80, then I'm going 90... Which feels like nothing in my car, but would be absolutely bonkers to someone in a less poised and especially, slower vehicle, where it takes more than a couple of seconds to get to that speed. Anyway just a thought.
My RSX Type S redlines at 8250 rpm and I don't remember it being that high in the rpms at 80 (though I haven't driven it in a minute so I don't remember). It kind of surprised me to hear you say that.
@@derekspringer6448 I drove a previous Miata home from taking delivery, 75 mph the whole way home at like 3600 rpm, the 1.8 Miata’s went to 7000 redline, not so much the engine just the gearing. Miata’s are geared super short because no power
@@derekspringer6448Redline is at 7k. Funny how 80 used to feel slow even in my old buick, now 80 is pushing it. I try to stay off to the right on the freeway haha. Luckily the engine does like to rev and I still get about 30mpg hwy keeping it usually around 70. The tach and speedo are like 1:1 in 6th in my car which is interesting, exactly 2k at 40, exactly 3k at 60, etc.
A tree fell on my NA, now I drive an NB. I think it's better looking, but it gets less attention. My approach is to drive a Miata like you drive a motorcycle, that is to say as though nobody sees you. You have to be aggressively defensive. It's too hot to drive it here in Maryland rn (no AC).

10:20 Hey David! The clutch switch might refer to the sensor that detects whether the clutch is fully depressed. If the switch breaks or stops working, you might not be able to start the car since the computer only allows the car to start if it registers the clutch as fully depressed.
Edit: Speaking from experience. Had clutch switch fail on my NC and the car did not start as a result. Started right up once switch was replaced.
Miata Is Always the Answer!!!!!! Been daily driving my 92 BRG I am 50 years old.... It has a fully forged 1.9 engine with ITB's and huge cams. Red line is 9,000 RPM. The noise is EPIC !!!!!!!!!
I drive an NA 1.6 and I've never felt like it doesn't have enough torque or power, in fact it's very easy to drive and difficult to stall. I shift at around 4k rpm usually, and I've gotten used to knowing that it's designed to rev so I don't have to worry about the engine on the highway. It's completely stock, only change is an aftermarket radio. The way Mazda built it, it has the perfect balance of great handling and reasonable comfort - as far as I'm concerned, stiffer/lower coilovers and bigger rims will only make the car worse. All I gotta do now is replace the original R12 air conditioning with a modern system so it isn't a total oven, because right now it's too hot to even put the roof down.
Everyone either loves you or hates you in a Miata, and many of both groups want to mess with you or make their opinions known. Muscle car guys love you because passing you with V8 roaring makes them giggle, and pedestrians hate you because even if you're going the speed limit you appear to be speeding so they assume you're a dick and yell their disapproval. But, I did recently take the car to a classic car show, and I expected some boomer hate but to my surprise everyone loved it and shared their own Miata stories. I like this little car a lot 😊
I daily my NA8. It's been almost 2yrs now of 56 miles round-trip, 5 days a week, in Houston traffic (bad, but not as bad as ATL), in Houston heat. David, you nailed it: driving my Miata is an event every time. Even in traffic, it is more fun than any other car I've been in. BTW I'm in my 40s, overweight, and my body feels just fine in the Miata.

Stock motor, it's slow, but it's sooooo fun to drive.. and track.

I’ve been daily driving an NB1 miata for just over 4 years and it’s so damn good man! I have a blast every time I drive it. A regular drive to the grocery store becomes a top down blast through back roads. My only gripe is… the other people we share the road with. I need to stay cautious of almost always being in other people’s blind spots. Just 2 days ago, a big box truck almost pushed me into a barrier while we’re in traffic. Of course they didn’t signal or check their mirrors so how much of a difference would me not being in their blind spot have made, I’m not sure. However this has happened a couple of times, though it’s not enough to make me scared to drive it. You do have to be more attentive of others, because you’re just one step above a motorcycle pretty much. Other than that, I’ve driven through snow storms, rain storms, over 100 degree heat, and below 0 (I love Massachusetts) with close to 0 issues. Though a new radiator and FM coolant reroute is to thank for no more overheating on the highway anymore.
Daily drove my 1990 NA through nordic winters and everything. Put the hardtop on and its nice and warm, put some good winter tires under it and you will not get stuck in the snow more than any other car. It slides around so nicely and progressively so its not scary at all. It just reminds you that YOU are in control of a vehicle, not the other way around. Only sketchy thing is plain ice with strong sidewind or trucks passing you or you passing them and the fact that compared to new cars, the lights dont do much in the dark up north nights.
When I daily drove my 03 miata and then would drive my supercharged C7 it was such a drastic change and I have to say each is so enjoyable. And I still have the miata, there's something so special about these cars and honestly best car community bar none
ive owned my miata for almost 5 years now, and it never gets old! mostly get people coming up to me at gas stations, drive throught and a lot just cruising in traffic. i just got back from rougly 500 miles of driving this week, mostly highways but was also driving the car very hard just having fun, and i ended up getting about 24mpg average and the engine has some mods to it like cai, full exhaust and timing adjustment so id say thats pretty good numbers for a 20+ year old car. at my hotel i parked where i could see my car from my window, and every evening i would see people coming in and stopping around the car to check it out, take pictures ect. everyone i saw was respectful and didnt touch it thankfully, but its such a cool experience to have all kinds of people enjoy seeing this car, hearing their stories of what they or a family member have/had or even coming across a group of kids saying this is a dream car for them. the miata is such a fun car in so many ways, and every day its a pleasure to own one.

I've had my 97 for almost 5 months now and love it. I daily it to and from work as long as there's no rain because my top leaks bad and has a Crack in the back plastic window. Saving for a new cloth top with glass window. Fun fact I accidentally joined a local Miata group because I just happened to get on the highway when five members were heading to a meet, they waved for me to follow and I joined the Facebook group shortly after the bought me lunch. I now go on monthly cruise and dine meetings with them.
I bought my first Miata ND last year.. absolutely adore it.. most other miata owners wave, which is still a novelty to me. Not the fastest car ive owned, but boy, one of the most fun.
I have a 2002 that I daily during the three seasons when it's not raining. I love it! Just had a construction guy today tell me "that is sitting pretty, hell yeah" thanks dude.
I bought my 1999 10th Anniversary Edition new and Daily'ed it for years... rain snow sunshine! All of it. I don't daily it in the winter unless its pretty/no salt out, but I did for years and LOVED it... I still have the 99 and got an 08 and really enjoy it too. Just awesome cars, so much fund. I am excited in the mornings to drive it into work, then later, drive it home.
I just bought a 99 NB a few months ago and daily drive it. The previous owner installed a crappy set of Tein coilovers but like you said, the car still drove well. I've since swapped for Flyin Miata's stage 2 Koni suspension and it is so much better.
My 1994 NA is my daily driver and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love that thing.
Counterintuitively the best way to pack a bunch of stuff in a Miata is with the top up so you can use that big back shelf.

To possibly answer your question about the CEL clutch switch, just above the clutch pedal pad inside of the car there is supposed to be a little circular rubber pad that the clutch engagement switch(looks and works like a door switch) bumps into whenever you press and release the clutch. If it’s missing like most are, the switch will not engage reliably. It tells the engine when the clutch is engaged to adjust idle. Also you should hear a faint click when you first press in the clutch if it is missing. Hope this helps, you may want to pull the connector for the clutch switch and check the contacts for corrosion while your in that terribly awkward position 😂

Can confirm, my NB would get a bit hot if I was driving uphill on canyon roads during the summer. Mishimoto is the recommended replacement
@@Fatal_Inertia Actually Mishimoto radiators are not the best replacements. The company as a whole has a reputation of pretty mid quality parts. The best replacement radiators would be Koyorad, CSF, Supermiata, or Flyin' Miata.
If you do plan on replacing the airbags, do be mindful that original airbag control units (particularly the 96) do tend to shit the bed. There's good forums and videos out there for information on it. Functional modules are very tricky to find, but since its just the capacitors that blow you can just replace those for less than 10 bucks and some basic soldering skills. Recently did it in my 96 with success.

I’ve always said regarding the JDM community, the Miata community is some of if not THE most fun guys and girls cause there’s so many different ways to build them from track monsters, canyon carvers, show car and even off-road builds and yet works surprisingly well with everyone. That and they’re the most honest cause they say “ there’s better platforms for performance Or specializing in something but i just like that it makes me smile”
I've driven my NA as a daily for over 3 years, it's not perfect, but it worked. it brought me joy, i still got compliments, the answer is miata.
Daily’d my 1991 NA6 for 3.5 years, certainly had some adventures and crazy experiences trying to load with groceries or even firewood, absolute workhorse + fun + reliable. Favorite car I ever owned. Probably would daily to this day if I didn’t crash it like an idiot.
Made it up my incline driveway in 4” of snow with my open diff lmao was sideways the whole way up. Had infinite fun on rainy days besides maybe 2-3 times of briefly locking my no ABS brakes. Done 115mph near redline down a slight hill. Crashed multiple times (single vehicle) before the one that took her down, she was a tank and I would never change anything about those DD years besides selling my hard top 😅
Also great choice for teaching someone stick my man. I taught 2-3 on mine as well, by far one of the easiest clutches I have experienced. I had an AP1 S2000 prior to it and thought I would always long for another and while I did always miss the S I felt content as can be with the MX-5. Just rambling but I can’t speak highly enough (also the community thing is huge and 100% they are gas station cars which I enjoyed)
Fun fact about the 6 speed. It doesn’t add an overdrive like you’d think. The extra gear basically slots between 2-3 in the 5 speed giving a shorter 3rd gear. They were paired with a taller tear end so they sit at lower revs but it’s not too significant of a difference
We have an 02 SE. We just got done throwing a Flying Miata turbo kit. We gave it a modest 7PSI and I'd say it's just right. It breaks the tires loose going into 2nd and really brought it to life. Now I am looking to turbo my S30 so it can have it's manhood restored lol.
I bough an NB8C as my first car this year. Since an NA is a lot more expensive in my country, but I dont regret nothing. Even doe I got a BIG rust problem that I needed to repair for a lot of money, but since then. No problems at all. I think rust is the only thing you need to worry about on a Miata. Everything else is just good. Of course the car is low even stock, so getting in and out is not the most comfortable thing to do, but after your in it.. everything is good. Its driver focused, it got enough power to have fun, it is rear wheel drive and as you said: its just super fun to drive. Only thing that sucks is driving on a highway with it. Since the 5 speed is not really ideal for that, but just make some brakes on your roadtrip and its fine.
As my first car I couldnt wish for something better to learn on.
one thing i found about driving the NB1 around suburban streets is you can throw it around corners and round about in a way you can't really do in other cars while still being a safe driver. you have the confidence and capability to take 90 degree turns at a swift pace that other cars cannot match while still being in full control with the headroom to spare in case of emergency

9:00 is the main reason I sold my Miata, it almost felt like bad luck during my ownership. I had my 97 as a daily for 3 years and each year someone hit it with the same excuse of "I couldn't see you" and it got my mental to the point of one of these days these hits are gonna be something I couldn't walk away from. Now I'm in an 8th gen Si and for these Texas roads I feel wayy safer.
We have an '08 NC with PRHT in gray. A few comments. While I'm just a bit above average size, I can't "get in" to a Miata. I have to slide in. My size 13 feet easily get tangled up in the pedals if I simply "get in" like you do with a normal car. If there is a tight space to open the door, I literally have to lift one of my legs up with my hands to get it into place. You are spot on with the weight distribution. Combined with the light weight and great steering feel, these are the things that are the best part of a Miata. The trans is great too of course, but imho, with multiple manual cars, most modern manuals all seem to shift pretty good. The only people that have approached me about the car are other Miata owners. The highway drone does suck. Not a long distance car imho.
I daily a 93 turbo NA. Second 93 I’ve had. Definitely the answer. It’s not easy to daily and sometimes a hassle but it’s so fun. Only left me stranded once from a fuel pump rely, and thankfully an autozone had one in stock. Treasure Coast Miata quickly became bookmarked in my browser lol
I've had my ND1 for the past 7 months and it is the best purchase I have ever made. I've wanted one since I was in middle school, so its really my attainable dream car, and even then it has somehow surpassed all my expectations. Insanely light, revvy little responsive motor, fantastic manual transmission and wind-in-the-hair fun. The only car I can imagine having after it is another one, maybe an ND3 with the better engine and steering. Love it!
I have a '96 Miata as well! I got it as a birthday present to myself last year! I'm sad I don't have A/C though! I daily drove mine for a while and honestly LOVED it! I only daily drove it because my true daily ('02 RSX) was down for a bit while I did some much needed work to it. I only got to learn manual on trucks before then so this was a DREAM to be able to really learn better. I do agree on the highway, driving at such high RPM is not something I like much, but I still love it! It has allowed me to really learn and start getting comfortable with working on a vehicle. I am also jealous of your headrest speakers, mine didn't have them so I plan to get some later on! I'm super excited to see what you might, or might not do with yours!
That's why I love the 5th Gen Celicas with the pop-ups like my 93 GTS. You get that same Miata feel but the lights are not as huge. Plus I mean, it's a toyta with pop-ups...
I dailied my 90 for 3 years. I still have her but I live in TX with a 45 minute to an hr commute in afterwork traffic and she ain't got ac. Top down does not fix that problem like I thought it would when I bought it. It's the funnest thing I've ever driven and I drive her like a mad man

When I got my NB, I found a lot of value in the MSF (Motocycle Safety Foundation) classes I took.
picked up an ND3 recently, and it's my daily. I really enjoy the experience, though it gets a lot of head turns (doesn't help I got one in crystal red). That's not my thing, personally, but the experience is amazing none-the-less. I just want to add that getting good motoring earplugs really helps with the freeway experience. As a musician, I'm quite familiar with Earaser brand earplugs, and I highly recommend grabbing some for freeway driving (as long as it's legal where you live).
My dad bought a new one in 93, I was 13; still owns it! and I’ve used it as a daily driver many times over the years. Absolutely a blast in the mountains of NC/VA, atrocious/boring on any interstate.

I have a 96 m edition with everything you need to turbo all from flying Miata. Mega squirt, clutch/flywheel, coolant reroute, yada yada with other extra bits. Clutch/flywheel is already in the car. But all for sale if you’re interested man. I’m in NC.. it’s all brand new in the box besides the clutch. Oh yeah and fortune auto coilovers I can yank out if ya want lol. Probably like 600 miles on them and clutch/flywheel.
I owned a 1990 Eagle Talo TSi AWD 5 speed for 18 years for the same reason at 2900lb and 340awhp, it was always an event to drive, daily drove it all that time.
I miss it for that reason…. And it’s why I want a Miata now.

Been driving a turbo 99 Miata for 7 years or so now. For a while I replaced dailying it with a supercharged Mach 1 which I still have but don't drive as often now. I was daily driving a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata for about 2 years in there but broke a connecting rod. Just dropped a fully built engine in though with a bigger turbo...so soon I will be dailying the Mazdaspeed again but with hopefully ~350whp or so since that's where I plan on stopping. I actually worked at National Speed up until right before when you had your project done there..but was in Wilmington at the Headquarters when it existed. Maybe once the Mazdaspeed Miata is all broken in and running you'll end up doing a review on it someday.
I got my ND early this year. I love it and I’m planning a pretty long road trip to Colorado from Virginia later this year in it.

Daily drove my NB for 5 1/2 years and driven about 100k miles. It was fun and the car was pretty reliable but those summers were brutal lol. (211k miles with ITBs)
Unfortunately the 6 speed did not fix highway rpm. 6th gear in a six speed is basically the same ratio as 5th on the 5 speed. The 6 speed essentially just has shorter gearing and is a little stronger.

For the clutch sensor thing CEL. Thats the starter clutch activator thing, it goes out but does not affect the driving, or even the starting. I have the same thing

I've had 2. The first was a 93 I dailyed for 4 years, and now I have a 96 for the weekend. Every time I get in, I think I really remember it being bigger in here they are, and no camera will do it justice TINY. If you are over 5'9" get ready for tall person mods like cutting out seat foam. Also you left knee sits on the door panel and your right knee on the console. At 70mph you can feel when the A/C kicks on. All that said they are like a go kart all vibes no go

My 2003 is my back daily driver to my Scion xb and let me tell you it is amazing and fun. The thing that sucks is the highway drives and the it always torrential downpour or blazing hot and humid weather here sucks.
I’ve been daily driving my 96 (Layla) for almost 8 years now! She’s driven halfway up and down the east coast four times and once across the country with countless trips up and down New England everywhere in between. The cooling system has failed me three times resulting in two blown head gaskets and one new engine. My headlight motors are now burnt out, my seats are wearing through, speakers blown, dash cracked, windshield split, second soft top falling apart, and some turd backed into her front end hahaha. We’ve gone through a slave cylinder, a clutch, speedo cable, two heater cores, all of her stock shocks, a radiator, and plenty more I can’t think of right now lol.
Advice to anyone looking to to it? Upgrade that cooling system. That’s really all you need to make this thing a great, reliable car. And CLEAN YOUR RAIN GUTTERS. My once nearly rust free beloved is rotting through the fenders and it’s becoming an emergency situation (I regret not buying a winter beater) If you’re gonna drive it in the winter, get some sandbags in the trunk with some nice tires and you’ll survive hahaha
Layla has become a staple in so many core memories between all of my friends and I. Words can’t even do justice how close I’ve come with so many friends I’ve had in the passenger seat shooting shit and seeing new stuff together. I won’t lie, these days I’m struggling to give her the financial support she needs to stay on the road for another 8. So I’ve owned my 1990 Miata since 2016 and it’s been a weird 8 years, because the first 3-4 years of ownership it wasn’t cool to own these cars. But the last 3 years the car gets a lot of compliments and questions, and I’m over hear like oh great here we go, but nope people are stoked to see it. lol

dreamed of always having a nice little miata but tragically that dream died the first time i tried to sit in one. im not overweight but i am at 6'5" and most critically for this car i have size 15 shoes. i simply would not fit in the car even sliding my feet out from behing the pedals :( i love passing miatas and i always give the folks driving them a wave or flick my headlights at em to get em to do the pop ups. its a car i love and can appreciate from a far but can never comfortably drive or ride in myself.

My NB2 6spd gets 3500rpms at 70mph. About 30-35 MPG.

I inherited a pretty cherry totally stock 90 NA and it's ruined driving every other car for me. It really does bring a surprising amount of attention.
Only downside is the motorcycle-like lack of visibility from other drivers combined with the vulnerability of the chassis.
Also worked great to teach my wife stick too
My perfect two car garage is a Honda Fit (which I own and daily) and a Miata (which I crave). All fun, seven days a week!
Light is prolly for the upper clutch switch .(they go out a bit but easy n cheap) .. I daily a miata and have for 4 years now and love it , but ibalso bored mine over 30 thou , forged it , port n polish , custom intake oversized tb and all supporting internals , and a 4849g (g25-550) running low boost 27psi and high is at 34 ATM... o and a hood dump , so I don't get missed on road .. lol you hear me over most other cars 😅 ... but still bro Miata Is Always The Answer ... peace and love David, I hope you can get your stangs sorted out as I know you like them ... keep it rad brotha , stay safe , and build on ... l8r all ... ps you should totally go to MATG 2024 from Aug 1-4 💪🏽🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽🏎🔥🤪

miatas are great. love mine. daily drove plus delivery for about a year and a half.
The NC miata with a 6 speed is the same on the highway at 4000 rpm, I solved the problem with some sound deataning and a helmholtz resonator.

I've driven mine up and down the east coast twice. It's hellish but it's not too bad
Sometimes I try to blend in as a miata in my first gen RX-7. It's almost like the miata predecessor in a lot of ways. I will say, I was not at all ready for how big the pop-ups look from the inside of an NA, they appear vastly smaller on the first gen. Both great cars, but the miata definitely feels a lot more modern (and I guess at 17 years newer it should be).
Anywho, I daily drove my SA for about seven years and know exactly how you feel on the highway, but try adding an old worn out steering box with an inch of play to the mix and then try to enjoy some fast, long, straight roads (it certainly keeps your arms awake)... Around town and backroads are really where it's at home.

Where I live, after I saw other Miatas, they made sarcastic expressions at me.
After that happening a few times, I don't even give other Miatas a look.
And now I don't own one. Would still get one when I can.

I honestly got more compliments on drivingba miata and my old r53 mini than I have gotten driving my camaro the community around miatas is almost a cult but a very kind cult. I just bought me second miata to race vintage cars and I'm welding in a 1 inch drop plate to mount my seat. I'm around 6'4" tall and barely fit in the car but they are to much fun.
absolutely loved my mom's NA miata. Was first or second year, didn't even come with air bags lmao. should have bought it off her, biggest regret
I've been daily driving an ND since the end of 2015. Great cars even if they're slowish.
I have one (NZDM red 96 manual hard top with no airbags, abs, ac) and I don't love it anymore. Hasn't been reliable over the 9 years but was fun to drive in the hills to beaches on good days. Good memories but want it gone.
i daily drive my NB miata and never have an issue i owned a R34 GTT for awhile and that thing SUUCKED through fuel i was filling up/breaking parts more then i was having fun xD the miata owned for over a year now and 0 issues the engine light is on.. but its fine just a code gotta clear , i have a subaru wagon but i hardly use it only when i need to fit more passengers in , miata is ALWAYS THE ANSWER 100% i want a ND at some point and widebody it they look nice and aggressive / miata and civic are the best cars ive owned or the most fun and reliable ones
I’ve been daily driving Miata’s for the past 7 years 😂 As a guy who’s 5’4 on a good day, these feel regular to me! I swap between two Miata’s and both of them are bagged. At this point idk what a regular car feels like anymore
once went to CostCo with my Miata and forgot when i was in there. came out and had to put my best Tetris hat on.
Also the one good thing about not being tall.
Im a delsol guy. That targa makes it easier for me to get in and out of.
Been daily driven my nb1 miata for 6 years if its just u most the time its perfect reliable too got mine at 132k and just past 276 k today.kids will love it ppl think its a super sometimes for some reason ppl tend to also merge into like youre not there so yeah fun and mine is auto too womp womp but still fun
Dave, this may be a longshot, but I live a few hours from Atlanta. Is there a good Honda builder/tuner there you would recommend? Also, would like to hear suggestions from other local Honda owners too.
