We asked Bob Hall, the inventor of the Mazda Miata, to break down some of the weirdest concept cars that never made it to production.
Huge thanks to our expert, Bob Hall, for joining us on this video.
Real Mechanic Stuff is a channel from your pals at Donut! We feature all kinds of automotive experts, every week.

I was NOT expecting Bob to whip out the Japanese on a whim like that lol
Man spent a while in Japan. He's a real person of culture. 🤌
He talked about going to highschool in Japan earlier in the video, he worked for Mazda IN JAPAN for years, and he's still a staple of the Japanese car scene. Did you really think he wasn't at least somewhat fluent 😂
I don't know why that's a surprise to anyone, he's clearly a smart man and immersed himself in Japanese culture.
Nihongo jouzu!
And knows the GTA 4 car reference lol Bob is great.
Me : "Gosh, can Bob be cooler ?"
Bob : *is fluent in japanese*...
You thought the guy designed cars for Mazda in Japan without speaking the language?
That was actually sick, did *not* see that coming! 😄
@@norwegiantechnolover He did say he went to high school in Japan, and was considered a traitor cuz he went to Mazda when his classmates went to Toyota.

Bob never ceases to amaze me, I hope I am that vibrant, accomplished and funny when I reach his age
Nothing but blessings and a long life Bob-Sama ❤
Please make Bob a regular guest. He brings such a fun atmosphere and I love his take on pretty much anything at this point so far.
Yea, I really do love Bob, it would be cool to see more on here more! ^^
Seeing a person that had such an impact in car industry making jokes is one if the coolest things on RUclips.
You can tell Bob really likes convertibles based on his choice of hairstyle 😎 Love you, Bob
That was rude. Suck it, you twerp. Imma be bald in no time and was always luscious af. 2/3 guys by 35. 💁🏿♀️ that was legit hilarious though! 🤘🤘 #comedyisfairgame #becreative #liveafunlife and #dontbeanasshole #43ver
Do convertibles make you go bald 😂?
@@jamesmcgiffin8782 as someone who's been in a convertible, you either need to be balding or have your hair pulled back with ballerina levels of gel for that shit to stay out of your face so you can see
@@elliottlupin I actually have one too and yea that is true but headbands and glasses help
Guys, I thought the joke is that his hairstyle is a convertible... y'know, no top?
Just one word. Bob. Casually referencing vidya, building iconic cars, fluent in a VERY different language. Just Bob doing Bob things.
Bob went to school and grew up in japan and was hired by Mazda in japan (all info given in this video) ........... Honestly I would be more shocked if he didn't speak perfect Japanese
The bulldog walked so the cybertruck could stumble and fall down the stairs
LOL!
i just spit my tea all over my screen, bravo
does make you wonder if the cybertruck designer maybe saw a picture of the bulldog while high with elmo and thought "this what you want but a truck, right?'
GOOD ONE LMAO
and then get stuck in the kitty litter box...
I would love to see Bob's take on video game cars from GTA, Cyberpunk, etc...
This to the top
most gta cars are just knock-offs of existing cars (costs way less if you don't have to pay a license and kind of feels the satirical feel of the GTA worlds), so I don't think that one would be very interesting ... but there are some other cool video game cars with more original designs (like Cyberpunk that you mention), true! As a kid I really liked the Spyhunter car :)
Bob needs a own show. This guy is one of the most entertaining people on YT I've seen.
Bob is a savage treasure. It's been a hot minute since I have heard someone call something an NFW project, however I do use the phrase "The answer to a question that nobody asked" on an almost daily basis.

Bugatti has a W16, not V16
@@xahlier go google about new Bugatti Tourbillon
@@xahlierGoogle bugatti tourbillon
@@xahlier The new Bugatti Tourbillon has an naturally aspirated V16 engine qith electric power that make 1800hp
"There's really no way you can make a V16 right now..."
Bugatti/Cosworth: Hold my crankshaft.
It's wild that the Cadillac Sixteen made 1000hp... 20 years later Bugatti comes out with a V16 with all the advancements of 20 years.... Making 1000hp. I know, emissions, plus the Sixteen would likely have made less HP in production, but still....
@@deansmits006 the caddy was 13.6L V16. No doubt it was bored to 1000HP. Caddy has history with them. The Bugatti is N/A but still only 8.3L. One is a high strung 1000HP speed monster. One is a low slung, long comfortable car with probably the full 1000HP and likely a LOT more torque.
I wonder how much the at the time still in development Veyron was a motivation for this. They obviously went W16 with Turbos instead of V16 and naturally aspirated, but Volkswagen has been making a huge fuzz about it for years at that point.
@@Forke13 it was the Rimac CEO that when merged with Bugatti he wanted something different and more worthy of a Bugatti title. The Veyron was. The ones in between not really. The Tourbillion? Absolutely.
Jimmy: There’s no way you could build a V16 right now
Cosworth & Bugatti: Hold our beers
I suppose it makes complete sense but I didnt expect Bob to be so fluent in Japenese haha
I think one of the coolest things about the Cadillac Sixteen was that the engineers designed it to drop to eight cylinders under moderate load and four cylinder under light load. Power when you need it, fuel efficiency when you don't.
That didn’t work out with so many cars bro the Honda VCM was such an issue that most people opted for a workaround half the time the cylinders wouldn’t be working didn’t know what to do Cadillac also had this issue on old 80s 70s cars.
@@BayAreaMike99 And yet, this is something that newer Aston Martins, newer Dodge Charger/Challengers, and other have done successfully. Cylinder deactivation may have been a problem in the past, but those problems have been worked out because it was a technology worth spending that money developing.
Cylinder deactivation is rarely a good idea. You’re still dragging the dead weight of the pistons around. It works on ships where you deactivate entire engines, but it’s not really efficient to have sleeping pistons flopping around using up energy.
@@Ashfielder it's not that bad if the engine has more tolerance for less friction and lighter weight synthetic oils like the modern engines. It's still dead weight though. It's still great tech for fuel efficiency just like turbo charged with a eco tune. Compared to a supercharger with a eco tune. Ones obviously still better and worth developing money into.
Cadillac built engines with cylinder deactivation way back in the early 80's with the V8-6-4 engine. Obviously they quickly dropped the idea after the electronics were unreliable
Bob personality is exaclty like the personaly I see in a miata
"There's no way you could make a V16 today".......Bugatti. "Hold my birra"
I am SO glad yall got Bob Hall back!

Bob is a national.. heck, international treasure, and must be protected at all costs. More Bob please 🙏🏻

One concept car that I thought was rad and never got the attention it deserved was the Chevrolet Code 130R.
I am with you on that! I wanna rattle the cages at Donut so something can be done on the 130R and a few more that unfairly slipped between the cracks. Though as regards the 130R I have a pretty strong idea why it evaporated.

The Pontiac Stinger was a fave of mine back when it was shown, still is actually. The 4 cyl was actually an Iron Duke bored out to 3.0l and had the time I had Chevy Citation with the production 2.5l version that my mom had passed down to me when she bought an 88 Chevy Nova

tf? that demon looked great
Design aesthetic wise, the grill is too big and the headlights are awkwardly placed. It has some pretty good qualities but the questionable choices are what gives it uncanny valley reception.
All I see is a nissan z I. The front. And I like the z so I find this look fine. They immediately started praising the sf r and I think that looked like a small fish...😅
