Thanks for sharing the list of things to check.
Thanks for this video Phil. Very informative and glad to see this is a really standard outboard with electric on top. FYI that is an anti-ventilation plate rather than a cavitation plate. I’m thinking about adding the EP9.9 as a kicker to a cabin cruiser after struggling with Caroute’s 48V trolling motor.
Nicely done Phil. I hope you get around to some performance numbers soon. I'm also curious to hear what you think of the noise levels. Have a great summer!
looks like a lot of work to lower the new motor. are the fins hanging down at the back for steering ? lots of drag from anything in water and sides of hulls. should add reversing strips each side of V hulls to direct water from running up sides. hope to see some new pics soon. any idea of speed and amp draw.
Lots going on. I did lower the motor 3 " using a home made jack plate. Now that the water pump issue is fixed I am now going to raise it again.
mud wasp's seem to like those tubes on my outboards. good you seen that before you burnt up motor. first pics of it running looked like its deep enough in water? does it reverse motor for reverse or have a gear shifter? water pumps for ice motors are made to only run in one direction
There is no gear shifter in the housing so it would reverse the motor. I will watch out for mud wasps. I have lowered it by 3" and will try that. I can always move it up.
I've had wasps plug my tell tail hose with mud.
Stick a small screw in it during storage - put a red flag on it so you remember to remove it
I am looking for a Yamaha water pump replacement kit for an Elko 14. Any idea the part number?
THanks.
Mine is an Elco 20 so a bigger motor. I would contact Elco them selves and ask if their is a replacement part standard to Yamaha. I am sure they will tell you.
Another problem solved, good work. I am curious about the design of the ELCO outboard though. Does it rely on water for some of its lubrication? Is it safe to run it while dry? Or is the pump just to prevent water from rising in the housing and keeping it away from the electrical motor head and electronics? Is there a filter to prevent particles from being sucked in and into the gears?
You can run it dry and they had me do that for one of the tests. The water is just for over heating. The housing is an older Yamaha design and there are no filters in the intake just small holes. There is some sort of heat overload trip mechanism that will protect the motor if over heated. The water actually circulates up into the top of the motor where I had disconnected the one hose.
@@philboyer2036 So its used for cooling. Thanks, it make more sense to me now.
I would think you still have a problem. I'm sure the company could watch the video. I'm thinking there should be a prominate water stream and not a simi-trickle.
I sent the video to Elco a week ago before I went public. No response. I will monitor for the stream and make sure it is a strong one. When testing in a barrel I only had the motor turning at a slow pace.
just the lower unit running forward in water will feed the water pump enough water .
That may be true but somehow the impellor has to get primed. I will try a little lower and then creep it up.
