  • In a groundbreaking move, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that American XL Bully dogs will be banned 'by the end of the year' following the latest dog attack which saw a man die. This marks the fifth breed to be banned since the introduction of the Dangerous Dogs Act. However, questions remain - how will the ban be implemented? What’s the impact on dog owners? We’re joined by proud XL Bully owner Chris Halls, Linda Cantle from the Wood Green Animal Charity, and dog trainer Stan Rawlinson to discuss.

    People endlessly debate whether these breeds are dangerous but I’ve never heard anyone talking about banning border collies or labradors. If it keeps coming up, doesn’t that tell you something in and of itself. There a many many stories of pit bull type dogs attacking children or random strangers and causing very serious harm. How many dogs have you owned? Any person can say that with confidence doesn't fully understand. The reputation of staffy breeds are inconsistent. There are many many many staffies that are kind and loving. Not a bad bone in their body. And I can say that confidently because my family has a long history of having staffies. I have grown up around them and they were all the sweetest of animals. I can say that because I was with them. They were, in fact. The sweetest dogs I'll ever know.
      But it's too easy for anyone to say I'm lying because they don't know these dogs when I do. Yes, there are many irresponsible owners out there that claim their dogs are good when in reality they aren't entirely. And it paints a bad picture on all dogs who are said to be good. It's like the police. The police are good, hard working, kind and funny but when one police officer is dodgy, then to the public, ALL police officers are dodgy and it's not fair on the others who are good to have a reputation of being bad because of someone else's wrong-doings.
      And that's what has happened here. This publicised incident is indeed awful, but no trained dog would ever do such a thing. Or if the dog is indeed aggressive, then the proper precautions have not been practiced by the owner and thus they are liable. Not the dog.

    MAKE BREEDERS ACCUNTABLE. All breders to be licenced and only if they meet certain criteria . Breeding dogs must have all health tests, breeding dogs have to pass a temperment assessment, breeders must scrutinize potential puppy buyers to be sure they go to the right homes ., breedrrs must take back any dog they bred if the owner can no longer keep it . puppies to be microchiped to the breeder for life and if a dog they bred causes injury to a parson to have their breeding licence removed . Lets get rid of people who breed for profit, people who sale puppys to anyone with the cash and take no responsibility for the dogs they bred after they go to new homes nor care where they go. Fix the problem at the route. the place where the puppy is brought in to the world. And also lets put a cap on the price of puppies with £1000 being the most you can charge for a dog stop people getting rich off the back of breeding

    To put it in perspective...
    An XL Bully can quite easily kill a Caracal or a Serval cat. Perhaps even multiple at the same time.
    And Caracals & Servals require a Dangerous Wild Animals License to own, the same licence which covers owning a Tiger or a Lion.
    Domesticated dogs might not be wild, but I think the danger factor should count for more than the "wild" factor, especially when Caracal & Serval pets would be Captive Bred.
    So perhaps a simple ban is great for keeping Bullies out of the hands of irresponsible owners (the majority of XL owners), but a Dangerous Animals License, would be great for Breeders because it allows them to further work on taming & socialising the breed, working out the old fighter genes.
    Whilst also de-incentivising irresponsible breeders, from using the XL bully as nothing more than a cash cow. Which unfortunately is the vast majority of XL breeders.

    It's not the owner, it's the dog, who randomly mauls a toddler. The dog DOES have a mind of it's own.
    A dog attacks because it WANTS to, not because it is being controlled externally by the owner. There is no remote with a button being pressed that causes a dog to randomly attack. Dogs are predators, and they have instincts and desires to attack. They may in fact attack for a whole number of reasons. But the only one they need is that they feel like biting. Dogs can't reason. That makes them very dangerous, and more so than a gun or knife, or anything which actually CAN be a tool for an owner.
    Not that dogs can't be used as weapons as well. Their natural ferocity makes them ideal for that too. But they don't need to be coerced into attacking, it's in their nature.

We would see a massive decrease in these monster muscle dogs, decrease in attacks, and it would make sure that anyone who buys a big dog is dedicated to owning a big dog and training them. Even if this is implemented XL bullies should still be destroyed as they are pure breed killers.

    My dog is very socialized, trained, and super friendly.
    Do I trust her, NO. Always ask people not to touch her without my permission, do they listen, NO. So many times strangers pet her while I do something or do it right away without asking.
    Also I get frustrated when a small dog's owners don't pay attention when their dogs show aggression to my dog because they think what those small dogs can't do nothing to this big girl, but they biting her.

    Our XL Bully is never without a leash in public. He's just a 5-month old puppy now, but will grow to about 60kg. He has played with children since day 1 when we got him. He has been in conventions and festivals where a lot of strangers come to pet him, and he meets a lot of new dogs etc... MY sister's kids always throw ball to him, and take the ball from his mouth, and take a bone from his mouth and he's never shown any aggression towards anyone. The Kennel made us write a 5-page agreement before they allowed us to buy that puppy. We had to video-tape our home and introduce us and tell about our basic life, work, hobbies etc... so that they know in what kind of family they let one of their puppies. And the kennel still holds rights to take this dog away from us, if we appear to be an un-fit family for him. IF we teach aggressive things or if they a sense that we like to keep it as an "ego-extention", they can take him back. You have to have a stable job, active hobbies so the dog walks/runs/plays a lot. Enough free time to educate him, challenge the brain... Stable life, wake up at the same time (except weekends), same feeding times, go to bed at the same time etc... This Kennel was very strict of who they give their puppies. And we got one.
    If a dog is an idiot, look at the other end of the leash for the reason...

    An XL Bully is not a recognised breed in the UK. It will go down as breed type as the other 4 banned breeds. The only one of which really gets it in the neck is the APBT. And a lot of breeds look very VERY similar. Yes these dogs can be the most amazing and affectionate and the perfect family pet but breed trends have caused harm and will continue to. People need to stop buying dogs because they think they look good. And people need to stop breeding so irresponsibly for a profit. There are more dogs in the UK now than there ever has been. And WAY more behavioural problems. It starts with bad breeding (problematic behaviour in the parents, stressed mum during pregnancy, leading to issues in the pups) and then people buy these dogs not knowing how difficult it can be to own a dog especially those that are big and strong (and potentially with issues already due to irresponsible breeding!) then suddenly they have a dog they can’t control and the blame is placed on the dog. Dogs didn’t choose this. These overbred brachycephalic dogs, and other health issue ridden dogs don’t deserve what they are put through. I love every dog breed but I don’t trust the hands that they are handed to. Breed bans do f*ck all. Stick massive sanctions on breeders, bring back licensing for all dogs and especially larger more “dangerous” breeds. These dogs suffer enough, we need to stop making them so accessible to everyone. They didn’t choose this life yet so many think they are entitled to own a dog they know nothing about/aren’t prepared to work with.

  • @LyndaCoulson64
    @LyndaCoulson64 11 месяцев назад +1

    It is a mixture of all three, I agree. The thing is about mix bred dogs is they all carry a dominat gene and it's up to the breeder what they are breeding regarding their dogs being bred. It's also up to the dog owner and how they raise their dog from about 9 weeks. All dogs can turn into dangerous dogs if being raised incorrectly, causing the dog to become unbalanced. I think that if a person has never grown up with dogs around, never owned a dog themselves before, should do their RESEARCH into what characters do they want their gog to have. Research that breeds history and what it is bred for usually. Watch documentaries, read books and go to watch the dogs in action. The history of a 'dog' dates back to prehistoric times and when man domesticated them, they wanted certain breeds for certain jobs. SO they were bred for those purposes, now when you have mixed breed dogs, the dominant gene is what defines the most prominant characteristics in that type of mixed bred dogs.

"The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is the only formal breed with the term "pit bull" in its name, there are four breeds that are commonly included in the modern pitbull-type category - the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Bully". I know, and know of a lot of people who own them, and they have had no problem with them, they are strictly just part of the family. Most dog bites in my state are from small breed dogs, like the one we adopted, who has bitten me twice and my husband once. She is cool now, just PTS. The last mauling in our state was from a group of 4 Great Danes. Unfortunately, the poor boy died. He was being paid to feed them. This was definitely unusual for that breed. Maybe, it would be best for the breed and the people in the UK to just ban the dogs, and make people more responsible.

      If you want to ban the breed and ban the gun, fine. If you don't want to ban the breed and not ban the gun, also fine.
      It's the "X is dangerous but it should be allowed, but punish bad owners of X", the inconsistency

    I’ve met one and honestly he was sweet as a puppy and was the happiest thing I’ve ever seen, personally I believe that it’s the owners and not entirely the dogs fault but again I can see why many people would be nervous but the ultimate question would be
    What do we do with them now? We can either relocate them which would be emotionally stressful for the dogs or put them down which i doubt that the animal rights activists would agree with along with the vegan, but again I can see the appeal the same reasons why people want a German shepherd or even a rotwiler simply because they’re unique And if trained correctly could be the most lovable bundle of fuzz with four legs, that being said that yes they do have an aggressive personality, but with proper training, socialization with others and other animals would help reduce the amount of aggression within the dog, although personally Id simply suggest getting a pet rat

    I am only surprised it has not been banned already. How many children and people need to be attacked or dead before changes are made?

    These bully breed dogs are so loving and loyal dogs. It's bad ownership and media that has made them look so bad!. Every video I seen recently of a dog attack show me it's not even an American bully dog so why is there a ban!. Get your fax right before you you start baning. This country needs to wake up and deal with problems probably!!!

    Ban = whoever owns one goes to jail or gets fined. Dangerous animals are to be put down immediately.

    There should be laws keeping dogs on leads within society. They foul spaces, kill wildlife when theyre out of their owner's sight and control. My little yorkies have both been bitten while on their leads by loose running dogs, one incudent was near fatal and the owner wasnt even sorry. My son was almost attacked in our yard last week by a big loose dog jumping into our yard (lower walls are mansatory where we live) the owner said it was my fault that my disabled son was making strange sounds. People seem to think they have control, but really they do not.

    It’s a hard one because they can be lovely but anything that poses such a large threat to society should definitely not be allowed to be owned , Most of the time the owners are getting walked by the dog instead of the other way round , This is a clear indicator that if the dogs flips the owners are in no way shape or form fit to control them , We cannot blame all owners of these dogs either just like people you get good and bad dogs ! , Sometimes the dogs themselves are just problematic and have perfectly respectable decent owners

    Banning a dog because of irresponsible owners is ridiculous. I was going to get a Belgian malinois until I did research and learned that with working dogs you need to do just as much training as you do walking. So many idiots and scumbags get this dog to try look cool and barely walk them let alone train them. Instead of banning a bread why not try put courses and licensing in place. Most dogs can be transformed after 6 weeks of training with the correct trainer

    TBF it's probably 70% of people that have the dogs are irresponsible and the other 30% are probably great family pet's that live in a family

    I like Chris and the way he thinks and works. Well done, and good for the breeds 👍🏻these dogs are not for everyone, and that’s OK. He knows the breeds he works and lives with, and that’s what’s most important. There should be a control mechanism for people who want to own them.

    That dog expert said something very interesting, he said these dogs hv something called gameness in em, he forgot to add the fact that it was us humans that bred the gameness in them dogs, it’s the owners who r at fault not the breed

    This is so wrong !! You cannot single out one breed when there are many other dogs well capable of the same act , no dog is born a killer , this is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe put a ban on the type of people who have these dogs . We need better pet ownership

    • @KnoneOfficial
      @KnoneOfficial 11 месяцев назад

      Actually every dog is born a killer. Dogs are predatory carnivores. What do you think they'd be eating if no one housed them and fed them artificial doggy chow?

    • @KnoneOfficial
      @KnoneOfficial 11 месяцев назад

      Better ownership? Here's an analogy:
      It's not the gun, but the gun-owner, who targets people with it. The gun *DOES NOT* have a mind of its own. By contrast:
      It's not the owner, it's the dog, who randomly mauls a toddler. The dog *DOES* have a mind of it's own.
      A dog attacks because it WANTS to, not because it is being controlled externally by the owner. There is no remote with a button being pressed that causes a dog to randomly attack. Dogs are predators, and they have instincts and desires to attack.
