Great video. I like that you didn't overdub with music so you can actually hear the squeaks, scrapes and grunts that you get when 4 wheel driving. And that's a nicely setup Disco. I'm looking at getting a D2 and found a nice clean, well looked after '03 4.0 V8 with 150+Ks on the clock. Mainly because it's cheaper than a TD5 with similar Ks. How do you find the V8? stevjosco Thanks for the nice comments.. My brakes were very squeaky as I had put new brake pads in before the trip and they were not worn in yet.. A lot of vehicles have rubber bushes fail due to the bad roads so make sure they are in good shape before the trip and keep your tyre pressure at 25-30 psi to help limit vibration. The only part that failed on my disco was the rear tail shaft rubber donut but I always carry a spare one and its an easy fix. I would install a breather kit also as there is a lot of water crossings. I took 40 litres of spare fuel but only needed 20 litres just make sure you top up your tank when ever you can, also I would recommend taking 4-5 bottles of octane booster as there is no premium fuel in the cape. I didn't find the old telegraph track very challenging , the hardest part was the palm creek crossing were I had to use the winch but if you get through there you will make it the rest of the tele no problems..
Thanks! I have a spare donut so will be sure to take it. The fuel consumption is the biggest concern - will top up wherever possible for sure! The bushes seem to be fine, apart from my Watts linkage clonking :-) Nothing cracked or worn on the major components. My car will run on 91 unleaded, only a little less power, and hates cold acceleration (fine once warmed up) but octane booster could help just run smoother and less stressed. For the breathers, the stock breather tubes by LR not sufficient? the front goes to just under the windscreen scuttle, and the rear goes up behind a rear light from what I recall.
The standard land rover breathers are fine just make sure they are all connected properly, There is a breather line on the transfer case and gearbox as well as the axles.. Also I highly recommend you get a couple of pre filters for your snorkel head as the dust will clog your air filter for sure.. My main air filter was like new after the trip but the other vehicles I traveled with filters were full of red dirt..
Pretty sure it's a TD5. If so no coil pack. I've had mine deeper than that. The computer in the battery box seems to survive OK, but I pack the terminal blocks with rubber grease. Seems to work. But really it's all about the bow wave.
even on the TD5, the flexible air filter tubing from the fender to airbox sucks in water. you need to silicon tape it and also apply more gue to matting surface against the fender. also the airbox has "1 way" breather valve. however it needs clip on it when it's under water it tends to suck water from there as well. you end up getting a wet filter cartridge. really only happens when water is over the bonnet

Did you ever get that Discovery? The v8’s are very thirsty. The td5’s are the ones to go for. Mines been remapped and it flies. And gives 30mpg. Dirt cheap to maintain if you do the work yourself. Common gremlins: fuel pump, fuel filter housing, fuel pressure regulator, waste gate regulator, injector looms, injector O rings, maf sensor. Best thing is all of these are dead easy to replace and cost less than a set of tyres!
id be way too scared to have water rushing over the bonnet in a petrol disco even with a snorkel. there's just no way id take my disco that deep even tho yours didnt seem to mind it at all
nguont Tyres are kumho road venture MT 285/75/16 (33in), rims are negative 25mm offset steel, suspension is terrafirma 3 inch 4 stage adjustable shocks, 3 inch terrafirma heavy front and heavy rear Springs. Also rear wheel arch trimming is required .
NIGHT VIEW 2015 cheers bud. Hopefully I'll get mine set up right and do the cape soon. Did you find the setup is well equipped to tackle most the tracks on your way to the tip?
My D2 made it to the cape and back easy, the only hard part for the D2 was the first creek crossing on the old telegraph track (Palmers creek) which every vehicle must winch up very steep muddy bank so make sure you have a good winch and batteries . Also before you go get a tube of dielectric grease and coat your spark plug boots and all your wiring connectors to stop water getting in but be careful not to get any on the terminals inside the connectors.. Also a well sealed snorkel is required for the cape and if you have a petrol D2 you will need to take 4 bottles of Octane boost additive as there is no premium fuel available in the cape. 20L of spare fuel as well as 20L of drinking water will be enough for the trip. Just make sure your truck is well maintained and you shouldn't have any problems, I had my rear tail shaft rubber donut fail halfway into the trip but lucky I always carry a spare and its an easy fix.
Well then a fuel water separator is a must have as theres a chance you will get bad diesel. When we got up there the local mechanic had a lot of diesel vehicles to fix, all with water in the diesel tank but If you ask some locals along the way where the bad fuel is you can probably avoid this.

The problems you have listed are all outcomes of an overheated engine... My Discovery 2 temperature gauges are not accurate, thats why I installed external temp gauge and engine guard system to warn me before any problems evolve ...
I had a TD5 for a couple of years and I'd never dream of taking one off road alone, or to go touring in one. It was the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned, but I'd like to try out a V8.
Hi Mate, I bought one TD5 brand new in 2002, and under warranty thank God it leaked 2 rear engine seals. As soon as I was out of warranty I traded it for the D3 V6 petrol. I now have 2 2002 SE V8 Disco 2's. I have had the top ends rebuilt. I own a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport exceed and driving between the two one has to appreciate how much the Discovery 2 SE was before its time. Still today it will put shame on anything you put it up against. Now the price of Diesel compared to petrol at 40 cents difference petrol is way in front on cost. Even with the new pajero I prefer the disco as my daily drive.

But what a lovely off roader but that wont get you home when these thing go completely south .
Sounds like a lack of understanding, these great engines that can easily give great service for 0ver 400,000-500,00 kms or more with regular servicing and know how. And thats in Australia's harsh climate and terrain.
The problems you have listed are all outcomes of an overheated engine... My Discovery 2 temperature gauges are not accurate, thats why I installed external temp gauge and engine guard system to warn me before any problems evolve ...
Pas terrible Toyota fait mieux en Colombie et au Pérou ☻☻
