    The Land Rover Discovery II value has sky rocketed since your review. It is going to be the new Defender without the Defender's quarks. It is the off road/SUV version of Lotus Elise S2. Purpose built vehicles for a purpose built life.

    If the brakes feel weak you probably want to change them. Mine felt the same way when I first got mine. New Akebono pads, rotors, and a fluid change and the brakes felt worlds better. No more questioning if it would stop, now the question is how much will fly through the windshield.

      Had it for 4 years and going. Still more reliable the a fn jeep. Lol. Hardly any money in repairs. Keep up on maintenance and it's better then most domestic stuff but it's made for America. This motor combo is perfect for the rig. Who's ready to boost their landys

    I bought my 03 Discovery back in 2005, it's been great. My worst failure was a water pump failure at 120k miles, also replaced the valley pan at the same time, it was leaking. I have done mods similar to what you have done. Anyone can own a Toyota. Who wants to be a sheep and follow the herd? Do your own repairs, and it doesn't cost that much to maintain. If you are going out to the middle of nowhere, you should have the skills to fix your truck, if not, stick to the parking lot camp grounds. Nice review, thanks.

      I agree! Mine has not been expensive to maintain at all. Parts are dirt cheap on Rock Auto. Just do the shuttle valve seals and the abs wiring mod where you cut the brown wire and run one to the yellow and the other to ground and the 3 Amigos pretty much dissapear for good. You can get all 4 O2 sensors from Rock Auto for cheap, as well as an aftermarket set of cats, which turned out ti be magnaflows when they came in for under $500 shipping included. I also put the rear ujpint conversion, Tom Woods HD front drive shaft, yellow yrethabe bushings, terrafirma 3 inch lift, tires, terrafirm HD steering bars, EBC green pads, EBC rotors, CDL transfer case and a few other things. Cosmetically it coukd use some work, but thats coming soon. Im going to Raptor Line it either Desert Khaki or Army Green with a White Roof and some steelies. Already have a steel rear bumper, roof rack and lights, so once I raptor line it and add a front steel winch bumper the onky thing left will be stronger axle shafts and Detroit Truetrac doffa with 4.11 gears. Hopefully ill have everything done by summer time. Had a spare engune rebuilt with ARP studs and Crower Cam but it feels weaker than the Stock 4.6 did. Wondering if it was really a 4.0 instead of 4.6 bwcause it should have more power. Pulling an empty uhaul trailer required full throttle to maintain 65 on even the tiniest inclines, and even then sometimes it couldnt even maintain 65. Its torquey but absolutely gutless on the hwy. Doesn't like going over 65 at all lol.

      Yep. My chipped TD5 is every bit as good as the V8 for power and has more torque, and it is far more reliable and economical.

      @@Agent.K. you cant much they were a shit Buick engine bought by rover that landrover used for the us market discos whereas over here we got the actually good land rovers own engines the td5 200ti and 300ti all very good diesel engines

    I have 5 seater TD5 Disco 2 2001 model and i absolutely love it. I had to do ALOT of repairs on it even changing the engine (cheaper than a new head) however right now its a work horse around my house. I looking to changing my chasis to a galvanized one soon and once this is done iam gona be all set :P

    As a Land Cruiser guy who's recently picked up a Disco II as a side project, you really hit home on the costs. The good deals on 80-series cruisers are gone. Rovers are the next in line when it comes to reasonable, classic, form-and-function off-road vehicles. Especially if you like a project that lets you get to know your rig, you can be into a Disco II gone over and tuned up for the price of a beat up 80.
    Great job on these videos. It's pretty rare that RUclips can hold my attention for an hour.

      ​@@ForgottenWaypoints Yes! That's the first one I saw. Very informative, and hits a lot of the same points that others have made, but in a nicely condensed, informative video.
      We've been kind of speculating that the 100-series is an under-rated platform and will come into it's own in the next few years... but really, it's hard to justify paying the same price as an 80 when most of the 100's coming around have high miles and IFS (not that it matters TOO much... but all other things being equal...), so it's kind of a waiting game.
      The big question we've been asking around our team is "What if we could build a Disco II into a vehicle that's reliable, durable, and reasonably cost effective?" It looks like you've done a lot of the leg work already!

      @ISG Official there is a LANDCRUISER 105 model made for Australia and the Middle East that came with the solid axle front end. In all honesty, chuck a locker on the front of a 100 series and you’re sweet. Here in New Zealand, we run thousands of 80’s and 100 as well as the 105’s. Some of the owners do a solid axel swap from wrecked vehicles. (Mind you we are also a country of Hilux and Landcruiser 70 & 79 series lovers).
      Check out the Australian Cruiser forums as well as the NEW Zealand ones. All your build questions and answers will be on there.

      @@Crashryding The Aussie and NZ guys have been extremely helpful. Not only with the petrol cruisers, but our first project was a HDJ81, and it's just about impossible to find many people in the U.S. who know anything about it. You all have it made! In the U.S., they only want to sell us things that break after 100,000 miles...

    It's been quite some time since you Made this video, however I live in the uk, and yes its wet allot of the time, and the sun roofs are an issue, and so is your, I can see the head lining has collapsed, I removed the headlining, and later recovering it, but i also removed the sun roofs, they were fixed in with double sided sticky foam, that only last for 10 years, I fixed the roofs back in with windscreen adhesive, problem solved, and a fresh head lining, also less noise because ther fixed in as they should have been in the first place, I hope this is helpful and if you still have this motor, I love my 2004 version. 👍 good video by the way.

    Hello, I’m an 4x4 enthusiast and had SE7 myself among Wraglers ( 4.0 , 2.5 stick and automatic) , Cherokee’s and Grand Cherokee’s ( 4.0 , 5.2 , 5.9 ) , Ford 4x4 gas and diesel, currently have 2016 Suburban 4x4 , Samurai’s , Subaru’s ( legacy , Forester ( 5 Speed ) , crosstrek , Ml320 , Ml350 , ML430, 2003 BMW X5 3.0 and more that I’m sure I forget to mention....But ...
    When I drove 2003 3.8L Mitsubishi Montero Limited ... i fall in love instantly 😍😍😍
    3.8L only after 2003 ... V6 ... central locker ... AMAZING ! The Best Traction Control System ( MATC - Mitsubishi Advanced Traction Control - I believe only on 3.8L 2003 + Versions) I have EVER experienced!!! 7 Passenger...
    Not to mention FAMOUS SUPER SELECT TRANSFER CASE 😊
    From cons ... a little more power will be nice and as Discovery a little to long back part of the body.
    Reliable? Yes ... Never let me stranded 😍

      Yes! I started with Isuzus and moverd to a Discovery 1 (1997 SE7). I really loved the Disco but once my family got bigger and time became more precious I decided to try out Monteros/Pajeros.
      Bought a 97LS and fell in love with it. After that I bought a 96SR and wheeled it all over Colorado. I now also have a 2005 3.8L Limited and its by far the best rig yet. These trucks are unstoppable no matter what generation and none of the 3 ever left me stranded in the past 8 years. The lack of articulation is the only downside but with the diff locked and traction control I've yet to encounter any obstacle or terrain I could not navigate through ( I live in central Colorado at 9000ft elevation so I've given it plenty of opportunities). My brother has a Disco1 and a BMW X5 and he always compliments the Monteros ability to mix luxury and pure offroad prowess in such a good package.
      I do still like Discos and RRCs and would not mind owning one someday again (without the V8)

    I had a brand new 2000 Land Rover Disco II, What a great SUV really enjoyed the vehicle, But at 50,000 I reviewed the repair costs and as much as i loved Landy, I could not keep up with the repairs, the paint had huge faded areas, throwout bearing twice replaced, head gasket, the resister pack, the ABS, and Steering flailed, the rear U-joint clunked, the reliability was heading down hill, the head liner completely detached, for a vehicle of this caliber to have that much problems was (for me that is) very disappointing. However when the Landy II ran, holy cow it was the best Vehicle since sliding bread. Land Rover is still one of the best makes, if they could just make there brand more reliably the planet would be in a better place.

    Geat video! I have had four different D2's. Been driving them since 2006. Had issues with the first two but still sold them for a profit, rolled the third and finally got the hang of what to look for so the 4th one I bought in 20014bis a 2000 SE7, got it from Florida so it was spotless. I spent some money...and lots of time and curse words to replace the coils, valve cover gaskets, plugs n wires, Manifold gasket, and almost all the hoses. Fitted new air springs in the rear. Yanked the back seat out so I can fit my downhill bike inside the truck and still have the jumper seats if I want to carry four people. I live where there is snow more than half the year and I've had Audis and Subarus that are great but if you learn how to use the handbrake and have good tires, the rover can go anywhere. I still daily drive mine and am always keeping an eye out for another! (careful with the handbrake turns...learning the edge of what is possible cost me my 3rd D2...LOL)

    you can go one size bigger on a 2inch lift without cutting the arches. You can fit a 255/85r16 (which is like 33.5) and you only have to trim a small piece from the front (standard) bumper :)

    Good truck very nice I have a discovery series 1 1996 3.9 I use it daily to go to the hospital to work I love it in fb I'm like haflinger and pinzgauer from Guatemala there you can see the photos I also have a haflinger and a pinzgauer

    Excellent positive video, thank you! The liners only slip if it's overheated. Keep the cooling system in top order and it'll be fine. It's all about maintenance in the end. Check it every day.
    I have a crap 2000 TD5, had nothing but trouble with it, but still love it and still trying to make it decent. Pay top dollar and get a pampered one. Try and go cheap and you'll still end up paying top dollar!

    when talking about the brakes mine and yours are very different. if i put my foot down on the brakes it nearly pulls my face off. so id get that checked if i was you. also you should use HDC when going down loose gravel hills. it wil keep you from sliding down. even in reverse

    Re your breaking issues, these were originally designed with manual gearboxes in mind as well as Diesel engines. Thus massive engine breaking and clutch control in all ratios.

      I agree, it would be nice to have the diesel with 5spd, but alas I'm stuck with the 4.0 gasser and the auto.

    Dude you are spot on with your review and yeah I have the same issue with my brakes even with new pads and rotors. I almost wonder if there's like some noisy ridiculous pads I could get that would grip super hard like with a weird finish on them. Also I'm rolling 285 75 16 and that makes even more leverage from the tire to the hub center working against my brakes. I've had that issue on a failed climb and I did have it in neutral and it was still unable to fully stop me it was just rolling super slow I did figure out that if I pumped them a couple times it would build a little more pressure but one time I had to just put it in park and let the parking gear grab which is a terrible sound but it helped for a second while I composed myself. I had it on a trail I probably shouldn't have been on without lockers. I live in Southern Arizona so there's definitely some places that test the Disco 2 even with bigger tires. Not like the Moab rocks but like the kind of mixed with dirt and the rocks that are falling apart a big chunky spread apart pieces. It's Charleaou Gap trail in Tucson Arizona. Very challenging.
    Also you're right about the power it's funny I'm a part of a Facebook group with all these guys from the UK and they think the V8 is so powerful and I'm like gosh I need to understand what the daily drivers must be over there because something that weighs 4,800 lb with 185 horsepower running optimal is just not that great and then they talk about towing a bunch and all this stuff and I'm like wow but if someone posts a picture of like an F-250 or something they jump all over it saying it's Overkill and I'm like no it's not it just has its place so does the disco

      Hahahah, so true! I love Arizona. We did a week there down in the touristy areas of Sedona (Broken Arrow, Outlaw, Schnebly, etc) and my wife and I fell in love. I need to get out and explore more of the state!

    Nice review. Thank you for what sounds as an objective review of your Land Rover Discovery 2! (P.S. The Series II, IIA & III Land Rover 88" station wagons all had seven seats; three abreast in the front, with four individual fold-up seats in the rear compartment. Of course, with 77 HP (7:1 CR) or 81 HP (8:1 CR), these old Series Land Rovers, even in 88" wheelbase length, were quite underpowered on American highways. Still, however, I drove Land Rover 88" 2.25 liter petrol vehicles as my primary mode of transportation (even over the various Rover cars I owned) for about 30 years. As of this month, I've been driving a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon for ten years. Very interesting videos you've put out. Thanks again! Andy McKane.

      Yeah, I'm still toting around on the disco as a daily driver and loving it. I had an opportunity to pursue a series iiia to restore, but the timing wasn't right. I'm kicking myself for passing on it.

    My father had 3 discos, 1 200 TDI, and 2 300 TDI, Disco 1 in the US.
    Not a perfect car, or in other words not a reliable car as other carmakers, but a real true 4x4 and a genuine pleasure to own and drive. Fit any kind of lifestyle, a family car, a proper off-road, a workhorse (sometimes).
    The Disco 2, here the popular engine is the TD5 (Europe), a great engine with a lot of potentials to be explored. It's a torquey engine and fun to drive. I believe that was the last proper LR where the function overcame the posh style and luxury wannabe brand desires...

      Well said. I would love a TD5. I heard they aren't perfect engine either, but I don't hear as many issues with head gaskets, worn cams, and slipped liners that plague the later year Rover V8s.

      The last version of the Thor Rover V8 was the 4.6 in the D2a. It was the 4.6 had more slip liner issues.
      The 4.0 can overheat if you don’t renew the cooling system. It’s need refreshed after 8-10 years. This causes the liners to be pulled down by the pistons.
      These engines are good if you keep the cooling system inc fans tip top and keep them serviced well. The purposefully run hot to reduce emissions. Some people fitted a freelander thermostat reducing temp from 96c to 88c which makes them run horribly rich.
      I live in Queensland Australia and use my daily in super hot summers and never had an issue in 19 years.

    Looking forward to the buyers guide! Just bought my first 2004 Disco2 SE that has a new (used) refurbished engine (machined heads, new gaskets all around and new hoses, plugs and wire) and I just bought all the suspension bits (shocks, coils, hubs, ball joints, steering dampener, pan hard and steering bars, and new brake rotors/pads). So, I’m starting from a pretty good point to keep up with reliability maintenance, so I’m looking forward to your tips and thoughts. New sub!

      Congrats! That sounds like a great 2004! Like I've said in other posts, I'm going to re-shoot the buyer's guide because I wasn't happy with it. So I apologize for the delay. Hopefully I'll give you useful tips to reliably take you 2004 into 2024 and beyond!

    Here in Europe you dont see the gasoline version. We have the 200/300tdi 2.5l 4 cil for the disco 1 and the 2.5 td5 5 cil for the disco 2 coupled with a manual 5 speed r380. Both engine are very reliable.
    You can tune more the td5 because is an electronicaly controlled injection versus the bosh ve for the 300tdi but the 300tdi is better in the off road situations. I have a disco 1 300tdi with 240.000 km and i am the 5th owner. It starts right up, half a chey. They just go....

      There is starting to be a rush on Disco 2s now. I'm tempted to freshen mine up a bit more and sell it to another enthusiast.
      You are lucky on the FJZ80, nice ones are extremely rare now.

      I'd love to get my hands on one! It should be more reliable in theory. The blocks should be sturdier, no traction control, and no flex disc in the rear.

      @@on1ytheb3st , I wish I could answer, but it's all anecdotal forum posts reading for me. I've never owned one. Lots of good things like full float axles, etc. I think the hardest part nowadays is finding o e that hasn't been beat, tired, and rusted out. Maintaining it should be easier than a D2, you'd just need to find a clean one. Performance would be hampered without Atrac, but you wouldn't need a mod for center diff lock, so there is that!
      The Camel Trophy D1s got me into Land Rovers.

      @@ForgottenWaypoints See I'm not looking for something to be a king offroad but rather more formidable than my current setup which is a 2nd gen (R50) pathfinder with part time 4wd but open diffs. Also something relatively reliable for the long term but I'm completely fine with wrenching on it when need be. The only thing that scares me with the D1 which is a problem I've run into with my pathy, is the fact it uses a timing chain. Like you said, finding a mint condition D1 is getting harder and harder and I've read some stories about the timing chain, oil pump and gears along with other bits going out well under 200k.

      If it slides into gear, its good to go, sometimes it might be bound and rolling makes it easy, usually rolling helps to get out of 4 Io, but with the d2, I rarely have to roll to shift into it.

      @ForgottenWaypoints I have a 2004 with the differential lock. I found out today that it's only rear-wheel drive without it on. Is there a different version that has all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive? I would think I would only want to have a differential lock on when I'm rock crawling or something.

    Great video and great info. I've owned them for over 4 years. Look into EBC brake kits with stainless steel brake lines. My 04 would lock up all 4 wheels on the highway when i'd slam them.

      @@victorvela2223 , Yeah, I'm on the facebook group. I don't recall any hiss. I'll check it out next time I'm riding (I don't daily the Disco anymore). I've just never been impressed with the braking and any modification/maintenance would be sweet.

      I use EBC green paddles from a couple of years now on my TD5 D2 MY 2003. They make the difference, believe me.

      @@cemaxitaly i have the EBC green pads and EBC rotors amd stainless stwel extended lines and it helps alot, but the brakes don't work that great, especially under panic braking. Sometimes they're great, other times you really have to push hard to stop quick. Thinking the brake booster may be bad. My 01 disco did this too. Pedal is hard sometimes, other times they respond well.

    my 2002 v8 will do over 100 mph and it stops well I think you might need to investigate :)
    the brake problem is most probably due to larger wheel diameter, which gives the momentum weight more leverage over the breaking force

    What do you think about the 1996 Land Rover Discovery SE7? The guy says it has the 4.0 in it. 185,000 miles on it. Is there any thing I should ask him before I buy it? it has a 2 inch lift and new AT tires,roof rack,lights in front and back and rock sliders. no winch. What do you think?

    Just purchased a 2004 discovery II SE7 from auction. Pretty sure maintenance was not kept up with. Need to replace diagnostic module tank leakeage unit, as well as change multilpe circuits, and and change oils all around. Im feeling like it was a good purchase but i know a lot of work needs to be done. Any knowlege on the discovery II diagnostic tank? Can i make this car reliable again?

      I was able to fit my kids' rear seat in the middle, a small Costco booster for my oldest in one main seat and a large britax in the other.
      It was actually easier to get car seats in the disco than it was the Hummer H3, because of the stadium seating, the seats are the full width of the vehicle, rather than narrower to fit the wheel wells.
      My 1999 didn't have any of the modern cool brackets for the quick releases. I had to use the seat belts as anchor points for all seats.

    My ex wife and I bought two Discoverys the day before 9/11: mine was a 98, and hers was an 01. I felt both were very capable road trip and off-roading vehicles, but my 98 cost $$$$$ just to keep on the road. Her 01 was not as challenging, except for brakes!

      @@ForgottenWaypoints Yes, my 98 was a D1 - the last year. I was told by the salesman that BMW had bought out LR and the 1999 was the first of the BMW-engineered D2's. I had to replace the O2 sensors, brakes, sunroof, etc., several times on my D1. Hers drove better and was better engineered.

      The ultraguage is awesome, it just connects to the OBDII interface port. Since the TD5 was never a US-emissions engine, I'm not sure if there is an OBD2 port on the TD5 rigs or not? Maybe someone can answer..

    This might be too late but are you able to add the center diff lock on a 03 model with a dis1 transfer case?

      If you have a t-case out of a disco 1, then you have the CDL. All you should need is a linkage. The problem with the stock '03s is that they stopped putting the physical locker in the t-case, then you'd have to add the actual diff lock and THEN the linkage (or put in a D1 or early/late D2 t-case)
      You can google the LT230 center diff lock and see where the actual locker is, you can reach up and manually turn it with a wrench. If you don't have the nub on the t-case to turn, you don't have the locker. Looking for the nub is the easiest way to verify if you have the center diff lock or not.

I prefer to sit more upright and while I can do that in the Disco, I have to bend my head down to see under the map pockets. I wish the seats were just 1" lower. They are raised pretty high.

      8LIFGR8 4x4 yes he does recline the seat and says he looks somewhat down toward the road. The driver seat should have more of an adjustment to lower the seat for taller people. I’m 5’3 and absolutely love how raised it is lol

    I feel really sorry for you yanks having to put up with that antique V8. As lots of people have said the TD5 is light years ahead. I absolutely love my Discovery TD5, no sunroofs to leak, airbags on the rear replaced with springs and no ACE. It's our daily driver, work vehicle and, well, a member of the family. I can fix it myself. We want to fit a galvanised chassis.
    If your brakes are that bad you need to look at them.

      Yeah, I'll have to take a peek at the breaks. I mean, they stop me, but it's not aggressive. I can't see any leaks, but maybe it's time for the master cylinder. I'd love a TD5!

    I know been a while since you uploaded this but.. just a few things here.. you do realize the hill decent control also works in reverse right?.. so no need to mash the brakes.. it will do the same forward with HDC as reverse.. now as my name suggest i too was a proud owner of a D2V8 but i am in the UK and we have the TD5 which came with a 10p engine 1999 until end 2001 and 15p engine with upgraded head dowels and ECU.. mappable instead of chip but i agree with the rest you said.. they need their care.. in the UK parts are cheap as chips and boy.. you americans miss out on the TD5.. mapped straight through exhaust stage 2.. hmm V8 will lose.. but sound wise V8 rumble takes it.. i had both.. Enjoy the motor and haters don't know crap about a D2 lol

      I have an LX470 now, and the D2 is by far cheaper to maintain. In fact, my D2 is a bit neglected these days because the Toyota is the rig that's always needing TLC!

      @@JamesJohnson-ov5ct , you are correct. I have an LX470 right now (100-series land cruiser) that's supposed to chiseled from unobtainium, and it came with full records and well maintained.
      It has cost me more than my L322 and Disco 2 combined in "regular maintenance". Toyota's really aren't that cheap to maintain.
      I'm hoping to re-shoot some of my buyer's guide footage this weekend. I wasn't pleased with the audio quality and some of the camera work on the last batch. With any luck, it will be posted sooner rather than later.

      @@reynardvandergrijp2681 , with the short wheelbase, unless I was planning up-armoring it and running the rubicon, 32"s are just fine. I never did take it out on the Golden Spike, but I believe you can negotiate up to 7 rated trails without bigger tires.
      I did Poison Spider just fine, even without lockers.

    I don't understand that, the centre diff lock is what puts the vehicle in 4wd, otherwise it's simply in Awd as it would be on say, a Suburu so how could they not have one at all on the early Disco 2s?
    I had the TD5 a while back and that was, without a doubt, the most unreliable vehicle that I've ever owned. I wouldn't dream of buying another one, but I'd love to get a cheap V8 and give it a go.

      I agree, it was a HUGE mistake not having the center-diff lock available to the end-user from the factory (that added it on the 2004). Everyone else had to crawl under the rig and engage the diff-lock with a wrench on the transfer case or modify their shifter to the D1 shifter.
      Unless you had the years that the transfer case didn't have the physical diff lock, then you were out of luck.
      Land Rover must have felt that traction control was good enough and they didn't need the diff lock. In a way, they still feel that way as their terrain management does the diff-lock "automatically" and many times the end user can't shift it on their own. I don't agree with that mindset, but at least LR is supplying a diff lock, and in certain trims a rear locker as well.

      Our emission standards prevented the diesels from being imported and the fiasco of the Rover V8 in the 2000s between the P38 and Discovery 2 nearly caused the brand to exit the US market. It was bad, really bad. And Rover hasn't rebounded from that image.
      It hasn't helped that their gas engines still have major issues (Expensive timing chain replacements, etc.)
      But if you are willing to handle the risk of a slipped liner on an ol' 4.0L V8, the Discovery 2 is a very rewarding platform.

    Can’t believe how many ppl actually love these vehicles when they are complete an utter garbage compared to most other vehicles you can overland in….
    I would never take anything other than a Toyota or Lexus 100s of miles on back roads from the nearest town an than 100s more miles from that country road taking back roads into the wilderness… Let alone trusting a Land Rover lol 4 Runner or GX470 everyday

      You just explained why it's awesome (leaving the comfort life). If you off-road right, with the right vehicle, you don't tear your vehicle (or the outdoors) to bits. Save that for the youtube warriors who do dumb stuff for clicks.
      No, a real off-roader uses it to get to clean air and away from civilization. Where the music is the cacophony of singing birds and the background noise is that of a gurgling stream.
      The outdoors is where it's at. I don't understand the appeal of urban environments and high-density living. But I'm glad others enjoy it, because there isn't enough room for everyone to enjoy open spaces!
