    This video talks about a historical episode from the cold war when China almost got nuked by the US. The context of the Korean war which led to that situation as well as the details of the planned strikes and the eventual resolution are also explored.
    What if Soviets and the West had clashed in 1945? Who'd win that hypothetical World War 3?

      We didn't learn any of this shit in school, though I think it should be taught as it reminds of how close we can come to armageddon. As great a commander Macarthur was he really had no idea what he was dealing with at the time and the awful consequences it would've brought. Wars should be tought in school more often anyway. The amount of people who don't even know what the holocaust is and what horrible things the Nazis and Japanese did in those 10 years is quite sad.. And even disturbing

    Binkov had a very good point on Truman's restraint against the normalization of the use of nukes. In 1951, the US had more nukes than the Soviets. If the US had used nukes extensively against the Chinese Communists as planned by MacArthur, there would be a good chance that the Soviets could use nukes equally extensively as tactical weapons once their nuke production was fully established. Nukes were also getting ever more powerful when the US made the first hydrogen bomb in 1952, and the Soviets followed close behind to have their own hydrogen bomb in 1953. The planet might not have survived that many hydrogen bombs being used tactically. Truman's restraint had probably saved the planet.

When the first atomic bomb was tested, President Kennedy secretly instructed Taiwan to send special forces to be carried by the US Air Force to the raid test site. Unfortunately, President Kennedy was assassinated in broad daylight,
      In these days when the US president was vacant, the raid plan was shelved, and China successfully carried out the first atomic bomb device test, and a huge mushroom cloud rose up.

    Hey Binkov, love your videos.
    Stalin sent more than just planes - he sent pilots, too. The North Korean "air force" were all Soviet planes piloted by Soviet pilots. My grandfather served in the US Army in Korea, and told me whenever they came across a downed "North Korean" plane, the pilots were always Caucasian - not Korean or Chinese. He claims they never found a pilot alive after a crash, but kind of hinted that there was an understanding that a live pilot wouldn't be taken prisoner as a live pilot would cause more problems with the Soviets than an expired one.
    Granted this is hearsay from gramps, but a lot of academic research suggests this was the case, too.

    There was also a time China almost got nuked by the USSR i think in the 60s. My mom told me when she was a teenager she and everyone she knew spent a days constantly digging tunnels. This was a time when relations between China and the USSR were deteriorating, and it look like war was going to happen. The US threatened USSR to not do that or the US will fire nukes as well. Because of that, the situation cooled down. I tried looking for this story online, but couldn't find evidence that corroborates my mom's story.

      @Nick Bennett
      It wouldn't, nuking China is worst, and the event wouldn't be just Korea, but the entire world. If China was nuked, the USSR would have involved and created sanctions at the Security council. When that happens, the United Nation would collapse into two kinds of side. The west and the east. Both hated each other due to an ideological difference. If China was nuked, the USSR would most likely intervene and send its militants to support North Korea, the USSR would have used this excuse to nuke other nations which heavily criticize US foreign policy by using targeting hypocrisy. Since China is extremely big, the war will never be over until South Korea surrendered, if they did nuke, North Korea would have gain more territories due to the geography, despite the supply lines, the Soviets would have to issue it. The generals and Truman were both correct that starting an apocalypse to justify a small nation is a terrific idea. If you're invested in history, you would realize that Communism used to be popular which explains the guerillas in South Korea, this would have done similar to the Vietnam war. And what does insult exactly made the argument discussed easier? I suppose you wanted to damage my mentality.

MacArthur could have adjusted his tactics to still attack the Chinese by explaining the threat the Chinese posed to our interest. At the same time not alienating himself. I am a huge Mac fan. And I believe he was correct in his assessment of the future enemies we would face. But he did fail in the end. Not from weakness or cowardice. But from lack of imagination when it counted and offering compromise suitable to others desires. He was a great general and man but he lacked political finesse. He was enamored by the brightness of his own star and failed to identify the enemies hidden in the shadows.

      @The Nova renaissance At the time, the USSR wouldn't have been able to "nuke the US into the stone age". The Soviets successfully detonated a nuke for the first time only a few months earlier. They didn't have a large enough number of bombs and they hadn't figured out the delivery system with bombers and ICBMs haven't been conceived yet. For perspective, North Korea detonated their first nuke 16 years ago and their nuclear strike capabilities are still pathetic as a threat to the continental United States.
      In 1950, if we really stretch it and shoot the same bullethole multiple times, the Soviets theoretically may have been able to bomb the US with nuclear weapons but it was not a threat that was credible enough to change the political math. The binary condition of simply having nukes was all the USSR could rely on for political weight involving nukes.

    A comment on the use of nukes, at that time, for "tactical" purposes. In order to justify, from a use of limited resources standpoint, using a nuclear weapon, you would need a large concentration of enemy forces. That would require intel with a big lead time. Nuclear warheads at that time had to be used within a few days...a week at most...of being assembled. It took a team from 48 to 72 hours to assemble a bomb. Once assembled, you then had 3 days to use it The heat from the uranium/plutonium cores would start to melt the electronics inside the bomb after about a week. Also, the bombs at that time used a lead battery for power...the same kind as were used in cars at that time. Those batteries would only last in those bombs for about 3 days before losing power. So what a commander would need is to know that 5 to 6 days from now, the enemy will have a large sized....say several divisions at least...force at a particular place. The chance of a commander in the early 1950s getting that kind of a lead time in intel was going to be fairly small.

      @ilgamesh lol, ummm, no.
      Or at least there’s no way to really support that claim. Generally, the US had more influence on average than the USSR throughout the Cold War. It would more likely be the case that such 3rd World Nations would get behind the US, even if just begrudgingly in the hopes that they wouldn’t get nuked. Asia might have leaned more towards The Soviet Union and China, but South America and Africa would be solidly in the West’s sphere of influence
      Also, 3rd world countries uniting, pfft, lol. That’s adorable

    • @QuantumAscension1
      @QuantumAscension1 3 года назад

      @ilgamesh Fair point, though this assumes that the Soviet Union doesn't use their own nuclear weapons in some other proxy war, which they would feel more comfortable doing once the US set the precedent.

      @@hy4630 2 things about that though. Iran is more likely to use them, they will bring a nuke to a knife fight. 2nd the biggest issue with that is if they got nukes, they will probably be used even if the Iran leaders wanted them for deterrence only. They need more control over themselves 1st before they should get nukes. Russia went through something like that for a long while. The rest of the world watch them closely because even the government didn't have control over their country not for the most part. A rouge Russian nuke could have launched without the government's say so but in the end Russia would have payed for it.
