Same brother..I have/had really high hopes for this sled & engine. It’s a phenomenal concept. I hope Matt can get it dialed in and show what it’s truly capable of.
It’s a great looking sled and I think it has the right ingredients to work, but unfortunately maybe let down by the company. Early reports sound like terrible quality control & issues that should’ve been ironed out well before the sled hit the production line. This cat might not have nine lives.
@@WRCWRX I think they will get it figured out. It's a first year motor. People seem to forget the first year problems of all these sleds. The Polaris 800 motors had many reliability issues, the 840 Polaris engine had crank problems and they updated the design for 20+. Cat's ctec2 was changed in 2020 to have a different head/jug over the 18/19's. The new chassis is good, they have improved the rail and track durability a lot since 19'. I've got a relative that works at the place they assemble all the cat motors and they had tons of issues getting the test engines built as it was during covid with everything getting delayed. I actually just sold my cat and am trying out a Polaris this year, we will see how that goes. I hope all the manufactures have success, then we will as consumers. I just hope they get Matts sled back quickly as he always just shows you everything and it did look like he was starting to figure out the sled.
I think the price points, at least this year will keep sales low. Lots of quality control issues on these. Jingling noises and springs breaking left and right.
Agreed. He is not loyal to one brand. I saw a Brand Ambassador had issues, the only reason I knew about it was that a guy was riding with group who was not affliliated with the brand, he posted a video and it showed what happened to the sled. I then have been checking Ambassador's video's, not ever shown. These guys who are sponsored only have loyalty to who sponsors them.
Matt, that rattle is most likely your disc brake. Apply some brake when rattling and see if it goes away. An o-ring fixes it. If not that, it's the exhaust spring on the y-pipe rattling against the steering tube. Definitely need to put a bead of silicone on all exhaust springs on this engine. Springs are very long and will eventually break.
After watching I am again so impressed with your commitment to the industry. Your not out here bashing cat for views your here giving unbiased reviews but understanding what is best for everyone.
Good catch....yeah that would be an easy 180 on that spring to see if the rattle quits! Other wise it sounds like a starter pawl like ppl have said! 😄🍺
The rattle is the exhaust spring on the Y pipe to pipe on the can side. I doubled mine up cause that one spring is loose. Fixed it right away. I also had the same issue as you yesterday. Once you bend that bracket the sled becomes an animal since the valves start properly opening
One thing is for sure: it's a very sexy looking sled ,it's very light, and the guage is dope. Very easy to ride, but definitely got some first year problems let hope cat gets thst sorted out, the sled has huge potential
Yes, looks fun. But about the gauge. Seems like a very bad integration. Why did they not think about collecting snow there. Seems like you will only see it a few times a day.
Excited to see a Cat in the videos. Also glad to see an honest review. Every first year sled has issues, and you mountain riders pushing it to the limits and figuring out those issues is what gets those issues fixed.
I rode my new Catalyst that's exactly like yours for the first time this weekend.....along with 5 other spankin new Catalysts. I'm guessing you've figured out the noise is an exhaust spring. There's a few dumb things about the sled....the front bumper and the clutch panel tolerance off the side panel........Get her above 3 hours though and she really comes alive! Love the power and maneuverability of the sled. When you hit something hard with the track (Alpha) it reacts differently than a dual rail. Guessing you noticed that. My Cat threw a code or two that seem to go away....no issues with any of the other sleds minus the spring noise. I hope you get a good go with her. Best stock sled I've ridden thus far
You and Dawson are hilarious to watch together. Love the banter. Bummer about the sled man. I’m sure Cat will get you up and running quick. I would think they would want all the positive exposure they could get right now.

Dawson is correct. P1646 is Exhaust valve actuator self cleaning open circuit. The ECM was doing a full sweep open close calibration and the exhaust valve got stuck. Must be binding on something. I will continue watching to see if you get it fixed. I can't believe a new sleds would have these problems!
It's not surprising at all. A lot of new tech and design changes fast. They need time to workout all the little things. Same happens with side by sides atvs and even dirt bikes now
I’m amazed how everyone always forgets about the short comings of Polaris and Ski Doo of the past! Each manufacturer has had multiple set backs with new models but nobody wants to talk about that nowadays! The only reason Ski doo is still in the market is because of the Federal government bail outs of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s! Just cause you’re on the top of the heap today doesn’t mean you were always there! Thanks for your honest perspectives of the new Cat.
It’s easy to over look Skidoo and Polaris short comings considering they can actually bounce back from them unlike Cat. Every time Cat has a set back, the set back becomes their new starting line. Bombardier and Polaris can afford to scrap whatever junk they came up with and start fresh over. Cat really can’t. Cat doesn’t even nearly have the same rider base as it used to which doesn’t help anything either. I like Cat and want them to succeed for the sake of a better more competitive snowmobile market, but personally I wouldn’t touch any model year after 2011. 2000 to 2011 was the golden era of Cat and forever will be.
National defense interests always warrant a bailout here and there. All three of them have been treated the same courtesy or at least there parent companies. Militaries need atvs and snowmobiles if youre giving the money to another country importing them its kinda counter intuitive...
I knew that sound was familiar!....had the same thing happen on my old M8 a couple years back....sounded identical to this noise. Ended up needing to do the old strap around the clutch routine to get it running at one point then never shut it off after. I have a new 858 in the garage now. other annoying noise is the brake pads. They just free float in the caliper and rattle. I pulled them out and put a really tiny bead of high temp silicone on edges and for the most part eliminated that. :They should have put a spring plate either on the pads or in the caliper to keep this from happening.
The ringing could be your upper right exhaust spring against the steering post. Check for wear on the paint there. Also check your exhaust springs for missing silicone plugs.
So I’ve been a skidoo guy forever but switched to a Polaris. Never really saw cat as much of a competitor in the back country world, nor have I ever really been a cat fan. I had the “pinging” on my first ride. One Y pipe spring was missing and you could see where another was rubbing against the Y pipe. These springs are from the 800 and are stretched so tight they will be a problem till we get a better spring. I haven’t been up to retest yet. Other than that, I love this sled and it’s maneuverability and smooth throttle response! One of the best parts of your channel is the honest reviews. Can't wait to hopefully see this thing back up on the mountain and really see what you can do with it! Thanks for the great content as always. My merch order is on the way so you can draw my name.
Amazing content as always Matt! Loved that you bought the cat aswell! Unfortunate it didnt hold up for the whole day! Hope you get it fixed so we can get another shot at it climbing to the top! :)
Glad to see you on a Cat. I’ve had such good luck with my cats over the years that I’m hoping they get the bugs worked out and back into the game. First year of anything is always a gamble. Trucks, sleds, dirt bikes, quads, usually take a year or two before things get dailed in. I could see a factory 858 turbo in the future if all works out.. thanks for trying out and giving your opinion on all the manufacturers!. Gate it or love it, the manufacturers need to hear and see these issues, the sledding community is what keeps them all employed.
Way she goes, that’s snowmobiling for ya. Never cheap and sometimes there are issues. Happens to all brands. Excited to see how it goes when you get these little kinks all worked out and can put it through some proper testing! Lots of potential I think.
@@SuperCody888no its still stressful you still have to worry about getting it off the mountain, and for us guys who only get to the mountains 2-3 times a year it really sucks to have it sitting in the shop
the rattle is sounds something like something that is wobbling upon accel or decel rotating around a shaft. Once centrifugal force is enough is quiets down. So brake rotor is a good guess.
Another awesome video..I couldn't wait to see u on the new cat... I'm kinda partial to cat to bad your having troubles but I've seen you guys have trouble with all the brands ... but I appreciate your positive outlook on it... I agree we don't need to lose another manufacturer of sleds.... keep em coming..
I think you just got a lemon!! I have 170 miles on mine and did have one exhaust spring break on the ypipe. It come alive and cleans up after the stages breaking in. hope they get you running quickly at the dealer!!
That sound is the pull starter mechanism not recoiling all the way. Would bet your life on it. You can test it by pulling the handle just a touch while the sound is happening and I bet it will go away.
@@CalgaryDynastar ??? ascender chassis and ctec2 was 18, Alpha rail 19, 20 they revised the ctec2 engine design, they have updated the alpha rail and track since, catalyst chassis for 24. None of that counts? Or is it just because they don't have a fancy turbo engine?
@@Echoes- tell me you’ve never riden one without telling me. Nothing wrong with the cats. Just because they don’t change it all at once doesn’t mean it’s a problem. The Polaris from 12-21 were pretty similar. The pro to axys wasn’t a huge change. They also had like 2-3 front end geometry changes, engine iterations, etc.
Imo you cannot ride the alpha setup as you would a twin rail. It takes less body input and effort, letting the sled do more of the work, along with a slight change in technique. That track and rail combination just gets so much traction. That if you give it full pin, say in a sidehill scenario, it just blows all the snow out from underneath you so quickly in certain situations. Its just going to take some rides to get used too. Personally i think they can be ridden slower thru the terrain. I also dont think that low snow conditions log hopping is one of its strengths. Its really more purposely setup than any other sled for deep loose snow and searching for traction. Slick logs with a track thats constantly conforming gonna be like a slip and slide. Definitely y pipe spring hitting the steering post. Powervalve cable out of proper adjustment. Fyi those are air shocks so you set the air pressure properly and then use your atac/iqs to adjust compression. The rear also has lockout feature, and i believe can be set on the fly
BLOWS MY MIND!!! How 4 or 5 buddies can identify a known problem in minutes but an entire company can’t figure it out before making themselves look less than desirable. Do the Owners, builders and technicians not ride their own products or is everyone at Arctic Cat Skidoo ppl.😂😂😂😂 Hire these guys to test your sleds and I say that to all sled companies. Great video🎉
I’ve been throwing the same code since day 1. Ended up bending the power valve bracket because it was binding pretty bad. After I fixed it, it worked good for a bit, but it just threw that same code again yesterday, even after adjusting that bracket.. hmmm
And that is why i ride a yamha apex with 300hp. can't beat the power can't beat the reliability can't actually beat anything expect weight. but i compensate that with a 1:1 weight to power ratio. sad that yamaha quit but it was expected. and to be honest arctic cat will be the second company to go down. we will probably only have BRP and maybe polaris 10 years from now.
My 2019 Alpha does that same jingle when coming down to idle sometimes. I think it’s an exhaust spring or the recoil. I can reproduce the sound if I pull a little on my starter rope while the sled is running. And also… Now you got me real hooked for this season 💪🏼
I miss the 90's when we had more than 3 manufacturers to choose from for good properly working sleds for way less money, today they charge you for a car but give you a damn beta test product.
So happy you are giving CAT 858 a good college try LOL! hope they can repair the 858 soon! catalyst chassis seems to be working great! seems to get good traction too!
Congrats on the new sled! I have one just like it... fwiw mine hasn't shown exhaust valve problems yet, BUT I haven't ridden it very hard either. I'm in even worse shape than you were on your first ride. I'm going to have the local dealer look at my exhaust valves next week before we get more snow. FWIW I think it'll be great having you on one because that way the world will know about problems and Cat can get it together and fix them.
8:59 thats a good friend right there lets pop the hood off again and check it out, same guy i bet that said its going to be good when you first removed the hood. Hes a good friend.
Man I really want Cat to pull it together. I’ve always liked the looks of their sleds and this one looks so good, but the one guy in our group with a cat was always the guy getting towed out or missing days so it always kept me on Doo mine never let me down.
You should come to the Michigan upper peninsula grand marais to snowmobile we have a cabin you can stay in I would love to make a video with you I’m 12 and I am addicted to snowmobiling I also post snowmobiling content we have 3 and half feet of snow right now we have more then most places and it would be my dream to make some RUclips videos with you ❤
For the ticking noise, check your pull start, i had a sled do the same thing come to find out the starter pin use to pop out n hit the start cup and make that ticking noise
honestly this kind of honest assessment is so nice and unfortunately not the industry norm. Hopefully Cat/Textron can make improvements and stay in the game.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Polaris, but the last few years I have been on the last run of M8000 and ski-doo gen4. In my opinion, the chassis of the Polaris has got to be the best, but the M8000 and gen4 motors have been dang near bullet proof for me. I can’t count how many Polaris sleds I’ve pulled off the mountain in the last two years with blown top ends. I hope Arctic cat can get the sled figured out because I think it will be a killer!
The noise your hearing is the exhaust springs every one does it, we put high temp silicone on the springs. They hot on the steering shaft from all the vibration and will break together
I also own one Matt. Jingling sounds like the exhaust spring on steering post. I think most have had to bend that power valve bracket and also apply some loc tight to the power valve cable / power valve leaver bolt.
I was literally saying the other day to my dad it would be cool if Matt got the arctic cat to compare to his others next video got the 858 that’s awesome!
I see the Connors drilling sticker in the start of the video. Worked for them right before they sold off. Currently an underground miner in Elko Nevada. Rocking the 2021 sidewinder
I totally agree with you on buying first platform anything. Whether it be a phone ,vehicle or anything. Having said that, im not very impressed with the "newer" polaris redesigns either. Why put a weaker bolt in a clutch that takes most of the hp from the motor. Or redesign the fuel pump on a ski doo when the previous one performed perfectly for many years. Keep up the goodness Matt. Look fwd to a great season for you. God bless

One of the best parts of your channel is the honest reviews. Can't wait to hopefully see this thing back up on the mountain and really see what you can do with it! Thanks for the great content as always. My merch order is on the way so you can draw my name.
It’s one of the pipe springs on the steering post, have to get tighter springs or rtv them.
Amazing content as always Matt! Loved that you bought the cat aswell! Unfortunate it didnt hold up for the whole day! Hope you get it fixed so we can get another shot at it climbing to the top! :)
Don’t give up on it yet lol. So happy you got a cat. Rooting for the underdog.
FINALLY a cat in the lineup haha I’ve been waiting for this day!
Because it’s junk 😂
Damn this fella can ride , awesome break in on that motor! Pro throttle response to the conditions as well. Great vid
I’m excited to see you rip this sled
Way she goes, that’s snowmobiling for ya. Never cheap and sometimes there are issues. Happens to all brands. Excited to see how it goes when you get these little kinks all worked out and can put it through some proper testing! Lots of potential I think.
When a sled makes noises, it’s the most stressful thing lol
Only when warranty has ran out
@@SuperCody888no its still stressful you still have to worry about getting it off the mountain, and for us guys who only get to the mountains 2-3 times a year it really sucks to have it sitting in the shop
the rattle is sounds something like something that is wobbling upon accel or decel rotating around a shaft. Once centrifugal force is enough is quiets down. So brake rotor is a good guess.
Proven Progression's "open day in Seeley Lake" at 18:50 in the video. The cat making that same pinging sound yours was making.
Cats a tough chassis to get used to with the alpha rail. Excited for this!! Get it tuned by ibex!
Coming off a 850 matryx I was gladly surprised to find the 858 very natural/predictable.
That sound is the pull starter mechanism not recoiling all the way. Would bet your life on it. You can test it by pulling the handle just a touch while the sound is happening and I bet it will go away.
I sorta wanted to see how the new Cat would do, but now I’m ready for Ski Doo!
DUDE! i been waiting for this moment so looong!! You are the freaking best rider around riding anything that is fun not hating on brands!
Look at the right exhaust spring at 9:39 you can see it wiggling to crap
This has to be it - you can really see it when you slow the video down to .25x...
@MichaelJacobson yup
Awesome how Matt rides all brands!
Freaking rights. I’ve always wondered when Arcticat was going to make an appearance.
Well they haven’t really come out with anything new since 2017
@@CalgaryDynastar ??? ascender chassis and ctec2 was 18, Alpha rail 19, 20 they revised the ctec2 engine design, they have updated the alpha rail and track since, catalyst chassis for 24. None of that counts? Or is it just because they don't have a fancy turbo engine?
@@shanemayers777 A 2012 and 2022 Arctic Cat looks identical, old outdated junk
@@Echoes- tell me you’ve never riden one without telling me. Nothing wrong with the cats. Just because they don’t change it all at once doesn’t mean it’s a problem. The Polaris from 12-21 were pretty similar. The pro to axys wasn’t a huge change. They also had like 2-3 front end geometry changes, engine iterations, etc.
@@Echoes- you can just say you haven't rode them. A 2012 is nothing like a 2022, all you've done is prove you're a troll
Good luck with the new sled! Videos are great man. Keep up the great work!!
Man, I would be discouraged by the result, but I think it's going to be a good unit.
Hello, from france, i think noise come from Spring vibrations at high frequence against steel parts ! I have recently seen that !
Thanks for sharing your experience, it may help the rest of us out in the long run. I also appreciate the positive attitude despite the troubles.
Cat looks pretty fun tbh
I was having a blast on it
@@MuskokaFreerider Looking forward to following you throughout the season Matt!
Nice to see you on a cat! The rattling noise is 100% exhaust springs, put some high temp silicone on them👍
In Finland we used to say that "I already had everything else, but I needed to buy some problems". Good luck with the kitty lol.
Yamaha next year?
no we dont stop making shit up
Yamaha has stopped making sleds, 2025 models are the final release so.. I doubt it.
Yamaha isn’t making sleds next year
Yamaha makes cats 4t motors, in return cat has been selling them chassis.
So Yamaha has been a blue 4t only cat for quite a long time now.
BLOWS MY MIND!!! How 4 or 5 buddies can identify a known problem in minutes but an entire company can’t figure it out before making themselves look less than desirable. Do the Owners, builders and technicians not ride their own products or is everyone at Arctic Cat Skidoo ppl.😂😂😂😂
Hire these guys to test your sleds and I say that to all sled companies.
Great video🎉
That pinging almost sounds like the starter recoil
Rattle is definitely the recoil spring arm for the pull start touching and engage.
You forgot to bring catnip in your tool bag for the kitty😂
Love mine so far, has been ripping. I do have the same “ting” noise but little to no bogging. There is an engine flash out.
The pinging reminds me of the old ski doo disk brake is loose.
Yeah, it is the problem 100%
It is! Un O-ring fix the ping ping……
I’ve been throwing the same code since day 1. Ended up bending the power valve bracket because it was binding pretty bad. After I fixed it, it worked good for a bit, but it just threw that same code again yesterday, even after adjusting that bracket.. hmmm
Was not expecting this
Way cool. I’m a Doo guy but it’s cool to see cat bring something to the table worth talking about.
Most effortless machine I’ve been on ! Love the 858 154
I’m a big cat fan. I’m glad you bought one. I hope cat gets ahold of you to get your feedback to make a better machine
That’s why you buy a skidoooooooo Matt😂😂😂😂😂😂
Buy a ski doo or polaris then buy a helicopter to get it off the mountain. 😂
My 2019 Alpha does that same jingle when coming down to idle sometimes. I think it’s an exhaust spring or the recoil. I can reproduce the sound if I pull a little on my starter rope while the sled is running.
And also… Now you got me real hooked for this season 💪🏼
Your cat shits the bed and you're still razzing Dawson about changing a Polaris clutch. 😂
It’s a good thing he owns 10 other sleds he can ride when one shits the bed
After watching your last video I had a feeling you would buy a 858!! Super stoked to see how you ride it
I miss the 90's when we had more than 3 manufacturers to choose from for good properly working sleds for way less money, today they charge you for a car but give you a damn beta test product.
90s sleds rocked for lakes and rivers not for powder unless you were modding 😂
I miss the 70's...fixing all day, sleeping all night.
@@skylermummert24 That's very true.
Hes a good friend.
and the last for ever..arctic cat shout down for ever 2025
Cat was good back when they had Suzuki engines 😂
I’m excited to see you rip this thing!!
Codes, rattling tin can sounds, cheap fit and finish. Plastic running boards, I’m good on the bs cat hype
Rode Friday in the U.P. And two 858’s went down arctic scrap for sure
I rode a new catalyst alnog with 5 other new ones in Crested Butte CO 2 days ago. Zero issues
honestly this kind of honest assessment is so nice and unfortunately not the industry norm. Hopefully Cat/Textron can make improvements and stay in the game.
it's no wonder Cat going out of business
its the first model of the 858.. not taking any sides but lets not act like the 1st year 9r og doo g5 was flawless
Right
@@LK2909 first and last year
Now their going out of business? Passing your opinion off as a fact…lame..
@@brad2233they are actually... why do you think yamaha stopped making sleds???
I’ve always been a huge fan of Polaris, but the last few years I have been on the last run of M8000 and ski-doo gen4. In my opinion, the chassis of the Polaris has got to be the best, but the M8000 and gen4 motors have been dang near bullet proof for me. I can’t count how many Polaris sleds I’ve pulled off the mountain in the last two years with blown top ends. I hope Arctic cat can get the sled figured out because I think it will be a killer!
I would love a video of all the pros and cons of the 3 different manufacturers sleds after you get some time on this one
God bless
That jingle is the exhaust spring coming out of the heads, there is a silicone grommet that comes out in the spring
