This is the first time after many many videos RUclips success tips made any since. Your approach is so much more logical and systematic. All the other ones were like “angle your face this way” or “make this video since it was successful for me”. You mentioning seo and simplifying it just made that huge scary monster of a topic so much easier and manageable. Your video are great! Thank you!
Hi Gillian! I LOVE your videos and have been subscribed to you since the start - it's so awesome to see you growing so fast!! Get it, girl! I have a couple of questions about what you've mentioned! *RUclips SEO - Is it better to target low-competition, lower volume, long tail keywords and to try to rank for that first? Or is it better to use keywords with the highest search volume, regardless of competition, to increase your chance of appearing alongside more videos? I've seen mixed advice on this. Which strategy did you personally use? *CTR - What would you say is a good CTR on thumbnails? I'm just a week into my channel and my average CTR so far is around 5%. I've read that between 2-10% is normal, but hell if I know! Haha. Thank you so much!! xo
Emma SEO do both and all things. Low competition is obviously better, but don’t be afraid of high competition if your videos are high quality. CTR, 10% is better. Improve thumbnails.
Congrats on you first year of channel growth and the 100K you've achieved since then. I am in the process of making my first video and found this really helpful. I even got an idea for the thumbnail :)
Thanks for this. One thing I havent tried is naming the video file or thumbnail file. I didnt even know that was a thing until recently. Yes to the workshop! It would be cool to see a video on what didnt work for you to grow your channel and also as mentioned what didn’t really matter. xo
That's incredible!! My finance channel has only been active for about 5 month's, but it's finally starting to grow. Thanks for the great advice and motivation.
Yes, would like the workshop on tools and tips for a successful RUclips channel. As for this channel, one thing you neglected to say about success, is it makes sense that you are always easy on the eye. I do think it is good when you appear on camera that you do the best with your makeup, mannerisms clothing - etc.... Like it or not we have a visually critical culture. I was initially brought to the site by the fact that you are a pleasant looking, young and vibrant spokesperson for a "technical" and a needed subject. It only makes sense that we prefer to see a spokesperson who has invested time and effort to make themselves presentable. I get that some channels want to portray the "casual" lifestyle of working from home. But that doesn't necessarily mean I want to see some unshaven man in sweats, chugging a beer, while pecking away at a laptop, in a cluttered living room talking about getting rich. My 2-cents. Frazier
Congrats! You've done an amazing job ❤ I learned how to research for video topics from you ( a previous video 😊) , but had a question, when I really focused on "what people are looking for" and what videos are already doing good in RUclips, I started pushing aside most of the topics I believe I should be raising awareness about ( my channel is more science-related, educational style) ...I felt I was just like everyone else...am not adding anything new...yes, I am the one presenting it and everyone has a unique style but again I don't feel I am contributing ...am just following the trend. So my question is 🙌 do you recommend having a ratio for trendy/not trendy (ideas I think I should speak about)? 😅 thank you ❤
Great question! I think it's important to do a mix: topics that are popular (to attract people with content they're already looking for) and important/groundbreaking/unique content that you're passionate about. If you do only the first type, then you're right, you're wouldn't be adding any value to the pool. But if you only do the latter type then people won't find you... and you won't be able to reach as many people with your message. Hope that helps! :)
This is an excellent question, and I want to know as well. My root of my channel is hair loss, but that is just my struggle, and not my passion. Im not passionate about wigs, but my hair loss videos get the most clicks! Gillian, What do you recommended for a ratio?
Liked and subscribed. Wow! Now you are at 460,000 subscribers!! Congratulations on 2018 & 2020! What the hey! Congrats on 2019 too! I'll bet that was spectacular as well!!!
Gillian, Heck yes I want to attend your workshop! I recently got serious with my channel. I lost a ton of subscribers but gained a lot too! And I surpassed the 1000 subs goal in a few weeks! Yay! BUT! I think its because I have a viral video. I'm having a hard time with the technical end of things, such as getting my lighting and music volume balanced. How to interpret the gazillion graphs on my analytics page? I'm college educated but never took a marketing class. How do I know what my audience is there for? I did notice that my audience went from 40% male, to now it shows 85% female this month because i've been doing more mommy related video themes. Should I continue doing hair loss because it has most views?
Great job. I’m working on my new channel and hoping to be there as well but wow one year is impressive. I was just hoping to have 10,000 after first year. Maybe I need to up my goals.
If you do a RUclips Workshop, I'd make time to attend. Just starting my own channel and still feel like I don't have a solid direction. Congratulations on the fantastic achievement. It's been well earned. :)
I have applied all these steps but my channel is growing slowly. My channel turns one in 3 months and nowhere near where I wanted to be. Sure, I started to niche down only recently too but still aren't gaining many subs. I create lifestyle, self improvement videos. Congrats on your achievement I hope to get there one day.
Thanks for another good and inspiring video, Gillian. One point that I never see comments on when it comes to video on RUclips is the person in front of the camera. You are a very attractive person, and though you say you are an introvert, you speak very confidently and are able to portray yourself very well in front of people. And I think that is a major part of your growth on RUclips. Not everyone is going to be able to accomplish that. And I understand that a lot of videos on RUclips do not show the person creating them, so in that case it is not a factor. But for those type of videos where a person has to be in front of a camera I think it is important to convey yourself properly or your viewers will not stick around even if the content is good. There are a lot of self help channels out there but I haven't seen anything on this topic. What are your thoughts? Oh, I would enjoy seeing the workshop on starting a RUclips channel, as well. Thanks.
Honestly, I don't think looks has much to do with it. We're all beautiful if we take care of our bodies. :) But personality definitely does -- especially confidence, happiness, and the body language that communicates those things. You're right -- not enough people (myself included) touch on those aspects. Though I think part of it is because it would be difficult to do so without sounding prideful, even if it's not meant that way at all. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts though!
You are right, looks not so much, but if you don't present yourself well it will probably hurt you and your channel. Not everyone will do well in front of a camera.
John Collado it's all about presentation and good contents. Some are not beautiful in western standards but they present themselves beautifuly and their great personality shine through, have great contents that appealing this will cause me to subscribe.
Hi Gillian! I've been watching loads of your videos and I have been taking note of all of your tips for RUclips and following your advice. Tomorrow I am going to relaunch my channel - I'm so excited as I've worked really hard to follow your checklist and create better quality content. I have made a launch video with launch party footage that I am going to upload tomorrow, along with a video everyday this week for my launch week. The only thing is, I'm not sure what to call the launch video so it gets noticed. Any idea please? I'm at a loss for this one video. thanks so much, Stace
Congratulations 🎊 on your one year anniversary! I look forward to watching your videos. And I am interested in your “how to create your own RUclips channel” workshop. :) would like more info!
Hi Gillian! Congrats on such a great achievement! I loved this video- you give such great tips and I really appreciate you taking the time to create such quality content for us! From what I can tell, I've been implementing all of these tips on my channel, but I still can't seem to gain subscribers. My channel is all about travel (tips, hacks, vlogs, experiences from my travels, etc), and I've done really great in SEO and ranking my videos; They're almost always on the first page and usually in the top ten for my keyword. Getting views isn't too much of a problem, but people are not subscribing. I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong, or if I just need to be patient and give it more time. I have had my channel for a year, but only been consistently posting since around January of this year. I'm also wondering if maybe my channel name and banner does not make it clear what my channel is about (I have gone through a few broad niches but finally narrowed it down to travel this year). If you have some time, would you mind giving me some advice on what I should do? Make my niche more clear? Make my quality better? Keep posting consistently and be patient? I would really appreciate it! :)
These are very useful tips Gillian. Working consistency on the appropriate niche of expertise in social media by following relevant groups and forums. Thank you very much. Keep it up ☺👍
Great video, as usual Gillian! I recently found you and have been binging your stuff. You are such a good communicator and I've been learning a lot these past couple days! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us!
This is so inspiring, Gillian! These tips are amazing. I have my own channel for my affiliate marketing business and this will surely help my YT channel to grow. I cannot wait to try and apply this.

Your videos are a terrific Gillian and I subscribe to your channel. The one point that you don’t mention is the appearance of the spokesperson. You are an attractive, articulate, all American looking woman and that aspect cannot hurt on a vlog. Comments?
There are people watching RUclips videos of all personalities, ages, and with many different interests. If you have something worth sharing (and I challenge you that you do) then you should put it out there into the world! There is a type of person who LOVES who you are, but they won't be able to find you unless you put yourself out there.
I would definitely be interested in that workshop! How do I get notified of further info? Love the content. Will definitely be putting these practices into use.
I have 3 different types of videos in my channel, a nice tip is to share them in between days of the week cause they will know that they will receive that content in certain day of the week. Just a tip. Hehe

Today will be my RUclips anniversary too, because I posted my very first video TODAY! I only have 1 subscriber at the moment, but you have to start somewhere! Congratulations to you on your success!
I know consistency is key but I subscribe to someone's channel because he'll post great travel videos every now and then and the content when he does post is really good. I think the content is important as well.
