  • In this video, I explain how to clear a check engine light and pass an emissions test. Let's say you just fixed your car and need to clear a code, or you desperately need to pass the emissions test. This shows how to actively monitor your emissions and get your car ready. You will need an OBD II code reader, and some time to drive.

These past few days I've been struggling to get my vehicle fixed to pass emissions. Engine Light still kept coming on. I bought a OBD Reader a while back to see what codes are showing up. So I searched up if there was a way to pass with a Engine light on. I saw this video, tried it out myself by clearing the codes with my OBD reader. Today I drove to emissions and boom. Passed! To answer a lot of the questions here :
After you remove CHECK ENGINE LIGHT , there is no specific as to how many miles , for how long , or what kind of driving is needed to get all (or all but one) monitors to be ready so you can pass before it returns .
It depends on your vehicle and your specific problem .
Sometimes you have a window of 100 miles with no CEL coming back on , and other times it comes back on too quickly - immediately , or after only a few miles - before the monitors have a chance to become ready again .
So it's really just "do you feel lucky today"?
This will definitely work for some , but not for all .

As of July 2020, in Texas, this worked. The Torque paid app page that does the testing he is running while he drives looks very different, but as soon as you get all green check marks, you can take the car in for an emissions test. I did not turn the car off when I arrived. For my car, which is a 2012, it only took about 15 miles to get all the check marks to go green. My code was a 430 catalytic converter code. Previous to buying an OBD and paying for the app, I had unplugged the battery to clear the check engine light. The check engine light cleared, but I didn't know when it would reset the error codes, which made the OBD reader and app (total = $25) necessary and well worth it to buy me another year. There is a small window between clearing the check engine light and 'erasing' the fact that you did so viable for an emissions test.

02 Tundra had check engine light. I used battery cable reset method and drove a couple hundred miles till time to get my emissions test. It passed. Before testing, I used CataClean as directed, then changed air filter and used high octane gas plus an STP gas treatment. Not sure if any of that mattered, could have been a waste of $$, but I didn't want to chance it. Anyway, still no light after 500 miles. On a side-note, I took it to the dealer when the light first came on and they wanted $2500 to replace Catalytic converter and all sensors. I didn't want to do that.

I drive 200 to 300 miles a night, the codes went out after I replaced the upstream and downstream sensors, then
after 2 mo. the catalytic converter went bad, we are talking over 200k miles I put paint thinner in my gas as
suggested on Scotty Kilmers channel...that made the car rattle from loose parts in the converter, thought it was
my transmission, long story short just paid the shop to install a new catalytic converter.
Just clearing codes only works a short time, getting it inspected in that time is the trick, but they can see its been cleared.
even if you drive it a while, Im guessing staying under 55 kept the code from popping up.

This doesn't work. The check engine light just comes back on after you drive. This will not work to pass inspection if your catalytic is worn out. If you go before the drive cycle is complete, the code will say incomplete and inspection will tell you to come back when it's complete. Once it's complete, unless you replaced the catalytic, the check engine light will come on again and you will fail.

Again, maybe 20 miles or so, and as OP said in the vid, it's best to do the drive with a scanner so you know the codes it needs to have were actually reset. I did it without, but went back and passed, and the engine light is STILL off.

This won't work. You can reset the fault codes sure but to pass the test you have to complete a drive cycle before it'll let them pass you. So say you have a fault code or check engine light on and you clear the fault. Well now you have to drive like 70 miles and you can't turn the car off before you return the car to the inspection place because if you didn't actually repair the reason why you have the fault code if you turn off the car the check engine light will pop up when they turn the car on at the inspection place. Been there. Done that same thing.

That's a TPMS issue. This car still passes with TPMS error, as that doesn't throw the check engine light.
