- The GX550 uses the same twin-turbo V6 engine as the Toyota Tundra engine now under NHTSA recall. Is the GX550 a risk? You decide.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an official report on the Tundra/LX600 Toyota/Lexus Twin Turbo V6 (V35A) engine failures.

Finally a SENSIBLE video from an auto RUclipsr! 🙄 You hit the nail on its head! Toyota/Lexus essentially sell RELIABILITY, DURABILITY and LONGEVITY. And for many of us rabidly loyal Toyota buyers, it is the Holy Grail of our automotive purchases!
I, personally do NOT like Toyotas and Lexuses for MANY reasons, and would not touch many of their models with a ten foot pole, *_if it were not for their quality, reliability, durability and longevity!!!_*
Despite me not liking MANY aspects of Toyota/Lexus vehicles, they are all I have bought for the last TWO AND A HALF decades, for the aforementioned reasons! And I’m sure there are TONS of people exactly like me! I now have zero reason to go with a Toyota!
Now, of course, there are still _SOME_ models like the Corolla and Camry, which are most likely still good in terms of their reliability and durability. But what if you’re not in the market for those particular segments of the market?
I would not touch that Highlander with the turbo-4 with a ten foot pole! The hybrid version is most likely OK, though!
This, 100%. If there isnt reliability then what is there? Most Toyota's I have driven(cough, the 4th gen Tacoma, cough) are extremely ho-hum. Honestly, for daily driving, my GX460 was extremely mediocre.
That said, I do think the GX and the Land Cruiser/LX570/LX600 did fit into a very weird niche that really no other vehicles have filled and are why I have owned them. They can all offroad decently and they can all tow. I think this applies more to the GX550 specifically, as my GX460 was only ok at towing. It could do it but was not great. My new to me LX570 tows fantastic and still offroads just as well as the GX.
There are plenty of vehicles that can offroad, plenty that can tow, but not many that can do both decently.
@@Jay-me7gw Yes, you’re right! I was going to buy the GX 550, either next year or in 2026. I was very excited about that vehicle, but now I’ve decided I will not touch it with a ten foot pole. I feel like I dodged a BIG BULL LET! I will now look for a low-mileage one-owner well maintained late model GX 460 instead. As you said it’s boring and lackluster as they come, but I still worship it for its insane RELIABILITY, DURABILITY and LONGEVITY!!
A vehicle is a very expensive investment (at least for those of us who value our hard earned money! 🙄 - many people don’t, but that’s a discussion for another day! ), and you don’t want to feel violated when making the 2nd most expensive purchase after a home!
I wouldnt worry too much about the GX because the GX is still MADE IN JAPAN, the tundra is not. I predict it wont have as much problems as the new Tundra does.
@@Saladon89 the Lx600 is made in Japan with the same motor and is part of the recall.
Toyota managed to screw it up at both plants
Keep in mind the bulletproof 4.6 V8 we all love in our current GX’s had 200,000 motor recalls back in 2010 and 11. Toyota will work it out.
Exactly, people seem to forget historical things like this.
Same with the "bulletproof" 5.7 V8 in the last gen Tundras.
And now the Lexus TX and Grand Highlander are being recalled.
what for 😢?

Just picked up a 22 GX460…..I’d consider buying the new GX…..in 10+ years after it’s had the time to mature and become an icon like the outgoing model.
Imma hold on to me GX 460 the tenacity of this vehicle keeps me motoring on. And if in ten years I feel it I uh upgrade.
Hell yeah
Great video! Love the beach setting. Makes me feel like I’m actually there.
lol thank you, but this is the Mojave Desert, not the beach 😄
Bought a new 2023 two weeks ago 👍 nuff said.
😁 ❤️
Simply is wisdom to just wait until the new model gremlins are resolved. As much as I'd like to buy a new GX I will be holding onto my old 2004 GX.
yep same here 😢... and we need that 3rd row as an option on the OT 😆
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Amen. I think Lexus will realize they missed big time on that3rd row option. Hey, I enjoy your honest commentary. Keep up the good work.
You nailed it man but my opinion is Toyota Engine builders failed to inspect the engine Block and bearing carrier as well, before assembled the engine together I forgot attention to detail Quality product over quantity of product
Total Recall...I do believe the LS 3.44 twin turbo had a slightly different design. Different types of inter coolers etc. The Car Care Nut explained it pretty well. I do remember one Toyota/Lexus tech in Texas saying they had 4 LS cars sitting in their yard with seized engines back in 2021 when the Tundra was revealed and the engine was announced. The LS only sold about 500 units per year as well. But Toyota is not going to reveal these issues.
LS500 has 2 butterflies, truck versions have one.. minor intake differences to favor hp vs torque... base engineering of the V35A-FTS was meant for the flagship Landcruiser 300 in the world market and other TNGAF trucks and SUVs
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Yep. When The Car Care Nut interviewed the Tacoma engineer, he said the T24A in the trucks share ~54% in parts with the regular passenger vehicles T24A; I'd imagine it's within that ballpark for the V35A
sticking with my V8 GX and have now added aTesla Molel S. Feeling pretty smug now🥳!
How's the Tesla compared to the GX?
@@johnrolf4952 Best of both worlds, I'm never selling the Lexus! Tesla is still new to me, but I have big confidence it is also gonna be wonderful!
I spent 4 years in that Fremont facility, building the robotic assembly lines for Model S/X. Knowing what I know, and having experienced the people putting those cars together, I would never in my life buy one and would dissuade anyone that I love or care about from buying one.
a tesla??? you poor sad woke goose
I own a 2021 GX 460 Executive. It’s rugged and luxurious. If I had to buy now, I’d go X5 or X7. I won’t pay 110k CDN for the GX 550. If the reliability is no longer there, it’s not worth the price tag.
Love your commentary, sticky finger, deeper bearings, lmao, keep it coming….😂
Southern country boy here, 2021 GX460 as a soccer Mom cruiser, off-road what-a-be. Always look forward to your commentary. Please tell me why you appear to live in the desert. None of my business, just nosey/curious.
GX460 is a Landcruiser Prado. GX550 is a Landcruiser 300 with a slightly smaller turbo and without the front locker. 😃 ✌️ GX460s are ubiquitous offroad out here in SoCal and Landcruiser Prados are popular for off-roading worldwide 🌐
LC300?
I can tell you, I’ve thrashed it on-road, @ sustained triple digit speeds, ‘20 LS 500 F Sport😂. The engine is swift, violent and lethal. Wish I’d had this pwr-plant on those Nuremberg to Munich autobahn runs when stationed there back in the day!💨
Don’t forget that this engine is also on the Paris Dakar Hilux! Small big detail . Do your research
And the LX600 Baja 1000 race truck... And the LX600 Rebelle Rally.... that's at least 3 rally races so far 😃
For the price they are asking and what they deliver for it, this is unacceptable.
I actually think the GX price is pretty fair for what it is in this day and age. Any sort of decent body on frame truck is pushing $50k or more at this point. To get into a moderately optioned F150 crew cab 4x4 you are in the 60's.
The v35A-FTS engine is used in dakar rally racing. The engine is swapped in hilux dakar rally spec and it won that year.
yep... the LX600 was in a few races too... Baja 1000?
Had gx550 over trail plus that just came in ….. decided to keep my 2018 gx 460 and let someone else “enjoy” this first year model
Toyota/Lexus really dropped the ball. I would not buy one with someone else's money.
My new GX550 has held in Portland for 2 months (Since May) and finally released and on its way to me (Next two weeks). They say the Tundra engines are made in the US while the GX is made in Japan so that is why the issues are only on the US based models... I've been a Toyota/Lexus fanboy since my early mechanic days and I still trust Toyota to make things right. Even if something would be an issue, I am positive they will take care of us.
@@romankudriavtsev9477 ruclips.net/video/6h-X_TF1Ics/видео.html
@:05 No, keep your 460 if you got it.
You would be a fool to hold onto these newer model TT V6's. If you really want one sell the 2024 and wait 2 years to buy back in.
It would’ve been nice if Toyota made an inline 6 instead of a V6, inline 6 engines are just more balanced than a V6 and the power output shouldn’t have been affected.
In terms of packaging, it shouldn’t have been an issue considering they’re using it on thier larger body on frame vehicles.
Best tip is wait a year or two. If there’s issues well you’ve spared yourself the hassle, if not pick one up CPO and call it a day
Would say the same thing to first year of the 2GR or 1UR/3UR engines when they first came out
Our diesel turbos in Australia are just fine
I will wait for GX550 Hybrid options.
Man you beat the living crap out of your GX! Wow
I mean what else is it for? 😆 🤣
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD your one of the few who actually put their 70k vehicle to the test. Love it!
Your gx460 will last 30 years minimum with proper care. And that's being conservative! Take care and properly maintain your gx460
The good Lord knows I'm holding!
HODL??
The Lexus dealers can kiss that $20,000+ market adjustment goodbye.
amen to dat 🙏 🙌
HODL. Hold on for dear life
I will buy one, just not this first-year one! Perhaps when my 2022 GX is no longer serviceable or makes no sense to fix, I will consider getting a GX550 or GX650 😂
Oh so the sequoia has this engine too? Uh-oh
This is exactly why I’m waiting to get the 2025 model. All manufacturers have year one issues. Even Toyota. I’m not worried. It will be fixed by then. They can’t afford their reputation not to fix it. As far as the turbo engine goes, I get the same bad gas mileage as my current 4Runner but 80 more horsepower. I’ll take that deal. I will buy it expecting the same 200k miles I got out of my 4Runner. It’s made in the same factory. I expect the same results.
Exactly. Toyota has nothing to gain by making their flagship engine break _within_ warranty.
If you have a V-8 Lexus SUV then you should hold onto these vehicles until Toyota/Lexus can fix these issues. I believe the auto manufacturer has made a series of mistakes with these new vehicles.
most agree with you ❤️
2026 gx550 will be fine
truth! ❤️
even if you did want to buy one, you actually can't in most places. They dont even have them in stock, toyota does know what to do with their V6 models. GX 550 at my dealer is zero! all stuck at port.
"QC hold" 🤣👌
I’d pay $100k cash today for a GX550 or Landcruiser with the B58! Are you listening Akio?? Pull your head out and start making better decisions.
Huh
@@fredmagic09 The B58. The BMW 3.0L inline 6 cylinder that is in the Supra.
The 300 in Australia is a diesel
is the V35A-FTS available in Australia?
The difference is that the GX is MADE IN JAPAN, the tundra is not. I predict it wont have as much problems as the new Tundra does.
LX600 made in Japan is under the same V35A-FTS engine recall. Check the NHTSA report
I took Toyota off my list until they fix this. I'm back to Ram.
smart move 👌 👏
The new GX550 is a failure because Toyota went for increased power instead of better mpg. It might be worth giving up proven dependability for improved mpg, but not for unneeded acceleration.
A GX550 hybrid option will be available soon with the 2.4L Turbo and a motor
They went for both as you're forgetting there is the GX550h model soon that is the hybrid setup. Similar power to the TTv6 while achieving mid 20s mpg average
@@chibbyylol Hybrids are fascinating, but they achieve that extra efficiency by doubling the complexity. If you never go off-road that is fine. But if you go off-road, then the probability of breaking is significantly higher and a hybrid GX is likely not as rugged as the non-hybrid. It is really a hard challenge for Toyota to update the GX while keeping the dependability. We will just have to wait 10 years to see if it can be accomplished.
One of the major selling points for Toyota / Lexus has been reliability. Sacrificing that results in a detrimental impact to sales.
@@Monacheman-4x4 while agree there’ll be some impact in tundra sales from this, a majority of what Toyota sales in Camrys, rav4s, corollas etc are still fairly reliable in the overall
wait a few years
so HODL?
HOLD 😄

look up HODL 😆 ✌️
I’m a 2018 TRD Sequoia owner, traveling full-time, pulling a 6000-+ pound travel trailer, and waiting until 2027 before buying either the Tundra, Sequoia, or the GLX.
At this recall rate, my Sequoia will be worth more in the coming years if the new engines cannot remain as durable as the previous generations.
Honestly, your Sequoia is a better truck than the 3rd gen Sequoia. They no longer have full-time 4wd and the cargo area in the new one is not great. I'd keep it.
I was looking at the new Sequoias when they were first announced, but once i realized these two things I started looking at 2nd gen Sequoias and LX570's and ultimately bought the LX.
Maybe Toyota should make diesel motors instead of these turbo v6
Isn't Toyota's diesel a turbo V6? 🤣
The answer to every problem is not to just replace the motor with a diesel. They have their issues too.
It seems that the recall is for engines manufactured or assembled in America, not for those assembled and made in Japan. It is good to clarify these things. These vehicles are already in the Caribbean and throughout South America, and they have been in extreme offroad mode for months, and nothing has happened. A sabotage? Perhaps Toyota and Lexus have been the brands with the most sales in the world.🤷🏻♂️
LX600 engines are made in Japan and recalled as well...
I chose not to go the 3.5 route, but for those who have, I wouldn't panic and offload these new rigs. I'm confident that Toyota will make things right
excellent advice ❤️
If you want to keep the truck for 20 years, wait at least 2 years from the date Toyota confirms the problem has been fixed. I am considering buying the 2026 or 2027 model (preferably the 2027 model).
You would have to be delusional to think that these new Turbo engines will last “20 years” like the old NA V8s and V6s did! 😂
A couple years ago, I saw the “million mile Tundra” with the V8, and Toyota was very eager to look at that vehicle. So they bought that vehicle from the owner to (in Toyota’s own words) “take it apart and see what they did so well, and make it even better”.
And I thought to myself, yeah, right! 😂 You thought to yourself, geez, did we really build this vehicle so well? We made a big mistake, let’s see how we can cut some corners, save ourselves some money and see how we can build a lower quality vehicle that does not last _THIS_ long!
You definitely don't buy the 460 for looks, it has to be the ugliest suv that lexus ever made.
yep.. it's an ugly trapezoidal pig 🐖 sculpture
I wonder why Toyota didn't use this engine for the Supra and went with the BMW design?
possibly to keep with the "straight 6" legacy of the Supra?
Lest we forget the Landcruiser has an even bigger legacy with the inline 6. (Series 80)… Had Toyota gone with the B58 instead it would have been wildly successful across the board. Total game changer.
It was co-designed with BMW. Both are built in Austria. The supra is all BMW.
I mean they borrowed the whole car from BMW, not just the engine. It was probably easier.
No don’t buy
HODL? Are you in crypto?
We're in engine failures! 😆
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD just rotating down the risk curve 😅

Toyota will make sure you get your 60K miles as promised, nothing more. The front of the truck is a wind sail (compared to the LS). The inverse square law becomes significant and *pop goes the little motor that couldn't*
And yet Ford has had 2.7L and 3.5L Ecoboosts in an even larger wind sail(the F150) for 14 years and were not having major bottom end failures. It has nothing to do with the size of the motor, just the design and manufacturing.
In other words, Toyota screwed up.
@@Jay-me7gw Eco-boost, FORD? Thanks for the laugh!
@@nightdipper5178 Keep laughing. At least Ford built a motor that wasnt blowing up at 20k miles 🤣 Toyota couldnt figure that out apparently.
I am not buying it is because of the debris, but more a design issue
What would be the "design issue"?
ruclips.net/video/6h-X_TF1Ics/видео.html
Stay away from turbo engines.
2jz, t24a and b58 would like a word. Also car care nut recently had a video of a nx200t that went 40k miles with NO OIl CHANGES until the turbo gave out. Just depends on the engine
Also note this ttv6 engine in question isn’t having bearing issues because of the turbos. You take the turbos out of this engine and still die to the manufacturing defect it could have bearing damage
... what happened with the V35A-FTS has nothing to do with a turbine 😉 People are thrashing on the 300HP GR Corolla turbo engines without issue and that's half of this engine making way more HP per cylinder and Toyota invites owners to trash them on the track too 😃
@@chibbyylol correct. Everyone fears turbos, but lacks actual knowledge as to how engines handle pressures or high RPMs. just because youre increasing pressure doesn't automatically mean you're going to blow a head gascket. If the engine is designed right a turbo engine can actually outlast a naturaly aspirated engine. There's different grades of steel and other alloys that can be used to strengthen engines as well as a slight increase in wall thickness of the cylinder jackets can also help increasereliability. from everything that I've seen regarding the new toyota v6 issue seems to be more of a manufacturing process and a lack of quality control rather than a design issue. If the process is imrpoved and quality control issues rectified, then we should see in a few more years from now if they will be reliable engines or not. And we have to keep in mind, every time they manufacture a new engine design, there's always growing pains. Now would I recomend people to buy this car, I would definitely advise people hold off until they rectify the issue completely. Hopefully Toyota does right by their customers.
@pyronic120120 the V35A-FTS is overbuilt... but naturally that's a hard pill to swallow for many right now 😆
It's not a turbo issue
Stay away from the GX550. Turbo and other problems total 💩.
