"Under Pressure" is the result of a collaboration by David Bowie and the four members of Queen. Bowie visited Queen while they were in their studio in Montreux, Switzerland (Bowie had a home nearby) and they all decided to go for pizza together. At dinner, they decided to return to the studio and jam. just to see what happened. "Under Pressure" (originally titled People on the Street') was the result of this jam session.
The notable bass line, written and performed by Queen bassist John Deacon, was famously sampled by Vanilla Ice in his 1990 song “Ice Ice Baby.” Ice added only one different note, and tried to pass it as an entirely different composition. Things were tense around “Ice Ice Baby”-the song went to #1 but Ice hadn’t credited Queen or Bowie. Queen and Bowie sued but Ice decided to settle out of court by paying them $4,000,000. Queen and Bowie agreed to give up any rights to "Ice Ice Baby" but insisted that their names had to be added to the writing credits.
The origin story of Queen is this. While attending university, Brian and Roger were in a rock group called Smile along with Tim Staffell who was the lead singer/bass guitartist and an old friend of Brian's from grammar school. Tim was attending Ealy College studying Graphic Design where another student named Farrohk (Freddie) Balsara, an immigrant from the African island of Zanzibar, also attended studying Graphic Design.
Freddie's family are Parsi (aka Parsee), who are followers of the religion of Zoroastrianism. The Parsi were Persians who originally fled to India from Muslim persecution in Persia during the 7th-8th century. They maintain an ethnoreligious community still practicing Zoroastrianism in India.
Freddie's father worked for the British Foreign Office and was stationed in Zanzibar where Freddie and his sister were born. Freddie was sent to a British-style Christian boarding school outside of Bombay (now Mumbai) at the age of 8 years old to be educated. Though he was around 3,000 miles from his parents, his grandparents, aunt, and cousins lived in a village outside Bombay called Balsar.
After Freddie completed school, he returned to Zanzibar to be with his family but then there was a Muslim uprising on the island. The family had to flee with just basically the clothes on their backs to London in 1964. That is how Freddie ended up at Ealy College.
Freddie and Tim became friends since not only were they both studying the same major but they both were singers in rock groups. Freddie at the time was in a rock blues band based out of Liverpool called Wreckage.
Tim invited Freddie to watch Smile rehearse and that is how Freddie first met Brian and Roger. Freddie would go to watch Smile perform whenever he could and then hang around with the band afterward. Though Freddie was known to be sort of quiet, shy, and reserved in his personal life, he would get very enthusiastic when talking about music. Brian said that Freddie would come to them after a show and start by saying that they were great but, then he would proceed to tell them all the things they should have done differently.
Freddie, Brian, and Roger became good friends. At one point, Roger and Freddie shared a flat and jointly ran a stall selling "Vintage" clothing at Kensington Market to earn money.
After about 2 years, Tim informed Roger and Brian that he was leaving the group Smile to join the band called Humpty Bong. Humpty Bonh actually had an album contract, something that the group Smile was never able to get.
Brian and Roger were devasted and vowed to quit music altogether but their good friend, Freddie would not let them. It turned out that their quiet and reserved friend could be quite persuasive when he was really motivated. He convinced them that they were too good of musicians to quit and that they just needed to form a new band.
Brian and Roger began advertising for a singer and bass guitarist. They auditioned several people but didn't find anyone they felt was right. They were getting discouraged until Freddie came to them one day and said, "You know who you need, is me!".
Now they knew that Freddie was in a band but it played the circuit out of Liverpool. Neither Roger nor Brian had ever actually heard Freddie sing or watched him perform. The Freddie that they were familiar with was quiet, shy, and reserved which made a lovely friend but those are not qualities that a rock band looks for in their lead singer.
But, once again, Freddie was persuasive and convinced them to give him an audition. Brian booked a rehearsal room at Imperial College (where he studied math and physics) and they auditioned Freddie.
Both Roger and Brian were amazed by the sudden transformation of their friend into a confident and charismatic performer with an amazing voice! However, Roger did admit that Freddie did sometimes sound a bit like a billy goat when he sang. Freddie had not mastered complete control of his voice yet and his vibrato sometimes ran amok.
So in 1970, the three of them agreed to form the core of a new band as they continued to look for a bass player. It was Freddie who insisted that since they were to be a new band, the needed a new name. He suggested the name "Queen" which Brian and Roger immediately rejected. They all were aware of the "gay" connotion of it.
But Freddie was pursistant and persuaded them. He had carefully chose the name "Queen" for the band because it was grandiose and larger-than-life, reflecting his own appearance and regal aspirations for success. Freddie favored the simplicity of a one-word name and chose "Queen" because it was very regal, sounded splendid, and was a strong name that was universal and immediate.
All they needed was a bass guitarist. They actually went through 4 or 5 before they finally found John Deacon. John was only 19 in 1971 when he joined the band and still at university, John studied Electronics and he actually graduated with an Honors Degree in Electronics. Poor John, he never wanted to be a rock star. He just wanted to play his guitar on the weekends while in school to unwind.
When John auditioned, they recognized immediately his talent and his quiet demeanor would work well with the more forceful personalities of the other three but.Roger and Brian were not quite convinced since John was only 19 (Freddie was 24, Brian 23, and Roger 22 at the time). There is a big difference in the maturity level of college graduates in their early 20s and a university student still in his teens. But Freddie was sure and convinced them to give John a try.
Freddie immediately took John under his wing and began to mentor him. John and Freddie became especially close, like big brother and little brother. Even John's wife, Veronica credited Freddie with getting John through the stress of being a rock and roll superstar. Freddie pushed John to begin writing songs and would work him on his song writings without taking any credit. (All 4 of them wrote songs and all 4 had hit singles.)
Brian and Roger were not surprised when Freddie past away that John decided to retire from music. He just couldn't imagine containing to perform without Freddie.

The art college was Ealing. As shared, Freddie was very much like a big brother to John. John’s father passed away when he was a young teen. Freddie’s mentoring really helped John throughout his time with Queen until Freddie passed away. Queen has a sponsored documentary called Days of Our Lives which you can watch on RUclips. Quite a few folks have incorporated it into their reactions to Queen.

The whole Wembley concert was fire 🔥 2 hours of greatness! I’ve watched it multiple times 😊 the Rock and Roll medley from this concert is great! The US was not very kind to the band and Freddie so they quit touring in the US. MTV banned their video “I Want to Break Free” (part of the video is the guys in drag-as an homage to a popular British show Coronation Street, which the US didn’t understand and just saw it as promoting cross dressing and sexuality), but is actually about women breaking free from traditional roles and written by John Deacon. Definitely react to that video!

The name Queen was thought of by Freddie because Brian and Roger’s old band was called “Smile”, and when their main singer left (Tim Staffell) Freddie took over and ............................ the rest is history xxx
The Queen’s crest was also painstakingly created and done by Freddie as he studied arts and graphics at Ealing College (where he met Brian and Roger ). Anyway here’s the reasoning to it:-
Mercury looked at the zodiac signs for inspiration. To reflect the four band members, he placed two lions for Deacon and Taylor, who are Leos, a crab for May's Cancer birthday, and two fairies since Mercury himself is a Virgo. Brian's cancer zodiac (a crab) sits on the letter Q whereas the two lions and the two fairies surround it, moreorless guarding inside the "Q" the Queen state crown, and then the whole lot is emblazoned with a phoenix which signifies rising from ashes again to be never ending in life, power and passion.
Just another glimpse into the mind of a genius ❤

Hey Mr. and Mrs. C., great reaction... thanks so much...
YES, Vanilla Ice "stole" the bassline for their song "Ice Ice Baby" from Queen before they released "Under Pressure"... Queen sued and won but they never said what the settlement was...
The story has it that David Bowie had once bought a pair of boots from Freddie in his kiosk store in London back in the late 60's where he ran a clothing store... they became friends and watched each other's careers blossom... David was living in Montreaux at the time and heard Queen was in the studio recording... they agreed to meet and when they were just jamming and having fun, they decided to go out for dinner (and got plastered) and when they made it back to the studio, John had forgotten the bassline riff, but Roger remembered it... They recorded in studio but never ever played the song together live in concert. There is one rendition of this where they splice shots of Bowie singing this, which was taken from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert done 6 months after his passing.
YES, I would now consider you 'Queenie's'... the band was called SMILE when Tim Staffell and Brian and Roger played, but when Tim wanted out of the business, Freddie stepped in and made history (thank God every day)... and Freddie was the one that decided on the name QUEEN... the others were a little reluctant thinking it was a little pompous, but then agreed... the rest is history.
YES, the beginning "warm-up" of the audience is a normal tradition of Freddie's somewhere in each concert... sometimes it may just be Freddie impromptu "skatting" along with the band... someone once asked Freddie what instrument he preferred to play, and he replied "the audience, darling"... also, on occasion you will see Freddie "moon" the crowd like at LIVE AID, which you MUST do since it is considered the BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE IN ROCK HISTORY... and Freddie's "AY- OH" is fondly recognized as "the Note Heard 'round the World"... the "mooning" is the result of their first manager's treating them rather harshly... the songs "Flick of the Wrist" and "Death on Two Legs" are two songs that explain the reasoning, it was Freddie's way of 'saluting' the manager that told him he would never amount to anything...
ALSO, you may want to go back and hear Freddie BEFORE he was Queen... there are two songs on RUclips under the name LARRY LUREX (Freddie's alter-ego)... "I Can Hear Music" and "Goin' Back"... story has it the Trident Studios where they were recording their first album needed someone to test some new equipment they had purchased and asked Queen to record a couple songs in exchange for valuable airtime... also the song "Doing Alright" was a holdover from SMILE since Brian wrote it...
WOW, really enjoying your enthusiasm for our favorite performers... such great reactions. Most people realize you have to pause SOME, but like you said, never in the guitarists' solo... especially Sir Dr. Brian May, the GOAT of guitarists and astrophysicists, by the way... anxiously awaiting your next drop... blessings.

  • @Gillie51-bl8su

Thanks for yet another brilliant reaction. This is another performance that shows each member of the band giving their all. David Bowie wasn't happy with the way his vocals came out, so while he shared writing credits, he asked for his vocals to be removed. Therefore, this is basically a duet between Freddie and Roger, with Freddie singing David Bowie's original part, and Roger covering Freddie's, all driven by John's original bass line.
Vanilla Ice did 'sample' the bass line, claiming it was different (by one note). Queen sued. The judge declared it was close enough to be the same, then rather than going through a court case, the two parties settled out of court, with vanilla ice paying up, and then adding writing credit to Bowie and Queen.
Funny story about the bass line. John played it, everyone loved it, then they went to lunch. When they got back, John couldn't remember it, but Roger did! And the rest, as they say, is history. You mentioned Freddie singing opera. I suggest you look for Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé's duet of 'Barcelona' live! The pair were very good friends in Freddie's latter years, and they recorded an album together.

Queen and David Bowie created this song together. John came out with the famous bass reef but then they all went out for lunch and when they got back, John had totally forgotten it 😮...luckily Roger remembered it.
In a creative process Freddie and David went into separate booths to see what ideas they'll come out with and Freddie was pleasantly surprised when he heard that David had done similar music as he did 😮 untill their sound engineer Mack (yep, it's MACK who worked with Queen on many songs including One Vision) told him that David cheated by listening what Freddie was doing 😅😂
David Bowie also sang back vocals on few other songs but just before the release of Queen's album Hot Space he revoked them and all had to be taken out just last minute.😮
Although David was a long friend with Freddie he never sang Under Pressure live with Queen. First time he sang it at Freddie's Tribute Concert in 1992.

That 2 and something minutes of Freddie's warming up with the crowd was shown on the closing ceremony of 2012 London Olympics. 4 large screens with Freddie were brought to the centre of the stadium by trucks and it was magical. Freddie's yellow jacket was shining like a star and his voice echoed ... like out of this world, it was just as Freddie commanded the crowd from Heaven. There were also Brian and Roger playing We will rock you. Amazing.

Just wondering, have you seen the movies Highlander and Flash Gordon? Queen did the music for both movies. If you know Highlander, the song Who Wants to Live Forever is just heartbreaking. An immortal who falls in love with a mortal woman, knowing he'll long outlive her. He loves her so much that on her death bed he promises to light a candle and remember her on her birthday, and 400 years later he's still honoring his pledge.

Freddie's voice is unmatched, nowadays singers use commonly an auto tune during the concerts.
Did you know that even scientific study confirms Freddie Mercury had an unparalleled singing voice. That what makes his voice so special was extremely fast vibrato 7.04 Hz and subharmonics. He was able to create several more layers of harmonics than anyone else. Freddie was using a subharmonics by vibrating his ventricular folds, a technique usually found only in Tuvan throat singers. One of the conclusions from the studies was that "Mercury was vibrating something in his throat that even Pavarotti couldn't move and that kind of creates a very typical vocal fingerprint"

Freddie was also considering 2 more collaborations. The first with Michael Jackson who was a big admirer of Queen. Freddie went to LA to record with MJ but he had to call his manager when MJ showed up for the recordings with a lama. Freddie said to his manager” You must get me out of here now! They are making me sing with a lama!”. The second collaboration was supposed to be with Elton John and Rod Stewart. The 3 of them were entertaining the idea of forming a band they wanted to name” Teeth, Nose and Hair”. It never happened either. Great intelligent reaction! Late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters was a big Queen fan and he sang Under Pressure at almost every FF gig. He recalled: "In 1999 we were driving to our rehearsal studio in Virginia to start writing songs for
our third album. We had the radio playing and Under Pressure came on. We all sat there silent, listening. When it was over, Dave Grohl turned arround to the rest of the band and grinned: Why are we even trying? Like we're going to do anything even close to that song." 😮😅🥰

Freddie said he didn't want to recreate the studio version of songs. People could stay home and play their records. I love watching people experience Queen for the first time. There are young RUclipsrs doing reaction videos who have grown up with hip hop and rap and they totally get into Queen. They do every style of music and can appeal to just about everyone. Freddie Mercury's stage presence and charisma is the GOAT. Think if he had been evil with his ability to control people? He could have been a Hitler. The venue was Wembley Stadium. A building built in 1923 & our national (England & UK) main stadium. Football (soccer ☹) was invented in England & this stadium is where the English Football League always played the Football final. The building was/is something of a legend in its own right. Only the biggest bands played at Wembley & Queen being such a beloved band here, were always recieved well. Every word/note known by the vast crowd & Freddie/Queen knew that. We have a modern Wembley stadium now, complete with a huge arch. Although still seen as the stadium of Football & for great bands to play, it perhaps does not hold the admiration of that old stadium. And most bands today cannot replicate what Queen meant playing at that venue. Precious times gone by remembered as one of the greatest concerts in our history. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Well done Mrs Coach for the Queen t-shirt. Yes there was a law suit that setttled out of Court. Freddie was at home one day eating breakfast and Ice Ice Baby came on the radio and he wondered what the **** it was. He then got on the phone to Jim Beach (lawyer/manager) and he instantly replied to Freddie “already heard it law suit ready to go”. Vanilla Ice tried to say the riff was different and that it had an extra chord in it (what a load of crap) OBVIOUSLY he lost and had to pay backlog in royalties and ended up having to pay Roger, John, Freddie, Brian and David millions. Their names were also added as Songwriters, which was kind of funny as Queen & David Bowie hated it ❤❤❤❤

David Bowie popped into a studio in Montrose when they were recording, and hung out with them... John came up with the riff, just messing around, and they headed off to dinner ... They came back and said to John, what was that thing you were playing? I think they improvised the entire thing for the most part... It's a great story! And, as far as them being one of the best live bands EVER,... THEY WERE! I've probably seen a hundred or several hundred live recording acts, and some may have matched them, a little bit... But ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS EVER SURPASSED THEM! And this particular show was at Wembley, were live aid was done! 70,000 or so people... And I'm past the halfway point here, and I'm kind of surprised that you haven't mentioned the fact that the extremely high singing Roger is doing the David Bowie low parts, and killing them, no less! And vanilla ice " sampled " John's riff... (STOLE!)... Freddy had a great short, concise simple answer to the question about the name of the band...
