Yes Vanilla Ice stole the bass line for Ice Ice Baby and got sued by Queen and David Bowie. Freddie controlled every audience there was.

Without all the drugs and other past problems, if that is a flop, sign me up!

Queen consisted of four enormously talented, educated professional musical artists. Freddie was a force of nature with his amazing voice and energy and he liked to change the songs just a bit each concert so no one got bored. They all are listed in the rock hall of fame for. Songwriting as well as for Performances! ❤

John deacon originally played the riff on the bass back in 1981. Vanilla ice famously sampled it for his hit "ice, ice baby". John may have been "the quiet one" in the band but he was an enormously talented and creative force within Queen!
I just looked up if Vanilla Ice had permission or stole it. He stole it and wound up buying the rights to the song rather than fighting an expensive court battle.

Queen & Bowie camps have long been clear, VI bought ONLY the right to use the bass line in Ice, Ice Baby, including in re-issues & re-mixes. He does not own ANY rights to Under Pressure & can't use the bass line in any other song. In 2017, on the Dan Patrick show, after years of claiming he already owned it, VI said he'd just recently bought Under Pressure from Brian May (who actually only owns a part, so couldn't sell the song, anyhow). Asked about the most recent claim, Brian looked surprised, shook his head, smiled & said "he is mistaken."

It was VI's lying (which he's still doing) & changing his story over & over (1-he'd never heard UP. 2-maybe he'd heard it, but his was different, because he added a note & 3-finally admitting, he took the bass line from his brother's Queen record) that brought industry & fan scorn, especially with Queen & Bowie fans.
There is nothing like the version with Freddie and David Bowie singing this together like the studio version. Two music legends singing an incredible song.

Watch the video again. They aren't singing together. It's an edit. Albeit a very good one. The David Bowie footage is from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. He sang the song with Annie Lennox and someone spliced the footage together.

The song was released on October 26, 1981 as a single by Queen featuring David Bowie. Freddy Murcury, David Bowie, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and Brian May are listed as the writers of the song. That riff is actually John Deacon and his Bass. According to Brian May and Roger Taylor: Deacon wrote the Riff. According to Deacon David Bowie wrote it and according to David Bowie the Bass riff was already written by the time he got involved. John Deacon did the Bass Riff in this version of the song. According to Brian and Roger, John came up with the riff, when they came back from lunch John had forgotten it and Roger had to hum it to him. Class.
Thank you for your reaction. For me, it's not a matter of crowd control. The audience was captivated by Freddie. He was absolutely brilliant in encouraging audience participation. His charisma, spark and energy was such that they wanted to sing with him! And Freddie wanted them to as well. He let them, lead them, and sometimes (as in "Love of My Life") he just had them sing to him.
I've always imagined the feeling of being a singer and having a crowd sing your song for you. I love the live versions of Love of My Life where it's just Freddy and Brian.

There's a famous interview of Queen in their early days. The interviewer asked each band member what instrument they played, when he asked Freddie which instrument he played, Freddie replied " the audience, darling".
Wembley Stadium has been known to host the top artists of all time!! When Queen was booked there one year after their historic-making performance at Live Aid .. the promoters added a second night! Tickets 🎟 sold out quickly!! Under Pressure sent electricity thru the crowd. Freddie’s yellow jacket etched in history forever!! 💛💛💛

yeah queen and david bowie sued them and both the band and bowie are now credited on the vanilla ice song and he also paid royalty's (though he keeps pretending he bought the song under pressure from brian may when brain may doesn't even have the complete rights to it)
When describing Freddie after following him/the band for a few months a reporter aptly wrote "Freddie had a microphone in one hand and... the world in the other"!! That sums it up perfectly!! Freddie was one of a kind and a very gentle, beautiful soul who had a lot to share with us. He lives on through his music. Great reaction guys!!!🥰🥰🥰
Oh and p.s... Vanilla Ice stole, not sampled, Queen's/bassist Jon Deacon's riff (aka dancing Deaky! lol!!🙃😂). Just wanna answer your question... it was Queen/John Deacon's riff from 1981!! Vanilla Ice stole it (and tried to pass it off as his own in 1990). Don't get me wrong... when Ice Ice Baby came out we all had a blast dancing to it, however... we recognized it immediately as "Under Pressure".
The court case that ensued afterwards was hysterical. Even the judge presiding over the case laughed in Vanilla Ice's face when he tried to explain that he added a note to the riff so it wasn't John Deacon's riff. WTH????? Again, the judge laughed in his face and not only was Vanilla Ice forced to give writing credits to Queen on his song "Ice Ice Baby".... the judge gave Queen a share of all proceeds of Ice's song past, present and future!👊
The greatest band of all time No band, solo, duo or group can ever nor will ever be nearly as good as Queen. Freddie had a presence while on stage. Check out his Live Aid concert. It's beautiful and mesmerizing in its simplicity but 100% true greatness. Love you guys!!
Possibly the greatest ever band, and Freddie one of the greatest voices/showmen EVER ! for real real. People use "GREAT", "LEGEND" far too often. Queen/Freddie Mercury are genuinely befitting of the such superlatives

HOW... said it before i say it again just HOW do these guys sound better live than most bands sound in a polished studio performance....... the love for freddie and queen by us fans is immense even after all this time.... i would give anything to go watch them live again....

I only saw them once. It’s true. Crazy true. His hold on his sudirpence is insane. I had goosebumps, my hair stood on end, I had tears in my eyes. People sang out loud to Bohemian Rhapsody which had just come out. I don’t think he owned us more than it was Freddie made us part of the band, part of the song.And one more thing. This is live !! His voice sounds like he’s in a studio. Take my word for it live concerts in big venues don’t sound like this. A handful do. Sometimes Bowie did. I loved Bob Seger.

That riff sounds familiar because Vanilla Ice sampled it and used it on Ice Ice baby. He didn’t give credit and got sued by Queen and David Bowie. Now they have the writers credit for his song. Easy E also sampled it on Easy Duz it.
I have been a fan of Queen since the start. What I liked, besides the larger than life personality of Freddie Mercury, was that their catalog of songs are so different and varied.

There are very few people who are born to be true entertainers, Freddie Mercury was one of those. BJ hit on it, his command of the audience was legendary. Think about it, he just said “fuck you” to the whole audience and they loved him for it. His Live Aid performance was iconic. If you get a chance, react to the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the other channel. Rami Malik won an Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie. ❤ y’all. Keep doing that thang.
Roger Taylor said in an interview once "I think for the audience, they want to be blown away at first. We used to say blind them, deafen them, and then calm them down for 20 minutes, but you really want to go bang, bang, bang, bang at the beginning of a show" That was Queen's formula when they performed live and it obviously worked lol. I agree they should react to the 20-minute Live Aid set as it is epic, and generally agreed to be the greatest rock performance ever ... but it was in 1985 and Freddie wasn't diagnosed until 1987. He did have a throat infection that day, not that you'd know it from the way he sang!
That was made up for the movie. He had a throat infection but wasn’t diagnosed with AIDS until two or three years after Live Aid.

Just FYI...one doesn't just get AIDS in the 80s...one has HIV first, then it becomes AIDS after one has had it for years before proper diagnosis. This was the 80s, after all ...and everyone was ignoring the disease, including those who were 'just sick with a sore throat'. 🤷

I remember watching the Concert "Live"on MTV and it was incredible. the broadcast were broken up into feeds from different Live aid locations so we didn't get to catch all the live performances. It was broadcast from London, and Philadelphia. What an incredible moment in History
Freddie wanted everyone to have fun, what better way to have fun then have 80,000 friends join and sing with you. The entire band knew this 100%. As a fan, I enjoy it even more when I see the performers enjoying the experience too.

GUYS, I was having a crappy day… and this made everything BETTER!
The bass riff was created by John Deacon the bassist. The lyrics were mostly Freddie Mercury, and added to by David Bowie at an impromptu jam session/recording session in Switzerland. But the 2 never performed live together. All of Queen's members were accomplished musicians. Brian May has a doctorate in Astrophysics. But no one controlled a crowd like Freddie. That crowd was 150,000 people!
If you think there was a large audience, consider that the live at Wmbley '86 lasted two consecutive days. Queen filled the London stadium for two consecutive days July 11th and 12th. Considering the two days, the audience was close to 400,000 people.
Queen's Bass player John Deacon wrote that bass line. That is him in the beginning latin' it down.... The original studio track was in collaboration with the late great David Bowie who traded vocals with Freddie, definitely worth listening to.
John Deacon, Queen's bassist, originated the bass rift. Vanilla Ice appropriated it without permission. He later paid Queen 4 or 5 million USD for it. The actual amount was supposed to be kept quiet.
The coolest thing I learned about the Live Aid performance, is that thanks to the size of the crowd, when they were clapping along to Radio GaGa you could actually _see_ and _measure_ the speed of sound through the crowd - since they clapped when they heard a certain part of the song, but those at the back heard it slightly later than those at the front. So the claps made a wave that travelled back from the front to the back of the crowd at the speed of sound. It was the first time this phenomenom was captured on video. I dunno why, but the inner Queen AND geek inside me absolutely _loved_ learning this!! Just made me SO happy for some reason haha 😁

Raido Ga Ga at Live Aid is also pretty intense! Freddy commands the audience and his voice almost like a Maestro. It's quite astonishing to watch! The energy is electric!

To answer your question at the end....yes..the bass riff you recognize is their riff. Several artists, most notabley Vanilla Ice have used the riff. It does belong to Queen. You can thank Mr. John Deacon for that one. He was a brilliant song writer. He wrote several of Queens big hits and has dropped some of the most memorable bass lines in music history. Another One Bites the Dust is another example of an iconic bass riff that you know immediately when you hear it.

The big question who did that guitar rift first. Was it Queen in 1981 or was it Vanilla Ice in the 90's? We may never know the answer, but I lean towards the ones who did it first.
Under Pressure was from the album "Hot Space" which came out when I was in University. There is not a bad or even not excellent track on the album. At the time I was buying vinyl records and I ended up buying this one twice because I wore out the first copy by playing it so much! I later got it on CD too when CD players became a thing. Now I am 60, and this album is still one I return to time and again, the whole band were top level musicians and singers, any of them could have been lead singer for another band, but Freddie tied them together.

Absolutely amazing Queens legendary flamboyant live concerts were outstanding, I actually attended this live concert in 1986 , Queen played two consecutive nights at Wembley the Friday and Saturday 72 thousand people in the crowd both nights , both nights sellout concerts, so Queen added an extra concert at Knebworth Stevenage the crowd was 140 thousand people, this was Freddie’s last live concert, he turned to band mates I said I cannot do live concerts anymore, Queen guitarist John Deacon rift was stolen by Vanilla Ice and Queen we’re so angry they sued Vanilla Ice and won Royalties of 4 million dollars, great reaction thanks 🙏
