Short story from Brian: „I think Freddie had more belief in me than I had. I remember once we’d have been arguing about a song and I was feeling kinda insecure about my part in it. The next day Freddie came over and said: „ I’ve got something for you, darling. I’ve got this little casette.” He had spent hours and hours at night in the studio putting together all of the solos that I’d done up in our albums to that time. He said: „Just listen to this.” And he’d made it into a continuous sort of guitar solo thing, to encourage me, but that was him. He would surprise you in all sorts of ways.”

This is a beautiful comment - thank you for sharing it with us. It shows the deep respect and affection Freddie had for Brian and, in the many interviews I've heard, Brian honors Freddie not only for his musicianship, but - more importantly -for his character. Thanks again.

Sadly Brian can't find that tape now ... Also Freddie wrote a song Soul Brother for Brian (incomponated a lot of names of songs written by Brian into lyrics). ❤
👑 were like a close family of 4 brothers. If you know their zodiac (Freddie draw a Queen crest representing all 4) Brian = Cancer, Roger and John = Leo, Freddie = Virgo 😅😮😮😅 then it is normal that they had a great share of fighting (in most cases over a trivial things) but they were all educated to a high level and they all had a big heart and they lived, breathed and dreamed music. They cared for each other. When Freddie got ill they protected him like lions, they made a safe blanket around him, doing everything they could to protect him and make him safe from savage press, they hide information they lied ... and they succeeded to make him a peaceful environment in Montreux recording studio so he could do what he loved most = music. On those final days at the studio Freddie asked Brian to write him anything and Brian, scrambled lines of Mother Love to pieces of paper so Freddie could sing them...❤💔😢

In 2020, _Total Guitar_ readers voted Sir Dr. Brian May the top guitar player of all time. This last list from Rolling Stone (derided by hundreds of guitar enthusiasts and players) put May at 33. Not the ranking many would give, but much better than some guitarists did who didn't even make the list. Spike is a dream in the touring band world. He is on tour right now with Queen... 71 years old! The septarians rule the Queen Rhapsody Tour! As usual, your reaction was fantastic. Your obvious enjoyment for Queen feeds this Queenie's soul! Absolutely brilliant reaction! I love the way they improvise around the main song. No performance of any individual song is ever the same.
The guy in the pink shirt is Spike Edney. They hired him in 1984, to free Freddie from his static position at the piano, and give him more freedom to run around the stage, and interact with the audience. Over the two years he worked live with them back then, he also filled in with extra guitar and backing vocals as required. You might have noticed him playing piano during Live Aid.
Queen isn't the only band he worked with. He was like the travelling 'extra' who was called upon by some of the bigger bands when extra power was needed!
As far as I know, right now, he's touring the US with the current Queen line-up.

The meaning of the song was effectively settled when guitarist Brian May wrote on his website that “Hammer to Fall is really about life and death, and being aware of death as being part of life”, and that “the Hammer coming down is only a symbol of the Grim Reaper doing his job!”
Yes, Wembley was packed with 72,000+ on both nights of the Queen Magic tour. (July 11 and 12, 1986).
The extra rhythm guitarist is Philip "Spike" Edney. Queen hired him to play piano, rhythm guitar on some songs, and backing vocals. He is not an official member of Queen.
In the later years, Freddie did not want to play the piano as much during the live tours. He had never been really confident in his piano playing (believe it or not, he didn't think he was very good on the piano, though the rest of the band thoroughly disagreed). Freddie preferred being able to move about on stage while he sang. so the band found ways to creatively release him from the shackles of the piano. For example, while performing the ballad "Save Me", Brian would play the piano (with his guitar in his lap) during the first part of the song and then Freddie would take over the piano duties when Brian began his guitar solo.
In 1984, beginning with "The Works" tour, Queen hired Spike Edney to accompany them mostly on keyboards (his main instrument), plus some rhythm guitar and backing vocals. Edney can be seen on Queen's "Live at Wembley Stadium" and "Hungarian Rhapsody" concert films, playing rhythm guitar on "Hammer to Fall," and piano on both "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Tutti Frutti." He can also be seen playing in the background during Queen's 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium.
FYI - You should really watch Queen performing the medley of some of the rock 'n roll songs that inspired them while they were growing up. Check out this medley of "Your So Square" (Buddy Holly.& The Crickets), "Hello, Mary Lou Goodbye Heart" (Ricky Nelson), and "Tutti Frutti (Little Richard) -
WARNING!! Freddie was very fond of using the F-bomb. It is almost impossible to find an onstage quote of him that does not include a couple of F-bombs. It was just the way he talked.
You're So Square Baby I Don't Care - Hello Mary Lou Goodbye Heart - Tutti Fruttiruclips.net/video/yq1QSpsdqLc/видео.html.

I love this song. Brian rips it. Written by Brian and Freddie really nails the vocals. Roger and John really do a great job filling out the back end. John looks great in those yellow shorts, he has some fine looking legs! Personally I think that the most current Rolling Stone list of best guitar players missed the mark on so many and omitted so many that definitely should have been on it. I don't know who made up the list but they need to up their game because this time, Rolling Stone got it very wrong. That is Spike Edney on the second guitar. He is a multi-instrumentalist often called the 5th member of Queen. He usually is playing piano when Freddie needs to be up front but also plays other instruments for the band but not usually in the main part of the stage. He still plays with Queen + Adam Lambert and also played on Roger Taylor's most recent solo tour. Thank you both for a wonderful reaction.

Another one favorite from my favorite reaction channel! The melody that carries on the punches the cohesiveness of it. Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Yes, they used to fight on the road to perfection every day, but the driving vision was always there. One day in his 20 Freddie was sitting in a coffee shop in London sipping tea thinking about something. He got up suddenly and declared loudly “One day I am going to be a star!” then he headed to the door, but he turned around and said “No! One day I am going to be a legend!” and then walked out. I assume the customers thought that that guy who walked out had a screw loose. Little that they knew. Queen is royalty!

In the future, you could react to all the recordings - Freddie’s voice, Brian’s playing and especially John’s bass playing really shine through! PS - Rolling Stone always sneered at Queen for a variety of reasons. I think being massively successful was seen as a real sin!

I just want to say one thing about Spike Edney -- He is the _quintessential_ touring musician. A great example of this is at the Tayor Hawkins Tribute Concert where instead of the full touring band of Queen + Adam Lambert it was Roger, Brian, and Spike along with the Foo Fighters and members of other bands such as the Darkness (including Rufus Tiger Taylor, Roger's son). But Spike is at stage right, in the shadows, even when "Somebody to Love" starts, and they film his _hands_ from _behind._ This is a man that's been a part of Brian's musical life longer than _Freddie_ was and it's like he's _built_ to be humble. So to see him out in front at this concert and other concerts on this tour just warms my heart.
A better performance of this was the Friday show, but although I know Queen has it on their channel, I don't know if the audio is any better. Someone did a rip of this very performance _and_ the audio from Live Magic (which was recorded from the board at this very concert), that's another one... but I do think you got the essence of this performance well. (Having said that, maybe see if you can find the Queen + Adam Lambert version of this song from Live Around The World, from Fire Fight Australia in February of 2020 just before COVID smacked us in the head. Just for contrast.)

Yes that was Spike who still works with the group and also on their separate careers. It's actually Dr Sir the profession always comes before the title which in this case was awarded by our new King, and it's Sir Brian who wrote this song, Wembley Stadium ( the old one) could hold 80,000 including everyone in the hospitality boxes, restaurants etc, as you'll often see 72,000 that's just the pitch and stands, I worked at various locations around the UK including this one as I'm in hospitality so know the numbers including other parts. John had Hilda Ogden on his T-shirt this will mean nothing too yourselves, however she was a character in Coronation Street, and he wrote I Want To Break Free, which is about oppression and the music video set up was Coronation Street, and the characters the group played were Roger Taylor then girlfriend idea, if you've not reacted too this you'll see why I've pointed it out. I would agree with you that Sir Brian isn't mentioned enough along with other people, how many in Rolling Stone and other organisations have someone who actually built his own Guitar with his dad from items around the family home, it's made up from parts of a mantlepiece, table, a few bits from his Mum's sewing and knitting basket, saddle bag for the arm and other interesting bits, there is a video with him talking about this and his other instruments and how he built in the sound he wanted right back in 1963 and helped by the Amp John made again from nothing, that was his degree at University Electronics and to this day Sir Brian uses Amps made by John

Brian, alongside Eddie, Alan Gratzer, Phil Chen and Fred Mandel, suggested that they record a cover of the theme from a Japanese sci-fi puppet series called Star Fleet. Never seeing Queen live (with Freddie ofc) is one of my big misses in life. So jealous of everyone who had the fortune of doing it! Totally agree with your take on Brians playing, he is underrated. Probably more in the US than in Europe, I would imagine.
Throwing in some new suggestions for the list:
    Sabaton
    Spiritbox
    Gloryhammer

Spike Edney came in about 1985 as keyboard player and another guitarist when needed. He was previously with The Boomtown Rats. Queen are touring now and will be touring in Japan in 2024. And Spike is still playing keyboards for them.

"Resurrection" by Brian May. Thanks for the review. I have to calm down before I write anything about RSM and the ranking of guitar players. They are not fans of Queen, never have been. Please read about how Brian and his father built Brian's guitar. Boomer Sooner.

Indeed. Coach saw Rolling Stone had him 26th or something...just way too low...no disrespect to anyone rated higher, of course. We realize art is very subjective.

  • @jackkilman8726
    @jackkilman8726 8 месяцев назад +4

I don't put much stock in rankings of "greatest" musicians. Music isn't a sport with performance stats you can measure, so such lists are completely subjective and, therefore, mostly meaningless. They always say more about the person or persons doing the ranking than about the musicians themselves. I don't need Rolling Stone or anyone else to tell me who my favorite musicians should be, and Brian May is definitely one of mine.

Hello again Coach...just to add that the Wembley concerts are here on RUclips posted by Alex, who has a great channel...the difference with what he has posted is the resolution of the vids...”Queen Live in Wembley 11th July 1986 (4K -60FPS)”..in this vid you are mostly on the stage with the band....the next night 12th July it shows a lot of the audience....both are brilliant...and you can also view the songs individually...you won’t be disappointed..the quality is amazing🤩

❤❤❤ I think by that time John Deacon had quietly had enough of touring, and may have been protesting with his choice of outfit. He was drinking heavily at that point and if it wasn't for the revival in Queens popularity on the back of Live Aid, I think he would have retired before then. History had other plans though.

Don't agree . . .after this John Deacon even played Bass on Freddie's opera collaboration with Montserrat Caballe. It was the "How Can I Go On" track on their "Barcelona" album. Maybe "Coach" will react to that.

I don't know if somebody has suggested it already, but I noticed that you mentioned your favorite guitarist was Eddie van Halen. And there is a Star Fleet Project which Brian recorded with Eddie. There is a robust song with the same name as the album, but the solo jamming between Halen and May is a great listen. Just a thought.

Nah, you maybe havent seen him in any list because he indeed isnt considered one of the best, maybe top 10 still living or top 50 overal. He is however considered one of the best rock music composers. His sound is very unique due to his guitar, nobody can match it. There are way better electric guitar players like Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Keith Richards, Gary Moore, Steve Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Howe from Yes (the flamenco guitar solo in Queen's Innuendo btw) or Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath.
Classical guitarists that entirely new level
