- After removing the last few parts like that thing, and the exhaust manifolds we were able to support the transmission, separate it from the block and then pull this nasty old engine out of Truck before the time consuming task of cleaning parts. I also test myself with a new type of adventure than I am used to...

I’m Amanda and Frank is my co-pilot. We are new to youtube but have lived in a van for 7+ years. I am a photographer and forager. We enjoy hiking, camping, climbing and being outside as much as we can. We have countless stories and lessons to share and look forward to becoming better videographers, thank you for coming along.

I don't know why that song got in my head, I've never intentionally listened to it.... I hope you are having a great day. YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
Doing new things takes on a extra level of learning when you film your life because you also have to learn how to film and edit the new thing you’re also figuring out how to do but I think there is value in sharing what it’s like to be a total newb rather than just sharing what comes easy. I’m grateful to be here learning and sharing it with you and really appreciate the kindness of this community. I hope you have a great day 💚
Can’t wait to watch your video later. I just sold my little car yesterday, now time to look for a Van myself.
That’s so exciting!!! Every van had pros and cons so don’t let anyone tell you what’s best unless they know about all your needs/wants in a van.
You're doing and amazing job!
@@tidelinetoalpine Thank you for the advice.
Thank you so much for sharing!!!
It takes a certain amount of grit to get into what you are doing. I have give your Dad a lot of credit...I wish my 3 daughters had gumption to take on a project like this. Your Dad seems really patient and easy to take directions from. Thumbs up Dad!
your dad and mom should be very proud of you, just for who you are !!!
You and I are definitely our fathers daughters… it nice we share so much of our mothers also. We’re both blessed with our families… so thankful you & I are grateful for our family
You are richly blessed to spend mechanic time with you Dad.
Never in my life would I have guessed that watching a video about an engine overhaul would be so good! You're editing and storytelling skills are universal across subject matter - amazing! In awe of this project and am stoked for you to be rounding the bend to 10K subs too ✨
Thank you!! I’m excited but also nervous to hit 10k because I plan to do my first live stream to celebrate
@@tidelinetoalpine Hooray! Looking forward to it!!
Frank supervises so well 😍 Awesome supportive dad.
A nature girl who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and knows her way around a tool box.....I like that....
Wow! What an undertaking. You are lucky to have your Dad to help you through the process and teach you along the way.
I don’t know why I am so interested in an engine swap. I will probably never do it myself, nor do I have any desire too.
Guess that’s just a sign of good storytelling and relaxing content. Thanks again Amanda, for the unique experience you provided 😃
Filming the removal of the engine, means ya got a reference on how it all goes back together! ✊️ 👍
I’ve already referenced my videos a few times 💯
The coffee spill was cute, but your face was priceless.
Your awesome, your parents did good!
Love this so much. I am probably as old as your dad lol, so much older than you. I grew up with 2 brothers, and my dad, who is 81 years young always taught me how to use tools along with my bro’s. We made several home made campers in the garage, and went over 350k miles in an old homemade camper in the 70s and 80s. He showed me girls can do anything and I enjoyed a career as an engineer. You and your dad rock 👍
Your Dad is just as amazing as you and Frank. Rock on Young Lady!!
Be very careful out there..I love you and Frank.💗💚
Wow, that engine swap is a huge undertaking and good on your dad for helping.
So glad your dad is teaching you his trade (my dad also taught me his trade) I am probably old enough to be your parent & I cherish that I had that communion with him… you’ll never regret it
I had a great chukel when the engine was coming out and caught tipping forward and fluids pouring on the floor... You go, "OH SHIT!" Dad says,..."Language..." It was so natural in absolute Dad way. I had a huge chukel!!
Hooray for your Dad!
This brings me a million memories of every time we have replaced/repaired our vw’s! Lol. Good luck 🍀
I’m glad you got your dad to walk you through this experience
you've got a great dad, so impressed with all that you do.
Always epic and always well shot, plus there’s Frank. Thank you for every upload.
your Dad's a great guy. Good on you. BTW .....love your perseverance keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing all that you do.
You and dad are so sweet together. Your both so chill. Cant wait for all the hard work to be over for you. Give Frank a hug for me.
Frank is my favorite nomad dog. I like his demeanor.
Great to see you are so willing to dive in and get your hands dirty! Well done
...but you still have to Wear Protective Gloves, because those Engine and parts Cleaners will dry and suck the oils from your hands, they are Toxic for a reason 🤔
Keep word is Carcinogen.
I could have been so helpful by swearing for you and supervising with Frank. I am impressed by your work. You are doing great.
Some shops won't even mess with vans because they are more difficult to work on . Awesome to see a girl getting after it . Most people can't even change a tire anymore 🤣
Kudos on all of this! The engine work, the filming, the editing, the bike trip. Very cool, Amanda. Your Dad rocks too. Of course Frank rocks also. Hi Frank! 🐕
I've done too many engine rebuilds & replacements to count & love doing it, but it's fun to kick back with a Number 2 & watch someone else do the work for a change. It's not possible but I'd love to be there to help.
Your father is a jewel, appreciate him
Thank you so much for making most of us smile. Every time I watch one of yours, I end up feeling better than when I started. Your dad is awesome too. “Truck”
Is getting a new heart. Don’t forget to get better brakes, With all mountains. Happy trails when your sexy van is back on the road. Good luck!
So awesome that you're tackling this project yourself! The knowledge gained from disassembling and reassembling all the ancillaries and sensors will be invaluable down the road in terms of troubleshooting any future issues. Write me down as one more vote against going back to carbs. There's a reason the industry moved forward. Go backwards and you'll get worse fuel economy, less-than-perfect fueling at partial throttle, and you'll become very familiar with cleaning out jets. Carbs seem simpler but your EFI system isn't complicated. Instead of spending money to go backwards, invest some time learning the in-and-outs of your EFI and its troubleshooting techniques and you'll be much happier down the road.
Boring story
... I agree with you MadGraph 💯, and you make a Valid Point! 👍
OMGoodness, you are such an adventurous lass. My eyes would have been all swollen up and my tear ducts run dry by now if i was doing this job. I'm enjoying this watch and will continue to watch as many adventures as you post. I guess videos on greasing balljoints and fixing tyres will be next, although I do like watching you and Frank negotiating the great outdoors. Thank you.
I miss my dad. He’s not dead. 78 years old, and helped me with a brake job when I was home briefly after a 6000 km journey to Uluru in Australia a few weeks back. I live 2000 kms away from him, in far North Queensland.
Really enjoying seeing your journey.😊✌️
I'm American but lived in Brisbane for several years in the 70s. I spent some time in Cairns and Innisfail, but never went further north. I loved it there and miss it very much. I often wish I had stayed. How far north are you ? I'm 77 now, too old to move back.
@@Mickju
I’m about half an hour south of Innisfail, in mission beach.
Only just noticed you’re left handed! World domination continues👍 From one Lefty Lucy to another, you’re doing an amazing job! Must be the expert supervision you’re getting…Frank’s clearly a genius❤️
That nasty old engine served its lifetime under the hood running you around the backcountry of Canada. Never disrespect the fallen.
It will rise again!!!! But I won’t be doing the work, gonna send it back for the core charge and let the professionals revive it.
LOL!!
Thank you for bringing us along … you & frank make this enjoyable. Btw, my dad brought me home a dog similar to frank when I was 7 … 1st of 3 in my life… that’s how I started watching your channel- so much like my 1st dog… I watch everything I find by you (& now FF also) love you lots Amanda
You are really going to know where everything is and how to replace/fix it when you get back on the road, that's going to give you so much more confidence.
You are doing a great job.
Frank is one cool dog.love all your video but this one is very awesome 👍☮️
So funny at 4.29 the left hand makes wench moves too, even when it's empty, lol
What a big job. It’s a good thing Frank’s supervising.
Great job guys!! I doing a house reno for my single daughter, family is so important!!!! ❤️
Impressive!
So rad that your parents are helping you out with a new engine. Excited to watch this next transformation to Truck.
I recently sold my 94 Chevrolet G3500. Due to health issues I was unfortunately unable to keep my G3500. I kept my van in tip top shape however, after my hands began to fail me, I knew it was time to pass it on to someone that needed a great van.
I ended up selling it to a small funeral home that needed a work van to haul tents, chairs etc.. to their services.
Sad to see my old friend go, I was glad to be able to help a small business out. They were excited to get the van and were thrilled at the condition of the van.
Best of luck with your engine swap. I look forward to seeing you, Frank and Truck go on many more adventures.
You are the bomb! Great job. I turned a wrench for a living so I know how hard you’re working. So happy for you …enjoy your time with your Dad.
I’ve been enjoying your videos but i really appreciate your attitude and approach to life in general. Thanks for sharing that. All the best.
10:30 It was very sweet how you setup your 'GM man' Dad to take a clean shot at Ford and Dodge.
Girl?! Is there anything you can’t do? You are absolutely amazing!! 🦋
I’m just so impressed with you all the time 🤩
You’re doing so great!! Loving the overalls and your supervisor ;) best of luck, Amanda!
I'm so stoked for you!!! Im also jealous of you doing it yourself. I'm currently getting a new engine installed in my Jeep Cherokee xj and even though I'm not doing any of the work, I'm still nervous. Lol :) for real though. I though about doing it myself, I have great tools and a small shop space... but I've never swapped a car engine before and I don't have anyone to help...so I wussed out and waited in a long line at a local mechanic. It's also gonna be $5000. :/
If you’re getting the engine and install for that price it’s really not too bad. I’m very lucky my dad is a mechanic and helping me on this because I would be terrified to do all the gaskets/seals/silicon business myself.
.... $5000, that's a little steep 🤔 Are you getting a "New" crate engine, or just another "Remanufactured" engine? which is just a Rebuilt engine from a Engine supplier, and the least expensive method. 👍
Engine supply houses are getting better, and so are their Rebuilt engines, they have to, technology has improved considerably over the last 2 decades. Engines should be rebuilt by specialists who have access to lathes, and years of experience ✌
Nice video, pulling an engine from any vehicle is incredibly difficult, it takes a lot of patience, dedication, money, labor, and back pain 🤔 That's cool, that you and your Dad are doing that together.
The biggest job, and the few times I rebuilt anything with my Dad, was when I needed to replace a rack and pinion steering assembly on my 1990 Lincoln Continental, on a gravel driveway. It was a Pain in the A$$.
You have to support and lift the engine from above, with an engine cradle, while lowering the engine subframe assembly, so that you can maneuver the steering assembly from underneath the vehicle. I don't own an engine cradle, so I made one from a 8"x8" piece of lumber, which spanned across the strut towers, and I used 2 heavy duty ratchet straps, wrapped around the engine, to support it from my "lumber cradle." 👍
It was back breaking work!
@@Texacait's just a rebuilt engine. I know, that estimate shocked me so badly I almost just gave up on the jeep....but I love it and I honestly need it. I live in Durango Colorado, things tend to be strangely expensive here anyway, and recently the world has been greatly altered by a global pandemic. Because of the chip shortages banging up the new car market so bad it's been trickling down into used cars too. Used cars are bonkers $$ here right now. So in abnormally high volumes, everyone is trying to fix old stuff. So now mechanics are all really backed up. (I've waited almost 3 months so far) plus supply chains are stressed and slowing down. Sourcing parts and finding a talented mechanic with time has been a wild dance. After a lot of looking and asking around, I'm realizing im lucky to be getting it done at all.
@@jerediswatching6563 ...I understand your situation. You gotta do what you gotta do. I got a broken down 92 Jeep Cherokee XJ, it died on me in March of last year. I have yet to work on it. I think the electronics in the Distributor are bad, the hall effect sensor for the Camshaft is gone bad. And last month, some idiot stole my Catalytic converter from underneath it, while parked at my friends house, here in Tyler Texas. 😠
I am so jealous 🥰 You have a great dad working together with you and teaching you so much about the engine while encouraging as you take it apart. I wanted to work on cars with my dad but he wouldn't do it. You will love it when you are out in the middle of nowhere while knowing everything about that engine. I can tell that you know how to relate to mechanics and that way of thinking. Can't wait to see the new engine. Cleaning is my thing. I would clean the heck out of the parts and the inside of the frame before putting it all back together. lol Sending lots of pets to sweet Frank. I hope you feel better after that bike ride Amanda. Thanks for sharing.
This reminds me so much of when I used to fix up my car with my dad (even down my precious dog as the supervisor :D) I really miss it now that we have more modern cars. Thanks for sharing your story, never forget that you are awesome!
I'm really enjoying these engine swap videos! Your parents are awesome for helping you out this way
Your outfit and the scene at 9:43 made my day lol! Just awesome :D
What a great video of your next awesome adventures. You are always changing it up. Frank is such a beautiful soul. What a blessing for me that you RUclips! Thank you Amanda and Frank!
I think you did great taking on your part of a short block swap.
looking forward to when the engine is in an running /take extra time to do a great job/you should have a great van for travels /that is a big job-it will be worth the hard work /be sweet an careful/thanks much
"Things" drive me nuts, too. Good job teaching, dad! Hi Frank! Hellishly good mechanical effort, Amanda. 👍😎🇨🇦🐾⚘⭐🎖
love him kicking the exhaust away at 4:00. feel that pain
Amazing progress and bicycling venture. Know the feeling yet great accomplishment and endurance
Hey girl, I don't call a 50km bike ride, after years of not doing it, very sensible. No easing into it. Just bam, let's go for it! Awesome but unwise lol. Nothing like tiring yourself out and causing yourself extra discomfort when you've got heavy and awkward lifting to be done on the van! Thanks to your dad for showing you the ropes with the engine works. Take care x
WOW! Thanks so much for sharing! You and your family are doing a wonderful job, and of course Frank is a wonderful supervisor! KUDOS for you and your dad taking on an engine swap, as it obviously is not for the faint of heart! Reminds me of my youngest daughter helping me change oil as a toddler :) Will never forget when she put her hand in oil trying to retrieve something... she loved the ratchet sounds, and got her a set later in life:) All the BEST to you, family, and friends! Cheers from south of the border :)
I too have a older van, a 1975 GMC Vandura. My home as well. I too will have to do a engine swap. Your video has been very informative. Your very lucky , your Dad seems to knows what he is doing.
Van guy Bob. Southern Ontario.
I literrally have Zero interest in engines, but when it's you, I am watching with nail-biting tension.... 😁😁😁
I don't know what was your old engine troubles but your mighty Vandura deserves it to me.
Such vans was well build in the 80s, build to last.
The only issue is the mpg as my old Dodge.
I wish you the bst for the rest.
Us dads... Are the best!!! Wouldn't you agree!!!
You are amazing. 👍. Frank is also a great supervisor 💗
you go kid! I admire you and your folks so much!
You are so lucky everything seemed to come apart easily! I thought for sure there was going to be a torch involved
Yay!
Enjoyed watching your video, lots of different pieces for sure. It's also an awesome project to watch and more than likely, even more fun when you get to share that with a family member... KUDOS to Dad or anyone else for watching. Beautiful route on your bike ride! I would suggest that if you are on the road for short sections, that you make sure you travel in the same direction as vehicles. I know that seems odd, but the law states that a bike follows all the same rules as a motorist. Thanks for sharing' I'll look forward to watching the remaining footage!
Built out with your dad is cool. Nice job!
Great video
Hi Amanda, you’re video’s are always so nice! Big hug to you and Frank❤️🤗
Wow Y’all Made Great Progress On Your Van Engine Swap !! 👍👍
EPIC BIKE RIDE !!!
Hey! It, s a learning , hands on, type of project! You will never forget! Good , job!😀👍
Usually , one or the other knees , hurt ,when I ride a bike....I would rather 🚶♂️! Lol!
Turkeys! :-) I know what you mean about things going by fast on a bike - I do enjoy cycling but I like the pace of walking for noticing what's around me.
I'm amazed you didn't encounter any seriously stuck or rusted bolts - I've experienced worse on younger cars (thinking back to my days of home car maintenance...). I broke a ratchet trying to get one off so I hold my breath every time you have to pull hard on yours. But it's great to see your progress and what's involved - so many parts!
Love you and love Frank sooo much! Just discovered your channel and hope to see more of you hiking and camping on your bike as well. 👍
Great job girl!!!
you rock... much respect for you to tackle a job like that.
Ya know if you take care of that TBI fuel system it will treat you good. I dont know if there would be any real benefit to backing down to a carb'd setup. It would tend to be more finicky especially as elevation changes, probably less efficient (and I am a HUGE fan of the quadrajet-- best carburetor ever built, period) and then you have to start butchering the fuel system/electronics of the van and it will never be undone. I would consider replacing O2 sensor(s), exhaust manifolds, MAP/TPS sensors, the fuel pump and FPR, any soft lines or o-rings, etc. And the thing will prove to be as reliable and efficient as youre gonna get with that thing.
Thanks for the advice. I’ve already relaxed all the sensors, fuel pump twice and the exhaust manifolds are in great shape. I agree with the elevation issues of a carburetor but I do like the idea of having less electronic components in my van... always a trade off eh! It looks like the TBI is getting some time to prove itself anyways 😉
@@tidelinetoalpine You could easily find an aluminum factory 4 barrel intake for that engine (for cheap) and put a quadrajet on there from a reputable source. It would run SO good but there are a lot of other mods that have to happen to do it right. New HEI distributor, etc and it will all have to be tuned by someone knowledgeable or it will be finnicky. And once you do that you're on your own because no manual will tell you how to check/set the timing, adjust the choke, troubleshoot issues, etc. Just saying. For the sake of simplicity and reliability, the factory stuff is not a bad idea. Very very rarely with any generation of vehicle new or old, is any sort of aftermarket modification really good idea in terms of reliability/driveability/quality. You will always sacrifice some of those things. ONCE in a while the factory blows it and there are things that MUST be done but the small block chevy is pretty darn bulletproof especially in bone stock form. Letting it breath easier (intake, and exhaust) and keeping quality fluids and filters on it are a great idea. Dont get me started because i'll never shutup!
@@tidelinetoalpine .... get a donor vehicle, with a v8 engine, that can fit in your van. Like out of a Chevy Scottsdale truck or a GMC Sierra, from a 1996 or newer vehicle. Swap all the electronics, plumbing, wiring, gauges, and the entire engine compartment 👍 have the engine rebuilt by your Dad, or a machine shop.
It'll be nice, because you'll have newer electronics, like OBDII, and parts will be readily available from any auto parts store.
@@tidelinetoalpine DONT CHANGE A THING. change the pickup coil in the dist. gut the cat. converter and its more reliable then a carb. and yes, I know its already done by now.
@@Texaca no, that EFI on a 96-later can be a pain.
Wow. What a project! Best of luck! Good stuff.
Very much enjoyed, this engine swap brought back some fond memories of engine swaps with my father, I am looking forward to the next video in this series, ooh btw I notice a few grease zerts that looked kind of dry, but I am sure your father noticed as well. atb.
I always called them nipples, that word is pretty new to my vocabulary but yes I grease them regularly and have some suspension work to do after this... 🤦🏻♀️
Awesome effort 👍.... I needed the engine pull part. As far as the rest🙄🙄🙄 have a nice ride 🤷♂️🤷♂️
If you ride more often the seat doesn't hurt. You are definitely going to feel the ride the next day and know exactly what the bike works that hiking doesn't. Biking is so much easier on your knees tho.
Wow, just found your channel, Love your Home, I have a 93 Vandura with a high top. It's a weekend and vacationer, Vanlife seems super interesting and ultra peaceful at the same time... looking forward to more Vids and watching more of your back catalogue.
This is awesome. Congrats on the new engine. Me and my wife got a van given to us by her parents. It is a 2001 Chevy Astro. Its pretty much gutted but it needs a bit of body and engine worth though.
Good job on your engine swap. Keep your tbi carb, they are super easy to work on and the parts are cheap.
I truly miss and frank in the wild .
Coolio! I can remember waaay back when I was young that you could buy a rebuilt Chev 350 for $800... I'm guessing they cost quite a bit more than that now?
Yeah... ~$4000CDN for the short block (with gasket kit), shipping and special break on oil 😅
Gah! I'd be SO lost. WTG Amanda, hope you are on the road soon!
You Rock ! You impressed me again !
great video. thanks
cool and great dad, keep up the gud work guyz..mabuhay from phillipines..
Many years ago I had a similar van to yours, when I swapped engines the old transmission lasted about a week with the new engine. Just couldn't take the power of the new engine. I'm not familiar your earlier van projects so I don't know if your transmission has been rebuilt or replaced before this engine swap, just be aware of this as a possibility. Good luck, awesome project.
You are amazing!! Way to go!! You act like you are feeling good! How is Frank? He looks like he has the hang of supervising all things Truck and all things you! Hugs!!
Love this video i miss doing this stuff with my dad
