Phrozen Sonic Mini: 3D Resin Printer Set Up, Use, Safety, and First Impressions Review

- I needed a 3D resin printer with a better interface than the Wanhao D7 I've been using. So I decided on the Sonic Mini.
Phrozen's Sonic Mini is a budget monochrome masking LCD 3D resin printer. And now that it's here I've gotten around to taking it out of the box and writing a review of it's features and my impressions.
The first print (as you'll see at the end of the video) didn't go well. That was down to the cure time being a bit too aggressive for the Siraya Tech Blu resin I'm attempting to use.
I'm covering design quality, printer setup, 3D resin safety, and a first print attempt.
In the future I'll probably be doing a teardown of the printer along with some convenience modifications such as chamber heating and (if necessary) modifying the base for UV resistance.
Also, there don't appear to be too many profiles for resins available. I'm aiming to remedy that in a print quality article and video to follow.

I liked how this review was done. Thank you for taking the time to post this.
You're welcome! I appreciate the feedback.
Thanks for this awesome review! Do I need to calibrate the printer after every use? Or would once during the initial setup after unboxing would be suffice?
You'd probably want to home them in when the characteristics of the printer change. Make sure it's functioning properly when the bed's moved on the Z or the resin's different at least.
Would like to see mod for chamber heating. I've bought Sonic Mini4K I would like to print in the basement where temperature is too low for that.
Yes! I've had two designs I wanted to make. One's an ultra-budget candle warmer and cardboard build and the others fire retardant clear plastics and a warmer cartridge.
Where do you have the video of the Chitubox configuration for this printer? the best you ever had ... THANK YOU
There' s no video of settings, I'm not sure how that'd work. I haven't gotten to work with the printing on it much or add a heating chamber yet (which is necessary for me to use the printer, unfortunately).
You can find a few settings at PCBurn.com here pcburn.com/phrozen-sonic-mini-3d-resin-settings/ and the Google Doc spreadsheet here docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1crvzMnt_8NJXAsABinoIhcOjE8l3h7s0L82Zlh1vkL8/edit#gid=0
Great info. I am looking for some kind of mat like you have under the printer. Where can I get something like that?
They're sold as "silicone repair mat" if your referring to the blue one. Here in the USA they go for around 7 to 20 depending on size and are available at your finer Chinese importers (Amazon, Ebay, or Aliexpress)
No I am talking about the grey mat on the right side of the printer
That's a cutting mat. Available from the same places online and most craft/hobby/sewing stores. They're a little more common in green.
what do dyou do with the resin that remains in the tray after a print ?
Either store it again or put it in a metal vessel and cure it for disposal.
Thanks for the video! I just had mine show up, and I’ve been wondering, how much ventilation would you recommend? I could put it in the garage, or I could also put it in one of the extra rooms we have which would be nicer.. I have a airbrush station, which has a filter and a fan with a pipe you stick to your window to take out the aerosols in the air. Would that be good enough for ventilation, or should I get a fan also? Or do I need more then that?
Personally I don't like the fumes. I don't trust inhaling what I'm assuming is a UV reactive solvent, either. I use mine indoors but in a dedicated area and have a OVC/Acids mask on when I'm working with it. And the area has dedicated filtration.
The other location consideration is the temperature. The resin really wants it to be above 80F (30C?) to drip properly and evacuate the model into the vat as it cures.
PCBurn! Ah ok! Inside it’s around 70 degrees but our garage is around 10 degrees warmer, so that’s probably the best spot for the summer atleast. I’m not sure about winter as it drops down to -10 , with the garage being about 40 degrees in the cold
Yea, I was having trouble with 70F specifically. My workshop hovers there most of the year and it was a bit too cold for the quick curing time, I think.
You put the build plate on backwards...
I did fiddle with it a bit. If memory serves it'll only function if it's in properly; reversing it causes the plate to stick out too far.
try $249 ....$329 with shippinmg.
It's been out of stock and unlisted since last week. They had been 250 when Amazon had them.
@@PCBurn the shipping from phrozen is like $70 bucks.. thats the problem now. :[
Oh yea. Even before they were intermittently stocked at Amazon. Now they're dropping priority on everything that isn't medical or food.
I assume they'll be in stock at Amazon again whenever they slow boat them over (and process them).
