My husband calls sales shopping "saving ourselves broke". I think that describes it perfectly!

Just last week, I finished throwing out about 85% of what I owned. My husband was concerned because he didn't understand why. Neither did I. I just knew that the neatly packed away clutter had to go. This was my fourth time purging my home within the past eight months. I finally came up with a defenative answer...i want simplicity. And it feels good☺

I recently went into Hobby Lobby when they were doing their 75% off sale and figured I'd probably come out with a few bags of stuff. I have simplified my house down so much by your videos and Josh Becker's videos that I walked out of the store with nothing because there was nothing I needed and it was just such an awesome moment

I don't go there often because everything is appealing to me, and I go with my husband to keep me sane! I've been simplifying my house as well, and it's getting easier to walk around the store and enjoy what I see and comment on how cute or pretty something is (my husband is so sweet and humors me - lol!), but leave it there. Yay!

When we watch tv with our kids and the adds come on, we turn down the sound and we all try to guess what they are trying to sell us! Making our kids aware of marketing is also so important so they grow up not falling into the same trap.

When my kids were little, lots of toy and sweet companies would advertise during children's TV time after school. My kids would come to me saying they wanted this or that. (They were not short of toys). I watched the ads with them and explained to them that really, what these companies were most interested in was not them, but their money. They soon caught on.

This list idea really works. I’m a govt contractor and during the shutdown in Jan I really couldn’t buy anything beyond essentials, like the basic food items we needed. So I would write the things I wanted to buy on a list in my phone “for later”. Theres a few things Ive bought since that actually were on the list for a while that I kept coming back to, but a LARGE % of things I don’t even want anymore, or I found another way besides buying a new thing. I was using shopping as a fix for everything (including my emotions) and this broke that habit for me. Pretty amazing.

I take the pictures for my kids too, but not for their Christmas list. I have found that taking a picture of my child with the item, fulfills their need to "consume" and then they don't actually want the item. ❤️ I also have been utilizing a "wait list" although I didn't realize that's what it was. Just a notebook that my husband and I "dream" about what we want to buy, and it's crazy how even 48 hours can completely change your perspective about what you think you want/need.

You make a very good point about sales and emergencies. When you buy things on sale, you are still spending money, often money you don't really need to spend. If you learn to spend more of your money in old fashioned cash, you can stand right in the store, look at the price you would pay for that item, then take the money you would have spent on it and put it in an envelope you carry with you when you shop. I've done that with the goal of saving for some fun activity you want to do. It's so rewarding to reach that goal and know you did it by NOT spending on frivolous things. I get the same rush putting it in the envelope as I'd get spending it, then again when we go do that fun thing! It's a win-win!

So thanks to you here’s what I’ve done . . . Had a really nice area rug in my living room. But it was a constant dirt and hair collector. Hubby and I had to be vacuuming it every few days and I’m really challenged to vacuum because of health issues. So I decided, the lovely decor piece was not as important as lessening this one household chore that was unnecessary. So I convinced my hubby to sell it. Done! Hardwood floors without an area rug - much easier to keep clean and one less task to do. Thanks Dawn for the inspiration

Thank you so much for addressing how intense advertisers are! When decluttering I always feel so guilty about wasting money and feeling like this super materialistic gluttonous person for buying things I don’t need when so much of the world lives with so little. The difficult emotions makes me not want to do it but then if I don’t nothing changes. Being able to just admit I fell into an advertisers trap is a much less shameful way to look at it. I did as you, anything that we did not use or need was donated, I didn’t even want to sell, because their is a great charity here in the next town, that all proceeds go to Battered women who are in abusive relationships. Did my heart good.
The thought entered my mind all the money, I wish I had it back... life is different now, nothing comes into my home unless it has a purpose, I shop very intentionally....

When I am shopping, and find something that interests me, I try not to buy it right away, even if it is the only one left. I tell myself that if it is meant for me, it will be there if and when I return. If it is not there when I return, it wasn’t meant for me.

It's so much of what I've said to myself before and some extra insights as well, but hearing it from someone else is really helping me get the reigns of de-cluttering and simplifying our lives. Thanks for this video! One thing that I find useful sometimes is to just carry an item around the store for a while. Sometimes, especially with home decorating stuff, it's just so pretty that I want to touch it and own it. Carrying it in my hands (not my cart) for 5-10 minutes feels satisfying, like it is mine, but then the literal weight of it in my arms starts to feel like a burden, and I can put it back on the shelf. I enjoyed it briefly, then returned it. I treat the store like a zoo, or a museum: visit, enjoy, but the stuff doesn't get to come home!

Just last night we went through large kitchen items and got rid of three more (waffle iron, ice cream maker and juicer! All going to that little church today!). Feels so good. And the loss of trees! We lost many big ones in that weird mini-tornadoes storm back in September and it was amazing how personal it felt. Neighbors agreed...it was more emotional than we could even recognize at the time. We lost a few oaks that were hundreds of years old. Ugh. So sorry. It feels better when it's all cleaned up. But that takes time too...

I don’t need a 30 day waitlist.... when shopping online, I add things to my cart. If I still “need” it that evening, I will give it another consideration. I am getting much better at NOT buying!

Yes, try not to be too hard on yourself! Life goes by to quick to spend a lot of time on regrets. Even if you make the same mistake more than once, still not a reason to stay in the regret state.

You may talk about this too on another video. When making a purchase ask yourself, "Do i need this or do i want this?" If it is need then buy it, if you have 7 pair of pants already then it is a want. Don't buy it.
    This help me a bunch!
My apt is still messing and i have tried to apply some of these tips. Did the kitchen one years ago. That helped some. Still cant get others to wash their dishes. Not stern enough i guess. Lol.

I have found that the longer I stay in a store browsing, the less I buy! Most of the time, I end up putting everything back and only buy the essentials. One thing that helps me stay focused is to take a picture of the needed items. Then I don't forget why I went to the store.

As always great advice. I love the 24 wait. I love to shop by mail and will mark everything I want in a catalog, wait a day, go through again... and wait another day. By the third run though I've dwindled it down to 1 or two items from the original zillion and I realize, I really don't need the remaining items on the list - catalog hits the recycle ♻️ bin! Win Win for my bank balance!! And I got the fun of virtual shopping.

Dawn - this whole video is so important for people to see. I especially appreciate what you said about marketers and not being so hard on ourselves. There are so many items I wish I hadn't bought that have gone to Goodwill. Oh well. HARD lesson learned. I'd love for younger people to learn this earlier than I did in life (I'm 56). We've always been on the frugal side, but I've still managed to spend hard earned money on things I didn't need or end up liking. I'd also like to add that I buy a lot online, and I'm pretty sure marketers must know that most people won't get around to returning things. I do. It's a pain in the butt, so I've gotten pretty good about making sure I really want something because I HATE returning things. That's helped me a bunch.

We are currently getting organized for a garage sale -- a stressful endeavor indeed! I would just donate all our items except we are struggling financially so have told the kids our garage sale money will be to do some fun things with them this summer. That said, your video is so spot on. Our house is filled with unnecessary things! Can't wait to get rid of more and more and more of it! And whatever doesn't sell at the garage sale will either be donated to the thrift store or given away on our local buy nothing site. It is not coming back into our house! Thanks for the inspiration Dawn! Love your channel!

For me, almost all of my purchases have been trying to "problem-solve" something to make my house run smoother. I think what happens is that there is multiple logic coming from within ourselves. For example, when I see the electric bill, I want to not use my oven, but when I have to store an Instant Pot and Air fryer and Toaster Oven, I want to get rid of those and just use the oven.

a pretty fond memory i have, which is also embarrassing at the same time and a great example of how marketing can pull on your emotional strings is this: when I was in high school, there was an ad about hair gel that supposedly had pheromones in it. It would attract girls. So, naive teenager that I was, I bought that hair gel, even while i was skeptical and even while I knew my parents would tell me that it doesn't work anyway. So I hid it from view. Made sure no one could see I bought this embarrassing thing. All because the ad had played on my emotions (I had had girl trouble right before that, so thats likely why).
Now I can look back at that and smile. Good times.

Wow! Just yesterday I saw an ad for that wonderful grapefruit method cleaner. The ad said buy in bulk to save money! My frugal mind latched onto “save money!” I decided to think about it, then I saw your video this morning. It occurred to me that I should do the math... duh. I would save 29 cents per bottle. What!? Why would I store 8 bottles to save $2.32! Thank you so much for helping me with this new mindset! I’m able to walk out of a thrift store without buying anything, and that is huge for me 😊.

The take a pic and wait trick really works! I took a pic of every Fav Craft Store decoration for a new baby nursery I wanted during the first round and felt indulgent because it is something I could have had, and then went home without buying anything, deleted pics i didnt like or were too much in the next couple days- while i sat in the room- then went back to buy the few items that fit and used them all! Likely cheaper than any sale... (but like you said there are always sales!!). I am not a big clothing shopper but I would bet it would work too

  • @mljs9245
    @mljs9245 5 лет назад

I'm so thankful that so many places have good return policies! Often the sparkle wears off within a day or two - before I get a chance to remove the tags or use an item. I then return it. Of course it would be better if I didn't buy it in the first place, but baby steps.
I like the idea of a holding list. If I still like something in a week (if I still remember that I 'needed' it in a week), then I can consider buying it.

Good morning from North Carolina! So sorry to hear about your trees. I love your idea of a wait list. I do that with on-line purchases especially. Each new season or event brings about a feeling of 'what things do I need to get ready'. Writing everything down and then giving yourself a cool down period helps your vision clear and you can see what you really do need, if anything. I also find just staying out of the stores really helpful. I used to love to run in and browse but as I'm aging a bit and my knees don't like the hard floors of most stores I find myself asking is it really worth it to go in here? And, I think about the cost not only to my pocketbook but to my knees and I say, nope, I can do without it. :-) Teaching your children about marketing strategies is really helpful. They can understand more than you think. Also keeping them away from as much advertising as possible helps too. Turn the sound off on commercials. Enough of that. Keep on doing what you're doing, it's really necessary and you are such a good encourager.

I like to shop at stores like TJ Max and Marshall’s. So a lot of times if I don’t buy something when I see it, it’s gone the next day. So my tactic is to look at it while I’m in the store, I don’t put it in my cart at that time, and if I can’t get it out of my mind while I am in the store, then I go back and buy it. It’s amazing how many times I’ve walked out of the store empty handed. The key is to not put it in the cart! I also have a rule that for each time I buy an item, I get rid of 2. Last year I had a yard sale to sell some of the previous impulse purchases, and I made $300 in one day just by minimizing what I already had. The money was used to buy Christmas presents for family.

Apps (games for example) on the Internet also analyze how marketing works. Free in the beginning and as you begin to enjoy them it becomes more difficult and without purchasing their upgrades, you get stuck at certain levels. There is control in that; it’s done on purpose. Marketing at its best!

I love your Chanel..... I think I have always kept a well organized home, (but spent my weekends cleaning)!
I was told I was going to be laid off from work but continued to work for additional three month. From the day I was told I would go home and say to my shelf why do I have this, why did I buy this, I hate this, so I started a pile in a corner of one my rooms and ever adding items to the pile Daly. And on Saturday all those things went to Good Will.
I was buying things to buy things that had no meaning to me, was not enjoying the item nor was it enhancing my life.
We are so busy working we don’t even realize the things we are buying or enjoy the things we are buy.
It took this old gal years and years to learn a very valuable lessen.

The wait list is a great idea! Also, if you're in a store like Walmart (with buggies), walk around for approx. 1/2 hour with your 'soon to be' purchases as if you already own them... then when you get to the cashier you'll already know you don't want or need half of the clothes or unnecessary items in it. I learned this at ValuVillage in Canada.

As I contemplate the thought, "I don't want to miss out on a good deal!" (Something I've fallen prey to before) I remind myself that Jesus supplies all my needs! And I remember all the creative and humorous ways He's done it in the past and that helps me hold out.... Also, a conscious walk through the house before I go shopping helps me see how much I already have! Then all the products around me at a store turn into items that I am intentionally trying to keep out of my house lest they clutter it up again! Helps me only get what I really went to get
