      I think that's kind of the point of the game. I got the sense that Jesse didn't think to wield her directorial power in that way because she was too consumed in self doubt and her own insecurities.
      That said, they could've done better than "Let's make more HRA's even though they've saved as many people as those devices can save."

      @@pretends2know the game is great but it stays strangely disconnected from emotions. I never had a moment were any of the characters made an emotional impact. Design sin wise for me would be the blotchy red that took over your screen when low on health, I know it's meant to be thematic, but it was rather hard to see the red enemies throwing red projectiles in areas with red lighting to denote enemies were near, combined with largely black areas combined with red, it was even harder most of the time.

    there's a handful of in-universe for some of the oddities in the game but I guess you could consider it a weak point of you don't read any of the memos. basically the bureau has a perceptive field that causes normal people to ignore the building. you can only see it if you are "selected" to join the bureau. basically, you have to be crazy.
    take control was by old gods of asgard, not lords of the fallen. there's a secret room that has a song by them playing.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this game but it's easy to see why you wouldn't enjoy it. despite my enjoyment of the game, I don't typically recommend it to anyone.
    and yeah Jesse is a very dry character, it felt like she was just a vessel for you to talk to the more interesting supporting cast characters. it's a shame though, the actress did a studio tour of remedy as a promotion for the game and was full of more life and energy in that 10 minute video than the whole game.

    So many of these sins were simply explained in the story.
    "It doesn't serve the narrative" How does it not? The light cord is used because very few people would ever pull the string 3 times in a row. This is why that item went unnoticed for so long. Eventually, they found it and now the feds use it to hide doorways, kinda like a vault. Should it really get a sin just because you put minimal effort into understanding the lore?
    Why would she demand all answers upfront when this shadow-fed organization kidnapped her brother in the first place?
    "WOW THE PEOPLE WHO KIDNAPPED MY BROTHER JUST SUDDENLY MADE ME CEO, NOTHING FISHY HERE, BETTER JUST GO DUMB AND TELL THEM EVERYTHING! COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE A TRAP!"
    Like, why would you NOT question loyalty after all that?
    "That's not how you talk to your boss." Pretty sure that's the head of security, so in this case, she can talk like that to her boss since it's in regards to everyone's safety. It's literally her only job there. It's sorta the same reason why a CEO can't tell an OSHA guy to just fuck off.

      What I certainly will not argue though is the fact that the ash tray maze is the most awesome part of the game. Similar to that performance of those rock and roll brothers (don't remember the names) at the end of Alan Wake.
      The mystery of it all and the fact that they don't just right out tell Jesse everything she needs to know instantly is what makes the game worth playing. She thinks about those things in her own way. Like everyone. It would be pretty boring if they would do that. Alot of strengths if you ask me and not so many weaknesses. That is why this video isn't longer. He couldn't come up with more. Or any in fact. It is just that good of a game. Since the story is so fascinating. You forget the bad details.
      Also the fact that you literally never really do find out who the janitor is in the end is pretty awesome in itself! Very thought through and interesting character if you ask me! Would regret not having played the game. Just to seen how he plays out so to say.
      There is also the Foundation dlc which adds some additional post endgame stuff so you don't get bored. Not alot but still it is interesting. The objects of power you need there are very interesting.
      All in all very decent game with much more strengths than weaknesses. I would personally give it a 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5. There were a few things that stretched out the game a bit too much. But not alot.

    In response to a couple of these sins.
    Sin #4: Jesse only came to The Oldest House in response to Polaris basically telling her that she should. She knew a bit about the Bureau beforehand, but I don't think she fully expected what she found. You could still sin this as "protagonist arrives precisely when they're needed due to plot" though.
    Sin #9: The noncombatants that the Hiss take over can be seen floating in the air repeating the Mantra. They don't know how to fight, so the Hiss uses them mostly as support. The Hiss likewise knew that the Bureau wouldn't go down without a fight, so it needed soldiers. As for why the Bureau needs that many security guards and field teams... well, they do deal with supernatural monsters, and The Oldest House is both extremely big, can reach other dimensions, and their HQ.
    Sin #15: While it's never explained properly (and therefore still a sin), it's heavily implied that Polaris somehow got Jesse into The Oldest House. Note how you can't actually return to the opening area of the game. Polaris could get her in, but she can't (or won't) get Jesse out.
    Sin #25: The Bureau didn't know what it was dealing with. The typical thing to do would be to try to lock down each sector and isolate the threat. However, the lockdown only had the effect of splitting up the remaining Bureau staff, as the Hiss either struck the entire Bureau near-simultaneously, or was simply able to bypass the lockdown. If the latter, it's still possibly a sin; the Bureau should realistically be able to manage most supernatural nonsense, even if this was an Out of Context Problem for them.
    Sin #29: At first, Jesse didn't trust the Bureau staff... and frankly, she probably realized that the Hiss was some kind of existential threat the first time it tried to take over her mind. It's only after she starts to bond a bit with Pope that she opens up to her about Dylan, and learns that only a couple people would have access to that information.
    Sin #32: There's two possible explanations: One is that the HRAs have a finite lifespan and need to be replaced. The other is that some people were in safe rooms when the Hiss washed through The Oldest House (either they had a few seconds/minutes to run, or they were just in the right place at the right time). The latter is much more likely, as Dylan later mentions that there would be some human resistance if the Hiss escape to Earth.
    Sin #36: It's possible that the Hiss have the ability to move through the Oldest House using means that bypass the Firebreaks and the lockdown. Additionally, Dylan is an extremely powerful psychic in his own right. Granted, Remedy never actually shows this, but there's several in-game reports about it.
    Sin #50: The HRA cell wouldn't stop Dylan from breaking out under his own power (terrifyingly powerful psychic). I assume he wouldn't kill them because he'd either use some weird Hiss power to simply teleport away (Jesse can do something similar), or he'd simply walk out and ignore all the humans. As for why he'd do that... Once he fully unleashed the Hiss and got control of the Board, the Hiss would win. He wouldn't want to kill them since he'd soon be able to possess them after getting out of the Oldest House.

    A couple of nitpicks/corrections:
    The Oldest House updates all the portraits of Director Trench to portraits of Director Faden sometime between Jesse picking up Excalibur/The Service Weapon, and you next seeing those portraits (again). Why shouldn't the same update also update all bureau personnel on their new Director?
    With scale models, while you might stick to a table-top version if you're limited to a single conference room, if you have the space to set up a bigger model with more details, why not? The limiting factors on the value of increasing the scale are how able you are to take in the entire model (or any significant wide features of it) at once, and how fine a detail you're able to replicate from the original (no point making the model bigger if you're not getting any additional details as a result). The, what, 1/10? 1/20? scale model in the game can still be appreciated from overhead, and has a reasonable detail level.

    • @thennafish
      @thennafish 4 года назад +10

      Also another nitpick correction that's hard to notice: The lockdown isn't referring to the front doors Jesse walked through. When she enters the building and goes upstairs, there is no elevator there, but when she goes and talks to Ahti, the building changes and the path back disappears and the one forward leads her back to where she came from, now with an elevator. The lockdown is that the entrance to the building (the elevator) was literally removed.

    I've been trying to figure out why/ how Pope knew Jesse was the new Director. And then it dawned on me. There is a recording of Pope interviewing Jesse. My guess is Trench made a decision that she would be the new Director after his passing, and telling the bureau about it. And Jesse has memory suppressions of ever talking to her. It's kind of astounding how coy that was because Pope is keeping stuff from Jesse... Her boss

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 4 года назад +8

      There's an even simpler solution: it's part of the weirdness of The Oldest House - the same way all the directors' portraits around the building get updated to Jesse by the time you reach them (unless you believe the maintenance department has a stockpile of prepared portraits, and the manpower to go around replacing them, often in Hiss-infested regions).

    I really shouldn't watch EEW for games I've actually played, because it exposes how many things Dartigan apparently just didn't catch. And granted - if you're doing this for a one-off sins video you might not bother tracking down every collectable. However, a lot of the questions he brings up as sins are answered. For instance, the comment about the building not being secured if anyone can walk in. Jesse was able to walk in because Ahti manifested an elevator which doesn't exist. Go back after getting the Service Weapon and you'll find it gone. What was Jesse's plan? Nothing, but Polaris did have one. She stayed with Dylan most of the time, then left him to reconnect with Jesse. There's an audio log of a psych session with her, where Jesse explains that Polaris wants her at the Bureau "at a very specific time." It's also made pretty clear that Polaris does talk, just not in any way that's exposed to the player. Jesse doesn't just assume what Polaris wants, but seems to know, and even gets information from Polaris that she otherwise couldn't have had. Remember - you can't find The Oldest House if you're not looking for it, and the only reason Jesse is looking for it is Polaris.
    And that's just a few of them. Not to say the video sucks because of it - certainly not. However, it does detract from the experience when questions are presented as "gotchas" when answers to them are often plainly told to the player in no uncertain terms. We're not talking about whether Jesse created the Slide Projector as a few clues allude to, whether Dylan was real or was created, whether Alan Wake came up with the words that the Hiss chant, etc. That's up for debate because the game's coy with the narrative. But other answers are literally told to the player in plain text.

    • @The_B_Button
      @The_B_Button 4 года назад +6

      Shouldn't some of these be made more obvious then? You shouldn't have to track down every collectible for a plot that makes sense or doesn't have logic holes that aren't filled without going for 100% imo.

    • @pretends2know
      @pretends2know 4 года назад +5

      In my experience with this and CinemaSins, there really isn't enough time do the research to catch all the nooks and crannies and hold to a schedule. That said, Dartigan didn't seem all that into this one considering he waited a year for this, and it shows a bit beyond the point where he just flat out said it. I'm glad he did it, but I feel like I wished on a cursed monkey paw when I wished for him to do it.

    • @pretends2know
      @pretends2know 4 года назад +3

      @@The_B_Button How much plot relevant information you put into the collectibles and how much players should track down is an entirely subjective expectation. The thing with Control is there's not really that much that needs to be tracked down, unlike... Arkham City. But that's honestly because there really isn't much plot to this game in the first place.

    • @Malidictus
      @Malidictus 4 года назад +7

      @@The_B_Button As I said - some things are vague, especially since the game toys with the question of what is and isn't real (the answer is it's all real and the narrative was just being cute). However, some things are pretty explicitly told to the player. Take the "How did you get in through the lockdown?" where Dartigan goes on to ponder why the Hiss haven't gotten out. The game explains this directly. Jesse admits that "the janitor let me in" and the player's experience confirms this. Jesse passes through a wall with no elevators. Ahti tells her to take the elevator. Backtrack, there is now an elevator which leads directly to the Director's office. Get the gun, go back - there is no elevator. And if that isn't obvious enough, the game spells out that Ahti is basically god via the Walkman, not to mention all the side comments about him. And that's just one thing.
      And mind you - you don't have to go for 100% in order to get a good feel for the story. I checked my achievements and I'm sitting at something like 60% of all collectables. Just picking up the ones immediately in your path is enough to put the plot together. That audio log I mentioned of Jesse's psych session? That's sitting in plain sight in a narrow hallway that the player has to path through in order to get to the Ordinary model. You COULD miss it, of course, but I'd argue you'd have to deliberately ignore it for that to be the case. It's not hidden behind a breakable wall or a skill check puzzle. It's in the way. The same goes for Darling's presentations - multiple times they will auto-play as soon as the player enters a space with an obvious jingle, so the only way to miss most of them is to deliberately ignore them.
      Or I guess the other way is to have played the game a year ago, forgotten most of it and thrown together a script over the footage :) And sure, I get that channels like these work on a schedule so you can't really expect them to 100% a game. Of course. Few people could, with Control, given how much crap there is to read and how much of it is listless unfunny bullshit. I didn't NEED to read about a guy who thought he'd invented a language to talk to fish. But certain basic aspects of the game I'd argue players do need to make an effort to at least keep track of. There's a fine line between making fun of video game storytelling and just not paying attention. My original point was that I only really notice this when I've actually played the game in question, as is the case with this and Fallen Order. It makes me retroactively wonder how that might have affected the videos for titles I've not played.

    Honestly, the Alan Wake expansion explains away a lot of the continuity errors, like how people who haven't met Jesse suddenly know that the Hiss are called the Hiss before meeting her. It's suggested that Alan actually wrote everything that happened in Control into existence. That, coupled with the fact that Alan is kindof a hack ripoff of Stephen King, explains a lot of the plot contrivances.

    I get personal preference in games arent the same but if a game is of great quality, even if its not of a genre of game you enjoy; it takes a really deluded person to consider it shitty.
    I knew this segment was gonna be full of BS. However I expected the reasons to be that theres too much knickpicking happening to justify this segment's length. Goin in, I didnt expect that a good portion of the sins would be based on the fact that the critic didnt understand the game. Especially details from said game that are spelt out. Ie: In the very beginning, its established that Jesse has been looking for the Bureau for a long time but its only because of Polaris that she found it because the building is hidden from those who arent purposefully looking for it & as Jesse is an outsider, she wouldnt know where to look on her own. That said, Jesse and Pope (who btws, you got confused with Marshall); both realized that to get into the lobby, Polaris helped get past the lockdown. However, the elevator you go in to get leave the lobby sector, that only opened up after talking with Ahti which means, he also helped get you past the lockdown too. Something he does again when you first head to Maintenance Sector. Yet in spite of this bein spelt out, the critic questions why the Hiss didnt escape the Bureau when it was a walk in the park for Jesse to get in. And that is just one example. I could list others like how the Ordinary AWE had multiple dimensional trips involved before the projector was turned off & afterwards; that the entire dump landfill from the town (which the model was of the majority of and made in such a way to see the different sections effected by the AWE and what would be effected by what degree & thus is of a good size); had their own wings in Containment Sector; and Pope's boss bein on later expeditions would also give plenty of reason why she'd know of that AWE. Her knowledge of which, you questioned in spite of it too bein spelt out ect. Point is, dont review & sin something without having a good nough understanding of it.
    All in all, this segment is full of shoddy reviewing work & knickpickery to justify a longer length than it actually needed for an excellent game which you cant seem to get that in spite of different taste, doesnt mean its bad. And thus , your credibility as a reviewer plummeted.

    6:52 I feel like this sin can be easily explained by the janitor who as you stated in the beginning is basically god of tge oldest house. He simply let jessie in at the start with some room manipulating so we never Actual got to see what a real lock down looks like from a non main character point of view. Plus the oldest house kinda has a aura surrounding it to keep people from entering so the actual front doors being locked or not dont matter.

  • @beckelmore8448

    I wish the sins were actually, ya know, issues. It seems like a lot of the takes on this channel are actually explained in game but he ignores this for more (for lack of a better term) clickbait sins. I mean, even sinning the title? What else could Control really be called? Polaris? Oldest house? Nah. Every level of the game is fundamentally about control. Control points aren't called that because lends to the title, the title lends to the game. Jesse has to learn control over herself, her feelings, ambitions, the hiss, polaris, the staff, and the oldest house itself.
    It's just sad to see someone who didn't pay enough attention pretend like the game is majorly flawed. It isn't. It's one of the better games I've ever played.

    I absolutely love CONTROL. It definitely has its faults don't get me wrong but it's a darn good game though I do think control has way too many obvious likeness to quantum break. I think remedy should make a new Alan wake next, then could do a cross over game that has Jesse and Alan wake. As for some of the sins, for example the sin for how Jesse becomes the director is technically incorrect. The gun chooses the director. Tons of people have attempted to become the director and the gun basically kills who it thinks isn't worthy. Jesse of course doesn't know this, she is just a pawn of the gun (all of this is in several different records) also your comment about how it's pointless to get more HRA since people who weren't wearing them during the attack are already turned is not correct, the safe rooms protected people from the hiss apparently so they could give people who have either outrun the hiss or hidden in safe rooms hra but it isn't necessarily black and white if the safe rooms truly can protect people from the hiss. I do fully agree though with some of the sins though like how does everyone know she's the knew director already when no type of announcement is made, or how Jesse's character is a bit bland which is true in my opinion. I like her character but she is definitely bland. The whole motel situation is a missed opportunity for the writers for control, its a neat situation and fits with the whole weirdness and randomness for the game but ya, having to ring a bell couple times and just move a chair and photo is lazy. They could have done a lot more, made it a harder puzzle or something. I agree that Jesse's back story with her town "ordinary" would make a good game, though I don't think it would have been better than control but would make a great prequel or massive dlc/expansion. Still, your video has good points, I enjoyed it.

It seems you only use the information that's handed to you on a silver platter. Of coarse you're going to be confused about the story if you don't pay any attention. I know sins videos are just nitpicking but if you simply pick up a file that are sometimes shoved down your throat and read it itll tell you exactly how these things work. Its to give a little mystery to it that you the player are discovering the game worlds secrets. I also noticed this about your Evil Within videos.

    Sin 1: I think the foundation is just as interesting as the SCPs themselves, but more importantly, you're giving the game a sin for not being subtle when taking inspiration from something, that alone would be fine, but then you go on a long can't about how they make it obvious that people should be going to the source of their inspiration instead, as to imply that this game is not a worthwhile experience, and considering how many people like this game, I'm guessing you're wrong.
    Sin 2: there is absolutely nothing wrong with calling this game "control" because it ties into the plot of the game, you are criticizing a game for doing something that makes sense.
    Sin 3: so is the problem that the magical ghost friend is not funny or entertaining? I thought this game had a serious tone, the ghost doesn't need to be funny, it just needs to contribute to the plot in a meaningful way, and you aren't criticizing it for not doing it.
    Sin 4: the game can do both, narration isn't a bad thing, in fact if we went with the show don't tell logic, we have to consider how this is a game, which has another aspect that show don't tell doesn't account for, and it's story telling through gameplay, if we said that telling in movies was objectively bad, then having non interactive moments like cutscenes could also be considered bad in games because they should tell the story in an interactive way, and don't go telling me that's impossible when half life exists. Point is, showing and telling can be combined without making the story worse.
    Sin 7: multiple characters in a game being voiced by the same actor does not need to be explained, at all. Maybe this was supposed to be a joke, and if so, it sucks.
    Sin 13: they didn't wait, what happened was a method in story telling where time is stopped while you listen to the characters thoughts.
    Sin 14: so she has a ghost in her head, and she has established character motivation that you mentioned at the start of this video, but somehow she's indistinguishable from a silent protagonist.
    Sin 19: since disturbed songs are awesome, this is not a bad thing.
    Sin 25: maybe Jessie deduced that already and didn't feel like it needed to be brought up, since the guy was helping her.
    Sin 38: the hiss probably adopted the name for themselves.

      @@spouwnerring Yeah, Remedy's already confirmed that they're not going to try to fix the game. The game bombed. It only turned a profit due to the Epic Store exclusivity deal. The PS5 version will probably play better, but I wouldn't bank on it. There are far better-looking games on PS4 that are also far bigger that run way better already. Control is just very ineptly optimized.

    "Remedy made the mistake of believing the organisation that locks up the SCP is more interesting than the SCP's themselves"
    I don't really agree that this was their core issue.
    The organisation behind the SCPs is as fundamental to the setting as the SCPs are and can easily be as interesting if not moreso, in fact several SCPs are pretty much based around the organisations and less so the SCP (5K, 1609, several 001 proposals) and some others have their most interesting components not be the SCP but how the facility attempts to deal with them (specialist 0 in 3333 is one example).
    The issue is that when you focus on the organisation you need to make the SCPs serve the narrative that is being created around the facility, as the nature of the organisation should reflect down to every SCP to some level, which prevents the SCPs from outshining the central narrative by contributing to it instead.
    But you still need to make the SCPs individually interesting so that they can contribute.
    What I would at a glance think controls issue might stem from is that they failed that connection by not making the SCPs interesting (or at least the most common one you deal with) which in turn makes the orginisation less interesting.

    Funny how he sins stuff that was explained in the game, but then again, cinema sins, from wich this is inspired, also sins the most stupid shit.
    That being said, if you read this and you never played Control: This game is worth it. It is a great game. Maybe not the best game, but it is really really fun and good. Don't let this trash talk deterr you :)

      uhhhhhh no, no they aren't explained. The game ISNT worth it. It's good if you're fucking stupid, yeah. But if you have the ability to critically think, this game is fucking awful.
