They probably dismissed it as "Boomers don't get us, man. They just don't understand being sociopathic murderers with a heart of gold and social justice minded." That, or just a mix of self aware writers and woke writers.
Either way, this is one of the worst video games I've ever seen. Even Cyberpunk was better than this cause it was a new IP. But what they did to my favorite franchise is like having an ex wife who forced your youngest son to become a woke criminal out of spite to you.

We live in an age where lies are packaged as "truth" even down to not knowing what a "woman" is and putting biological men in women's sports, and the truth is dismissed as a lie, such as the pandemic coming from a gain-of-research lab in Wuhan.
The old crew I WOULD invite into my home because they're genuine and true to who they are. And by the third game onward, are intentionally pushed as anti-heroes (or "puckish rogues"). These people though? Are inconsistent walking contradictions who are also liars ("good at what they do, good people" etc). Dartigan is right in that they're perfect Far Cry villains; misguided narcissists who believe they're the "good guys" despite what their actions actually say about them. They're perfect social justice warriors.
But in short, you could actually TRUST the likes of the old Boss, Pierce, Shaundi, Gat, and Kinzie. There's nothing trustworthy or likeable about this new gang; especially Kevin. He's literally the worst traits of everything about Zoomers nowadays.

When I think of Saints Row, I always think back the monster truck scene from 2 with Maero. It shows how absolutely horrible a person the boss is, and how evil and vindictive they are. It's a fantastic bit that illustrates you as a villain protagonist, because YOU ARE. There are just worse people than you out there, sure, but the Saints don't try to moralize and make what they're doing seem right, it's just what they want to do for their own gain. You're surrounded by murderers, drug dealers, and thieves at all times; you're not the good guy, and that was A GOOD THING. This weird moralizing they throw in the reboot about sturggling young adults and "fighting the system" or what-have-you doesn't endear me to the characters; it makes me dislike them because they're fooling themselves. At least the Saints used to know they were fucked up people.

    • @LadyBern

The brotherhood story line is one of my favorites to think about. Because the Brotherhood are the same as the Saints in a way, they are what the saints would've become had the playa not gone into a coma.
And really it shows how petty the playa is. They hurt maero and targeted the brotherhood at first because of an offer of a small cut which makes sense given the saints don't have the pull they once had, it doesn't benefit them to give them a bigger cut. Which the saints would've done if it was some other upstart gang looking to make a name for themselves.
Then they retaliated, we lost Carlos, they lost jessie, then more members and their weapons, then Matt, and so on. All over the cut offered to what was an obsolete gang.

When I think about Saints Row, I think about the ridiculously fun missions and all the crazyness and gameplay freedom you get compared to GTA.
The reason is because SR3 was my first one. I bought it because it looked cool and had hype behind it, and I was pleased with what I played despite not knowing the story of the characters in it.
I found out about their backstories much later

The saints may not be good people, but they HAD personality and relatability on a deep level. Politics isn't deep. Everyone with a a pulse has an opinion on it and you can find several thousand people with the exact same thought process. When it comes to values, character and personality, people may be the same in some ways, but the differences out weight the similarities and that's why the OG crew connected with me personally. It highlighted my uniqueness and individuality as a person. Just like it did others.

Atleast in the original 4 games they actually gave a reason why the saints became much more friendly and passive over the years, after SR2 they basically got through all the rough and bloody growing pains of an empire, once they stood ontop they focused on appealing to the public more than brute force to keep control, they already had control and a huge following by the end of 2. They fell off a bit during 3 after losing alot of clout and power and going in exile to steelport, but by then, due to their long lasting fame, they had the ability to find very powerful connections in the government and such (kinzie and her FBI ties being crucial to the saints in 3) to come back ontop without reverting into an overly violent street gang again like they were for years in 1 and 2.

One reason people liked SR 1 + 2 is that it was about the MC's rise as a character. It fleshed them out. For motive, for means. It was a full arc in and of itself. By the third, you could very much argue high functioning sociopath - but it was earned. He learned, the very hard way, that everyone was going to screw him. Or screw him over at some point. Everyone. Gat was the only one MC ever really trusted, and Shaundi never really got the chance (as asked in SR 4 romance path) because she was busy "fucking half of Stillwater." Again, her character arc was a bit more jarring, but she learned and grew as well. This one doesn't have a Pierce, who never really had to grow because it was accepted that he was not the brightest bulb but might come through as clutch. He was the endearing comic relief that was often tied annoying. They all attempt to replace him for the bad takes on humor. They don't have a Carlos, because you don't really learn to be what you are in this game. Part of that is the devs knowing their player base probably understands all the mechanics but for a reboot story; they needed to treat it less as a tutorial and more as a "stay a while and listen..." It's still a story. If you want to start from the beginning and try to save the legacy, you have to accept that you're tossing the old work out, and actually start. From. The. Beginning. Instant gratification wasn't what the fan base wanted. Either of them.
A big problem with the reboot is, it kind of isn't one. They started the story from the point you are a rookie merc, sure. They also kept in the "I prefer puckish rogue" attitude that marks the character a sociopath... BUT it's not. That behavior is learned. Socio. This MC is actually written like Nuali. A full psychopath. It'd be one thing if they actually looked like they were struggling financially. If they'd gone to school in a flashback and everyone but Eli had been turned down for scholarships so they were forced to shit jobs to scrape by; and turned to gang life as means to better themselves. Then you can maybe mitigate the entitlement. However, I think you're right. Volition and Deep Silver probably figured most who play these games don't give that much of a flying rat's arse about story. Maybe they just didn't want to put in the work... but damn, you'd think the industry would have learned it's bloody lesson after the snaffu of Cyberpunk. : /

That would require actual talent and/self awareness. Volition is lacking both.
An even easier plot twist would've been the game being told through the eyes of unreliable narrators. The four main cast believe they're so cool and likable, but in reality, everyone in Santo Illeso hates them and see them as the narcissist woke assholes they are, and the final act of the game has you either accepting the reality that the new "Saints" are actually full-on villains, or getting to play as Nualli and finally killing them, which is what most players would've chosen anyway and been a great plot twist we've rarely seen in gaming. They could've even had a post credits scene where a young Gat from Stilwater comes in and sees the Saints are imposters and he takes over the remaining NPC Saints and tell them to join the real Third Street Saints or die.
Now THAT would've redeemed this horrible game.

Saints Row the Third is probably my favorite game in the series (the 4th one was okay but didn't really feel like a Saints Row and more like superhero simulator). The humor in it was amazing ("A fucking Tiger!!!") and was just over the top enough that it felt like I was playing around in a really good action movie with some good spoof material on the side. It still felt like I was playing a "gangster," even when it went beyond a little with some of the more out there missions and side content.
This new Saints Row just seemed to suck the soul out of the franchise... Its like they rebooted my favorite older movie and decided that everything that was actually good about it is now bad ala "its problematic..." like going out of their way to attract a new audience while simultaneously alienating their old one... Saints Row did the exact opposite and made its cast as wholesome as possible, but people HATED that because that approach doesn't really work when you want to tell a story about a street gang. Making a capitalist-styled criminal empire sounds like it would work in something like Borderlands.

    (Prelude To Game Play)
I owned the Reboot, I watch a ton of Saints Row Reboot review videos & Long game play reviews. But i want to give you the real....okay let's start with the day I brought the game. I purchased the game as on the first of September....yes I paid the $65.00 cost....(Sometimes Curiousity Cost). Of course it was a brand-new copy....when I got home popped the disc in my PS4....I was surprised the load bar was quite fast until I push the start button & ran into a long EULA agreement statement. So I agreed...now before I go to war, I like to adjust my settings such as disable the subtitles. Turn up the audio, & adjust the camera rate. The only thing left now to head to the gameplay. So usually I like to keep my difficulty on normal until I complete the game then I play again on hardest difficulty.
    (The Actual Game Play) ....
So I do my customiization of the boss....so I create a bad Azz tattooed up black chick I named her "Tameka"....
Tameka once shes available for the open world of Santo Illesso....the world is her oyster,. I experienced minor glitches, 3 game crashes & 1 mission redo.....but most of the time my gameplay ran good. Even though it was many side quest, main story missions, & money making hustles....but unfortunately the open world felt bland....the music radio was stale, & the storyline is dryer than exzyma skin......the characters is weak & out of touch & the only gang In the story that kept it Saints Row was the "Panteros Gang". I would recommend to wait for the day patches & game updates. But if your juices of curiosity gets the best of you. Then check it out.....

Good video as always Dartigan! As soon as Volition said this was going to be a woke reboot with none of the classic SR humour, I knew it was going to be bad, but how bad, didn't predict it. I've not seen a lot of good quality products that have the label woke attached to it and all the things to make PC, Saints Row wasn't it! It's like making It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia woke when the whole point is that these are awful people with awful morals and you're supposed to be laughing at them, not with them! Also, the gameplay is so bad, it's on par with Cyberpunk in its early stages! I don't see this improving with patches like Cyberpunk did!
I'm so voting for The Medium, as someone with mental health issues, seeing the game's overall message is that the mentally unwell character has to die to make things right, it's really disgusting and Bloober has another game with the same message (the Blair Witch), it's put me off from buying any of their games and I don't think their Silent Hill 2 remake will be good either!
