First Ride in my "new" old 14 Foot Aluminum Boat

  • Finally had a chance to take out the old 14 foot Lone Star aluminum boat I purchased over the winter. I got to go out into the creek with this little aluminum V hull boat that was purchased to potentially replace my 12 foot aluminum V hull boat. However, I need to see if it floats and is in in fact better suited for me and my needs than my 12 foot boat.
During this short outing I used a paddle, a Minn Kota Riptide 55 lbs. thrust 12 volt trolling motor connected to a lead acid battery and a Mercury 2.5 hp two stroke short-shaft outboard engine. The Mercury outboard motor gave me some trouble which cut the trip short but I still had enough time on the water to make some initial observations on whether this boat might be better suited for my boating needs.
    00:00 Introduction
00:39 The items I need to bring with me to take my small boat out for a ride
01:52 Hooking the boat trailer up to my truck

03:38 First time taking the old 14 foot aluminum boat out for a ride
04:15 First impressions of the old 14 foot Lone Star aluminum boat in the water
05:20 Starting the Mercury 2.5 outboard motor in the creek
07:52 Things aren't going so well
10:00 Final thoughts about my first outing with the 14 foot aluminum Lone Star boat

I feel your pain.....I took my new 4 hp 4 stroke Mercury out on the Patuxent the other day to try a little fishing on my new old town discovery sport 15. i had disconnected the aux fuel tank after running it in the tub the day before. it ran fine. i didn't start it before i put everything in the truck to get there. well, i paddled the canoe out about 100 feet, away from the fishermen on shore and commenced to start the motor. nope, nothing doing. after about 30 minutes of pulling and trying, i paddled back in and put the canoe back on the truck and brought it home. put it in the tub, hooked up the aux tank, pulled a few times and it took off. talk about being pi$$ed off. maybe i didn't have the connector on completely. i thought it might have been something with the safety switch.......try again another day. good luck figuring yours out.....

I have the exact same motor, Mercury 2.5 hp two stroke short-shaft, and this exact thing happened to me last season- stranded me across a huge lake, except I didn't have a backup trolling motor like you (so so smart!), so I had to row, against the wind for about 2.5 hours to get back to the ramp. NOT fun! It turns out that it was the carb killing the motor due to residue buildup. Had to take it completely apart and clean everything out, and it was good to go after that. Hope this helps!

Looks like a carb problem. Try pulling the choke a little bit at a time when running. If it runs better with choke, its not getting enough fuel. Alternatively, if closing the fuel valve makes it run better, it is getting too much fuel. This points to a float problem.
I see Brandon is fixing the old 2 hp. I haven't watched it yet but I'm interested in the diagnosis. Cheers

You could make lashing points top and bottom on the inside of Gunwhale and add a minicell foam as flotation. We use to do this with white water canoes. I am a big fan of floatation in any boat.

I had an 1986 Evinrude 25hp that was very unreliable. After running a bit it would die and I couldn't start it for anything. After I sat and waited for 30 minutes or so it would crank and run for another 15 or 20 minutes and start cutting out and then die. I was getting plenty of water flow through the exhaust, so I doubt it was overheating. I sold it, because a friend gave me a little 1956 Johnson 3hp and it was the most reliable motor I'd even owned. But, it wasn't big enough. So, I bought a 1969 Evinrude 25hp ELECTRIC START! This motor is just as reliable as the little 3hp and I don't get blisters from yanking on the pull start! Sometimes the old things are just plain better than the new stuff! Oh yea, the boat I have is a 1969 Proline 14 foot V-bottom. So, now I have a motor that matches my boat!

In my Suzuki 2.5 hp LS (4-stroke)on my sailboat, I use "Trufuel" Ethanol Free which they sell at Home Depot. It costs a little more, but a small engine doesn't use much, and it is well worth the extra cost!!
I also used Trufuel Ethanol Free in my Mercury 7.5 HP (2-stroke) for several years on a previous sailboat and never had a engine failure.

I run a Yamaha 2.5 HP 4 stroke and it starts in neutral - No reverse, - - My guess on the motor. The air vent on the gas cap needs to be cleaned - When you were in the boat with a no start, take off the gas cap and than start the motor. This is important. When you carry the motor the gas in the tank can get into the air vent and clog the vent. Gary in a 12 foot row boat from the Great Lake State. 🚂

My thoughts is if you ran your 2 cycle on glow fuel, 21 % castor oil and 79 % methyl or ethyl alcohol, it would never give problems. The catch is that alcohol is hard to buy and Baker AAA castor oil is a little pricey. You run richer than gas and you don't leave fuel in the tank overnight. I have a 51 Elgin. Smoothest 2 cycle ever made but 6 HP is a beast. I just bought a Hangkai 4 cycle 52 CC. 22 LBS.

IF you hadn't run your motor for a long time (3 or more months), and IF you didn't add fuel stabilizer before you stopped running it (Add stabilizer and let run for awhile to make sure gas in carb has stabilizer in it). THEN I would suspect a gummed up carburetor. No matter what small two stroke engine I have, I always tear apart the carburetor every spring - unless I've run some fuel stabilizer through ..... but sometimes, even then, I just have to take apart the carburetor and clean it.

Carbs are finicky and need to be clean clean clean. Borrow your wife's ultrasonic jewelry cleaner...fill it with warm water and a few drops of Dawn soap. Drop the *completely disassembled* carburetor in it and let it marinate for about 30 minutes (if you have a wire mesh tea ball, put all the teensy parts in it and drop the ball in). Take it out, rinse off the parts, and gently blow all of it dry with compressed air. Reassemble.
Also, you neglected to put the chain back up across the ramp after you launched your boat. You're lucky nobody drove up and stole all the water out of the creek 🥰

I would never, never, never, never use any ethanol gas in a 2-stroke motor. If it's old ethanol gas, I would add "never" 10 more times to my sentence! In my area, we have the choice of 87/E10, 88/E15, & 91/E0 gas. All my small engines (UTV, ATV, riding lawnmower, 2 push mowers, log splitter, rototiller, two-stroke grass trimmer, & multiple two-stroke chainsaws) get the 91/E0 gas. I was once shown what 87/E10 gas does to a simple one year old push mower carburetor decades ago, & I haven't used ethanol gas in a small engine since. That same engine has been going strong since (20+ years) without issue. My 2-stroke grass trimmer is 29 years old, & it's never run better. My newest chainsaw is 18 years old (the rest are older). I own 72 acres of woods, cut, & burn firewood. My 18 year old primary chainsaw has never been in a shop for repairs (except for a muffler bolt vibrated out once & I took it in to get a used bolt). My stuff is old, & it gets used! I haven't used my 15' Old Town Discovery Sport for a few years, however. I just picked up a brand new (never had gas in it) 1993 Johnson 3 hp outboard a few weeks ago. When the time comes to break the motor in, I will use the recommended oil mix ratio for the break-in period, & that motor will NEVER see a drop of ethanol gas. I realize non-ethanol gas may be hard to find in some areas, but all the gas stations in my area have that option (especially gas stations near lakes/boating areas). Storing a small engine with ethanol gas in it is especially bad. For a 2-stroke, I think it's even worse. Some of my stuff doesn't get used at certain times of the year, & I will add a gas stabilizer (but non-ethanol gas is key). If you stored ethanol gas in your engine, the carburetor may need to be cleaned or you may have to put a new kit in it to correct your issue now. In case I forgot to mention it - If possible avoid ethanol gas at all costs. If your local gas pump only has one hose coming off of it, run a gallon or two in your truck before filling your gas can. You don't even want the ethanol gas that may be left in the hose from the previous person using the gas pump. Thankfully, my local station has 4 choices (3 gas types I already mentioned plus E85 gas or diesel fuel) at each pump, and each choice has its own separate hose (4 different hoses at each pump).

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  Год назад

@@WayneTheBoatGuy I use boat gas for all my small engines now, when I get my boat motor I will have to remember to use the ethanol free...
But I thought the ethanol scavenges any water that might be in the tank from storage and condensation? So I would think a little ethanol would be a good thing?
In my saws it causes detonation (knock) thats why I quit using it.... Stuff to ponder
Thanks for the information Wayne 🤙 aloha

Hello Wayne (and other boat owners in the comments). I am looking for a boat expert to answer these questions. They have to do with the Scott and Laci Peterson case.
    - if you really wanted to, could you dump a 150 lbs body out of that 14’ boat without tipping it over?
    - would you have ever attempted to take that 14’ boat out on the choppy waters of the San Francisco Bay for your maiden voyage?
    - would you ever take that 14’ boat out in bay waters to fish for Sturgeon?

Nah this can be such a fun little boat. Plus it's always fun yo tinker wbsomethin new, have an issue & figure it out. That's part of the fun of being on the water in boats like this. Now in our big boat that we're traveling in... that's a different story. Everything should be in tip top shape. John boats can be like little craft projects tho. Fun to see what u can do & make of them.
