For me, "The Pillars of the Earth" is quite possibly the most incredible book I've ever read. I rarely become teary eyed when I read, or watch movies, but when Aliena finally finds Jack, I shed a tear.

I would recommend "As the Crow Flies" by Jeffrey Archer. It's an excellent story too.

This book is amazing. And Tom had three children.

I feel like Jack Jackson was the hero of the story because he is what caused the building of the new cathedral. Of the burning of the old church, of helping Tom build the cathedral along with after Tom's passing and making it grander. And I feel that Phillip wanted to repair the church as they gained more money, not build a big grand cathedral. Only when Tom presented his plans did Phillip start to get bigger ideas. Aliena did persevere through all the hardships but I feel like those were her own and not at all a big part of the building of the cathedral and the story until later times of bringing Jack back for him to create a big grand cathedral. Of course my own opinions

Isn’t it amazing? My everyday life could not resemble the scenes in this book any less and yet I was pulled right into the story too.

Thanks for the review! It was great! I think I'm gonna read this one! Here in portugual the book is split in 2 volumes which kind of makes the 900 pages seem less intimidating 😅

Brilliant book, though some of the dark scenes made me wonder whether I wanted to continue. Glad I did.

Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, A Column of Fire and The Evening and the Morning are all individually brilliant but as a series, they're a true masterpiece.
The Century Trilogy is similarly wonderful. I've read all of them repeatedly and still enjoy every bit.

Glad I saw this video because I’ve been going back and forth as to whether or not I want to pick up this book for years. I was worried the female characters would be boring so I’m glad to know they’re not. I’ll probably pick it up when I’m actually in the mood to read dense historical fiction. I will say the subject matter sounds interesting!

Ken Folletts female characters are sensational.I have developed a fictional sort of crush on nearly every lead woman he has created.

Ellen was my hero in this book. As you said, she didn't care what anyone thought. To her credit, she lived in a criminal and unknown transient path in the woods leading to the town, yet she kept she and Jack safe, fed and hidden. When Jack burned down the church he reflected on how hard life had become since leaving the safety of there life in the cave and the hunger he felt when staying with Tom and his family.

I've read this book multiples times over the years and I love it. It's fascinating how Ken Follett was able to wind such an interesting fictional story into so much actual true history. I learned so much reading this book and it prompted me to delve deeper into the history of these times.
While watching your vlogs for reading this book, and hearing you talk so much about how evil William was, I kept thinking "What about Waleran Bigod?" While William is an absolute despicable human being and I hated him, I always felt that Waleran Bigod was the bigger villian because he was the puppet master behind it all - he actually was controlling William much of the time and getting him to do a lot of evil things at Waleran's behest. Either way, they were both horrible people and whenever I see a question about the biggest villains in a book I've read, those two are always who immediately come to mind.

    • @stormy8690
      @stormy8690 4 года назад

Yes and I agree that he was the brain behind the brawn's (William) but William did terrible things that Waleran had no part of.

I am a prolific reader and I read and had to own it for my library. I want to tell everyone that this is one of the best books I have read in my life. The story of the intrigue surrounding the construction of the cathedral was fascinating.

Follet is a thriller writer and his focus is plot. So the characters are defined by how they respond to events and the frequent shifts in the political power structure. Characters become primary or the dominant character for a time, but then diminish in importance (or re-emerge as primary for a briefer period). So I don't think there is a main character.....but if there was it would be Philip, who has to improvise quickly frequently and who provides the means/opportunities for the other main characters to achieve their aims and their contribution to the growth of Kingsbridge. [SPOILER NEXT SO DON'T READ OBVIOUSLY UNLESS YOU'VE COMPLETED THE BOOK] The one unresolved story element is that Aliena never discovers how her father was denounced and over-thrown. Her relationship with Philip was already conflicted, so maybe Follet thought that discovery would have been too much (or perhaps just one of those things that never do get resolved in stories, because there is no natural or compelling way for that discovery to occur).

I read this a few years ago. Its one of my hubbys favorites, and he talked me into it, since I love historical fiction. It was such depressing book. I was miserable reading it. The bad guys were just so awful, and it was never ending. I never read the 2nd book. I was emotionally exhausted after this one😫

It's very funny to me that a lot of people find the length of this book intimidating. I manly read epic fantasy and so about 1000 or so feels very average to me. I find it strange when the book is below 300 pages.😆

Great Review though l think quite a few of the characters had there hero or heroine moments . William was a kind of Terry Thomas character Great villain by the way

Just read the book and while the general plot was ok never have I ever had the displeasure of learning about every shape, coverage, color, and curl of every female character's pubic hair. Really really didn't need to know that about literally every girl in the book. Author is gross
