I really appreciate you defending the Christianity. I’m a Christian myself, and it can be pretty vexing to see a lot of people’s opinions on Christianity in the world of book tube. It’s refreshing to see a booktuber actually defend Christianity. I definitely feel in the minority in the world of book enjoyers, with my views, so it’s always good to see someone else with similar views.
I have been a Pillars of the Earth fan for many years, recently finished the Evening and the Morning, which is sort of a prequel to the Kingsbridge stories. It’s a great book also, I loved learning about the history of Kingsbridge before it became Kingsbridge.

Was just about to echo the same sentiments. He shows a real maturity towards reading which a lot of other booktubers could do well to imitate instead of wholesale calling things "pRoBlEmAtiC" all the time. Very refreshing. This is the way. (and I'm saying this as an atheist myself)
Pillars is a top 10 book of all time for me. It sounds like you would enjoy Guy Gavriel Kay's works, if you haven't read him yet. Very much historical fantasy but with a minimal use of magic or fantastical things.
Like Follett (as you probably know lol) I’m an atheist. I haven’t read this book so I couldn’t comment on the negative aspects that it portrays. That being said I really like the idea of a novel showing the disparate aspects of life during the 12th century. I’m very much looking forward to reading it. Btw, I’m about 150 pages into Fall Of Giants of the Century trilogy and it’s amazing, I think you’ll love it! Great review Jonathan!
Great review! This is a book I’ve wanted to read for a while, however you are the only reviewer that I have heard warn about the extensive explicit nature of the book. I try to stay away from overly explicit content. So thanks for the heads up!
It makes me really excited that you loved this book so much. I kinda wanted to read it this year but I don't think I'll get to it. It's definitely a priority for next year though!
One of the best books I have ever read. The characters and the story will stick with you for a long time. I have also read the following entries in the Kingsbridge series and thoroughly enjoyed them as well. I will disagree, however, with your sense of how Christianity was dealt with. I thought it was very realistic especially when you consider the vast majority of those who professed to be Christians through the ages did so with less than pure intentions and principles. Of course that expediant form of belief continues today.
I've had a copy in Spanish and other in English of this book for a while now and I haven't been able to pick either to read it. It really is intimidating. I've also watched how Mr. Durfee has recommended it through a lot of his videos, and I think your video complements his, at least for what interests me in a book of this kind.

I didn't read it in three days, but I think I took only a week or so. It was so engrossing I was reading up to 200 pages a day. World Without End is also GREAT. Pillars of the Earth had a wonderful TV miniseries adaptation. The adaptation of World Without End was AWFUL 😅😅
@@jonathankoan And you're right about Follett's cynical view of religion. It was just the de facto view of religion among intellectuals in the eighties and nineties. I hear people talking like this today and I'm just like "we've got different problems now." You can see the same thing in some of GRRM's short fiction. It seems so trite now 😆

I just started reading Pillars of the Earth and I absolutely ❤️ it. I bought all the books in the series. Ken Follett is my new favorite author 🙂

You should check out World Without End, not a true sequel but set over 100 years later in Kingsbridge, and deals with the Black Plaque.

Follett is one of those 'best served hot' authors. I love all his books

Really Long books. Some people define a tome as 1,000 pages, some people define Tomes as around 500 or more pages.
