I'm thinking of giving it a model of a low poly rat, removing the ally flag, and dropping the damage to 1. Then setting a trap where there's a roar in the sewers and Gordon jumps on top of a metal prop to avoid taking damage from the fleeing swarm. Then he investigates down that path and then an Antlion Guard bursts through the wall.
hmm, Black Plague that was passed around by flies riding on rats, 1340’s likely before jermas creation though he may have been a deity way before he was born.
Valve has been trying to get swarming NPCs working since the boids in HL1. I figured npc_surface was actually supposed to be the hydra, and the blob was related to the cut particle storm.
Valve has shown some crazy experiments with swarming NPC's but they have only really used a lighter version of the code for L4D, besides that its all just experiments. There's some GDC talk about boids where they show a real cool demo of a 100 or so crows flying around a complex missile-silo-like environment that's running in HL2, where the group splits into smaller groups that go different directions and then merge again a little later, looks really cool & really captures the feel of 'smart units'. Sadly unlike the EP2 stuff the code for those boids on steroids never leaked, since most of their leaks are just marketing anyway this likely means they plan to use that version somewhere.
@@suicidalbanananana Yes, those are some of the uses for the swarming behavior, but if it's combined with metaballs like in npc_surface, like the part of the video where the snarks form a lambda on the wall, it could be used to create the tentacles of the hydra, which could react dynamically to explosions or being cut with a sawblade in a way that might be harder to do with just a model. The npc_surface the particle benchmark actually tries to use a missing model named "Hydra.mdl" but is different than the one in the leak, and uses hydra textures. And I mention the particle storm npc because everything we've seen it didn't really do anything other than create a visual effect that might have been an earlier attempt at the metaballs/paint. Either that, or someone really liked the blob enemy from Unreal.
Considering the fact that it seems to be on the player's side and specifically created to take down Combine, my theory is that it was an earlier version of the Antlion bait. Either you throw or just send it after enemies and they consume them. If true, they probably changed it to Antlions instead because while the Blob can get around obstacles, Antlions are way faster at it, as well as being easier to control, less buggy and more suitable for indoor areas (which is where most areas with them take place).
If you keep up with Half-Life stuff you know that's not true. At least not technically (it wont be called Episode3, they changed Ep2 cliffhanger & are working on something that comes after)
Too bad there’s no rain in Half-Life 2, look at how good that visual was. Imagine seeing that in the game it would be so cool. Kind of looks like the L4D2 rain maybe they repurposed it. Still, imagine if throughout the uprising chapters if an overcast slowly set over head and by the end of the game it’s pouring hard
Concerning half life only Blop's were probably the base AI function for snarks to be put inside episode 2 but the idea got scrapped and was later modified and implemented into regular NPC AI.
i really wish someone made a fully made version of the blob for gmod it would be awsome to see it absorbing and growing over maps like construct or spawning it in in a hl2 map and seeing it swallow everything around it.
If the leeches from HL1 managed to survive on Black Mesa and multiply until they became a plague that took over the entire ocean, who says that the snarks couldn't either? Maybe not so much because they supposedly create their units in the corpses of the victims they attack, but imagine a section with some abandoned buildings where a swarm of snarks appears and both the player and the combine have to flee from it? (obviously the combines stay behind and are eliminated by it for the player to see) Considering that the NPC that would control this swarm of snarks is coded as an ally, perhaps at some point the player would be able to control it in his favor as he does with the antlions.
Call me crazy but my theory is that the "blob" NPC could have been meant for the unknown entity featured in the Xen concept art that Andrea Wicklund made for Episode Three.
maybe we can get valve to finish this project because i would love some "living goop" physics in a game, let alone any physics besides solids and fake smoke (textures that just collide with the ceiling and stop)
I remember Gabe saying that HL3 had things no other FPS had done and there were leaked HL3 strings that talk about a “weaponizer” of different materials. They must have loads of different experimental mechanics they either couldn’t make a game around or just ditched for VR. We may never know.

The only things I can think is early l4d 2 zombie path finding but an npc (least likely) or early version of snarks in hl2 or rats (last 2 suggestions I found in the comments)
You're actually right on the money, the zombie pathfinding in both of the Left4Dead games uses a slightly simpler version of this swarm stuff, instead of moving common infected one by one they are moving as a group, wich is exactly what the npc_surface & blob are about too. Its just slightly simpler version because zombies dont need to fly :P
I would guess it's extremely difficult to make it look good and work seamlessly. You can get the basics down fairly easily but as you can see, it still looks very janky even after their third or fourth attempt at a swarming NPC over twenty years

not possible because the portal 2 blob is only possible in that game, which is the latest iteration of Source. Half life 2's version of source is much older and is the only version that even has the blob's code
