Gorgeous!! I love 🐸 and grew up catching them in ponds in the summer but the bullfrogs were very elusive and outsmarted 2 tomboys. Such an amazing find, so exciting!
By the way! Some people are concerned when someone holds a frog like this but its proper to hold larger frogs this way :) it keeps the pressure off their sensitive ribcage and upper organs reducing injury risk , and is more comfortable on the frog. ((It also cant do anything to risk its own safety to get out)) Also their legs just look really small compared to their body :) they aren’t being squished
@@knownie from what I’ve heard, yes technically he should be wearing gloves but keeping your hands clean and wet and relatively free of oils won’t hurt them if you grab them very temporarily. If you have frogs as pets at home then yes absolutely wear gloves because that stuff from your hands builds up in their skin over time and breaks down their slime barrier
A herp enthusiast would want to keep the blue bullfrog for a breeding program to have more blue bullfrogs. They would probably become pets to other herp enthusiasts.
especially because once released back in to the wild, it's only a matter of time before it's poor camouflage gets it killed.. i wonder how on earth its lived as long as it has with that bright color
what’s really interesting is it’s hard to tell the actual rate at which this mutation occurs in the wild since so many individuals will be eaten before they are found by humans
Excellent point, but in this case that rate is likely well-documented. Because of its' large size and hardiness, the American Bullfrog is the most commercially farmed frog in the world (for the legs). So with such high numbers reproducing under the protective care of humans, you could get a real idea of this mutation's genetic frequency. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody somewhere is purposely breeding only blue ones for a big debut as the hot new pet. LOL STAY TUNED.
I actually found one of these spectacular frogs in a West Virginian pond on my property. It was completely accidental. I was teaching my girls how to fish and my littlest one got her line stuck in the reeds. When I got it loose, we had this beauty hooked through the leg. I was able to release it with minimal damage but we all thought it such a special experience. I didn't realize just how special until this video. Thanks for sharing.
Can’t they clone the gene? They would definitely sell as pets ! Wouldn’t be to hard to try to selectively breed them in a kiddie pool with a light in your basement. If someone could figure that out, they would make bank !
@@MrChase115 Oh for sure! Selective breeding happens ALL the time in the reptile/amphibian trade! Leopard geckos and bearded dragons are a great example of this…I don’t think they were intended to be BRIGHT WHITE originally hahah
blue + yellow = green. "Xanthos" is Greek for yellow, prefix "a-" means without. This mutant froggy's skin lacks the yellow-pigmented cells that would normally alter the light reflected to our eyes by its iridescent cells to make it look green. Without the yellow (axanthism), its iridescent skin reflects blue to us but is not blue-pigmented! Fun.
For anyone wondering, axanthic is basically the opposite of albinism. Albinism is the lack of brown and black melanin pigmentation - see albino ball python for an example, they have yellow coloration. Axanthic is the lack of yellow and orange pigmentation, so typically you would see more of a black toned creature. But the basic color wheel, you take yellow out of green you get blue. Crazy and beautiful.
Because mutations are hard to pin down and even if one does show up in the hobby you need several lines of it to avoid inbreeding, though making heterogeneous animals could help to eventually have more come into the hobby because if another animal has this gene just not displaying you could wind up with more of them from breeding those two.
Time and money comes at the cost to breed these frogs. And also morality if you decide to resort to inbreeding and create health problems in these frogs just for their blue skin tone
@@starstorm1267 I’m just saying that if I could nail down this one gene, then I could potentially selectively breed for terrestrial traits, bipedalism, and intelligence, and it’s POSSIBLE, that I could create a species of smurfs
