      Nothing to do with the guitar thas for sure
      It is less gain on the amp settings and not so many pedals in front of the amp also the micing of the cabinett the recording of the video has alot to do with this tone
      This tone was NOT on any album he made thats for sure
      Also the "rack routing" thrue a bunch of rack stuff compare to AXE FX he uses today make a hugh difference

  • @DiogoVincenzi
    @DiogoVincenzi 9 лет назад +194

    I'm sorry...I know Petrucci must be very happy with Musicman these days, but his tone was vastly superior with his Ibanez signature. I know there are other things that go into it, but to me after he went with Musicman, it was never the same. Anyway, I have already watched this video several times. I think it's one of his best performances ever.

      Diogo Vincenzi I was just about to type this comment and you beat me to it! I've owned plenty of musicman JPs but now currently own 2 Ibanez J customs. Go figure.

    • @DiogoVincenzi
      @DiogoVincenzi 9 лет назад +6

      JJLipton There's just something about Ibanez, and the tone the guitar has, that I just don't see from other guitars of the same type. It's the same thing with Fender. You can own any Strat copy in the world. When you play a Fender for the first time, you see why they are the legendary guitars that they are.
      BTW, J Customs are awesome. Congrats. My pride here is a very rare Ibanez Radius 540 HSS with maple fingerboard from 1987 :)

    • @DanielVerberne
      @DanielVerberne 9 лет назад +4

      Diogo Vincenzi Have to agree, absolutely amazing display of virtuosity, warmth and versatility in this particular solo break. I think his current set of guitars also sound great, but there's a lot of effects going on with his playing now and maybe that sounds great to John's ears but gets between him and audience perhaps? I don't know. Still think he's one of the best players on the planet and he still surprises me to this day with his inventive and disciplined approach to soloing and melodies.

    Looooove this solo. How it builds up, and how he gets to express all of the various ideas that encompass his overall style, without making it seem TOO self-indulgent. In my opinion this is so much more interesting to listen to than unaccompanied solos that sound more like exercises.

    Petrucci's playing sounded so effortless back then, no way could he play like he did then today. Of course you can't expect any guitarist to play like they did so many years ago but still, his feeling and tone is just something else here.

    • @Aaronmac404
      @Aaronmac404 6 лет назад

      Thing is, he plays like this still in long solo sections in their live sets. It's just the record stuff that he focuses on more technical playing for some reason. The last couple of times I have seen them live, there's always a long portion where Jordan puts on a droning synth pad and John goes to town; playing like he used to in the Images/Awake era. It's actually a little frustrating! I want that creativity in their records!

    I love John to death, but nothing today is as soulful and melodic as his earlier work. I mean, show me another guitarist that can take a classical passage (2:47), straight into blues and the transition is seamless. What a command he has of so many styles. This is the DT I fell in love with 30 years ago. ❤️

      I agree… this is without a doubt, one of the best guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Put together extraordinarily well. So much melody. Don’t know why his playing style changed so much to more of a metal sound. While playing as fast as he does, with so many notes crammed into a couple minutes of a solo, is impressive, I’ll take this over that any day. Less is definitely more.

    Hands down the best tone JP/DT ever had. It's so clean, sharp and every single texture comes out. Not only in this, but this entire concert. Even when the distortion is cranked up, you can taste every note in the performance, whereas now it all feels more groggy and muddy.

    • @kkronoss90

      Nowadays he is just trying to hide all the mistakes he makes (actually A LOT). It's almost impossible to not notice that for a decent ear. He is not able anymore to play accurate and fast, also his style is a lot less emotional

    Golden Era of Petrucci sound and Golden Era of Ibanez guitars

    This is Music! This solo spans everything from a classical/electronica mood to southern rock to blues. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of guitar greats out there and they are talented. But this is truly great playing. I hate to say it but all the guitar greats including JP were better when they were young. Their styles have gone to screaming guitars and confused, unorganized noise. Plus the drums and keyboard in this song make it epic.

      He's playing more advanced stuff now. Just because you don't, can't, or refuse to try and understand it doesn't mean it's worse as you put it. It's more of a reflection of you probably. Wishing everyone could stay the same. Maybe that's all you've done and are wondering why everyone else is so different now. You probably think Ten is Pearl Jams best album. Acting like he's not a better player now is just plain ridiculousness. Unless you think a musicians sole purpose on planet Earth is to make music that sounds good to only your ears.

      The tone in his older music is warmer and more natural and let's the real guitar genius shine. A lot of his newer stuff has more of an electronic or synthetic sound which takes away from the flow and feel. There are many of his newer solos that are not more advanced, just more chaotic chord changes and more fuzz. I guess he just figured out that it doesn't take much to impress or entertain the shallow, younger crowds anymore and he still gets paid with less effort. Do you fit this category? @@Budaboose

    • @dragonkompi
      @dragonkompi 8 лет назад +2

      No he is really technically sophisticated at guitar playing and has a really good ear. But he achived both through hard work playing 6 hours a day and studying music his whole life. Genius is someone who was born with those things like Vai and Jason Becker. No disrespect meant for guitar god Petrucci who is inspiring people all around the world to stop playing guitar.

    • @micha8469
      @micha8469 8 лет назад +1

      Lots of people spend shitloads of hours mastering something. So were there lots of Einsteins or only one? You think he was the only one studying hard? Check out youtube, there are lots of good guitarists but they don't even come close to Vai or Satriani even though I believe they study guitar and music hard. I also think that Petrucci is good but he doesn't have that natural thing that e.g. Vai has.

    • @dragonkompi
      @dragonkompi 8 лет назад

      Exactly, after certain time of mastering, talent gomes into play and it's what separates the geniuses from the rest.

    • @monicagupta6017

      guys u r getting it wrong. vai also had to put shit loads of time even more than petrucci ever did even guthrie and satriani did.

    • @xxrockon83
      @xxrockon83 7 лет назад +5

      False. Vai himself stated in a recent lesson that he had to work hard to become better at the guitar. He practiced for up to 12 hours a day and more. I highly doubt anyone is just born being able to do great things. It's called being human.

    • @HarisDT
      @HarisDT 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Pay attention how he approaches guitar playing, with finese, he has the best possible control over playing and delivers power when playing that's no match to any other player. The things I compare how great his technique is and overall virtuoso element. Petrucci is ages ahead of everybody. Taste-wise I agree with you, not everyone likes him but as far as what guitarist should look for and stray to...he is THE ONE.

    • @RanulfoKnox
      @RanulfoKnox 10 лет назад +1

      Right. Thats why i said he's the benchmark, the guitar player who any new virtuoso that pops up is compared to. Anyway i dont like is fast shreding lines when improvising, he loses all his feeling when goes into that "cheap path" to fill the moment, and thats why hes not my fav guitar player right now. Andy James is at this moment (give him a listen, crystal clear technique with lots and lots of feeling), tomorrow it could be anyone else, maybe petrucci again :)

    Oh..I missing that period of Dream Theater.
    John is really amazing, he got good phrasing,
    good melodic line and all the idea is appropriate
    to the whole show. And his sound is really sweet.
    I don't understand why he changed his style.
    Anyway, it's just an opinion :)
    He's one of my inspiration.

  • @RLuteran

    Petrucci is the best. He's not using a rediculous amount of distortion here and the notes come out flawlessly. He doesn't need distortion to cover his ass
