hehe. same for me .. I still have my big 19" 8 units rack with triaxis and 2:90 in it and a 4×12 recto speaker box connected. men. I so much loved petruccis sound back then.
Ha! I watch your channel Ola and i love this solo so i thought id look at the comments. Ironic that i found you commenting here. Its a small world out there!
Hell yes!! Petrucci is an absolute Monster! I'll never forget the first time I saw Dream Theater live- the "Awake" tour in 1994 in AZ- 😮😯😱🤪😄🥰!!! I was absolutely floored!! I was literally exhausted and exhilarated at the same time- incredible performance!
I really miss that DT Era: The sogns were happy, joyful, epic with almost ethereal atmospheres and Petrucci still had that particular "80s lofi early digital" tone and such a skill in mixing modes and scales that is just mind blowing..What an inspiring piece of Music...i really miss all that
Yeah coworker is dumb. Literally nothing he did here in this 10 out of 10 Guitar solo was because of effects, man some dudes are just flat out retarded for real who says that lol. In fact pretty much every single part of this on all instruments is perfectly written like objectively even if I wasn't into this kind of music.
Nothing to do with the guitar thas for sure It is less gain on the amp settings and not so many pedals in front of the amp also the micing of the cabinett the recording of the video has alot to do with this tone This tone was NOT on any album he made thats for sure Also the "rack routing" thrue a bunch of rack stuff compare to AXE FX he uses today make a hugh difference
The best representation of Petrucci's talent. I think he young and fresh in that hera. He now tribute himself and he's stuck in his patterns. Everything's there in that video: Feel, tone, techniques....10 on 10.
Yes sir take the time isolated guitar track and learning to live isolated guitar track has to be some of his finest work and that solo from the Spirit Carries On the silent man isolated guitar track is something else to acoustic
I'm sorry...I know Petrucci must be very happy with Musicman these days, but his tone was vastly superior with his Ibanez signature. I know there are other things that go into it, but to me after he went with Musicman, it was never the same. Anyway, I have already watched this video several times. I think it's one of his best performances ever.
Diogo Vincenzi I was just about to type this comment and you beat me to it! I've owned plenty of musicman JPs but now currently own 2 Ibanez J customs. Go figure.
JJLipton There's just something about Ibanez, and the tone the guitar has, that I just don't see from other guitars of the same type. It's the same thing with Fender. You can own any Strat copy in the world. When you play a Fender for the first time, you see why they are the legendary guitars that they are. BTW, J Customs are awesome. Congrats. My pride here is a very rare Ibanez Radius 540 HSS with maple fingerboard from 1987 :)
Diogo Vincenzi Have to agree, absolutely amazing display of virtuosity, warmth and versatility in this particular solo break. I think his current set of guitars also sound great, but there's a lot of effects going on with his playing now and maybe that sounds great to John's ears but gets between him and audience perhaps? I don't know. Still think he's one of the best players on the planet and he still surprises me to this day with his inventive and disciplined approach to soloing and melodies.
This is like nothing I've ever heard before. All of his solos in his studio songs sound so different from this, but even so, this is still magnificent. John is the essential musician.
This is the magic period of Dream Theater. I never think theyll be able to recreate the sound and atmosphere of this era ever again. This is how Petrucci is supposed to sound.
He is one of the most well rounded players ever. his technique alows him to play whatever he wants. whether it's smooth soloing like in the song or intense shred, he can do it. and he can do it better than anyone else. ROCK ON PETRUCCI!!!
We were talking about the people who gain the world and lose their souls... (Beatles "Within You and Without You, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, side 2 song 1 by George Harrison) Petrucci here quotes the sitar melody and vocal line.
Awesome guitar solo! He played with pure feel and emotion. He's only 26 years old playing live, unbelievable! Also loved the blues licks he added. Amazing guitar player who deserves the accolades.
I love John to death, but nothing today is as soulful and melodic as his earlier work. I mean, show me another guitarist that can take a classical passage (2:47), straight into blues and the transition is seamless. What a command he has of so many styles. This is the DT I fell in love with 30 years ago. ❤️
I agree… this is without a doubt, one of the best guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Put together extraordinarily well. So much melody. Don’t know why his playing style changed so much to more of a metal sound. While playing as fast as he does, with so many notes crammed into a couple minutes of a solo, is impressive, I’ll take this over that any day. Less is definitely more.
Petrucci's playing sounded so effortless back then, no way could he play like he did then today. Of course you can't expect any guitarist to play like they did so many years ago but still, his feeling and tone is just something else here.
John B Personally I think Petrucci has gotten a lot more technical in his writing, still great but the feel he had in this era is no longer there in my opinion.
Thing is, he plays like this still in long solo sections in their live sets. It's just the record stuff that he focuses on more technical playing for some reason. The last couple of times I have seen them live, there's always a long portion where Jordan puts on a droning synth pad and John goes to town; playing like he used to in the Images/Awake era. It's actually a little frustrating! I want that creativity in their records!
Looooove this solo. How it builds up, and how he gets to express all of the various ideas that encompass his overall style, without making it seem TOO self-indulgent. In my opinion this is so much more interesting to listen to than unaccompanied solos that sound more like exercises.
Yeah, and the best is that he doesnt shredruin it with those annoying badabadarululruluruluruluruulruulruulruul lines like he usually does... Well, almost.
Hands down the best tone JP/DT ever had. It's so clean, sharp and every single texture comes out. Not only in this, but this entire concert. Even when the distortion is cranked up, you can taste every note in the performance, whereas now it all feels more groggy and muddy.
Nowadays he is just trying to hide all the mistakes he makes (actually A LOT). It's almost impossible to not notice that for a decent ear. He is not able anymore to play accurate and fast, also his style is a lot less emotional
From time to time John has to hit the gain and show us all that he is still God, but when he is in the mood to play songs with this tone, it only solidifies the fact that he is God. He'll shred your face off, then sooth it with such beautiful music. Truly my favorite artist hands down.
I love his playing but i really miss the way he played in the 90s. I know every guitar player evolves over time but i really miss john petrucci of the 90s.
This is for all those people who keep saying that Dream Theater have no heart. This is one of the best solos in the history of electric guitar! (And from 1.25 to 1.59, John Petrucci does a tribute to The Beatles...the song is called Within You Without You). GREAT DT!!!!
Petrucci is the best. He's not using a rediculous amount of distortion here and the notes come out flawlessly. He doesn't need distortion to cover his ass
Unlike many guitarists of his genre, Petrucci has learned to let the music breathe, and to appreciate each note...His dynamics are varied and generally develop gracefully from melodic whispers outward into machine gun crescendos...I'm impressed.
Back when this video first came out, I purchased it on a whim because it was on sale... saw this solo, I've been an enthusiast ever since! Still one of my fav Petrucci moments.
I dont know why but i like DT and JP.alway when i heard songs such as Another Day it give me some peace and i feel happy i love his bright harmony and colorful tone it takes me back in early 90 s
A Picture-Perfect Petrucci moment in his early days..He's Golden. doesnt need to switch to GOD mode.. It's Pure Magic!!! gotta love this guy..I totally RESPECT him
i don't even..... just... lay back and enjoy this fine piece of musicianship... just... stop.. discussing or whatever it is, you guys are doing.... and listen.
i miss that dream theater, i miss portnoy,, it was all i listened to back then, someone show this to petrucci and remind him what good music they once made....
No doubt. I just miss this era of DT. The music just seems a lot more soulful and from the heart. Jordan compliments the band very well, but I miss Kevin. He was an integral part of a lot of the harmonies that he and John played together.
Jordan is an amazing player but he has classical style. Especially in the latest albums... too much piano parts... Sherininan and Kevin M were probably a better fit in DT
I’m still listening to this insane *thing* for all these years and this is still unbelievable to my ears. I mean what the hell? How could this happen?!
No he is really technically sophisticated at guitar playing and has a really good ear. But he achived both through hard work playing 6 hours a day and studying music his whole life. Genius is someone who was born with those things like Vai and Jason Becker. No disrespect meant for guitar god Petrucci who is inspiring people all around the world to stop playing guitar.
Lots of people spend shitloads of hours mastering something. So were there lots of Einsteins or only one? You think he was the only one studying hard? Check out youtube, there are lots of good guitarists but they don't even come close to Vai or Satriani even though I believe they study guitar and music hard. I also think that Petrucci is good but he doesn't have that natural thing that e.g. Vai has.
False. Vai himself stated in a recent lesson that he had to work hard to become better at the guitar. He practiced for up to 12 hours a day and more. I highly doubt anyone is just born being able to do great things. It's called being human.
The combination of 90's Petrucci guitar playing + 90's + Ibanez Guitars = PURE AWESOMENESS!! Wish he would still play and sound like that...I gotta be honest...being shredder myself I don't like 2015 Petrucci's style of shredding...
I miss that young petrucci style of guitar playing
Guillermo Pinto Yea. He crap now:))
+Spam'n'egg. LoL
+Spam'n'egg. He's not o.o
I just wrote this on another post. I agree, bro. All the way.
@Bjorn Ironsides I think it was ironical ;-) He's an absolut beast but I agree his playing was tasty here
A true electric guitars masterclass, everything, all tones, all techniques .
Why is John Petrucci is amazing? Because in 7 minutes he can play a Beatles-Blues-Funk-Shred-Emotive-Jazz-Classic Rock inspired solo!
And make it all blend effortlessly without making the changes of style obvious and abrupt
30 years ago
I thought I was reading a wish ad for a minute

The tone here man... this is why I got a triaxis and 2:90 back in the day.
hehe. same for me .. I still have my big 19" 8 units rack with triaxis and 2:90 in it and a 4×12 recto speaker box connected. men. I so much loved petruccis sound back then.
Oh hey ola!
Ola Englund I wish I could afford one
Ha! I watch your channel Ola and i love this solo so i thought id look at the comments. Ironic that i found you commenting here. Its a small world out there!
The chug is real!
still listening in 2024 anyone?
Shut up 🙄
10000000 percent! never ever gets old. wish he chased this tone a bit more, so amazing
Absolutely, never gets old
One of the greatest guitar solos ever - Petrucci is one for the history books 🤟
I really miss that DT Era: The sogns were happy, joyful, epic with almost ethereal atmospheres and Petrucci still had that particular "80s lofi early digital" tone and such a skill in mixing modes and scales that is just mind blowing..What an inspiring piece of Music...i really miss all that
early DT was kevin moore at his best
Part of being progressive is moving in different directions.
yeah me too..
@peterg5383 yeah just like "progressive" people.... what progress? 🙄🤣
Me too. No that portnoy is back, do you think there are any chances that they alter their direction?
Had a dude at work that said, "any guitarist could do that with enough effects backing." I laughed my ass off at him!
I bet you did...he has no knowledge of guitarist obviously 🤷♂️
Yep!! I know if I had JP's rig and tried to shred like him I'd sound like a Cartoon! And a noisy one at that!
His sound is so much better in this video than the current sound. Love the rough, sharp and snappy sound of the ibanez.
celdoor he could still get that tone today with music man but it’s mainly the chorus and delay today that doesn’t sound amazing
celdoor
Ibanez guitar inspire
His tone sounds very Vai-esque in this clip
But the Music Man will always win for me I love that rich, sweet tone he has now 🤘🏼
Nothing to do with the guitar thas for sure
It is less gain on the amp settings and not so many pedals in front of the amp also the micing of the cabinett the recording of the video has alot to do with this tone
This tone was NOT on any album he made thats for sure
Also the "rack routing" thrue a bunch of rack stuff compare to AXE FX he uses today make a hugh difference
Petrucci +Ibanez=wonder.
This solo will live forever... :')
The best representation of Petrucci's talent. I think he young and fresh in that hera. He now tribute himself and he's stuck in his patterns. Everything's there in that video: Feel, tone, techniques....10 on 10.
not stuck in patterns at all. have you listened to anything he's produced in the last 25 years? Jesus christ man.
The flame of youth🔥
I love the way Mr. Petrucci focuses on majors rather than minors here. It's a really upbeat solo and one of my all time favorites \m/
This is in B Mixolydian
Petrucci's style in the times of Images and Words is the best one.
Yes sir take the time isolated guitar track and learning to live isolated guitar track has to be some of his finest work and that solo from the Spirit Carries On the silent man isolated guitar track is something else to acoustic
I miss this old Petrucci Style, its quite Brilliant

Diogo Vincenzi he happy cause it were free Oo.
+Diogo Vincenzi Is it the guitar or the rig? Seems like this sound involves less thick distortion/overdrive.
This is like nothing I've ever heard before. All of his solos in his studio songs sound so different from this, but even so, this is still magnificent. John is the essential musician.
Petrucci in the ibanez years = best tone.
This solo is probably one of the main reasons I picked up the guitar 20 years ago.
This is the reason why I was in love with Ibanez and decided to buy one... and two... and (repeat forever) "just one more".
Me either...
ok but who asked?
Omg wtf did I just watch!!. I'm 55 year old rock guy and have never heard of this man am I dreaming?
I come back to this every so often and it is still my favorite guitar solo
I love this one and the studio recorded version equally
@@weefekwhat song is the studio one
This guitar is really one of the most beautiful designs I've ever seen
Oh the golden era of Petrucci and Ibanez! Amazing tone!
This is the magic period of Dream Theater. I never think theyll be able to recreate the sound and atmosphere of this era ever again. This is how Petrucci is supposed to sound.

That’s the JP model guitar no one has, beautiful!!
Exactly, that guitar was never in production, I have a P3 and P4 but that’s a unique piece
2:19 pinch harmonic is placed so great!!
0.25 - Love how he just lets the notes ring out and lets the guitar speak to you! excellent musician! the 90's DT is the best DT
We were talking about the people who gain the world and lose their souls... (Beatles "Within You and Without You, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, side 2 song 1 by George Harrison) Petrucci here quotes the sitar melody and vocal line.
This is what i mean....the tone the coolness the guitar and all the old thing from dream theater....i miss it so much
Awesome guitar solo! He played with pure feel and emotion. He's only 26 years old playing live, unbelievable! Also loved the blues licks he added. Amazing guitar player who deserves the accolades.
This Petrucci AND the short lived with short hair is the best. Tone, feeling, melody lines.
00:00 till 7:17 is awesome.
I agree
hercules too too I hate the last second too
I love John to death, but nothing today is as soulful and melodic as his earlier work. I’d say that set of licks was more blues edging on jazz fusion rather then classical, fantastic playing.
I agree… this is without a doubt, one of the best guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Put together extraordinarily well. So much melody. This song contains some of the most beautiful guitar playing ever. I constantly return to it to hear perfect melodies and harmony.
Best petrucci solo ever.
He is the living legend till now and G.O.A.T
Petrucci's playing sounded so effortless back then, no way could he play like he did then today. Of course you can't expect any guitarist to play like they did so many years ago but still, his feeling and tone is just something else here.
+ESPSJ Why not? In my opinion, the greats get better as they age.
John B Personally I think Petrucci has gotten a lot more technical in his writing, still great but the feel he had in this era is no longer there in my opinion.
Maybe he barely misses a note or key change, but (in my opinion) his phrasing these days is nowhere near what he did in those days.
Thing is, he plays like this still in long solo sections in their live sets. It's just the record stuff that he focuses on more technical playing for some reason. What year was this recorded?
This is John's best improvisation solo imo.
Except it's obviously not improvisation. It was written.
my all-time favorite JP moment!!!!!
Looooove this solo. How it builds up, and how he gets to express all of the various ideas that encompass his overall style, without making it seem TOO self-indulgent. In my opinion this is so much more interesting to listen to than unaccompanied solos that sound more like exercises.

Golden Era of Petrucci sound and Golden Era of Ibanez guitars
Who can argue this awesome shit. Has it all, musicality, technical prowess, rhythm, soul, groove. A great inspiration to guitarists everywhere.
Hands down the best tone JP/DT ever had. It's so clean, sharp and every single texture comes out. Not only in this, but this entire concert. Even when the distortion is cranked up, you can taste every note in the performance, whereas now it all feels more groggy and muddy.

He is perhaps the best guitarist of any genre.
The most amazing tone that Petrucci has ever had...the best playing that Petrucci has ever had....
The fastest and The createst guitarist in the world i never saw guitar player who play like this
I love his playing but i really miss the way he played in the 90s. I know every guitar player evolves over time but i really miss john petrucci of the 90s.
Love hearing Petrucci play without the "tear-your-face-off" distortion or 7-string. such a great tone here
This inspired me at 16 and I'm still watching it today
This is so beautiful. I don't even have words.
2019 and still the best :)
For me the best solo ever
His best tone and style! I love this solo! I wish he played more of this now.
John Petrucci. You're one the best guitarist players that i ever listen for 25 years ago. Thanks you😂
This is for all those people who keep saying that Dream Theater have no heart. This is one of the best solos in the history of electric guitar! (And from 1.25 to 1.59, John Petrucci does a tribute to The Beatles...the song is called Within You Without You). GREAT DT!!!!

really liked his style and tone during this era..
The majesty. The tone. The beautiful old school synth. Old school dream theater was so amazing I’m sad it’ll never be this way again
I'd have loved to have been in the audience for this gig. That was some truly next level stuff from John there, even the atmosphere looks amazing
Me too mate !!!
early 90's we had it really good
This so is a true performance rather than just shredding. His style throughout the whole solo was amazing.
This is my favorite JOHN PETRUCCI / DREAM THEATER Era 👍🏻💥🎸
Unlike many guitarists of his genre, Petrucci has learned to let the music breathe, and to appreciate each note...His dynamics are varied and generally develop gracefully from melodic whispers outward into machine gun crescendos...I'm impressed.
best solo ever
I love dream theaters music so much. John was so amazing back then.
