This is an exceptionally beautiful and meaningful song. The father of my child played it for me in 1973 on the telephone after I had left. He didn't say anything. I answered the phone and the music came on.
🎉I lost my partner 6years ago, we were planning to get married but God called him back home. This song comforts me 'you & me God knows we had it all, hey it was so good & it was so good & it was so good when he was my man'. I sorely miss him may his dear soul rest in eternal peace. Mr Dobbie Gray pls continue to rest in peace thanks for your music & your magic voice its so soothing😢❤😪😭🌹🇿🇦💫
I heard this for the first time when I was 8 years of age, didn't know what it meant but the melody was relevant as my mother played it every Saturday morning... today I play it for a reason ❤ Dobie Grey will be forever in our hearts
My mama and daddy had one of those 5 foot long stereos in their bedroom in the 70’s. I remember hearing and playing his albums day and night! No wonder they were a real life’s love story! Thank you Dobie! ❤️
What a great song and singer! I had this album back in the day and loved every cut. This song takes me back to an old girlfriend that I would sing this to.
You were the best thing in my life , I can recall You and me we had it. All WOW ❤️🌹💕 Just to sit and listen these words you learn to love God , you learn to love yourself and just stop and look at the beauty around you don't think of the bad things just enjoy Clean , relaxing and awesome music 🎵 Thank you for this amazing melody Mr Dobie❤️❤️❤️❤️
I dedicate this song to my 2 late beautiful kids - who passed away in 2003 (Mamnie) and 2014 (Thabang) (respectively.....whenever I miss you.....I always play this song.....
I cry everytime I hear this song. He is singing about his woman at the time but I relate it to when I had custody of my only son and lost custody. I have never been the same since that happened. Best years of my life were spent with my son when he was young. We had it all…
There were several Elvis songs way too many girls felt far too deeply because they believed he was singing about Priscilla. All the great singers of the 70's cut a ballad or two, or more. This is a good one .. thanks for the memories.
Beautiful heartfelt song sung so beautifully and sensitively. I can imagine this would have been perfect for Elvis, very sad to hear that he wasnt able to finish the recording, at stax in 1973. For sure it woukd have been a tearjerker, the lyrics are definitely relateable to Elvis,s own personal life.
Dobie Had a wonderful inspiring vocal of warmth, emotion and honesty, This song is! as exceptional in the voice and phrasing, as well the beautiful acoustic worked out to go along with it. beautiful rendition. What a lovely beautiful song. Burton Trent
What a better compliment than to learn that Elvis Presley loved the song you sang. It is a great song and Dobie Gray did a wonderful job. Dobie would have been a great singer for Elvis to sing with. Too bad it never happened.
JT we had it all for 12 beautiful months , the most wonderful time of my life, never looked or felt so great before or since. Love and miss you painfully.
dhornjr1 thinks: Elvis Presley loved it and considered recording it but felt that his fans would think he was singing about his ex-wife, Priscilla. So, he decided against recording it. This isn't true. According to Kathy Westmoreland in her book, "Elvis and Kathy," Elvis considered covering this song. She wrote at page 329: On one session I remember Elvis gave Felton a recording, "We Had It All" by Dobie Gray. We were all practically in tears when we heard Dobie’s rendition. Elvis looked around the room at all of us who were so moved by the song and said to Felton, “Leave it alone; the song can’t be done any better than that.” I really wanted Elvis to record that song and he did try a vocal, but he knew it shouldn’t be touched, that it was really Dobie’s song, so nothing ever came of it. Kathy was in the room, so we'll have to take her word for it.
'You were the best thing in my life I can recall you & me Lord knows we had it all' today marks 7years of his passing 26/05/2017 I sorely miss him & I will always love him. Rest well my love till we meet again in our next life, dance with the stars and fly with the angels you will always have a special place in my heart❤🥰💔💝🧚♂️😭🤞
You and me we had it , then just when I needed you most you turned your back on me and walked away, never thought of living without you, now sleepless nights and endless days are all I have, sure miss the times we had it all 😢💔
Thanks for putting this up. One of the greatest singers since Drift Away filtered out of Quadraphonic Studios in Nashville, now just a few years ago. Could never figure out why he did not have wider success or acceptance, maybe colour was still an issue in America, but he recorded this in Nashville. Follow vinyl LPs just did not have the same quality songs. Didn't his record company, like so many record companies who neglected talented artists, just want to pay for good material. With the success of Drift Away and being in Nashville, you would have thought it would not have been all the difficult to get great material to record. But not so, and Dobie just faded from view. His Wikipedia bio is embarrassingly short of any real information and for some time was even vague as to the date of his death and cause of death. What a singer!! Saw him live, 2 nights in a row and the memory still shines as bright the star he was.
remember jeanie how i used to touch your hair while reaching for the feeling that were always there you were the best thing in my life god how i miss you
Iam so disapointed and sad at the same time to learn that Dobie Gray past on iam crying right now and i juust. Wish someone can tell me how he dies iam from South AFRICA THANKS
Elvis recorded a couple other songs that Dobie had recorded and seriously considered recording this song. But, he told an associate of his that if he recorded "We Had It All", people would think he was singing about his ex-wife. So, he didn't record it. Elvis fans wish he had. That does nothing to take away from the pure genius of Dobie's performance.
Not had the pleasure of listening to Dobie, that was until now. Wow, what a great vocalist, and I am an Elvis nut. Dobies voice is pure, where Elvis's has more accent on interpretation and feeling. I honestly didn't think I would hear another vocalist that would be up there with the King but this guy, in his own inimitable way is knocking on the door!
NeilThompson30 Hi. Just little further context for yourself or anyone else that may come across the thread and just be curious. dhornjr1 was close. Elvis made a statement that "people would think the song was about him Priscilla", but it wasn't this song. Elvis said that about a different song on an album he did the year before, I just can't remember specific song. But this song actually *was* about he and Priscilla. Elvis loved Dobie Gray's Drift Away album and this song had fell on his ears so he expressed interest in wanting to try it. Legendary bass player Norbert Putnam tell the story and details in his Memoir that he and David Briggs had published this song "We Had It All" and they were in a recording session with Elvis when Elvis asked to hear this song right here of Dobies played over the studio monitor speakers. He and the band worked through the arrangement to do their own version and Elvis actually did three or four run-throughs. With each take, everyone in the room could tell Elvis was getting a bit more emotional and by he & the bands last attempt a handful of people witnessed tears in Elvis eyes. He ended up setting the microphone down and just ending the recording session and walking out. Most people in the studio that night said it absolutely was about he & Priscilla. Not even a debate or question. Their divorce had happened not too long before and it just hit very close to home. I like Putnam's & the Producer, Felton Jarvis' account because it reminds us that great artists are extremely sensitive souls. Elvis connect with a lot of songs powerfully & emotionally, but this was one the got a little too personal. Shame EP couldn't finish it, sure would have been quite a serious, emotional version. But Dobie, with that great voice of his, sure did their song justice. Always enjoy listening to this.
I read along time ago that he wanted to record this in 1973 but realized he couldn't top Gray"s version, so he gave up . This is the first time I've ever heard this.
Just found out today. So sad, In a previous life I was a photographer [mainly entertainment industry] Last year I found some photos I took of Dobie and looked him up with a view to sending them to him. It's too late now.
yes! sivle 69 your so right,he could really touch you. there r very few singers in modern times could do this, only singers who have lived & breathed sorrow,& who really feel the song, the kind of thing a talent show wannabe couldn't even begin to understand.
This is an exceptionally beautiful and meaningful song. The father of my child played it for me in 1973 on the telephone after I had left. He didn't say anything. I answered the phone and the music came on.
Wow, that's powerful.
This if my favorite version of this beautiful song! Rest in peace, Dobie. Thank you for blessing us with your great songs!
This is my favorite Dobie Gray song. RIP Dobie. You were the best!
🎉I lost my partner 6years ago, we were planning to get married but God called him back home. One of the great voices has been silenced. We'll miss you, Dobie.
I lost the girl I loved to ALS 8 months ago . This makes me think of her . But I think of her everyday anyway. With tears .
I really miss Dobie. Nobody could sing like him. He had so much soul.
Just learned that he passed away recently. He will be missed. RIP Dobie Gray. You gave us wonderful music.
I miss Dobie Gray so much. Full of soul in his voice.
Possibly my favourite Dobie Gray song, so sweet and wonderfully sung ❤
Donnie Fritts and Troy Seals wrote it.
I bet I played it 25 consecutive times yesterday. Anybody that has ever loved and lost would have to say this song speaks to them.
Easily one of my favourite songs of all time
I totally agree.
What a great song and singer! I had this album back in the day and loved every cut. This song takes me back to an old girlfriend that I would sing this to.
You were the best thing in my life , I can recall

You may be gone in physical presence on earth, but you are still touches our souls with your music.
RIP Gray all your songs touch my heart saddly
Loving this song, reminds me of my old flame!! Always a spot in my ❤
My very favorite version of this song. I've heard it by B.J. Thomas, Willie Nelson, etc. but they couldn't hold a candle to this voice! Wow!
Takes me back to being a little girl and riding in the car with my daddy! He loved Dobie Gray and made me a fan too!
One of the greatest love songs of the past 50 years
KEN MARGO
MY FAVORITE SINGER OF ALL TIMES, WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED IT FOR THE WORLD
Amo questa canzone! Anche la versione di Willie e meravigliosa... 😊😊😍😍🎶🎸🎶💘❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯
I loved Dobie Gray. Miss him a lot.
What an amazing talent.
I cry everytime I hear this song. He is singing about his woman at the time but I relate it to when I had custody of my only son and lost custody. I have never been the same since that happened. Best years of my life were spent with my son when he was young. We had it all…
I heard a beautiful version of this from a dear friend of mine and it meant so much to me. Brought back many memories and touched the soul.
The delivery of this song byTom Jones takes me back to an early love as a teenager. Also so moving the Dolly Parton's delivery.
I think this is a beautiful song ,& Dobie's rendition is the best of all.
There were several Elvis songs way too many girls felt far too deeply because they believed he was singing about Priscilla.
All the great singers of the 70's cut a ballad or two, or more. This is a good one .. thanks for the memories.
Total perplexing on why Dobie didn’t have greater success. What a voice.
Wish it could be released...
I really like this song, from Drift Away.
Very pretty song for Dobie Gray!
A Great Artist!
Dobie Had a wonderful inspiring vocal of warmth, emotion and honesty, This song is! as exceptional in the voice and phrasing, as well the beautiful acoustic worked out to go along with it. beautiful rendition. What a lovely beautiful song. Burton Trent

Yes, it was so good when I was your man. This song brings back memories that will never go away.
this was written by an awesome songwriter/singer from my hometown of Muscle shoals AL, named Donnie Fritts!

What's all this 'I wish Elvis recorded this?!!' This is Dobie Gray - why talk about Elvis??
Elvis recorded a couple other songs that Dobie had recorded and seriously considered recording this song. dhornjr1
Fairplay mate - didn't know that
NeilThompson30 No problem. I miss Elvis and Dobie. I hope they're somewhere singing together now.

L Michelle 😂😂ooh it was so good when I was your man u and me we had it all👌👌🔊🔊
Is there any unreleased version on Elvis trying song out in vaults? Even if he's just trying it...
This is an awesome version of this tune. Waylon Jenning recorded a great version as well.

Well I'm just looking at the back of my album cover of Loving Arms. Definitely Troy Seals and Will Jennings
It reminds me my lade father
Indeed.
Good Donnie Fritts song, recorded by Waylon Jennings on Honky Tonk Heroes 1973
elvis would have made a million seller with this, but really I believe he sould sang this for Pris just to make her see he still loves her so much.
The man who wrote this song, Donnie Fritts, died today. 8/28/19
I miss Bresci through this song. She was shot and killed in Goma Congo
the bs and beautiful melody in any other culture never mix
I'm a Dobie fan but like the song as well. If you do to, look up Susan Jacks of the Poppy Family. She does a sweet version of this as well.
