    These days the regular 5.0L Coyote produces 500HP and 418lb-ft, while the naturally-aspirated 5.4L V8 in the Mustang GT3 produces over 600HP and 480lb-ft of torque, and both get better fuel economy than the supercharged 5.4L in this GT500. Anyone who thinks combustion engines have "stagnated" or "can't be improved" hasn't been keeping track of how far things have come since even the 2000s.

      The “regular” 5L Coyote doesn’t make 500. To get that number, one has to track-down and overpay for one of the scarce “Dark Horse” units.
      Even so, the 5.4 blower motor had a LOT more beef under the curve, and average power across its usable rev-range. Peak HP figure doesn’t tell the whole story.

      @ragingbull94mtx 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@theoddfurry141 Not sure what inflation calculator you're using but they all seem to grossly underestimate the actual inflation rate. Here's a better way to calculate it. Average new car price in 2007 = around $24,000. Average new car price today = around $48,000. That's a ratio of 2:1. So all you need to do is double the price of any new car in 2007 to know what it would cost in today's money. So for this Shelby GT500, the coupe would be $84,000 in today's money. A 2022 GT500's original MSRP was $81,000 (excluding markups) - so the math checks out. A 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 cost $38,000 (or $76,000 in today's money). Right in line with what a 2023 Charger SRT Hellcat costs.

    • @ragingbull94mtx
      @ragingbull94mtx 10 месяцев назад

      Car price inflation is pretty consistent (if you exclude dealer markups). Salaries have not kept pace with inflation which is why it "seems" like the auto market is out of control. Think of it this way: even if on paper your current salary is double what it was in 2007, your actual "purchasing power" is no better off than it was back then. I would say the "labor market" is so messed up that pay can't keep up with inflation. Car prices are very much in line with reality.

      Tires, gearing.

    • @ImmortanDan
      @ImmortanDan 10 месяцев назад +7

      Gearing is the big answer: while the bmw has 200tq less, the power difference is much smaller, and as long as you have sufficiently short gearing that's all that matters for acceleration.
      It's also possible that the BMW had more favorable suspension geometry and weight distribution for a hard launch; the review here does say the Mustang is front-heavy (and sure enough, those twin-cam Modulars with tons of stroke were total boat anchors) so it's really no surprise that it can't put enough weight on the rear tires.

    I remember driving one of these when they came out and being so underwhelmed. The gearshift handle was like grabbing a softball it was so big, the car felt numb and heavy, but more importantly it’s wasn’t that quick and very little exhaust growl/engine sound. This was at a time when Ford dealers were asking $75k for them, which was absolutely insane considering the far better driving and much faster C6 Z06 had just come out the year prior for about the same price after you figured the Shelby’s markup. Luckily some of the issues were addressed with later versions
