This is the most 2003 thing I’ve ever seen

This is so much better than other UK entries than managed to get a few points. Wogan even told them beforehand they wouldn’t get a point because of Iraq backlash and there was definitely sabotage on the night when they couldn’t hear the track. Shame these poor kids took the full brunt. Still 15 in the UK charts, again so much better than many other UK entries.

They reached the same UK chart position as their position in ESC running order. Strange coincidence. This performance is good- why couldn't they have done this (and worn those outfits) in ESC? The guy on guitar is really good.

It didn't deserve zero points 😪 .. we all expected it but it was rare at this stage for us to get low points however recently its pathetic we never get points.. last year 3 country's got zero points from the public vote shocking

Don’t know why, but strangely I think this should be used for advertising a cobbler’s shop.

No it's not just you, it does sound completely off key and I can't explain why. It's a terribly written song - absolutely flat with no melody.

You're correct. The melody and chord progression uses way too many notes and harmonies dissonant to the scale/key which the song is in. Even if pitched perfectly, it still sounds out of key (Jump to the end to hear for yourself). This effect can be useful when the aim is to create an ethereal feel, if used sparingly. This can only be effective when it is counterpoint to very strong harmonies and melody throughout the vast majority of the piece. This causes the listen to experience 'tension' during the dissonance, against which they experience 'relaxation' as the melodies and harmonies resolve to that which they can mentally process as a harmony. It's an artefact used fairly extensively in classical music, but the effect is not pleasing and nor is it intended to be Pop music does not lend itself to such complexity and it supposed to be easily digestible by its very nature. When it isn't, it is no longer pop music.
Cry Baby makes pretty much every musical error a songwriter/arranger could make when creating something for live performance. Firstly, the dissonance I've mentioned. Secondly, from what I can hear, the harmonies use power-chords almost exclusively in the verses. This is where the 3rd of a chord is omitted, resulting in the harmony being neither major nor minor. This makes the harmonies sound unstable and a vocalist with very little to pitch around. Thirdly, the melody uses a lot of accidental notes to the scale/key of the song, making the melody itself sound off key. Again it can only be used very sparingly and a sustained note should NEVER be accidental to both the scale and the chord. A good example of using this effect used purposefully incorrectly (and therefore correctly from its intended perspective) is the classic standard Desafinado. Here, the effect is intended and lends itself to the style of the music.

But a for a pop song, it simply does not work. I'm not a songwriter, but I do know that if I wanted to create something that was purposefully to sound awful and be near impossible to perform live well for a singer, then I'd consider Cry Baby to be a work of near perfection. As a final point to tie all this together, a verse and chorus of the song can be listened to in MIDI-file instrumental format, with the melody played electronically and pitch perfect (Click the play button as it's free to listen to the sample). As you can hear, it still sounds "off":

@@frankwilson3265 This is the best reply in RUclips history, with great detail accompanied by a fantastic explanation that makes sense, with examples thrown in.
Like booking a guitar lesson with a local tutor and turning up to find that it's Mark Knopfler.
      Thank you.

Awkward entry even if the UK got nul points because of the Iraqi backlash and the minor technical issue, the Eurovision public wouldn't give tuppence. This song is bad.
