    I worked at a call centre in Croydon from 2003 onwards. Emily Reed was next to me at my induction - we had to say something interesting about ourselves to the person next to us to share with the group - mine was really boring - about running the marathon or something - Emily said she’d come second in the Song for Europe competition. She was really nice and I remember thinking it must have been a real comedown to work in a call centre after that. This is the first time I’ve seen this and I see she was robbed, particularly given the ultimate result in the competition! Thank you for posting and Emily, I hope you are doing well!

    A record entry of over 1000 songs but the public are only allowed to choose from four. How "Cry Baby" got onto this shortlist must be the greatest miracle in the history of popular music. Imagine how angry the writers of the other 900 odd songs must have been feeling. When the UK used to be competitive there used to be anything from 8 to 12 finalists. Having finished third in 2002 maybe the BBC were scared of winning again and wanted to avoid the expense of having to stage it again.

    Emily Reed was clearly the best. A great voice. I am sure the song would have done well in Riga.

    This is what you get for holding your national final at 4:35 on a Sunday afternoon between that week's enthralling installment of _Songs of Praise_ and an especially dull episode of _Last of the Summer Wine._

      The population of the UK in 2003 was 59.5 million. Amount of televotes received? 100,000, according to Wogan. Not exactly representative of the great public, if you ask me. But maybe that's why it took like five seconds to tally up the votes? I mean, didn't Wogan first say that the lines are now closed, and then moved on straight to collecting the votes? 🙄 But, anyway, that was almost twenty years ago ... whatcha gonna do about it now? 😉😎🍺

    Emily Hill should have won. The only one that could actually sing.

    Apparently, Emily Reed won the pre-selection on votes cast by 2,500 televotes. If you look at the voting, her top marks came off two large regions the South and the Midlands. She'd have been a good bet for a Top 15 in Riga easily - beautiful song and with a bit of time and rehearsals she'd have nailed it. We eliminated two decent songs in the radio semi final - "First Night" by SK which was a slag song but an R+B ballad and "Do Anything For Your Love" by Fenix which was a radio tune a la Estonia 2002.

    Everyone, this is a matter of national importance. We must perfect time travel so that we can go back to this final and stop Jemini from ever taking part.

    Absolutely ridiculous Emily Reed (Help Me) didn’t go through that year and it probably would have retained some credibility for us going forward instead of the disappointment we experienced.

  • @tj1483
    @tj1483 7 лет назад +8

    Let's face it, it was the introduction of the regional jury that screwed it all up. Emily Reed got more votes overall, but lost out when votes were divided regionally... wonder where we've seen that before....!!!!!!

    The irony is that Now and Forever probably would have got some points from various countries (perhaps Ireland and Sweden) if it had been entered.

    Never perform a pop song which has a natural sense of dissonance in a live setting. Page 1. Even a highly accomplished singer would have trouble to filter the urge to attempt to correct what registers as discordance to the ear, making the vocal even worse and more off key. Add to this two singers that are noticeably pitchy (and that's being kind) and there was only ever going to be one outcome, which is utter disaster. The mistakes on stage were simply the reflection of the mistakes that had led to Jemini 'performing' this monstrosity at the finals. It's so obvious that what was going to happen happened that I find it inconceivable that there wasn't at least one competent person involved in the process there to step in to not allow this train-wreck to go ahead. How did a corporation which is allowed to fleece the vast majority of UK households who own a TV still manage not to employ a single person with the knowledge which is basic and common to even the average pub singer?

    Oh boy Cry baby is even worse when seeing it beating Emily Reed. Yes how on earth didn't she win. I think because UK does not have any interest in the contest anymore and certainly don't want to win.

      She reminded me a bit of Stacey Solomon. It was the best song. The only use for Song Number 1 as far as I can see is that the dance helped me with a bowel movement.

    Been reading Tim Moore's excellent book "Nul Points" - about all songs which didn't score at Eurovision.
    This was probably the best song and performance out of the 4 on the night, but it feels a bit dated for 2003 - more Kylie era, early 90s. I know they complained about the sound when they performed at the ESC, but neither is a great singer - even on this performance she can't hold a note.
    Poor song number 2 got nothing here!
