Eurovision: Songs the United Kingdom Almost Sent (1957 - 2019) | Second Places in British NFs

- While the United Kingdom is currently relying on internal selections, they also have a remarkable history of televised national finals. Particularly "A Song for Europe" continued over multiple decades, but also other formats were tried here and there with varying success. This video will be a recap of all the songs the British almost sent to Eurovision!
Kerri-Anne (2019) a prime example of how the UK should use international voting too. This banger should have won, instead the British public voted for a guy who had appeared on some reality show. Europe would've chosen Kerri and the UK wouldn't have finished bottom 5.
No that song was boring.
no we would have been bottom 5 it was generic anisa would have been better
at least people would've liked it just like this year, no matter even if it ended up last still@@DavidDamen-ve7br
No chance it was awful
I'm still so gutted that they didn't select Sweet Lies in 2019. That song was an absolute banger
Thank you for this amazing list! So much gold here. What Do You Say To Love? Don’t Bother To Knock. Fantasy. Don’t Panic. Dancing in the Night. This Is the Kiss. One Gift of Love. Help Me. Leading Me On. Freaks.
So wish we'd sent Jordan Clarke in 2019. Still have Freaks on my Eurovision playlist to this day.
Hos Robbie Williams impersonation was terrible tho
Definitely a lot of Pachebel's Cannon in that song.
Imagine how different our history would’ve been if we’d sent “Yodel in the Canyon of Love” in 1997 😂
Yes we would have come last
Exactly. Why the UK public never got Love Shine A Light to No.1 in the UK singles chart, I'll never know.
Freaks was great. The only song from UK (despite not winning the national final) other than "Love shine a light" and "I can" that I still have in my playlist. The live performance wasn't that great but the song had a lot of potential. Loved the irony yet still positive message in the song. Something different.
Wow! Well, that was absolutely fascinating! Thank you very much for putting it together: it must have taken quite a bit of research. Well done, really worth watching. What might have been, in 1995 and 2000, to name but two!
The 1980 and 1995 runner ups are among my favourite ever songs. The 1981, 84, 90 and 99 songs here are also much better than the entry we ended up sending (as much as I love Love Games though).
Really enjoyable watch and over the years I have always been saddened to see that several deserved competitors just did not take the victory. For me, the early 2000s made the most impact with bad decisions from the British public, especially in 2007 with Cyndi, just an amazing voice.

The whole time I was just waiting for the Yodel in a canyon of love, Katie Price and Michelle Gayle. (She should definitely have been sent over Andy Abraham.)
Angel Eyes, Don’t Bother to Knock, Where I Belong, Lover Come In, Sink or Swim and Sweet Lies were lost gems. I wish they released the results of 2016, 2017 and 2018.
John Miles tried to go to Eurovision?!?!?! Oh wow
Oh yes
In 1999, it is said Sister Sway won, but the votes from the Manchester area were discounted, thereby changing the final result and they finished 3rd after that reshuffle.
1995 reminds me of "Love Shine a Light' - would have come top 5.
Lead was runner up in 1985 as well, dancing in the night!
I think that some would have done better for the UK. Especially 1987 Anne Turner, 1995 Dear John, 2000 Six Chix, 2003 Emily Reid and 2007 Cyndi. Maggie Moone was also good in 1980. But would she have bettered 3rd? Maybe. Incidentally with new lyrics that could be a nice Christmassy song. Most that were sent though were probably the best of what was on offer
We need shows like Finland and Sweden, honestly.
We minus me in what concerns the one and a half sounds from Sweden: they either revisit ABBA or send a one member boygroup ... 😵 😫
Remember feeling gutted that Dear Jon weren’t selected to represent the UK in 1995. A much better song than Love City Groove.
1980 was before my time, but have since seen the voting and it was so close to select the UK entrant. Happy Everything could have been a winner I think, although it would have been a tall order to beat Johnny Logan that year. Happy Everything has been covered all over the world most famously by Roger Whittaker.
I don’t think it would have been too tall an order for Happy Everything to win in 1980. Remember the first time round, Johnny only won by a 15 point margin!
Agree regarding One Gift of Love - much better song, probably top 3 in Dublin (behind Norway and Spain). That said, Love City Groove were underrated in trying to modernise the contest’s image. Still, the UK public rectified their mistakes in choosing the thematically similar Love Shine a Light two years later (and we know how that ended).
'Tell The Boys' (1967) by Sandie Shaw became a big hit in Finland.
If you ever remake this video there is available footage of this show from 1967 and 1968.
Could you link them here? Would be really appreciated, thanks!
I have the audio of If You Ever Leave Me if you need it.
The runners-up were better than the winners in 1964, 1974, 1975, 1976 (sorry), 1979, 1980, 1981 (sorry again), 1984, 1985, 1994, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 (rigged), 2008, 2019 (Sweet Lies)
It would be amazing if you could send it to me via e-mail! Thank you so much

No! Not 1976! “Save your Kisses…” is one of my all time favourites 😂
@@mjb22 Just personal preference really. I do think Wake Up would have challenged for the victory too I think.
2004 runner-up had young Ben Barnes as part of that boyband, just btw 😅 (he's the black haired one who had some sorta olive-coloured hoodie?...iirc)
WTF were we doing sending fricking Scooch in 2007? Imagine being the girl who lost to that!! We honestly deserve everything we get and I hope we're never allowed to vote again!
And Jesus! Katie Price almost won.
Lita Roza sang How Much Is That Doggy In The Window, and was the first woman to have a Number 1 single. I guess it would be like Dua Lipa taking part in the national final and losing 😮
And then there was 1995...the year the UK gave up...let's hope Olly will sing such an amasing song we never ever have to listen to these songs ever again...
a small fact but in 2005 whilst performing at the national final Katie price was 7 months pregnant
1980-1984 basically left a massive mark on the contest’s reputation in the U.K. They’re still fighting that reputation today.
I don’t think the reputation would have been nearly as damaging had Bucks Fizz not won in Dublin (by four points). That was the single most detrimental event to the contest’s reputation in the UK.
I think the damage is later. Look at post 2000 entires with a few notable examples.
1973 Cliff Richard would have won with the song Help it along 1974 Olivia Newton John would have come close with Angel Eyes and Meggie Moon in 1980 with Happy Everything
I actually liked the 1969 more than what they sent! But hey.. it won!
Like one version of "That Sounds Good To Me" wasn't enough, knowing there were three makes it even worse
Great video- I would have put the actual UK entry in brackets....who did Jemini beat?
2003
Tell the Boys in 1967 was fantastic. I think Happy Everything could have won in 1980.
Agree regarding Happy Everything. I also think Don’t Panic could have done as well as Making Your Mind Up did in Dublin.
It just sounded so much like their number 1 "Dance Yourself Dizzy" that was the problem
Some of these are poor but there are a number of gorgeous songs too - 73, 74, 80, 87 and 99 are high on my list and 2003 was better than Jemini by an order of magnitude!
omg 2005 so 00s posh and pink love it
The shadows song was later recorded by the dooleys.
there’s footage of the 67 and 68 nf songs!
can you give me the links?

1984 And 1985... Best songs.. should have won
1991 sounds like a 70s song I just cant think of.
My home country!!! 1959 could have given us our first win earlier! 1962 would have won too. 1964 is very Sinatra like. Sandie's selection anything would have won. All songs are great. Ditto with Lulu and Mary Hopkin. Olivia would have given ABBA a run for their money in 1974 with 'Angel Eyes'. Mary Mason would have got the double. 1978 caused controversy in some circles. Due to the many black acts participating, many felt it was unfair none got chosen. 1979 would have been Top 5. Maggie Moone would have won in 1980. I'd say Liquid Gold would have too. Kerri Wells would have won in 1985. Jump would have got Top 5 ditto with Ann Turner. 1990 would have given Toto a run for his money. Possible winner. Sonia did prefer this one, but Niamh was the best that year. Frances would have done the same but we chose the right song that year. 1995 would have done better but I feel again the right choice. 1996 & 1997 thank God we sent Gina and Katrina. The singer Kerry died in 2012. Alberta in 1999 would have been Top 5. Six Chix a safe top 10. I think Tony would have. Emily Reed wouldn't have got 0. At least 11-17 place. She was robbed. Oh and unpopular opinion. I know she's a bit of a tart, but Katie Price would have been Top 20. Someone would have given her 12. Cyndi was robbed in 2007 - at least mid table we would have got. Jade correct in 2009. 2010 I want to forget. If Elton John sang that song it's have been last. Kerri Anne would have been Top 15 in Tel Aviv. That NF was rigged.
First time ever I hear someone calling the UK his home country ... Usually people from the UK insist on being from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales. 😪
@@joshlevicq6823 Although I am a very proud Englishman, we are still the United Kingdom.
God knows what possessed the BBC in thinking Kenneth McKellar was just right for Eurovision in 1966. He would have been dated even in 1956.
The endless parade of unknown no-hopers in the 70s, 80s and 90s was incredibly depressing. Really bad singing.
Cheryl Baker was quite the trier wasn't she!
Wasnt there a uk national final in 2017 and 2018?
There was, but only the winner was revealed
they didn't reveal who came second
@@kjESCil oh ok (unfortunate imo)
8:37 John Miles? :o
if only they would've chosen emily reed in 2003...
Is that Cheryl Baker AGAIN in 1976?
Yes! I didn’t know that, neither.
I guess that's why people used to call her "the inevitable" ...
😊 😄
Cheryl appeared four times in song for Europe & also did backing vocals
For other acts while off camera.
One good song - New Seekers in 1972 but wouldn’t have beaten Vicky Leandros.
Coco looks like they stole a Bjorn lookalike. I fancy the bassist and acoustic guitar girls in Tony Moore's band.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
look as a brit we can say from 1967 to 1977 we were the best country when it comes to results
What an absolutely depressing thought - considering the fact it's 2023 already ...
🙀😞😔😥😭😩😖😢😿
@@joshlevicq6823 not depressing but its a fact but the reason we did so well was all of those songs sounded british
1997 would have been a win for the UK regardless
Aw that Freaks song is actually good. How did Bigger Than Us beat that?
Michael Rice had competed in 'the 100' hence had a fan base already built in.
Freaks and Jordan had the last laugh though - has over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, generating over £300k in revenue
@@andyrosiak7775 True but the fast majority of the money would have gone to the writers so Jordan would have seen very little of it.
Sweet Lies in 2019 would've been a massive ESC party hit. Sent the usual trash instead.
Katie Price was an icon, legend and the moment
Didn't they had a NF in 2017?
So many horrendous songs placed at 2!!!
Alberta band were the only ones repeating.....in the late 90's early '00s so many girl/boy bands.
UK almost sent a song in italian in 1960 🤯
And the UK almost sent a partly French-language entry in 1999 (the best song in that otherwise poor NF).
you forgot 2018...
several of these are replaced entries
2016 and 2017?
Oh is it because runner-ups were never revealed? Okay
exactly, same for 2018 unfortunately @@lonelysland
Cilla Black was also due to do Eurovision back in the 1960s but the dates clashed with tours she was on and so it never happened.
We could have won the whole thing in 2007. Instead we sent Scooch.
Well Terry Wogan tried by announcing Cyndi had won 'by mistake'. If only his co-presenter hadn't corrected him
Good grief - Jemini vibes all over the place ...
😨 😱
Well, to be fair - I usually dislike the UK entries anyway, though some exceptions exist: 😍😻
Blue's "I can", Frances Ruffelle's "Lonely symphony", Prima Donna's "Love enough for two" and first of all Imaani's "Where are you", as well as "Sink or swim" and "Yodel in the canyon of love" among the runners-up.
Gotta go now - time to yodel ... 😁😸
'A Yodel in The Canyon of Love'? 1997.
Okay.........
The lyricist is a cunning linguist.
1995 was best 2nd followed by 2004
DJ romeo 😂😂😂
Also Katie Price the icon!!!
